It’s literally impossible to watch a Kenny Beats video and not wanna go make beats immediately after
Fliko video*
Why is this so true😂
ruclips.net/video/oBfxJ67RQ_E/видео.html
haha so true, probably one of the most authentic man on youtube/twitch
i literally just opened ableton while watching this as i scrolled down and saw this comment
There needs to be a Kenny for “Alternative” musicians, for people in bands. He gives great advice, even for people outside of beat making.
100%
Hey, we don’t need a Kenny for people in bands. People in bands just gotta listen to Kenny.
@@EricLeCrennSanchez He can help yeah, but there are things he just doesn’t know, not coming from that world. Nothing against him for that though.
@@millennialanimal Maybe Mac DeMarco could start streaming? He was a touring artist with a band for a long time, and he has a sick studio to stream from. Y’know, if he wanted.
@@EricLeCrennSanchez Mac did that for a while, search “Cam Tony” I think they’re still up on RUclips.
i’m glad kenny gave us this lesson instead of breaking down the architecture of his studio
Having a comfortable space is essential for creativity. If you have the room and can make it sound good with reflection treatment it really does help. It doesn’t have to be a million dollar room. Learning to mix should just be part of your production skill set.
Kenny should make a list of equipment needed for a home studio
Dude use google?
nah he should make a list of all of his equipment
Literally just a laptop and headphones is all you need to make great music. The rest just makes the experience easier
he just did
for anyone wondering classic cheap vocal line would be something like 1073 preamp clone + 2a or 3a or tubetech (CL1B ) clones + apogee duet (or motu m2 if broke) and then 2-3 classic mics (nta-1, sm7b and tlm-100 series).
$3-4k is a little off, at least now. A tube tech CL 1B or a LA-2A is $3-4k alone. A neve or avalon preamp will be between $1-4k. Minimum you’re around $4k, max around $8k, and that’s not even factoring in a mic. Kenny said he has a TLM, i’m going to assume it’s a 103, which is another $1k. Not trying to make it sound impossible, I think it’s great advice and i’m an engineer, I just want to make sure people have the right info going into it
Thanks man 🙏🏿👊🏿
what would you recommend prioritizing
@@youngsuit
First of all I didn’t expect to write this long of an answer, so to sum it up I say preamp, mic, compressor depending on your current setup. All of this is opinion based though, so if you’re curious as to my reasoning keep reading.
None of those things alone are going to drastically change your sound. They’ll all hopefully make it sound better, but no one of them alone is going to take you from 0-100. A good preamp will probably do the most for you at the start, depending on your mic. I would probably go for the mic after that, and the compressor (Tube Tech or LA-2A) last. I think it’s really important to understand while there is a very cool sound to analog, it comes with issues that a lot of people have no experience dealing with in the digital world, especially with vintage gear like those compressors. You have to maintain them, if something needs to be replaced it’s impossible to find and very expensive, unlike a plug-in you can only use them on 1 track at a time, and much more. Sometimes for the sound it’s worth all of that work. But see if you can try them out first, or buy a cheap analog compressor like a DBX160 or a VLA2 and just mess around with them for a while. Change out the tubes, get to know how they work, etc. and then decide if it’s worth the $3k+ investment for you. Kenny’s right, a lot of studios will run most hip hop vocals through that exact chain, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only way. There are plenty of engineers who don’t like compressing a vocal before it hits the computer/console, and therefore would never buy one of those compressors to do what Kenny is saying.
Moral of the story is, Kenny is giving out great advice, and it’s all true, but that doesn’t mean it’s how you should do it. This is music, everything is subjective. Just do what sounds good for your situation
@@RokSivante Just as good is definitely arguable. Slate mic is a fantastic emulation, but it’s never going to be a 103 or a U87. Haven’t used Slates emulation plugins but I have used UAD’s, which are just as good if not better, and it’s the same situation. Amazing emulations, but will never sound the same as analog. Any engineer will argue that plugins don’t sound the same. They can sound just as good, but they don’t sound the same, if that makes any sense. Analog has an indescribable sound to it that has yet to be replicated exactly digitally.
Kenny is talking about sounding good, and with the stuff you just listed you definitely will sound good. But he’s also talking about sounding the same as the studio, and you’ll definitely have some inconsistencies there.
Having run a studio, I’d argue the look is almost as important as the sound too. Seeing a mic and an interface hooked up to a computer is different than seeing a mic and 3-4 pieces of gear hooked up to a computer. The same way a lot of artists would choose the studio with a console over the one without a console if they were the same price. Small artists want to take pictures and bring their friends with them, so the closer the place looks to Patchwerk for a fraction of the price, the more clients you’ll get.
Do you have any recommendations for preamps?
yess , I saw this video at the right time
Im glad I have my own studio. I have fun with it and upload songs that I want to listen to! Love the stream Kenny!

OK guys, let met give my perspective here as somebody who both practiced every week in a room with 250K of gear and did some demos with a Roland hand-held recorder : he never said to start with buying a U87 and a Tube tech. It's kinda sad this is the only take-away that a lot of people seem to get from this video. Music production is, quite simply, a *service-based business*. Passed a certain level, people are not gonna pay you the rates you need to make this a proper full-time job if you don't offer them access to better equipment than what they have at home...! Some artists like Charlie Puth and Jacob Collier recorded entire albums and actual hits with like an SM58, and that's great. You can work for yourself with whatever you want at whatever level! But if you charge people some pretty pennies, you can't just throw a Scarlett solo on top of a table and call it a "studio".
No studio but I got a 'Studio Apartment', who wants to pull up?
Lmao nice one
😂
The problem is NOBODY actually wants to take the time to get to where they want to be. They want the best of everything. That is not going to make you sound "professional" or "more unique". That's all bullshit. Make music and be you. Start from complete scratch and stop trying to impress everybody. Be your damned self...SBN RESONATE
Yes. Listen to T-Pain rant that there are enough Lil Babies. It's funny and on his RUclips channel.
Legend! Such good advice for free. I'm from an era when producers/engineers kept everything so tight and never told anyone ish about their setup. 👏🏾
Kenny stay dropping gems
Some of the prices are way off, but he’s right overall.. a CL1B alone is 3k, that TLM 49 is $1500 and an Avalon is around $2200.. of course you can find some of this stuff used.. but yea..
Yeah, and Cl-1b is based on the La-2a, is it not? Avalon, Manley Voxbox & Vari-Mu and 1176 get a lot of love too...but hey, the sentiment is great. Jump in and get some recording done. Life is short

That's more of an Engineers role but a Producer can wear the Engineers hat. There's a big difference between getting placements vs producing a record in the studio. Placements is when you just send beats out without having any input or direction on the final output of a finished song which makes you just a beat Maker. A real Producer is does more than make the beat but cuts the vocals in the studio with the Artist. They produce the record that sees the whole vision of a song from beginning to end.
You smarter than Kenny huh
@@maxharmonnn That's not the point. There is a difference. You don't call producing a song a placement. Like what are you placing? Licensing your music and getting placed in Film, TV's or sending off beats is what you call a placement.
I totally agree with you mane. ✊🏽

Great video but understand you can have the studio but it’s all how you use it and who you bring to it. Millions dollars worth of Game, one video at a Time
Ehhh, I would say closer to 60% of studios have that set up. The top notch studios have a good mix of gear and plugins. Most hip-hop mixes you hear today are generic but there’s definitely a difference between that and a professionally mixed song
Kenny is the Sam Hyde of music production
Really loved that talk, but simply no a tube tech or an LA2A and a neumann mic with a Neve 1073 Pre is no where near that budget. Bet you can’t find a tube tech cl1b stand alone for less than 4k pounds, All that setup is no less than 10 grand, So love the energy but yeah the figures are not accurate. Plus learning ofcourse doesn’t take 10 years but you gotta put in the work more than a lil youtube.

even the room in studios, most of them are for live bands so they just put up that big ass wall to dampen the sound to record vocals, in a small studio you wont need all those big walls cause the room is already small enough that treating it wont cost alot aswell, i recorded for myself friends and artist in a garage that was filled with boxed of papers and furniture that was unused, and the vocals sounded clean af, mediocre gear and not that expensive aswell

I understand getting a pre-amp but what if you have something like an Apollo Twin doesn’t that basically cover the pre-amp for you?
It depends every interface (even 50$ ones) have a pre-amp in it just the quality varies. The Apollo got a very decent pre-amp, but never underestimate the power of analog gear that is just build for that one cause its made! Dont mind my english
Apollo's if I am not mistaken have good preamps. It definitely covers the pre amp technically.MOst interface nowadays are built with decent to good preamps.Check out the new motus and SSD consumer level interfaces.
having a deadicated preamp makes the audio sound better.
Can come one please clarify the gear he's talking about

“All you need is a 1073..tube tech..and nice microphone (u87)”...this is like almost $10k Lmfaoo...before the monitors, computer, interface, headphones, mic stand, cables, power conditioner, pro tools, plug-ins, and learning how to record and mix...and hopefully the room is already treated for recording...lord these people RUclips videos be so funny
If you listened he told you what he first bought
I mean, of course you're not gonna start by buying a ton of analog gear or a nice mic. You will definitely need to start small with a shitty mic on whatever you can afford.
If you're starting from zero, that piece of advice is clearly not for you. If you're ready to get serious about your sound, a good mic and preamp is a must.
That's so not the message you really couldn't have missed it more... people like Jacob Collier started with an SM58 and nothing else. I personally went to a studio outfitted with about 250K of gear that I could use freely with my band, but we didn't. It wasn't our space, and it felt intimidating and we didn't had enough time - we probably should've used it all, but hey, that's just it felt for me, and the band leader is a pro producer with some seriously amazing skills. Now I have my own studio space where I can call people and be confortable in it. It's not a beautiful looking room or anything and I rent it but it's such an awesome feeling :) Can't wait to do things like he did. About the microphone and pre-amp : at a certain level, not owning a proper mic and pre-amp is ridiculous. He never, ever said to start with a U87 and a tube tech.
you don't need pro tools, people need to learn pro tools is just industry standard, you can do the same shit on other DAWs
Or Great RIver, and a Mojave ma300 and some decent speakers cost $4000
good points Kenny, What about good convertors?
Bro a new tube tech is about 3.5k talking about getting away for 3 or 4k
The same company makes a plug in version of tube tech for like $300 bro it’s the same shit
Yeah but it doesn’t sound as good. Why do you thinks studios still she the physical peices. Also the 3-4K he’s talking about is how much he paid for the gear he uses in the cave. He uses an Avalon channel strip which is about 4K
@@callummacdonald9610 I disagree with the quality; owning physical equipment when digital versions are available comes down to purism and preference. Nothing wrong with that, but 40 (drakes exec producer)is arguably one of the best producers currently alive and uses 100% digital recording system, bc when using analog equipment at some point it has to be converted to a digital signal and can lose fidelity, instead of using digital the whole way through and having 100% manipulation over the sound. It’s like physical synths, they’re nice to have, but do the same thing as the plug in.
