maybe you missed it but he never made the jump in the Great Escape, that was Bud Elkins. His star was fading in the 70s and fading very badly. He lost out to guys who showed off the muscles like Bronson, Eastwood, Sean Connery and a young Harrison Ford and Stallone. Steve McQueen had no muscles to show off. Movie goers were over the moon with movies like Rocky, Star wars and Empire Strikes Back so they had a good idea what movies should be like. In the end he made movies that no one wanted to see like the Enemy of the People, Tom Horn and The Hunter which all failed miserably at the box office. So much cool you can play in your mid 40s. It's called upstaging. :)

A good buddy of mine, Tom Pinerri. Raced a saturday or sunday where Steve Mcqeen raced as well. Spoke so highly of Mcqeen's humility & just being a real normal dude at the race track. Tom's mother actually had Mcqeen on her 8 or 16 mm film. All positive, humble, helpful towards other "Racers". Probably, had that same "Blood- runing through his veins". Just a positive snipet of a STUD!
I agree. I saw it when it was originally released and since as well. But many who were not race enthusiasts would not get it! And I have to say that the sub-plot (or was it the entire plot?) was seemingly an afterthought.
@@stewartw.9151 Yes! Like muscle car "car guys' wouldn't give a flying fuk about LeMans 'cause it ain't "Murcan" enough. But any well rounded car guy with any sense of refinement would be all over this film like a tall dog in heat! And yes, the doc seems to alluded to the plot, in a traditional sense, being an afterthought. But those with keen automotive sensibilities quickly realize the plot is in the inherent drama of this intense and classic race that is LeMans.
I went to the 24 hours of Daytona 10 years ago. I planned on flying to Orlando, renting a minivan that had a DVD player. Van and player scored. Had Infield parking from Friday night. Had dinner. Opened the doors and hatch. Inserted the LeMans DVD and cranked it up. Other campers walking by took interest. In very few moments I had a crowd watching that GREAT movie.
Exceptional and one and only Steve McQueen. We, the audience LOVED him.... we will never forget him. handsome. Smart, smartass, , rebel, but loving his kids❤️!!! That's about all you need! 👍
Robert Vaughn was a close friend of Steve and and said in an interview that they went to a motorcycle race where Steve was told the studio forbade his participation. On their drive back it started raining but even though the top was down they never got wet- Steve was driving soooooo FAST !!!
An ex Marine who made grown men weep with his looks, acting, conversation and allure; as with all genius he never once believed his status and/or intense PR; he was the epitome of a man's man.
Excellent story of a man. It brings out different sides of McQueen, mysteries, yet there's a thread. Even if you don't know who he is, it's a great story of a person in search of himself, a person who struggles, yet who is fueled by, his passions, a person who had nothing given to him, who had to figure it out and work hard. Watch it.
Partied with him in 1978 on the Sespe River at a place called Swallows Nest. He stopped at a liquor store and was buying beer. That’s where I was at the time. I met him shook his hand and told how much of a fan I was. He told me where he was going and said if I wanted to go I was invited to drink a few beers with him.
Steve McQueen was my favorite actor. He made a dozen best movies. The Sand Pebbles, Great Escape, Mag 7,Cincinnati Kid, TC Affair, Bullitt,Nevada Smith etc.
Exceptional video production. Narration, content, background music, compelling presentation, photography, interview subjects, and so on. Just flawless. And the subject being McQueen doesn't hurt.
Childhood is so important. A bad one can affect you for the rest of your life. He had a crap one that is why he was like he was. The Great Escape brilliant.
I agree. Our childhoods form the foundation of our lives. Steve McQueen's childhood was a mixed bag. He had an uncle who took care of him but was abandoned by his mother and father. His mother took him back at 12 but his stepdad was a jerk. He was then sent off to the boys home until 16. I think his childhood was a 2 edge sword and might probably had a lot to do with his drive in life to succeed but also left him empty and looking for happiness outside himself. His first wife Neely seems to be just a wonderful woman who also had a lot to do with his success but he couldn't just be happy with her, he had to look elsewhere. I always thought and have heard this in a couple of documentary's about McQueen, that he really identified with the part of Jake Holman in "The Sand Pebbles" which is why he did such a great job with that role and the movie is one of my favorites. IMO I think it's his best role.

My brother in law’s Mom was Norman’s cousin.
I remember when Steve McQueen past away. I only saw a glimpse of one of his movies. I know, though, that we lost a nice human being. I read that he was being treated for cancer. God bless him.
Steve was the man…… hands down.. even today
I met him in Prescott Arizona on the set of Junior Bonner. They hired a bunch of us young cowboys to help out and play extras. He was cool as can be. The whole town adored him. He brought one of his dirt bikes to the fairgrounds, and did some wheelies for us.
Steve McQueen was a man amongst men!
When a man was allowed to be a man!
God bless his soul.
Rest in glory!
Where has it all gone?............

It’s good to hear the truth about Steve. What an outstanding soldier.
Happy 91 st. B-Day S.M. You Will Always be My Hero. Semper-fi.
P.S. He Should Had Won the Oscar for "Papallion"
Thank you. He is the one, my all time favorite actor. a true man's man.
You had to be a bad ass to have James Coburn narrating your biography.
Class all the way with Coburn.
Wasn't James Coburn in Magnificent Seven with McQueen? Or was a different Mag 7??
@@HappyPlace5-bi2xeYes he was
Also great escape
James Coburn and Steve McQueen apparently where great friends.
Bravo!! Bravo!! Bravo!! I'm and so glad I was born young enough to have seen Steve McQueen's first movie he starred in and each and every other he starred in. All of them just great! He was born to be a star! I got to see them filming the car scenes on the hills and streets of San Francisco coming down the hill. Just happen to be walking there.
I wanted to be like Steve McQueen when I was a kid
Favorite Steve McQueen of all time for me is The Sand Pebbles . I remember watching it with my grand parents when I was a kid . Good times : )
Thank you for your Outstanding Documentary about 1 of The Greatest Actors Who Ever Lived. This was so very Inspiring. Im saddened to hear of his internal struggles but they made him who he was. I am also so sad that he died at onky 50 of Cancer 😢😢😢 . May God bless & rest his precious Soul ❤❤❤
I still try to watch his show, Wanted -Dead or Alive, every morning before I go to work. This man is truly missed!!
Jimmy Green I have it set up to record. It comes on every day, except Sunday.
The Fourth Headstone. His best
Couldn't have picked a better narrator. James Coburn. Really ties it together well.
Two of Bruce Lee's top students.
In the U.K we saw the Magnificent Seven and fell in love with Steve McQueen. The coolest dude on the planet.
jack freeman idk why Mr.Yul Brynner doesn't like him
@@mikerivers695 He felt that McQueen kept trying to upstage him.
@@2011littlejohn1 maybe he's that conscious what steve can do in their scenes together
@@mikerivers695 It's a matter of McQueen's behaviour and record. For example if you watch The Magnificent Seven - anytime they are interacting - if Bryner is talking McQueen is always doing something instead of just listening such as fanning himself with a hat - anything to distract from Bryner's speech. It's called upstaging. :)
@@2011littlejohn1 like when Steve's playing with his hat while Yul's doing his dialogue
Coolest man on earth; 1 in a million; he was all: fashion, style, understatement. Gone by too soon
Im very happy to know that before his diagnosis he became a Born Again Christian. He was asked if he had any regrets to which he answered "I wish I had more time to tell people about Jesus and what He can do for their lives".
So glad to hear! I always wondered about this! God bless him❤️💜
@@mariefricchione437 Yes. He wanted to start flying and a friend directed him to a flight instructor who just so happened to be a Christian. One thing led to another and Steve began to attend the instructors church.
In high school I had my bedroom walls totally covered with pictures of Steve McQueen I absolutely loved him every now and then my sister brings it up and we have a giggle I still love him I'm done talking now
You don't have to stop talking, we loved him too. Still do.
Le Mans was NOT a failure, the film is still the best motor sport related film ever made, seconded by none. I've seen it more than a dozen times.
As a life-long gearhead, I couldn't agree more!
American Graffiti (not motor sport) and LeMans are top two to me.
I agree a true classic film The first time I saw it I thought finally a real racing movie. Steve McQueen is a legend.
Steve McQueen was the Daniel Craig of my youth. He was cool and I felt something special when I watched his movies. He was dangerous yet gentle too.
Never be another, I think the days of a James Dean , a Marlon Brando, and Steve McQueen are gone ,but they were mesmerising on the screen and in life .
Two of them were bi-sexual...what does that tell you about your conclusions?
R.I.P., Steve McQueen, your legacy lives on and on for generations to come.
One of my all time favorites, RIP
Exceptional and one and only Steve McQueen. We, the audience LOVED him.... we will never forget him. handsome. Smart, smartass, , rebel, but loving his kids❤️!!! That's about all you need! 👍
Nope...how about being kind towards your fellow human beings?...he was a minimalist in that regard!
Robert Vaughn was a close friend of Steve and and said in an interview that they went to a motorcycle race where Steve was told the studio forbade his participation. On their drive back it started raining but even though the top was down they never got wet- Steve was driving soooooo FAST !!!
there will never be another like Mcqueen.. Bullitt and The Sand Pebbles, are my favorite roles he played.
I was raised watching a a legend.
BUT I ALREADY COULD TELL .
Steve Was Way Ahead of His Time. God Bless Him.
An ex Marine who made grown men weep with his looks, acting, conversation and allure; as with all genius he never once believed his status and/or intense PR; he was the epitome of a man's man.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤
His role in the Sand Pebbles was epic!! Steve McQueen was the salt of the earth a man for the ages!! authentic! An American hero! 🇺🇸🙏
Settle down Spanky! :P
Steve was the first actor to make $1 million dollars a movie.
American hero? I don't think so try our fighter pilots Now that's an American hero...but he was the king of cool
I totally agree.
Just watched it again still great.
He was one of the greatest actors I ever watched from tv to the over screen.
Smoking did not help!
I sure can remember when it was the talk of the town when he passed away i was 14 years old. RIP Steve McQueen
That's also why his performance in Papillon is so great.
“The Magnificent Seven” - one of the greatest Westerns of all time. Certainly my favourite!
Bullitt, the best car chase scene ever.
Live and Die in LA
The sloppiest pile of shit ever as a car chase. Tired Detroit iron struggling to to do anything.

I have some of his movies. I never tire of watching them, especially Bulitt, we lost him too soon, but his legacy will always remain. R. I. P
The Sand Pebbles, the only good part of Bullitt is the car chase, The Sand Pebbles is infinitely better.
@@dukecraig2402 There was more to bullit than the car chase, such as the character he portrayed. I haven't seen sand pebbles. I would think that is a good movie simply because of Mcqueen, he was one of those actors that had it all, he left us too soon.
@@victorformosa2825
The rest of Bullitt aside from the car chase is weak, the car chase carries the movie.
The Sand Pebbles is a vastly superior movie to Bullitt, the characters and their story arcs are light years beyond the characters in Bullitt, The Sand Pebbles is probably not only his best performance but also probably the best movie he was ever involved in, it's a very profound movie full of the lessons of human nature.
@@dukecraig2402 I haven't seen sand pebbles, but if mcqueen is in it I would think its a good movie, as was cincinatti kid etc, the guy was way up there with others of his generation, still, its all about opinions.
@@dukecraig2402 Sand Pebbles, yes. Bullitt the car. What was the line from one of the Batman/Darkknight movies about the car..."Chicks, love the car." lol, Hell all us guys loved the green Mustang,
I think The Getaway is one of the best action films ever made. Papillon is an astoundingly work of art. And Love With the Proper Stranger is so much more than a chick flick.
@irishgoy, Yup! There was another version made later but I forget who starred in it? Bronson maybe?
Have to agree with you there..getaway was his best.
Thomas Crown was his best, my fav.
Did more in his short 50 years than most could do in 4 lifetimes. And did it by living life on his own terms.
💯
Second after James Dean.. Became a legend in such a short period of time...
He was a real G.
I always remember a Motley Crue lyric when I think of him....”If you want to live life on your own terms, you’ve got to be ready to crash and burn....” Steve certainly did both. You’re so right, what a life.
Errol Flynn: hold my beer.
Thankyou’. For this! Steve McQueen’❤. My favorite man’
One of my favorite actors. He was a flawed human being but aren’t we all?
Actually, many folks are not seriously flawed at all.
Having flaws makes us human.
The One and ONLY - Steve McQueen!💕
This documentary show without a doubt has no equal. To get all these big stars talk about their friend is amazing. Eagerly looking up all episodes

That I say too, Steve and Clint Eastwood, the best role Steve played ❓ The role as a daddy.... 👍🏼👍🏼🙂 A real man.
Gotta include Paul Neuman!
Clint Eastwood's latest film, Cry Macho, could be his last film. He's 91 and still looks great. Hope he's around for a long time.
One of my favourite actors and certainly one of the best since I met him on screen when I was 8 with "The Magnificent Seven"....thank you Steve.
Steve McQueen....the man's man!!!!!!!
Used to watch Wanted Dead or Alive on B/W TV . I'm 73 now in 2023 .
Movie icon, but more than that. True to himself.
He Brought IT, He Sold his Role in All his acting-- and I bought it ! A believable role player!! Passion- deep deep emotions - melting smile & eyes
Steve was the best, in his acting career and in his personal life, I was gutted when he died and I still am
His personal life was a mess!...he cheated on his lovely wife often, and did not take care of himself....talented for sure...but also a jerk.
@@curbozerboomer1773He had a sad upbringing
What a remarkable woman his first wife was. I'm so glad he was a good father. I was in high school when Bullitt came out. The chase scene was a HUGE deal with the boys. Funny now to think no one had ever seen that in a movie, since now you can't watch a movie without one.
Neile Adams was a revelation -she was a WWII teenage spy during the Japanese occupation of Manila and carries shrapnel wounds from the Allied liberation -no shrinking violet. Her genuine love and affection for McQueen shows in every frame and their lifelong relationship and two clearly sane, happy offspring testify to her beautiful enduring character.
Why was she remarkable? Didn't she divorce Steve?
One of the greatest!
He was the kind of actor that didn't have to say much, but the intensity was just beneath the surface as he showed in Bullitt
Amazing actor
At his height, Steve McQueen was acknowledged as the coolest guy on the planet.
He still is.
He was the greatest of all. It’s 2018 and I still miss him. There aren’t any true Movie Stars anymore. We have people who get paid a lot of money but they will never be true Movie Stars. I grew up in the 60’s 70’s and 80’s with real stars. Now all we have are Kardashian’s and Cruise lol. I think I’m going to go ride my motorcycle now. I miss you Steve, I can’t wait to see you again upstairs. Thank you
Well said my friend.
A bunch of wannabe’s
Pitt comes closest.
Tom Cruise tries hard to be a big action hero but he never has the presence and coolness of McQueen or Neman or Connery.
