Thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 I witnessed this song performed live four times with this MV quality in Japan and dropped my jaw four times 😲. I believe so did many of American audience in their recent three US tours. This song has been normally played in the middle of the setlist to give Saiki, lead vocalist, some break. They played this song, however, as opening at festivals and in Guns N' Roses concert in Japan as support to the legendary band. Yeah! they showed off their skills and talents to the audience who knew nothing about the girls in maid outfit on the stage. I felt as if I heard them screaming "Hey guys! Listen to us and open your eyes wide! We are not the persons that you think ! Salute us!" 😄
You could also try some of their acoustic songs from the acoustic Christmas online concert from a few years ago. But my favourite would be Puzzle from Zepp Toyko features Saiki sand Kanami.
My 1st concert was 1985 seen a huge number of shows since. I have my top tier of shows I have seen, each are there for different reasons. Band Maid makes that cut because of the insane positive energy from the crowd and the band. Have never seen a happier crowd or positive flow from stage to crowd.
After my first of 6 concerts I was hooked . The connection you talk of for me was each of their individual personalities. Each concert is a little different with the interactions during their break Or Imaginary Time with Miku !
This one is a roller-coaster ride! I like to think Kanami lost at least one bonnet coming up with it. I just hope it wasn't me! Thanks for featuring our Maids!
Perhaps their most emotional piece is the live acoustic version of "Puzzle." Words can't describe that performance. They also have great audience interaction during their shows. You can't rally pick up on it from watching an "official live" video clip. You have to see a DVD or live stream of all they do between songs.
Daydreaming might be a good one for you next. I feel the emotion even though I don't know the lyrics. There's a slower one called About Us as well. It was a song to fans directly during covid.
For audience participation, as others have suggested, Domination and Freedom live. Those two songs along with Thrill are the usual starting points for Maidiacs in the making. For an emotional song try Sayonakidori acoustic. Song by our lovely pigeon Miku and is about Romeo and Juliet.
Epic with a capital "E"! 🔥 OK - so you say you are not connecting on an emotional level - what do you think is missing? (For me, they connect more emotionally than any other band has). I also would not classify this as metal (at all). But everyone defines rock/metal differently.
Band-Maid definitely has a prog streak, but they usually don't sacrifice accessibility or songwriting for technicality, so you're not going to get any flute solos or 13/8 beats or weird experimental stuff or 15-minute epics. The prog is all hidden in the technical playing and the dense layering. That said, some songs are more overtly prog - try Black Hole for high-speed genre-bending madness, Giovanni for some weird song structure and some really interesting parts, Why Why Why for a song that runs through several different feels/styles, Wonderland for more of a midtempo jazzy song with some surprises, or Balance for some weird swingy beats. As others have said, Band-Maid does lots of audience connection - talky breaks, singalong parts in most of their songs, and when you see them live you can see how they feed off (and return) the crowd's energy. You guys might enjoy Freedom live. If you're looking for more emotional songs, try About Us (a letter to the fans about missing them during COVID) or Memorable (kind of a sequel to About Us, about their feelings from the first post-COVID US tour, where they received a much warmer reception from US audiences than they expected). Daydreaming has a lot of emotion, and so does the acoustic Puzzle performance from Zepp Tokyo if you track that down.
6:16 - You want connection? Oh boy buckle up because you're in for one wild ride: Domination (2020 live) Freedom (2020 live) Hate? (Official Live) Onset Shambles
I would start with Daydreaming for "connection", but then again, that's so personal it's hard to recommend something. I might as well be the mood you are in at the time.
"From Now On" very much connects emotionally with me, but if you need emotional lyrics to get that connection, then Puzzle, or About Us (a pandemic song written in response to fans who were struggling - the "Us" is Band-Maid and their fans), or Sayonakidori are good places to start. There are plenty of others, but I've picked ones that provide English subtitles in the official version. Honestly, on musicianship they are fantastic but there are other bands (e.g. Asterism or Sokoninaru among Japanese bands) I'd rate even higher, but on the emotional connection aspect, I would put Band-Maid right at the top.
"Hate?" , the official live video from their 10th Anniversary Tour finale at the Yokohama Arena in November. Hate is an emotion. Pay attention to the accompanying lyrics written and sung by Saiki, their lead vocalist. Somebody really pissed her off. SAIKI, TELL US WHAT YOU REALLY THINK!!!!!
I saw Focus play Hocus Pocus live twice during the early 70s. For audience connection try- Don't You Tell Me, the latest Official Live Video from Yokohama Arena 2023.
There's a two-fer video on the Band-Maid channel of a covid-era livestream *"Manners"* and *"Black Hole"* for J-LOD (a government assistance program to help the entertainment industry). It's a little sterile compared to actual concerts with actual audience interaction, but they did what they had to do to stay a viable band. They are two different types of songs. It'll be interesting to hear what you have to say about it.
Hokus Pokus had a similar overpowering technical approach mixed with blinding speed, at one point Kanami’s tremelo was reminiscent of Jan Hammer’s hundred notes a second style. Band Maid can be very emotional, they are technical at times, but instrumentally and lyrically touching.
Nice reaction, and if you want a "connecton" example, there are many: About Us, Memorable, Daydreaming, Wonderland, Smile, Page (acoustic). Puzzle (acoustic) Anenome (acoustic)
Not sure what your criteria is for emotional connection. If it is ballads then Daydreaming, About Us, Memorable and Endless Story are great choices. If it is crowd interaction then Plat Liva and Domination Live have plenty of that.
Wow, I feel this piece of music has a lot of emotion in it. That said, I do remember that it took me some time to adjust my ears, so to speak, to Band-Maid's music. I'm not sure if it's different sorts of chord progressions (I'm not a musician) or something, but their songs have really grown on me over the 3 years since I found them. I do think it's a big step away from the blues rock and folk rock that I was raised on. For me, Puzzle is the song of theirs that hits me hardest in the "feels", and not just the acoustic version. So I would recommend trying the live version of this song that's on their channel.
Honestly I've heard this song a few times since and it is starting to grow on me, so it might be the same situation. That happened to me with Zeppelin, I remember. Could be we need to hear their songs a few times.
Uh, you watched 'Don't You Tell Me' LIVE. You didn't feel connected? That's strange. Anyway, try 'About Us' or 'Memorable'. Those are specifically written and sung with the fans in mind.
Yeah, it's very impressive but I get left feeling a little cold on these. It could be I just need more time with the songs. I remember Zeppelin took me a little longer before it finally clicked.
Thank you for your honest reaction. I'm not familiar with either Darwin or The Warning so could you enlighten me on names of the instrumental songs played by those bands that you felt an emotional connection with? Thanks and looking forward to learning about these bands I haven't listened to yet.
We did DarWin today - "Inside This Zoo" - and thought that was great. For The Warning I would suggest "Dust To Dust". We do like Band-Maid, but I think we're on a slower track to fully appreciating them.
@@glennandadriansrocktalk I just listened to these two suggestions but was surprised that these have vocals. I was asking for their instrumental songs that moved you. Do these bands even do instrumentals?
Emotional connection???? Hmmmm, lets see...... .... "The Smile trilogy" - Smile, About Us, Memorable These 3 song were written for us, the fans. Anemone, Awkward, .. Daydreaming, ......
They also have a very early LIVE instrumental called 'Onset' and another one around this time called 'Without Holding Back', as well as instrumental version of their other songs.
Hocus Pocus - Focus!!! LOL ...I knew if we dug deep enough, we'd discover 'yodeling' in your background!!! ;-) But you're not wrong! Anyway, for the kids ( under 45 or 50) who may not remember Hocus Pocus - Focus playing on your mom's kitchen radio ... here are the lyrics, which should give it away immediately!! ;-) Joladadijoladadijoladadijoladadi Joladadijoladadi-jo-o-ooh! Joladadijoladadijoladadijoladadi Joladadijoladadi-jo-o-ooh! Oooooh-oooooh-oooooh-oooooh
I think some are misinterpreting your request for emotional connections. If you’re after the soft side of Band Maid with lyrical content towards emotional topics, then “About Us,” “Daydreaming” are what you’re after. However, if it’s fan passion and being engaged with the Maids during a performance? There are few better than “Domination” official live. Where Saiki, lead vocalist, can command thousands with a soft hand gesture.
It was actually neither :) so yeah I guess I'll give it another shot next time. Thank you though for your comment. I was talking about the musicians with each other more than anything, and then how that translated to messaging the audience - in all songs, not ballads - on the gut level. That's what I haven't been able to get to yet.
@@glennandadriansrocktalk Well, then “Domination” serves that up too. Lots of smiles and interactions between players, inside jokes played on the drummer, etc. The Maids are warrior friends, for sure. Not many bands stay together for over a decade and still celebrate each other’s birthdays together
Lol. "Hocus Pocus" is a pretty far reach although it certainly is a very high energy song and the yodeling is a nice touch, but pretty un-Band-Maid in that aspect. Band-Maid is a very versatile, dynamic band that incorporates many different genres into their over 120 original songs. You have heard only three, so there are many songs left to go. Band-Maid refers to their live concerts as "servings" as in the Maid Cafe concept as entertaining their customers by direct involvement at their "serving table". Their cute maid uniforms are more than just a gimmick but represent a segment of Japanese culture that is focused on providing for the individual's personal enjoyment and entertainment. Their goal is to always connect with their audience, and this is accomplished by their electrifying stage presence and by encouraging direct audience involvement. Try their official live concert song "Puzzle" and then watch their emotionally heart-breaking acoustic version of the same song played live. Perhaps a ballad would be worth seeing like "Daydreaming" "About Us", "Endless Story", "Wonderland" to name a few. Remember, Band-Maid is primarily a hard rock band although they do have a deep connection with songs have a deeper impact as in their remarkable ballads. They do not write and record fluff or filler songs. They are very serious artists and elite musicians who take their craft seriously but want to have fun on stage when they let loose and rock. Try their official live song "Domination" or "Freedom" as examples. You have barely scratched the surface of this incredible band and if they are not your cup of tea, then that's fine. Millions of fans will continue to marvel at their great music anyway and enjoy being thoroughly entertained by them. Cheers.
You're welcome! Not instrumental, but we just reacted to DarWin "Inside This Zoo" today as well, and for the Warning check out "Dust To Dust" - we've done that one twice. Those are both great songs. I'm realizing I didn't get across my point, I wasn't really talking about ballads. We're going to keep listening because we do like the band, but it feels like we might be missing something. Just trying to find that piece.
@@glennandadriansrocktalk Understood. Any of Band-Maid's concerts before a live audience will show why fans love this band for its engaging performances and crowd interactions.
You're right, Hocus Pocus is a bit of a reach. But, I was thinking high-energy instrumental, with the occasional quiet or solo part, coming back to the same theme. But no yodeling. Just the level of energy, it was reminiscent of a performance I once saw of Hocus Pocus. They were really getting into it, too. But Focus is nothing like Band-Maid - very different worlds. I'm a prog fan, and definitely becoming a Band-Maid fan as well.
@@AdrianFink Nothing at all wrong with comparing Band-Maid with a high energy song that you enjoyed in the past. That Band-Maid can effortlessly pour out that high intensity energy in song after song is truly incredible. They can incorporate prog as well as many other genres into a particular song, as needed, to produce a delicious mix of tantalizing music. Enjoy your journey of discovery into one of the world's best bands. Cheers.
"...bone crunching metal and not prog-rock." Prog doesn't really have a universally agreed upon definition. They use progressive elements within most of their music. Listen to "Why Why Why," "Giovanni," and "Honkai" from their album Unseen World (unfortunately none of them have official music videos) and tell us that's not prog.
There are plenty of elements of progressive rock in this song (and not the typical odd time signatures, 15-minute epic songs and flute solos that Chris mentioned). But the comment of "bone-crunching metal and not prog-rock" was actually in reference to the comparison of Band-Maid vs. Hocus Pocus. Band-Maid definitely has prog elements but I was talking about the Hocus-Pocus 70's style 'prog' - which isn't Band-Maid. I should say there are _both_ bone-crunching metal and prog elements in the music of Band-Maid. And like Glenn, I'm also getting to really like this band.
@@throwaway9389 Maybe. I think I've given them a fair chance. On the other hand, if you only stick to things you know you'll like, you'll never discover anything new, and I don't think it's unfair to be critical of things if you find you don't like them.
@delorangeade Obviously it is a matter of taste. To your ears it screams at you. To my ears Kanami's guitar takes me on a melodic soaring journey that would work well in an action movie soundtrack. I'm glad you feel like you gave them a fair shot. Obviously their sound isn't appealing to you. I'm sure there are other bands out there that suit your ears better.

This one is a roller-coaster ride! I like to think Kanami lost at least one bonnet coming up with it. I just hope it wasn't me! Thanks for featuring our Maids!
For emotional connection I would start with "Daydreaming", "about Us", or the acoustic version of "Puzzle".
Perhaps their most emotional piece is the live acoustic version of "Puzzle." Words can't describe that performance. They also have great audience interaction during their shows. You can't rally pick up on it from watching an "official live" video clip. You have to see a DVD or live stream of all they do between songs.
If you want emotion try Daydreaming, Endless Story, or About us which is a love letter to fans during the pandemic.
Like everybody else says......Daydreaming
Daydreaming might be a good one for you next. I feel the emotion even though I don't know the lyrics. There's a slower one called About Us as well. It was a song to fans directly during covid.
For audience participation, as others have suggested, Domination and Freedom live. Those two songs along with Thrill are the usual starting points for Maidiacs in the making. For an emotional song try Sayonakidori acoustic. Song by our lovely pigeon Miku and is about Romeo and Juliet.
Epic with a capital "E"! 🔥
OK - so you say you are not connecting on an emotional level - what do you think is missing?
(For me, they connect more emotionally than any other band has). I also would not classify this as metal (at all). But everyone defines rock/metal differently.
Emotional connection is Daydreaming
For a more emotional connection try the live acoustic version of Puzzle.
Every single time I listen to the acoustic "Puzzle" my eyes tear up for some reason and there is never an onion in sight.
Thank you for your reaction. A little bit unclear what you mean by connection. Anyway, Freedom official live would be my suggestion. Have fun!
Watch HATE? live from Yokahama Arena and be prepared to see something wild. You won't regret it.
6:16 - You want connection? Oh boy buckle up because you're in for one wild ride:
Domination (2020 live)
Freedom (2020 live)

I ❤ 🕊️❄️🍌🥷🎸!
Here's how it is with the public: BAND-MAID - Dice & Hate? at Lollapalooza 2023, with optimized audio
Awesome that you saw Focus! Glad to say we've done Don't You Tell Me already, think that was the show too
There's a two-fer video on the Band-Maid channel of a covid-era livestream *"Manners"* and *"Black Hole"* for J-LOD (a government assistance program to help the entertainment industry).
I suppose you mean Jan Akkerman
Nice reaction, and if you want a "connecton" example, there are many: About Us, Memorable, Daydreaming, Wonderland, Smile, Page (acoustic). Puzzle (acoustic) Anenome (acoustic)
Endless Story, Domination Live, Puzzle,
Not sure what your criteria is for emotional connection.
MISA MISA MISA!!!!!

🥰🤗😁
By the way, all 100 songs of this group were written by them themselves, both music and lyrics and arrangement
Kanami could do a solo show like Bonamasa, Steve Vai, Van Halen or SRV.
LOVE Van Halen and SRV. Steve Vai too. Bonamassa was never for me though.
They have proggy elements but they keep it accessible.
LOL ...I knew if we dug deep enough, we'd discover 'yodeling' in your background!!! ;-)
But you're not wrong!
Anyway, for the kids ( under 45 or 50) who may not remember Hocus Pocus - Focus playing on your mom's kitchen radio ... here are the lyrics, which should give it away immediately!! ;-)

Yep!! :) Well-transcribed!
The interlude is cool, but I hate everything else about it. It's like having someone screaming in your face for five minutes, except without vocals.
You might want to skip Band Maid.
@@throwaway9389 Now watch...the new album will be all "chill lo-fi beats for a rainy afternoon" lol
