  • I visited BioAqua Farm in Somerset to learn more about Aquaponics, a fascinating closed-loop food production system that produces fish and food with very little human interaction.
Buy my book, STUFF, to learn more about how people like Antonio use and reuse the stuff around them:

A massive thank you to Antonio, Amanda, and Noah at BioAqua Farm for having me along. You can find out more about their farm on their website: bioaquafarm.co...

National Curriculum in England: Science Programmes of Study
    - Animals Need Food (Key Stage 1 - Year 2) 1.4 : Describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food.
    - Habitats (Key Stage 1 - Year 2)1.2 : Identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other.
    - Living vs. Non-Living Things; Plants Need Water And Light; Animals Need Food (Key Stage 1 - Year 2) 3.2: Find out about and describe the basic needs of animals, including humans, for survival (water, food and air).
    - How Do We Use Food (Key Stage 2 - Year 3) 2.1 Identify that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food; they get nutrition from what they eat.
    - Plant Growth Conditions (Key Stage 2 - Year 3) 1.2 Explore the requirements of plants for life and growth (air, light, water, nutrients from soil, and room to grow) and how they vary from plant to plant.
    - Plant Growth Conditions (Key Stage 2 - Year 3) 3.3 Recognise that soils are made from rocks and organic matter.
    - Particle Nature of Matter (Key Stage 2 - Year 4) 3.1 Compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases.
    - Particle Nature of Matter; Water Cycle (3-5 Version); Water Quality & Distribution (Key Stage 2 - Year 5) 3.3 Use knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to decide how mixtures might be separated, including through filtering, sieving and evaporating.
US Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems: Animals, Plants, and Their Environment
    - K-L-S1-1 Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive
    - K-ESS2-2 Construct an argument supported by evidence for how plants and animals (including humans) can change the environment to meet their needs.
    - 2-LS2-1. Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow
    - W.2.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
    - 3-LS4-3. Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.
    - 3-LS4-4. Make a claim about the merit of a solution to a problem caused when the environment changes and the types of plants and animals that live there may change.
    - 5-LS1-1. Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water.
    - K-2-ETS1-1. Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool.

I'm 34. I graduated university 11 years ago, so it's nice to get a science lesson now and again. You learn something new everyday. Thanks Maddie!

What a tremendous talent. I ended up watching that in the car waiting for my child to come out of her Beavers class at Pets at Home, so I will blow her mind with my new found fish poo knowledge. Hip hip hooray for Maddie!

I take the water from my tropical fish aquarium and use it on my potted flowers when i do a waterchange. They grow amazingly, much better than using just tap water.
Obviously all the nutrients in the water the same as the farm. Only in mini. 😊
