In his youth there is no more handsome man in Hollywood. As his beauty receded with age, his acting got better and better. He was authentic, dramatic, and natural! When that smile emerged, his face became beatific! Bill Holden is one of my favorite actors and he will never be forgotten.
Good job of presenting Mr Holden. The comments from the other actors and the directors are especially thoughtful and touching. He was a friend of my grandfather, who visited the Safari Club on occasion. I wish I had known him. He was as Lumet says, charming and heartbreaking. My all time favorite actor, and The Wild Bunch and Bridge on the River Kwai all time favorite movies. He was light years better than the pale, fey, limp imitations of men we have parading around on the screen today. And the films have never been equaled. Hollywood just went to hell when it went corporate.
At the famous Granada cinema in Tooting, London, I went as a young boy to watch the movie, LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDOUR THING. The movie was wonderful! Willam Holden gave a great performance. The people watching in the cinema found the movie and the music really emotional. Some were in tears at the end. The Golden days of the cinema and Holden had the magic in abundance!
It’s my understanding that the two great actors in that movie bald an intense dislike for one another- especially Jennifer Jones. She agreed to act in it because her husband directed it- David Selznick.
Happy Birthday William Holden. What a wonderful actor you were! i never get tired of watching you on film. A lot of actors today could learn from you. You never never gave a bad performance.

My grandfather knew Bill Holden in Africa - he was a great friend of Bill's partner Ray Ryan at the Kenya safari club they owned and my grandfather and his second wife liked to visit them there. I still have a grand photo of Daddy Dick and my Aunt Luise with Bill on the terrace there. I wish they'd taken me along! William Holden was so much deeper and intelligent than Hollywood portrays. Curiously no one ever comments that depression and alcoholism are diseases...and often the torture and even madness create the most magnificent art and gives us more honesty and integrity than we can imagine. Holden was amazingly talented. How lucky we are to have shared his beauty, his grace...his quest for a social truth in the scripts he chose, his magnificent voice and presentation and the quintessential American style throughout, all so mesmerizing. He was my favorite so glad he turned OUT to be the man i thought he was and he was very handsome AND wouldn't have aged as much as he did in 50s and his 60s it was his alcohol problem but he had s smile anf personality that came right off the screen and was infectious because as they said he wss real and all around good guy.

The contrast between actors in Holden’s day and those today couldn’t be more profound. Yes, they did their wild things and weren’t always faithful husbands but there was a steadfastness, honesty, and intelligence in them that is rarely seen today, save for a handful of exceptions (e.g. Matthew McConaughy). Today’s actors seem to think that making self-righteous political statements while walking the red carpet at some awards show or yucking it up on late night shows represents courage or convictions. Always adored William Holden. Hope he’s found his well deserved place in Heaven!
The camera loved him. Impossible to be a star without that. He knew he was blessed and maybe felt guilty about that. Sad that he let alcohol run over him. His many performances were riveting.
He was possibly a hollow man: his brothers both died in plane crashes (one was shot down, the other was lost while flying on a business trip). His marriage was a flop (he was a philanderer). Hitting the bottle might have been the only way of handling the guilt and torment that he woke up to every day.
Funny thing is I first saw him, on I Love Lucy,. Me being a little girl then, not having seen many movies then, I had never heard of him. But Lucy was acting like he was the cat's meow, I wanted to know more of this William Holden. Having seen more of his movies since then, he is a great actor, with a good attitude, and well liked in Hollywood community. ✌
They don’t make men like like that anymore. Even a drinking man. I think that the alcohol was stronger back then. During prohibition it was allot of home made.
I truly miss actors who at least on screen set a strong moral example. Many, admittedly and unfortunately, did not hold the same off screen. Nevertheless they offered a positive example to impressionable youths - like me.
I love him also in the world of Suzie Wong Technic Love is a Many-Splendored Thing he had a voice and a demeanor that you just wanted to reach out and hugging and love it and I'm glad he got to be loved by wonderful woman that is he actress from Hart to Hart with Robert Wagner And I also looked Robert Wagner and I loved Natalie Wood and I also loved Jill st. John they seem to all know each other quality Quality quality quality

Not only was William Holden an exceptional actor and a feast on the eyes.....I really love his voice. I am disappointed with some of the negative comments on here regarding his addiction. They seem very judgemental. Above all Holden remains relevant to this day with his film acting in classics and his efforts to preserve the wild in Africa.
May God bless his soul ! Such souls visit the planet rarely with selfless love for mute creatures. But how alcohol has affected the family is really very sad.May BabaJi bless his family ! His work is amazing !!
One of my favorite actors.
William Holden was a great actor and one of his best in // the horses soldiers // great guy and great actor sadly miss on our screens //
But not forgotten as long as they put his films on the t.v he will live in our hearts for ever // r .i.p Willian god bless you and keep you in n gods house
I LOVED the horse soldiers!
There are no “stars” today. Lots of scolders, lots of “I’m holier than thou” attitudes. But no stars. Maybe Nicole Kidman?
The camera loved him. Impossible to be a star without that. He knew he was blessed and maybe felt guilty about that. Sad that he let alcohol run over him. His many performances were riveting.
He was possibly a hollow man: his brothers both died in plane crashes (one was shot down, the other was lost while flying on a business trip). His marriage was a flop (he was a philanderer). Hitting the bottle might have been the only way of handling the guilt and torment that he woke up to every day.
They forgot Jennifer Jones and his marvelous love story I believe it was called splendor in the grass Janet B

Excellent.!! something I just came upon and am thrilled I did.
they don't make them like any of those actors back then anymore
They don’t make men like like that anymore. Even a drinking man. I think that the alcohol was stronger back then. During prohibition it was allot of home made.
Oh, the silver screen actors, it was such a golden age of great thespians!
I love this man. Sunset Blvd - the best!!
I truly miss actors who at least on screen set a strong moral example. Many, admittedly and unfortunately, did not hold the same off screen. Nevertheless they offered a positive example to impressionable youths - like me.
