Everybody's arguing over who did it best, can't we appreciate them all? Elaine, Judy, Jodi, Emma (from the 2001 Denmark recording), etc., all brought their own qualities to this great song.

Of course we can, however Elaine was and still is in a league of her own as far as this song is concerned . . . . . . . the ORIGINAL . . . . . . and BEST.

I love Judy Kuhn. I remember when the Disney Pocahontas came out and I flipped because she was doing the voice. I said, finally a princess with some pipes!
Love all of the ladies who have done this song, wish I was one of them... auditioning soon!

If the very beginning intro thing of this song isn't the most ABBA thing I've ever heard then I don't know what is. XD

Well considering the fact that the music (not the lyrics) were written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus that is not exactly surprising :D
Edit: I have heard though that this is one of two songs in chess that Björn Ulvaeus wrote the lyrics for so I'm not sure about the lyrics thing for this particular song

I LOVE THIS SONG!!! I fell in LOVE with Elaine Page's rendition, the first one I heard, BUT, other versions are just as BEAUTIFUL in their own way. It's the SONG that STRIKES, irrespective of the singer!!!

Judy Kuhn's version is one of the best! Such a strong, beautiful voice!
I also loved Roberta Valentini's "Nobody's Side" in Bielefeld, Germany. She's amazing! ♥

    What's going on around me
    Is barely making sense
    I need some explanations fast
    I see my present partner
    In the imperfect tense
And I don't see how we can last
I feel I need a change of cast
    Maybe I'm on nobody's side.
And when he gives me reasons
    To justify each move
    They're getting harder to believe
    I know this can't continue
I've still a lot to prove
There must be more I could achieve
But I don't have the nerve to leave.
    Everybody's playing the game
But nobody's rules are the same
    Nobody's on nobody's side
Better learn to go it alone
Recognize you're out on your own
    Nobody's on nobody's side.
The one I should not think of
    Keeps rolling through my mind
And I don't want to let that go
    No lovers ever faithful
    No contract truly signed
There's nothing certain left to know
And how the cracks begin to show!
Never make a promise or plan
Take a little love where you can
    Nobody's on nobody's side
Never stay too long in your bed
Never lose your heart, use your head
    Nobody's on nobody's side.
    Never take a stranger's advice
Never let a friend fool you twice
    Nobody's on nobody's side
Never be the first to believe
Never be the last to deceive
    Nobody's on nobody's side
And never leave a moment too soon
    Never waste a hot afternoon
    Nobody's on nobody's side
Never stay a minute too long
Don't forget the best will go wrong
    Nobody's on nobody's side.
Better learn to go it alone
Recognize you're out on your own
    Nobody's on nobody's side.

I've been going down an ABBA rabbit hole since they released their two new singles. The OBC of Chess has my favorite vocals and the concept album my favorite orchestrations, but I would love to hear ABBA's interpretation of this show. I bet it would be amazing! Please, Benny and Bjorn - make it happen! Can you imagine hearing Agnetha and Frida sing I know Him So Well, Someone Else's Story, and Nobody's Side, and Benny and Bjorn sing One Night in Bangkok?!

Honestly, Elaine is my favorite. It's also the one I "grew up" with, so I'm very attacked to her voice as Florence. I compare all others to her, even though I know Judy came first. But still, I love hearing what the others bring to such a beautiful character.

Wow...I'm not too keen on this recording overall, but Judy Kuhn sure hits it out of the park every time she comes up. I'm hard-pressed to say whether she or Elaine Paige is a better Florence - both of them absolutely NAIL the part.

for some odd reason Judy Kuhn kinda reminds me of Nicola Bryant from Doctor Who, she played Peri Brown opposite Peter Davison and Colin Baker during the 80's. Hell, some of the songs from Chess could easily be interpreted as talking about The Doctor.

Judy Kuhn was so much better then Elaine page, sorry to disappoint anyone with that statement-but it's true!
Someone else's story was one of the greatest Broadway tunes from the 80's, and continues to be a favourite of mine today! I wouldn't want to hear anyone else do someone else's story!

There is a certain inevitability about the truth of this song. What I mean is that everyone eventually comes to a point where the lyrics make sense --- never be the first to believe, never be the last to deceive.

yea, it seems to always be between elaine paige and judy kuhn for the best. i think the americans side with judy, mostly because they arent nearly as familiar with elaine. honestly, the thing that makes this version my favorite is the arrangement. i love elaine, but i think the orchestrations in her version are too slow and un-dynamic next to this version.

Ah, this old debate. The issue with this song is that listening to it in 2012, it is very much a "retro" song, with a very early 1980s rock sound. It's not as timeless as, say, Anthem or even I Know Him So Well. Consequently, someone who can bring a more raspy rock edge to this song really helps, as it cements the time and place. Elaine Paige has that, Idina has that, Shona White has that. Judy's voice is more like classical Broadway, which is great but makes the song sound anachronistic.

I don't get the orchestration on this one. Mix is also way off. But, it does feel more like a stage version than the London. I guess I prefer a world where this is just a great pop song by Elaine Paige and we never had to put it in a story.
