Have you seen "Mickey, Blue Eyes"? with Hugh Grant? It's his best comedy and one of the best comedies EVER!
It was only around the 1980s that Notting Hill began its transformation from impoverished ghetto to the incredibly wealthy area it is now. A small house that could be bought for £10,000 in 1980 would now be worth several million now.
I was in Notting Hill in 1999 the week this film opened in London. I honestly had no idea at the time. I bought cargo pants (THE style at the time) and a framed picture for my (then) girlfriend.
You might try _Four Weddings and a Funeral._ PS: I have been presented to THE WHOLE FAMILY on the first date.

Another I can’t believe no one has done is Americas Sweethearts! Fantastic movie with an AMAZING cast of John Cusack, Cathrine Zeta-Jones, Julia Roberts, Billy Crystal, Stanley Tucci, and a hilariously hateable Hank Azaria. We get to see a fat Julia Roberts…. 😳 Ok, fat suit but still.

Probably because it's a British movie.
They have a very limited repertoire.
One of my favorite scenes of any movie is the part of Hugh Grant walking through the market as the seasons change. This is a romance movie I can watch over and over again for some reason lol.
14:41 the supporting characters are so colourful and so memorable. Thats what makes this movie such a gem. Its not that only the primary two characters are the focus, but also that they made an effort to the make the supporting characters have their unique characteristics which made them stand out.
The music in this movie just brings tears to my eyes. All 90 times I've watched it.
I forgot this was such a delightful film. In my opinion, this was the best pairing of Hugh Grant with an American actress. I'm surprised people don''t talk about it more.

I have always thought that William's walk through the market, and the seasons, was a very creative illustration of the passage of time.

My mum loves this film, she's the reason I watched it for the first time a few years ago and I too fell in love with it wondering why I hadn't seen it before 🥺💚
I love this movie, and I'm not into romance movies normally. But this has that awkward and british humor that makes it different, and less cheesy.

The "just a girl" line is classic, as is the brownie contest. I prefer its spiritual sequel of "Love, Actually" and recommend it if you've missed it.

37:10 best scene in the movie. And its not just the line. Its the way William and Anna say it to each other, fantastic. It really hits you to the core.
This film is one of if not the greatest rom-coms ever made. Notting Hill is actually a town in London, and in high school I knew a girl that lived in Notting Hill before she moved to the States.
This is on top of my comfort movies. It's simple yet it just makes you smile at the end.

Great reaction, love that you lived it. The supporting cast added so much to this movie. So much more than supporting cast in other romcoms, they’re generally forgettable. But, I think that’s kind of a thing with British actors. They tend to have great supporting characters… full of character!
i'm suprise you are the only youtuber that do reaction to this movie. i'm in my 40's not really into rom com but last week i felt like watching romcom, Notting Hill for the first time....this movie is so good. Julia Robert is glowing and Hugh Grant handsome nerdy look that we never really saw in movies these day. and your face grinning throughout this movie just like me, when the movie end i felt my cheek hurt from all the smiling. Perfect casting, great scriptwriting, just chef kiss!
Thank you for this. Because I think you are the only person who actually reacted to this movie from start to finish. To me this is the best rom-come of the 90s and probably up there as the best rom-coms of all time. Hugh Grant delivers a masterful performance and to me this is Julia Roberts best performance in a rom-com settings, yes even better than Pretty Woman. Every scene they are in together, you feel the sparks flying. One of my favorite movies of the 90s and of the genre. And the supporting characters are just not some sideshow attraction that you don't remember, all of them are memorable in their own quirky, goofy, working class British ways.

Easily my favourite Richard Curtis film. The gutter press aspect adds that little bit of edge to the film, particularly in the context of Hugh Grant's activism trying to reign in the worst aspects of tabloid journalism.
Man Hugh Grant is excellent in this. He is the definitive rom-com man in this movie.
This is by far my favorite Hugh Grant film, but his character in Love Actually is so lovely! I completely agree with you, Hugh in glasses is so handsome👌!!

My wife and I have enjoyed this since first seeing it in the theater. And it’s definitely on our minds whenever we visit London…and Notting Hill’s Portobello Road, which is filled with interesting shops.
This movie is so good! I'm fussy on rom coms because they're often so cheesy, but this one is brilliant. And I say that as someone who doesn't particularly like Julia Roberts or Hugh Grant, but their chemistry is so good. It's one of those movies that if you're channel surfing and you find it on TV, you can't NOT watch it to the end.
Never thought I'd miss that oh-too-busy part of the UK. But now... and that really is a good group of friends, and he's a kind man. Things I missed when I saw this years ago in the theater.

18:40 Ronan Keating's When You Say Nothing At All and Shania Twain's You've Got A Way at the end credits are two of the best songs used in the RomCom genre.
This is the first time I'm watching a reaction to this movie, and it's so strange. I'm filling in all the dialogue that was cut out in my head. It's actually a little tiring. But I still love it. I love all your reactions.
Really enjoy your reactions, if you like a bit of 90's Hugh Grant you may well like Four Weddings and a Funeral, similar level of british quirk, romance and humour.
I love this film so much, the nostalgia of Ronan Keating is just a bonus.

This film also really stands up well on repeat viewings, some of the witty banter and subtle characterizations are often missed the first time.
Not exactly a rom com but The Weitz brothers About a Boy with Hugh Grant is more of a bromance, but with a similar tone and humour.
Of course the other RC that I would recommend, if you haven't seen it is Rob Reiner's, When Harry Met Sally(1988).
One more film to consider, that defies category's, and that more often ends up with men blubbering, is Phil Alden Robinson's, Field Of Dreams (1989).
I think that most reactors are genuine in their "first time" declaration, and this would be one of the films that they'd likely have seen already. It's one of the classics.
Can't believe this is your first time watching this movie, this is one of my Mom's favorites, it always reminds me of her and I like to watched it with her, it's one of those romantic comedies that I consider "fresh" and don't have problems to rewatch, plus the british background and characters, I really like Hugh Grant and his chemistry with Julia Roberts at the prife of her career, someday I will go to Notting Hill really.

I've watched this reaction twice because it's a favorite movie, and it shouldn't go without saying how much fun it is to watch a movie with you. Most reactors I watch are fun...they smile, laugh, offer little comments, cry sometimes, it's all good. When I watch you, you seem to feel what I feel while watching, which offers a compound effect. Two of us together, watching a movie. So at the expense of sounding ridiculous, I just watched this with a friend, and that made it really special.

Usually hate romcoms with a fiery passion, but ♥ this & few other films by same writer (Love Actually & Girl in the Cafe)
One of my best friends and I went on this writer's workshop thing to London, and there was a big to-do to end the whole week with all the delegates, and stuff, and she was really looking forward to it. And I made us miss the whole thing, coz I insisted on walking from Paddington to Notting Hill. We were flying out the next day, and I refused to leave London without doing that walk from the movie. I maintained that we were filmmakers and it would be sacrilege if we didn't do it.

Loving watching this with you, one of my favorite movies! After watching Pretty Woman at university, and as a British guy living in London for 10 years after University, I spent most of my life hoping Julia Roberts would just show up in my life! So Notting Hill was almost exactly the movie of what I imagined my life to be one day... and BTW, we STILL need to find a girl for me too! ;)
The girl in the wheelchair is sooo goddamn beautiful! I'm amazed that I haven't already memorised the actress's name.

Everyone usually recognizes Hugh Bonneville (here as Bernie) who later plays Lord Grantham in Downton Abbey.... But there's another actor here from a different hugely popular TV series: Tim McInnerny (here playing Max, the married friend) who's in Game of Thrones, as Lord Glover!
Oh yeah, I did not recognize Tim at all! I find that so many men look so different with facial hair vs. without.
Tim McInnerny (Max) is an old favorite of mine from his supporting roles in the "Black Adder" TV series, which was (co-)written by Richard Curtis, the screenwriter here. (It's a completely different type of show, bawdy parodies of English history starring Rowan Atkinson, but McInnerny makes an excellent straight man.)
For more "Richard Curtis does romance" try "Four Weddings and a Funeral" (1994) or "Love, Actually" (2005). Hugh Grant stars in both.
there was a golden age of british rom-coms in the late 90's early 2000's most starring hugh grant that are worth checking out, four weddings and a funeral, love actually (obviously), about a boy (not really a rom com), bridget jones, sliding doors, about time (more recent) worth checking out if that's your thing.
Yay. Was so happy when I saw this movie pop up on Netflix. Saw it when it came out in theaters and forgot how much i enjoyed it. I always think of this movie when I hear some mention of big feet. Yep. Mischa Barton. Spike was played by Rhys Ifans who was xenophilius lovegood in harry potter (years after seeing that one that i learned about THAT connection) and alec baldwin has anuncredited cameo as Anna's jerk boyfriend . Had been so long since I'd seen it I had completely forgotten about THAT.
Rhys also plays Otto Hightower in the new show, House of the Dragon, which I just finished watching. So interestin seeing him in a very serious role right after I had just watched this movie.

Always felt that what really made this movie was the supporting actors. Good script. Great actors, without whom the film would be crap.

Oh, the 24m point on love and being a choice...
I used to think this was totally true. Sincerely and honestly.
Every ended relationship, including marriage, had that break point where my feelings stopped cold.
It seemed quite rational to see it as true, as when I chose to not accept the bad or stop the relationship I just... did. And the feelings died.
Then I actually fell completely and entirely in love. At age 50. Entirely unexpectedly, and very nearly against my will.
I was CONSUMED by love for him. And since he had pursued me for months before I cracked and went on that one date, well... he was very much wooing me and continuing the dynamic.
Yet...
No red flags acknowledged to myself, or seeing things clearly about what I could never be in his life, or all the logical social or life reasons it was a bad match did a single thing to lessen my feelings or create some distance or perspective.
So after 5 years, off and on, of meeting his little boy and falling in love with HIM, seeing him when he wanted to and having an insane chemistry, sharing his life events, being a friend and a sensible sounding board... KNOWING he had heart desires I would never be able to give him, and finally letting him him go so another could be his sole focus and future- even though he kept coming back and wanting me also *sigh* - I held strong in not making contact.
I very nearly broke me in those first 2 years. Terrible. I cannot describe how broken I became.
I only pulled it together for family and when crisis came calling, but not fully. Never fully.
I will never be who I was before and my heart and soul, mind and body, are entirely his.
I love him as completely today as much as I did 12 years ago. Even after 6 years of no contact or anything and telling myself it was time to let go and move on, I accepted this was forever.
And I finally understand why my grandmother never remarried or even had a date after being widowed in her mid 30s- my grandfather was it for her. And he last words in hospice at age 89 and immediately before she passed were "Julian, you came for me".
One day, if you are very lucky or perhaps cursed, it may happen to you too.
I would highly recommend the movie the three Musketeers from 1993 for you to react to. Adventure and a bit of romance and a lot of favorite 90's actors
Saw this three times in the theatre. I always want to talk like Hugh Grant for a week after he's so ridiculously charming and winning. This movie chokes up my cynical heart. You got me, you daft prick.

For some reason the premise for this film - average joe meets and dates famous actress and they end up falling in love - is the most like an anime.
Another great hugh grant movie is 4 weddings n a funeral!
Great reaction! This is one of my favorite films, but when I see William not prevent Anna from opening the door when the reporters are mobbing the place it's awkward, because in real life William would never have let Anna open that door. I accept that it was done for plot development, but I always wish that this bit of dramatic license could have been avoided by a more realistic scenario. It's a minor niggle, for an otherwise excellent movie.
Also, letting Spike open the door after Anna opened the door was an even bigger fail. I'll admit it was funny, but in real life William would have tackled him before letting him open the door in his underwear. Okay, it's just a movie--but I have a strong desire for realism, even in a rom-com. To me, the best 'realistic' films don't make me say to myself "I don't think that would happen in real life." By 'realistic' I mean non-fantasy and non-science fiction films (fantasy and sci-fi are fundamentally speculative so you have to be willing to suspend disbelief at times).
You should watch four wedding and a funeral
I remember Julia Roberts had terrible trouble with the paparazzi she broke up with her fiance and was running, she ended up in Ireland, crying in a taxi , the driver, pulled over spoke to her for a few hours , ( old man ) ended up inviting her to stay with him and his family, which she accepted, they remained close and eventually when she got married she asked him to give her away at her wedding ( her father was deceased) . I love that story . ( i think she stay for a week )

It's always easier for a wholesome, shy, book store owner to find a love interest when they look like a young High Grant.
Hey, please consider another VERY overlooked movie called Americas Sweethearts from 2001. It’s criminally overlooked and is one hell of a smart romcom. The cast alone should intrigue you. It’s got Cathrine Zeta-Jones and John Cusack in the lead with Julia Roberts in a more supportive role. Then there’s Billy Crystal, Stanley Tucci and Hank Azaria at his peak appropriately inappropriate hilarity.

In general, I find myself resistant to Richard Curtis, who tends to write things, whether they're one-liners or whether they're whole premises, that I just find tip the scales to the wrong side of unpleasant. But it was fun watching you have a good time with this movie, and to watch a pared-down version that kept the stuff I liked and loses stuff I didn't. Definitely looking forward to other rom-coms, a genre historically underserved by RUclips reaction channels.

@@kaiielle In most cases, I find he can get a little sexist or misogynistic. My recollection (which is fuzzy!) is that this one wasn't too bad, but I feel like you probably cut out some jokes from the Spike character that I thought went too far into making the character gross. I also feel like I also thought the movie was too long like you did.
That said, I have much bigger problems with Curtis's About Time, and of course his magnum rom-com opus, Love Actually. The one I think is pretty good is Four Weddings and a Funeral, although even that has some lines I dislike.

@@kaiielle I feel like About Time is weird because having this power fundamentally alters their dynamic. It gives him so much power that he doesn't ever tell her about, and which he sometimes uses in manipulative ways.

I don’t understand why you have My Own Private Idaho on your list. That’s not a romance, and it was disturbing subject matter for me. I’ve never heard of Before Sunrise.

You've Got Mail is one of my favourite romance movies! My Own Private Idaho was a top-rated movie in a 90s romance film list that I was looking at, which is why I grabbed it for the poll. It is marked as a drama/romance, not a rom-com. Didn't stick to rom-coms exclusively.

Last thing, promise. I was going through your reactions and saw that you’ve done all of the Star Wars movies. Have you seen Mel Brooks movie Spaceballs? If not, AND you like silly comedy, you must watch Spaceballs. It is a parody from 1987 of the original Star Wars film from 1977. Depending on your sense of humor, I’d suggest watching ALL of Mel Brooks films. He was a comedic genius.

Ah one of the last genuinely sweet and entertaining rom coms, utter fluff but enjoyable.
Also a very Richard Curtis version of Notting Hill, but that's to be expected.

He does not know her, he is nervous because he likes her, but not because she is famous, as far I remember. If you meet a famous person before you know the person is famous, for you this person always will be "normal", you won't have these strange, emberassing feelings you have with a celibrity.
Love: the first three months is a chemical reaction in the body. Through the smell we unconsciously know if the other person complete you reagarding the antibodies so that you can have a child the most healthly possible. After that: Love has to be grow up like a flower, giving it water, sun and so on, otherwise the flower dies.
Finally. You are the few who enjoy 80's & 90's Rom-Com movies. Tired of all the commercial Marvel, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings etc, which are fun to watch but you can only watch so many action flix. Please review the Queens of Rom-Com movies, Meg Ryan & Julia Roberts. Enjoyed your touching review of Notting Hill ❤.
It's funny you say that because I have Star Wars on my channel and am watching the MCU right now. 🤣 Am variety girl!
@kaiielle I think for you to be successful you must review a variety of genres. Unfortunately, when looking at the review list of RUclips movies 90% of reviewers are heavily weighted towards franchise movies, especially Marvel/Star Wars, Stallone/Schwarzenegger type mass shooting movies, & cheesy, plotless horror movies (the How To Be Slaughtered To Death 1 Million Ways kind of mindless movie). I am looking for reviewers who feature well scripted & good acting cast movies, not ONLY high box office films relying heavily on computer generated film scenes. I have yet to find a RUclips reviewer I would be happy to support as a patreon.
As for Notting Hill, I really enjoyed your review. You timed your comments perfectly, not speaking over the movie sequence, never constantly interrupting the movie scene (like many other RUclips reviewers) & your editing was great.
You spoke highly of this film but I was surprised you gave it only a 3.5 score. I feel the script was excellent, the cast had great chemistry, particularly Julia & Hugh. The movie soundtrack was perfect &, as you mentioned, perfectly chosen for the specific scene. Me? I would have scored it 4.5 minimum, very close to 5.0 for a rom-com.
I was very pleased to see you followed up with Academy Award winner Rain Man. Again, I understand you must have variety but please don't forget us who enjoy the classics & rom-coms. I have my eye on you..... 🙂
@@NicholasRamos Well, there's an algorithm/demand reason why reactors tend to watch certain genres. It's what people want! The reaction audience here on RUclips is weighted heavily male and most are middle-aged, so they want to see reactions to movies from certain decades and certain genres that they love. You can see for yourself the view differences between the movies I've reacted to. Also, most of the movies I react to are chosen by my Patreon community, which is also heavily male and between 25-50 years old. 😊 If you haven't already, you may want to check out Popcorn in Bed. I'm biased a bit because I moderate for her and am part of her Patreon, but she reacts to a WIDE variety of films and has a wonderful community that often want more obscure films. And to your comment about my star rating, this is precisely why I've stopped doing them in my videos, because star ratings will mean different things person-to-person. A 3.5 for me may very well be a 4.5 for someone else and I don't need to be berated about it. 😊
@kaiielle Hi Kaiielle, thank you for your response. Yes, like every business, you have to give your customers/audience what they want. But, can RUclips algorithms provide you with the number of people like me who appreciate my eras & genres who I would be willing to be a patreon? I doubt RUclips can figure that one out. Cause there are many like me who stand on the sidelines, watch only the movie reviews that interest me, and are not loyal to specific RUclips reviewers.
I am not surprised it's the 25-50 yr old males who determine which movies reviewers review. This explains to me why the popular RUclips movie reactors have very similar review listings. It's why I was drawn to your channel when I saw you were "open" to doing other movies, like Notting Hill.
May I ask, so I may consider being a patreon on your channel, how do you decide what movies you will review on your channel?
I am glad to hear you are associated with Popcorn in Bed. Because, it was the first channel I subscribed to as a Popcorn with Butter patreon. Unknowingly, I came to find EVERY movie that PIB chose to review on its channel had to win by its polling system. After just one week, knowing the age & gender of RUclips viewers & finding out PIB only used a polling system, I contacted Cassie & told her I would not be renewing my PIB membership after my first month. I found less than 10% of PIB's review list interested me. Far too low for me to continue staying on as a patreon. Again, please correct if I am wrong about PIB cause I told them my reason for terminating & she didn't respond back. I assumed no response from PIB meant my understanding was correct. Are you the same as PIB or do you have a different method of determining what movie to review. I know I am not alone? I am the "uncounted" by RUclips. I am the one that watches only certain RUclips movies, less likely grade the review, & definitely don't bother to financially support the channel. I have only watched your Notting Hill & Rain Man reviews. I have enjoyed both. Thank you.
@@NicholasRamos My Patreon community definitely has priority on deciding what I watch, but often I am the one deciding which movies go into those polls and picking those movies from my Suggestion Form, which is linked in the description of all my videos. This year I will be incorporating more RUclips polls. But I also decide what to watch sometimes too! Notting Hill was the winner of a 90s romance poll that I put on RUclips. Rain Man was the winner of a Patreon poll. I think I explained both in each video's intro, so hopefully you saw that. In every reaction, I always explain why I'm watching the movie in the intro.
I don't need you to be on Patreon, but you seem dead set on trying to convince me to change what I'm doing to earn your Patreon pledge. 🤣 It's a completely optional thing. In any case, I hope you find a reactor worth pledging to some day! I'm sure there is someone out there for you. Also, Cassie (PIB) doesn't choose EVERY movie through a poll. She has her Popcorn Pick of the Month every month and even outside of that she'll often decide a movie on her own. Selma, that just went on the channel, was one of those recent picks that she just decided to do! And about her not responding... she receives HUNDREDS of direct messages per day across her platforms, she cannot possibly respond to everyone.
