  • What's up, folks! I'm back with another Adam and the Ants reaction from the compilation Antics in the Forbidden Zone, and this one is also from their first album, Dirk Wears White Socks (1983). So join me as we get back to Adam and the Ants, and apologies, this video cut out slightly early (though not enough to warrant a proper add-on). Cheers!
Also I run a Patreon featuring extra content of different types, so anyone interested in supporting what we do here on RUclips and getting early-access to video-watchalongs and reactions blocked on RUclips, as well as behind-the-scenes videos, video-reactions, and blooper-reels from my videos, can go here: / shnootz
And those who'd like to support the channel with a one-time donation can do so via PayPal, at billshattner@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Drummer on this song is Jon Moss of Culture Club. This album and the following King of the Wild Frontier both featured Burundi drumming. Malcom Mclaren gave Adam a tape of Burundi Black and pretty much required the use of it featured prominently and the appropriation of his look. After the first album, Malcom robbed the Ants from Adam and created Bow Wow Wow using same concept. If you listen to Burundi Black on here, you can literally hear Ant Music and King of the Wild Frontier. I love the sound and how it is used, but happy to discover where it actualloy came from.

I think early on, Adam Ant used two drummers, which is not common. It gave him quite an unusual sound.

Like a musical kick - short sharp and to the point. A wonderful blast of punk energy. Perfect.
The tribal drums of the intro remind me very much of "Antmusic" their song which was just on the horizon....i dont know whether there's 2 drummers on this track (1 of them would be Jon Moss on here) but when Terry Lee Miall & Merrick got on board the sound was set...this for me sounds like the beginning of that fantastic powerful tribal sound. Still sounds fresh, exciting and energetic and set Adam And The Ants apart.

I think a lot of the post punks bands in the London area had a lot of cross pollination. A lot of them knew each other, and people would swap bands from time to time.

This was definitely the first nod to the sound they moved towards: compare this to Xerox and it definitely has a more "tribal" feel.
As a young fan I bought some books on Adam Ant, some were the usual teenybop fodder but another did go into Adam's influences, which showed he had a deep understanding of history and social culture, especially the Native Americans, African tribes, the Dandy movement in ye olde Englande... and an active interest in art and design and all the Pop Art era.
That's what drew me into him, initially it was the music, the image and his popularity but when I read more into him, he wasn't just some punk with attitude with no clue about what "Anarchy" actually entails or some pop manager's puppet, he was a creative individual with a definite path to where he wanted to go

I love that, literally your comment just made me more curious about him and his art.

@mattsnider2667 he has had mental health issues all his life. Before he hit the big time he had been in institutions. At the height of his fame he hid it well but later when things weren't going well years later he had a very public breakdown after being mocked in a pub in London, he returned with a starting pistol and was arrested and sectioned. He later came through it and has recognised as bi-polar disorder and now talks openly and frankly about it to help others.
That aside , he is a clever, well read individual often misunderstood

@mattsnider2667 this is a documentary from 2003, it has a lot of songs u have yet to react to , but has a detailed history of hie music. Marco his fellow song writer is quite abrupt about him but I think they have since got on better terms
