16:54 There actually isn’t. I learned it the hard way: saw the opportunity and played through the whole level again to try and take it, only to get crushed by the cork.
The Shovel Knight DLC really makes me wish that Megaman does something similar to this. Like let us play certain robot masters to get their sides of the story.
It's such a shame that Powered Up didn't do very well. While that game is a remake in the grander scheme, they added so much new stuff to it (playable robot masters included!). I would have loved to see what could have been if it did well enough for a follow-up (same goes for Maverick Hunter X).
I mean, I like the idea of having a few playable boss characters, but expecting them to make campaigns for all eight bosses in remakes styled like megaman powered up of every single game along with future games _and_ having all 8 characters _plus_ megaman (along with maybe protoman and bass) work well and be fun with the exact same levels but different play styles seems a bit much, wouldn’t you agree? A simple 1-3 unlock-able boss characters like shovel knight: treasure trove would be good enough in my opinion.
Bass and Proto Man is all I would love to have in Mega Man 11 and future main-line classic Mega Man games... Except I hope they change their moves for playable forms to more resemble their boss forms from some of the games, especially for Proto Man. He is supposed to dash instead of sliding and he is even supposed to run faster and jump higher than Mega Man.
I see a lot of people that don’t like Plague Knight’s controls use the float burst, but I feel like that completely kills any chance of finding out how fun he is once you learn to control him. There’s so much creativity and speed to his movement and he’s beyond kino

Funny story about King Knight, actually. Midway through the campaign, I stopped, and restarted with the code with all upgrades. Good luck with the Dragon Quest marathon, Johnny! You’ll probably need it.
I can't really explain why, but I REALLY love these Round 2 episodes. There's something nice about just revisiting an experience to take in everything new it had to offer over the years.
Plague Knight's control scheme just has a higher skill level than the other modes. If you master the different skills, he's the most mobile character in the game, but you have to work at it and practice. I'd say Plague Knight has the best control scheme, the others kind of just let the game play itself.
A best control scheme to me is one that appeals to both casual and skilled play, you know how like in Mario you can either walk to be careful or run with momentum when you have the skill. Obviously Plague Knight is appealing more to the latter.
@@islandboy9381 Plague of Shadows is meant to be played until you have beaten Shovel of Hope and had some practice. You shouldn't need to learn to walk.
Something that nobody seems to mention is that all of this DLC is free if you got the very first version of shovel knight on steam. At least I got all of the expansions despite only paying 10 euros
6:20 You don't actually get Plague of Shadows if you purchased Shovel Knight standalone and not on Treasure Trove, which is the collection. The only way to get Plague is to buy the collection for whatever damn reason

This has been one of my favorite indie games since I’ve picked it up. This is the first time I’ve watched a critique of it, because I’ve been scared of seeing people diss what I love, but you’ve done a terrific job showcasing some of the downsides to the title that I’ve never thought of before
When the girl who sells you upgrades you missed gets happy, I don’t think it’s strictly because she’s getting paid, but based on how she speaks, I think she potentially has the hots for Specter Knight. Also he totally should have been called Death Knight
Maaaan this makes me want to play this game that much more. My backlog is already so large though, I don't know when I will get around to purchasing and playing this, but it will definitely happen eventually!
King of Cards is actually one of my favorites of the DLC campaigns. I really liked the smaller levels and King Knight's playstyle gave me real Wario Land vibes. Also Joustus is fun and getting the undefeated trophy is not nearly as hard as you think it would be. as long as you found all the secret cards in the hubs and didn't tackle the houses as soon as they were available. I managed a perfect Joustus run on New Game+.
Man. Every time I hear someone who didn't enjoy or get Plague Knight's controls my heart sinks. Getting good at his movement is one of the most satisfying aspects of the game. I get that people are frustrated because he doesn't have conventional controls, but King Knight supposedly does and I found myself dying a lot more often in his campaign outside of my control compared to Plague Knight.
Johnny, I respect your opinion, but I found King of Cards to be the best game, then again, Wario Land: Shake It! is my favorite game of all time. I appreciate the look back on the series and every bit of humor you packed into it. Thank you.
Shovel of Hope was actually my least favorite of the 4, I found it to be the most basic and uninteresting in both gameplay and story. It is a solid game but it didn't really grab me, I didn't really care much for Shovel Knight as a character, much preferring the other knights. And the gameplay, again was solid, but wasn't the most interesting. I had a rather good first impression of Plague of Shadows because the gameplay was weird and different and just more fun I found. Plus I really like Plague Knight as a character and the story of it was much more interesting. And I could literally just say the same thing about Specter and King Knight, I found all 3 of them to be far better in all aspects. King Knight, I don't know man I feel like you aren't giving enough credit to him, I mean I knew how it would end, but it still was rather impactful. I will agree that Specter Knight is the best of them though.
As predictable as it was, I really liked King Knight's ending. Especially that silent, final screen. Oddly chilling. It's also hilarious to end this awesome game as a whole in such a rather depressing way xD
Plague of Shadows and King of Cards were both games that I didn’t jive with as well on the first play through, but I ended up loving them a lot more on the second and third once I got used to the controls. But I will say, the final boss of King of Cards is the worst part of Shovel Knight
@@trevoraven3293 Probably Triumvirate, Cardia was pretty fun IMO. I didn't find either of them to be very bad, although I think I remember Triumvirate having some kind of 1 shot attack halfway in.
I'm a little disappointed that genderswap mode is limited to Shovel of Hope. I actually want to play as the female versions of Plague, Specter and King Knight.
6:09 I just want to remind everyone that Cory Barlog (the director of God of War II and Dad of War) confirmed that Kratos' cameo in Shovel Knight is canon to the rest of the God of War series. So Johnny has already knocked off one game for his future God of War Marathon.
Man I actually really liked King Knights control scheme. I think the only problem I have with it is that there could be a visual sign to to show if he could dash or not, kinda like Celeste. I did get used to it after the first level and now it’s basically muscle memory at this point, but still, It’d be helpful for people just starting out. I saw a lot of lets players and streamers struggle with that at first
As someone who moved into his first apartment last summer, I completely relate to the neighbor issue. The noise always seemed to happen right when I needed to be asleep, which sucked ass because I work 12 hour shifts. Fortunately the landlord finally kicked them out. my order from least to best from 2 angles is as followed -gameplay- King of Cards - Plague of Shadows - Shovel of Hope - Specter of Torment -story- King of Cards - Shovel of Hope - Specter of Torment - Plague of Shadows btw about King of Cards, F that final boss and its bottomless pit nonsence and that Joustus secret boss is awsome
Plague Knight best DLC, don't @ me. Although, I don't think I finished Spectre or did anything in KoC. I just love the movement, the burst is so clean.

King of Cards is my second favorite campaign besides the original. Love the mechanics, Joustus was neat, and the hidden boss was a treat. Only major problem I had was reusing the boss fights and some nitpick about the continuity. This entire package is great and well worth the price.
I, in no manner, mean to undermine Johnny's honest experience with King of Cards, but I do wonder if maybe the fact that he played the campaigns back to back, and this one was last, impacted his enjoyment of it because he was exhausted by when he reached this one. The reason I say this is because, this is probably the first time I've heard anyone say King of Cards was the least fun of the campaigns (and also because this one was my favorite one lol). The ending may be off-putting to some, but I just LOVED it so much, especially the post-credits scene. It's such a hilarious ending, fitting for an asshole such as King Knight. Anyways, I'm glad Johnny finally got this amazing "series" the Round 2 it deserved!
I wonder how long time fans felt about the drastic genre-shift, though. Then again, I suppose that's what it takes to reach 11 games. ... at least they didn't add a car ;)
While specter of torment is my favorite (Though combining health into your skills in new game+ can bite me), plague of shadows was actually a close second for me. I LOVED keeping the momentum going and finding fun and unique ways to get around some obstacles. I actually put down the float burst when it just killed the speed. Shovel of hope follows for being the start of it all, and the genderswap mode being a very welcome change of pace. King of cards is alright, but not for me. Showdown I completely forgot about.
It still amazing over the course of those years that Shovel Knight received great support and free DLC. It's truly a perfect example of why the indie market exploded the way it did.
I would not have like the other campaigns nearly as much as I did if they were just shovel knight but with slight changes. The fact that they are all so different, not just from shovel knight but from other side scrollers in general, is why I love these games so much. Plague knight’s utility was incredibly satisfying to master, specter knight was super easy to have a lot of fun with, and king knight, while I agree is the weakest for both story and gameplay, had some unique challenges that came from the limited control scheme.
I bought Shovel Knight Treasure Trove when the Switch had just come out (y'kno, I needed something to play aside from Zelda). It only had Shovel of Hope and Specter of Torment at the time and HUGE porps to Yacht Club Games for including Plague Knight and King Knight campaigns for FREE when they came out. That's some consumer friendly practices right there.
King of Cards is actually my fav of the four. Sucker it up to me gravely missing the Tetra Master from FF games or me sad Nintendo hasn't made a new Wario Land title. That and I love King Knight being a childish shithead.
plague knight is hard to get used to but once you do he's by far the most fun to control, speedruns of his campaign are really fun to watch too, you can just zoom through any stage if you know what you're doing

Anyway, King of Cards is easily my favorite expansion, and I love it so much. Good luck with the Dragon Quest marathon, Johnny! You’ll probably need it.
For whatever reason, Plague Knight's gameplay style absolutely clicked with me and is still my favorite campaign in the collection.
Yes....spamming bombs infinitely. Such skill.
@@frogglen6350 if that's your take away, you either didn't play at all or didn't spend enough time with it.
I wouldn't say something that takes practice just to get used to is the "best", but everyone has their opinions...
Something that nobody seems to mention is that all of this DLC is free if you got the very first version of shovel knight on steam. At least I got all of the expansions despite only paying 10 euros
As a Dragon Quest fan I'm patient. I have to be...
"I know all you dragon quest fans are saying I demand justice"
Me: Oh you mean Ted?
Who?

You don't actually get Plague of Shadows if you purchased Shovel Knight standalone and not on Treasure Trove, which is the collection. The only way to get Plague is to buy the collection for whatever damn reason
That's the case now, it wasn't the case when the game was getting regular updates.
@@coreyferreyra I am aware of this and can see why you replied, you are correct. But I still feel like its something important to acknowledge since he makes it sound like you get it anyway you buy the games.
Thank you.
6:34 actually, they decided on who was going to be playable thorugh a poll, where the backers got to vote for which character they wanted.
Yeah, that’s... what he said
Shovel of Hope was actually my least favorite of the 4, I found it to be the most basic and uninteresting in both gameplay and story.
SPOILER
Giga Cardia or Triumvirate?
@@trevoraven3293 Probably Triumvirate, Cardia was pretty fun IMO. I didn't find either of them to be very bad, although I think I remember Triumvirate having some kind of 1 shot attack halfway in.
I'm a little disappointed that genderswap mode is limited to Shovel of Hope. I actually want to play as the female versions of Plague, Specter and King Knight.
Ah 1am karaoke... the Yakuza is strong with your neighbors.
I love how this is over twice as long as his original Shovel Knight video
Goes to show how much the DLC added.
6:09 I just want to remind everyone that Cory Barlog (the director of God of War II and Dad of War) confirmed that Kratos' cameo in Shovel Knight is canon to the rest of the God of War series. So Johnny has already knocked off one game for his future God of War Marathon.
King Knight’s platforming was great for me! It was my second favorite, behind Specter Knight.
I loved how each campaign added to the next
16:39 - The world map in Shovel Knight is more of a reference to SMB3 than to SMW, dude.
I saw a lot of lets players and streamers struggle with that at first
i was terrible at it at first but i love plague knight’s controls, once you get the hang of them it’s super fun to zip around at high speed
As someone who moved into his first apartment last summer, I completely relate to the neighbor issue. The noise always seemed to happen right when I needed to be asleep, which sucked ass because I work 12 hour shifts. Fortunately the landlord finally kicked them out. At least that's my guess, all I know is that they're gone.
my order from least to best from 2 angles is as followed
-gameplay-
King of Cards - Plague of Shadows - Shovel of Hope - Specter of Torment
-story-
King of Cards - Shovel of Hope - Specter of Torment - Plague of Shadows
btw about King of Cards, F that final boss and its bottomless pit nonsence
and that Joustus secret boss is awsome
Just came here from an old video of yours and I just want to say congrats on the weight loss! Looking good mate!
Plague Knight best DLC, don't @ me. Although, I don't think I finished Spectre or did anything in KoC. I just love the movement, the burst is so clean.
20:17 that was physically uncomfortable to watch
That Metroid t-shirt is amazing.
This game's sprites are delightful.
One of the best deals ever that Yacht Club managed to stick to. 4 campaigns, 3 with unique level design all for $20. Can't wait to see what their next big project brings!
5:51 Wow I know that Americans don't use that word as the meaning that most of us know but damn it's weird hearing it used so casually
What? Spastic? What does it mean normally?
@@captainmega6310 It is a Derogatory term used against people with turrets and it is also used by some people to describe when someone is doing something stupid which is also like calling someone a "Retard" so that's why in other countries that word is considered offensive and a slur
@@prestonanderson1719 that's interesting, coming from a American
I thought King Knight's ending was rather sad, in a way x)
...I loved it all the same, though!
20:28 Johnny, you’re scaring the kids. :(
Probably the first person to ever actually do this, but thank you for guiding me to SurfShark
Man the platforming in dq 5 is really good
I wonder how long time fans felt about the drastic genre-shift, though.
To be clear: To this day, plague of shadows DOES NOT come with the standalone version of shovel of hope.
i just returned to play Shovel knight and i couldnt be happier with this video
10:18 + 11:48 That's it; Johnny, you now have to do a Johnny Versus Final Fantasy VI. You brought this on yourself.
I mean Considering the final fantasy marathon coming up it's only a matter of time
Personally, I loved Plague Knight's controls. King Knight was the awkward one for me, his dash jumping was just super janky and not very fun to use.
20:34 I still wonder where is this music from
The original Shovel Knight review was Six years ago? God I feel old
It still amazing over the course of those years that Shovel Knight received great support and free DLC.
It's truly a perfect example of why the indie market exploded the way it did.

In fucking deed
So do I.
Now I have something to watch while I eat my food. Thank johnny.
Forget the review , John. Where the fuck do you be getting your T-Shirts?! I want that samus one so badly. Please shoot me a link or something buddy
One guess - if I may throw my ten cents in - is likely The Yetee. But he likely has a broader range of sites he gets his tees from.

Tried looking up metroid shirts on there but they only had one and it wasn't his. Thx for input however
Johnny’s looking GOOD. Great work!
there should be another castlevania marathon, where johnny covers the portable castlevanias
I hope you do a round 2 on Tereria
The PS3/PS4 version can be had on the European PlayStation Store for just 25 EUR (about 30 USD, and sales tax is already included).
Unrelated to video I know, but...
Johnny vs. DKC trilogy?
Yes! I'm loving this Round 2 series!
King of Cards is a fun campaign for me. Plague Knight's my favorite, Specter's good on its own, and Shovel Knight's good and solid.
I've only played the original. I'm going to jump into the frozen pool and get Treasure Trove. Awesome video, as usual.
Johnny vs Terraria: Round 2!
I screamed out loud when I saw that clip of the dude jumping into the frozen pool, FUCK
"The Nintendo Switch Beta"
That made me laugh a lot
This is so weird. Yesterday I literally rewatched your shovel knight video and wondered if you would make a review of the dlc
Johnny out here dropping another banger

Nice Ocean Dub reference
0:50 I’m curious, does the VPN help people in other countries watch the Animaniacs 2020 reboot on Hulu?
Well if you get stack tv you can watch it but I don't know if that is available outside of the U.S or Canada
The VPN will! Just select a US server
1:58 yes, this is me. I am one of them. THERE ARE DOZENS OF US! *DOZENS!*

Best game of the decade *babee*
happy 10th anniversary shovel!(17:30 still laugh at the visual of king knight doing that & johnny bothered by his neighbors karaoke.)
while i prefer megaman 9 as a true example of a retro revival while it's own identity as a sequel going to its roots charm/view shantae as the actual face of indie games love the success shovel knight has gotten(especially the amiibo, assist trophy & first 4 figures celebration for it in figurines.:3) as i love plague knights relationship with mona & the comedy in king knight.(more games should for dlc do more side stories of other characters/bosses.)
I liked Spectre Knights gameplay more than any other in this bundle. Also, the f*cking trailer music for Spectre Of Torment! It still makes my hairs stand on edge!
