Word has it the scene where the Mustang crashed into the ditch in Brisbane was unplanned. Peter Yates was in the backseat operating a camera and told McQueen "you can stop driving, we're out of film". McQueen responded, "that's OK, we're also out of brakes". He halted the Mustang by sliding it into the ditch, breaking the upper ball joint and disabling the car.He just missed hitting the camera men stationed there.
The reason for the initial success of "Bullitt"- and its continuing popularity - is the abundance of location filming, as opposed to the usual Hollywood fake sets that were still prevalent in movies then. A high-speed car chase on REAL streets, not to mention the thrilling shoot-out finale at the United Airlines baggage claim at SFO, made a huge impression on audiences when this movie was new. All this excitement makes you ignore the strange plot that you never really can figure out, or the inconsistencies and continuity glitches in the automobile chase.
Brings back memories. I was 12 years old when this movie came out. The theater that I saw it in was torn down 40 years ago. But I can still remember it like it was yesterday.
Dude: The last scene at the end where you're snoring in bed with Jacqueline Bisset was so funny, I was crying and almost peed my pants. It puts a whole different spin on the final few frames, where McQueen goes into the bathroom to wash his hands and looks into the mirror. A great ending to a terrific piece of artwork. THANK YOU!!
I am from San Jose, CA (55 miles south of San Francisco). I remember hearing they were shooting this film. It came out while I was in the USAF at Vandenberg AFB, CA. It came to the base theater - I sat thru it 3X the first night it was shown. It was one of the most popular movies of that time period. I only got to meet Steve McQueen one time - but got 3 in-person autographs from him. Prior to meeting him I asking the lady working in the wardrobe department what kind of cigarettes he smoked. So when approaching him I pulled out a cartoon of cigs for him - he thought that was nice - and gladly signed. Steve McQueen was truly in a class by himself and was saddened to hear when he died at the age of only 50. The terms icon and superstar at thrown around too easily - but Steve was truly in a class all his own and was and still is an icon. RIP. Roger C.
It is so great that you met him. He is renowned world wide as the coolest man on the planet. The only deaths that stick with me are McQueen and Lennon. Kennedy comes third sorry.
I was 8yrs old when this movie was made. i was 17 the first time I ever saw it! My dad still thinks that this is the greatest car chase seen in movie history! No one had ever seen anything like this in 68'...great movie!
Kudos to Mr. Attia. He has done a phenomenal job of tracking down most all the camera locations & shots for this famous car chase scene. Continuity wise, Bullitt was always severely flawed. The same green VW Beetle gets passed multiple times, not just from different camera angles, but timeline continuity looping due to the chase editing. But, the pacing, music, editing & flow still puts Bullitt in the top of anyone's short list all-time best car chase scenes.
For all of us BULLITT aficionados......THANK YOU......this movie has been in our minds for over 40 years......I would have loaned you my 2008 Bullitt Mustang if you would have asked!!! Thanks again....great job!!!
I’m 62. Bullitt has and always will be my favorite all time movie. The chase scene was by far the best ever done. Then and know as far as I’m concern. Steve McQueen is BOSS. Always will be in my book. To this day I tell the younger generation about this movie and the car chase scene. I have a movie poster that was used to promote the movie in my room. I often wondered how much of the Scenery in the movie changed over the years during the car chase scene. Thank you for recreating the background chase scene. And he end scene with you in bed was totally hilarious. Kudos to you my brother.
That was an amazing frame by frame recreation of the original. From the looks of it, a lot has changed since 1968 and a lot hasn't. Noticed more stoplights and a bit more development, but it isn't like the rest of the country. This remake makes the locations today recognizable. Again, great job.
Totally BRILLIANT !!!! , you are a superb filmographer. It is so interesting to compare old film locations to what they look like now.You must have a lot of patience because this is so difficult to do and your results are PERFECT. Well Done.
This is not only great work, but shows what a classic American city San Francisco is. It looks almost exactly the same 50 years after the film was made. You can't do that in New York. With its hi-rises and theme park look, trying to match scenes from THE FRENCH CONNECTION or THE GODFATHER would be nearly impossible.
Herve, you are a genius! Absolutely brilliant editing! The best shot-for-shot comparison video I've ever seen and the modern day inserts into old footage are amazing! I don't know how you did the sleeping in bed shot but I'd love to find out how! You devil! :)
This is outstanding!! I had read that the apartment building he was shown living in was destroyed in one of the earthquakes since. But looks like that wasn't the case. Thanks for all the effort that went into this!
Outstanding.. I like the overlay of music into the chase actually.. I built a Bullitt replica after years of research and discussions with one of the actual stunt drivers. It was a cosmetic total rebuild/clone externally but had a tremec 5 speed, 392 Ford Motorsports crate engine and subframe build, 3:50 Currie industries posi diff and Maier Racing custom internal roll bar that you had to look twice to see. I lived in SF and drove this route many times. Special movie and SF used to be a special place to live.. no more.. Bullitt stands as the coolest movie ever between the chase, the soundtrack which doesn't have a single bad song, all excellent, locations, scenery and McQueen, Bissett, Vaughn, Duvall, etc etc.. I also built a exact Charger duplicate which now resides in the Midwest. The Bullitt car still resides in SF Bay Area. Thanks for the work that went into this post!
Excellent. Stayed in the Amsterdam Hostel on Taylor Street back in April this year and quickly realised where we were. My surname is Mason, we were just round the corner from Mason Street and then went to pick up a cheap Toyota Yaris to drive across USA to Boston in. When we got to the rental place on Bush Street the guy upsold us to a bright red 2013 Mustang and then dropped the one way fee!!. We ended up in the Mustang for $6.00 less than the Yaris would have been with the one way fee. What a way to travel across America. We were skint and camped all the way across America. It was early in the season and many of the state and national parks were not yet open for the season. All the same we camped in many of them and cleared off early in the morning. It all felt a bit like another of my fave' American films - Bonnie and Clyde. It all seemed destined to happen. A great way to finish our round the world trip. Well done Herve, excellent to see your Bullitt locations film and the one on Planet of the Apes, we toured through much of that area in the car. greetings from the UK
Well done. If anyone who loves this movie also likes Eastwood, check out the scene late in Bullitt where he’s at the SFO airport waiting for the Pan Am 707 to return to the gate when you hear a flight announcement in a woman’s voice: “flight 577, Electra II flagship service for Washington may now be boarded through gate 5 ……… .” 5 years later in Magnum Force, Eastwood plays Dirty Harry, another SF homicide cop based on the same true life character as Bullitt. Early in that film Harry is also at the SFO airport walking through the terminal when you hear: “American Airlines flight 577, Electra II flagship service for Washington may now be boarded through gate 5 ……. .” Yes - both movies used the same archive recorded announcement. Small world.
LOVE this! The house in the beginning was built by our family in 1915 and designed by architect Henry C. Smith. It is now the Japanese Consulate. Thanks for making this great clip!
This movie warped me at a young age. Been in love with Mopars since...Now I am 50 and still have one. A Plum Crazy Super Bee this time. But that black Charger...wow. Great video! Thanks!
Thanks, you did a great job and in my opinion, that is the right appreciation to Steve. He would like your split screen, as we can see it in Thomas Crown. So many years that he passed away by double heart attack, after his cancer surgery. But Steve fascinates so much people. We had his movies and pictures and so the legend never die. A lonely wolf, smart, clever, integrity and fighting for what he does. It is a role model, a blueprint for every man. Thanks
The best car chase till now, unreachable. Steve, Bud Ekins and Bill Hickman did a great work. There is so much energy in it. RIP Guys. Greetings from Germany.
That is absolutely superb. Great job, I visited San Fran 18 months ago just to see the sites where Bullit was filmed. Steve McQueen is my favourite actor and Bullit is my favourite film. Went to Taylor and Clay - my highlight. And I just loved San Fran. One day I will live there.
Herve your a genius! Really, I can't say enough about your work! This was really amazing. I loved this so much, It was so weird seeing how much is still the same. The country side was wild the bare dirt in the hill side was exactly the same. Fantastic job Herve! Thank you for all your hard work.
Growing up in the 60's in Calif and having a my cousins husband restoring bikes for Steve, really brings it all home, great job.At one point ,he lost his brakes ,on a down hill run at about 100 mph, some how he kept it all under control.
I watched this years ago when you first posted, and just re-visited it. I can appreciate the work involved in doing this. Turned out great and thanks for posting.
The reason you see the same dark green VW Beetle four times in the chase scene is because this particular segment, on this hill, was shot with four different cameras in four locations. The footage was then edited into different places in the chase to make it look like more than one place. Unfortunately, the Beetle is so distinctive that you notice it each time. When "Bullitt" was new, I really liked the appearance of this (new) Volkswagen color, and was very pleased to get a new Beetle in 1971 that was the same color. Unfortunately my Beetle came to its end upside-down on a freeway embankment in 1978 - not due to a car chase.
Actually the White Firebird and the green Beetle were traffic control cars for the shoot, they were both being driven by people connected to the film. It's another reason why they show up so many times. Yellow taxi cab was another...
I saw this movie with my pa...i was a child but this movie and chase are the best memories of my childhood...this is the best video I ever have seen..!! thanks a lot..!!! ( San Jose Cal.)
I watched the movie "Bullitt" for the first time last night from start to finish. I grew up in San Francisco and I was able to identify a number of the filming locations. This morning I thought I'd check on youtube for filming locations. And this is when I found your video. Totally awesome job, plus your very clever ending. Love it. I should have known you'd do a great filing location video, since I had found and thoroughly enjoyed previous work of your's I found on youtube in regards to such great films as "For A Few Dollars More" and "Dirty Harry". Your vids are awesome! Thank you for the time, effort and expenses that you put into your vids.
Absolutely superb; one of my all time favourite films; so nice to see ‘then and now’ I hope to visit San Francisco one day and retrace this unique car chase. Fantastic work!
Incredible Herve! As a fan of Bullitt I have to say that was outstanding, the way you found and filmed the locations and a very impressive editing job too!. I could tell you were tempted to blow through some of those stop signs but you kept you wits! Once again way to go and keep up the good work!
What a GREAT Job! This must have taken many painstaking hours to put together. I remember seeing "Bullitt" with my mom when I was about 12 years old and it is still one of my favorite movies. Steve McQueen was one of my all-time favorite actors and he died on the day my first born son was born (7 Nov 1980). Also, thanks for pointing out that NO Mustang could keep up with a '70 Charger 440. I have personally rebuilt both the 440 and Ford small block 289 and the Ford 428. MOPAR came standard with what would cost Thousands of Dollars to make a Ford somewhat equal to. I bet McQueen went through a half dozen U-Joints on the day(s) they shot "the chase". Thanks again for all your hard work and for sharing with us Bullitt fans!
I've read that the Mustang he was driving had a 390 and the Charger had a 426. That being said, I think they were both pretty evenly matched with hp and torque, but as for suspension, you've gotta give it to the Mustang. That Charger had as much body roll as a stagecoach. If you want to read more about the original Mustangs they used, here's a link: www.mustangspecs.com/bullitt.shtml Cheers! :)
hahaha Nice ending. I wish I could give this a thousand likes!! I also wish that my Dad could've seen this. He would have been blown away. Well done indeed Sir.. Well done.
So awesome. I own a mustang because of this movie. Love my 07'. Trying to mix retro and modern into my Mustang. Got the sequential tail lights and an exhaust that sounds like the movie. Need some louvers and a billet grill next.
With the new growth or planting of trees around town, Yates may have chosen a different location for some scenes. The brush obstructs the starkness/clarity of the original. Nicely done. Clever ending.
Herve, every time I think you've done your best work you end up doing one even better. This movie had it all. Fast cars, one of the best car chase sequences in movie history, and fast cars. Did I mention fast cars? Well done sir. Bravo.
Even 50 years later, this car chase was one of the best ever filmed.
What a fantastic job. Not just finding all the locations, but editing brilliance. Very enjoyable.
same thought, quite genius...
It's how he rolls. Check out his "Good, Bad & the Ugly" locations!
fabulous !!!
Word has it the scene where the Mustang crashed into the ditch in Brisbane was unplanned. Well done Herve, a truly brilliant piece and a wonderful tribute to Steve, Bill Hickman and everyone else involved in the production of Bullitt!
Awesome remake. Here we are in 2018 and this is truly a classic repo of the original.
Thank you- Many Bullitt fans that can't get to San Francisco will enjoy this ride.
I could go, but this is better. No sidewalk poop to avoid!
@@KutWrite ,
Glad I had all my business wrapped up and was gone from there way before all the city was destroyed by "You Know Who".
Who?
Dude: The last scene at the end where you're snoring in bed with Jacqueline Bisset was so funny, I was crying and almost peed my pants. It puts a whole different spin on the final few frames, where McQueen goes into the bathroom to wash his hands and looks into the mirror. A great ending to a terrific piece of artwork. THANK YOU!!
I think in reality he would have used the gun on him in the bed!
ditto 3 years later. thanks herve!!!
After all the hard work, he definitely deserved to be in bed there.
Credit where it's due... That was perfect in every angle.
The only thing missing is that pesky green VW. :-)
Great music

Roger C Great story!!...yes a class unto himself, what a thrill you got to meet him, Thanks for sharing! 👏🏻🎬
It is so great that you met him. He is renowned world wide as the coolest man on the planet. The only deaths that stick with me are McQueen and Lennon. Kennedy comes third sorry.
And both in 1980 irony.
What brand of cigarettes were they?
James I bought the carton and I just remember they were unfiltered. Sorry Roger C.

R.I.P Steve McQueen, and the other people who worked on this masterpiece.
He is he's in Heaven w/his Lord & Savior Jesus
Wow, this is amazing. The best Bullitt locations remake I've seen! Adding this one to my favorites and will be rewatching it many more times!
Watsup? Big fan of what you do man, keep it up
is a incredible job!, AND, SEE HOW HE DOES !!

That was absolutely awesome you actually put yourself in the movie. Your the daddy when it comes to movie location videos on RUclips.
THIS! WAS! AWESOME! Love the ending, too. Bullitt is my all-time favorite movie, so thank you for doing such an excellent re-creation!
Just watched this again - sir - you are a master filmmaker.
LOVE the last SCENE...!!!
It is amazing that San Francisco still has so many beautiful iconic buildings and roads.. Great job Herve..!!
That was a epic tribute to one of the most iconic films ever .
Best car chase in movie history!! The logistics of the chase scene must have been incredible!
I loved how you inserted yourself into the scene when he was getting the newspaper! Really cool...the ending was hilarious as well!
John Meyer Makes Ya Wonder If He Should Got To MIT. I Mean It’s Great Editing.

Outstanding! Came here after watching Bullitt again after hearing that one of the Mustangs from the movie just sold at auction for 3.7M.
$3.4 million.
This is not only great work, but shows what a classic American city San Francisco is. It looks almost exactly the same 50 years after the film was made. You can't do that in New York. One of the best things I have ever seen on you tube. A great tribute to McQueen and the movie. A+++++
excellent! well done! this illustrates how time is but a wrinkle of another dimension. eerie to see the same areas 50 years later!

Superb again! Who the hell thumbs down these videos? They ain't got no taste; that's for sure.
What a difference forty odd years makes. Thoroughly enjoyed this.
the best motorcycle jump and the best car driving ever filmed.
hes the best ever.
Thanks for resteping the chase. I'm from Queens NY and 1965 was my first year liveing san fan, been here in Northern CA every since.
Wow! Nice job! I could watch the chase scene a million times and I still get a rush.
Excellent. Stayed in the Amsterdam Hostel on Taylor Street back in April this year and quickly realised where we were. Perhaps the coolest video I've ever seen on RUclips. Great editing. I love how you put yourself in a few of the scenes.
Absolutely PRICELESS!! The twist at the end was HILARIOUS!! Thank you SO much for putting all this effort into this!!!!
LOVE this! The house in the beginning was built by our family in 1915 and designed by architect Henry C. Smith. It is now the Japanese Consulate. Thanks for making this great clip!
Beautiful house!
Everythingchad been said.....Brillant ! Amazing how a lot of people love this movie and remember it after so many years...

I've watched the movie at least a dozen times. I never knew this footage existed.
Thanks for uploading Herve.
So cool that you went and Tirelessly went and found All the locations from some of the best scenes in this movie!
The best frame for frame I have ever seen. A pleasure to watch. Thank you.
Fantastic! It's like a time machine. San Francisco hasn't really changed, that much. Most cities don't look anything like they did in 1968. Great job.
I watched this years ago when you first posted, and just re-visited it. I can appreciate the work involved in doing this. Turned out great and thanks for posting.
I’ve been in love with that black Charger since the first time I looked at it.
Unfortunately my Beetle came to its end upside-down on a freeway embankment in 1978 - not due to a car chase.
white firebird shows up several times too
Actually the White Firebird and the green Beetle were traffic control cars for the shoot, they were both being driven by people connected to the film. It's another reason why they show up so many times. Yellow taxi cab was another...
A masterful tribute to that epic and timless story aout good vs evil. Thank You...
One of my favorite movies of all time. Fascinating to see the locations that it was filmed.
Absolutely...one of the "coolest" videos here on YT.
Awesome work. Not just the outside scenes but the inside scenes also.
I love it when McQueen looks at the fresh produce then goes and picks up the frozen meals 😂. Excellent side by side comparisons.
That was well done! I am a Bullitt fan from 1968! Thank you!
Brillliant brilliant brilliant. Especially the last 20 seconds. You must love this movie even more than I do
Saw this movie in the 1960s it was great then, and still is great, job of matching the locations.
man you are flawless. a true creative individual and a brave adventurer. The way you edit attention to detail is candy for the eyes.
Herve, this was excellent. I love stuff like this. Right shots, right angles and the late model Mustang. One of my fav movies.
I saw this movie with my pa...i was a child but this movie and chase are the best memories of my childhood...this is the best video I ever have seen..!! thanks a lot..!!! ( San Jose Cal.)
It's fun to watch that split screen in those dramatic scenes!
Thankfully Herve didn't try to re-create the shotgun blasts, the fiery car crash or the explosion. The surprise at the end was great!
It doesn't matter how many times I watch this, I'm always amazed at the brilliant job you did. And the ending........just superb lol
Stunning attention to detail guy's.
Extremely well done.
A tremendous piece of work! How on earth 31 people took a dislike to this, I'll never know! I think it's terrific! Thanks!
Excellent. I figured out the chase route years ago and followed on Google Maps but the split screen editing is brilliant. Its a yes from the U.K.
I watched the movie "Bullitt" for the first time last night from start to finish. I grew up in San Francisco and I was able to identify a number of the filming locations. Obvious much thought and preparation went into this, bravo !
Incredible Herve! As a fan of Bullitt I have to say that was outstanding, the way you found and filmed the locations and a very impressive editing job too!. I could tell you were tempted to blow through some of those stop signs but you kept you wits! Once again way to go and keep up the good work!
Excellent! A classic film of 1968.
Herve, what a FANTASTIC video!! Such a pleasure to watch, you deserve an award for editing.
Thank you SO MUCH from this die hard Bullitt fan!!!!!
Great video montage Herve, you got talent! Impressive, do you live in the area? Thanks for the upload, Ciao, L
Just saw Bullitt last night, and saw your video today. Excellent work!
great job thanks its fun when you put the scenes over under to compare I like seeing how trees grew excellent job
Fantastic video. Thanks for taking the time and doing this. Still the best Mustang movie of all time and the best car chase ever!
Thank you, I'm adding this to my you-tube favorites.
What a GREAT Job! This must have taken many painstaking hours to put together. I remember seeing "Bullitt" with my mom when I was about 12 years old and it is still one of my favorite movies.
And the Academy Award goes to….. Amazing work in my opinion, I am very impressed!
Speechless..... You are witnessing a Master at Work!
Fine job, Herve, it brought back nostalgic memories of Bullitt; I was 13 in 1968. I was waiting for you to get airborne!
BADDASS! How did you identify all the out of city locations in the car chase? That is dedication. And I approve! Time well spent.
Great job! I wish to drive through those streets like Steve McQueen.
If nothing else; a great jazz score by Lalo Schiffrin
you really topped yourself with this one Herve. That was awesome! So cool on so many levels.
hahaha Nice ending.
Extremely well done. The only thing missing is the mysterious green Volkswagen that was passed at least four times. Great great work pal!!
1960’s & 70’s was great time to be alive
If you haven’t checked out all this guys work, it is incredible
Herve, every time I think you've done your best work you end up doing one even better. This movie had it all. Fast cars, one of the best car chase sequences in movie history, and fast cars. Did I mention fast cars? Well done sir. Bravo.
