Mick, you need to appreciate Iowa’s defense. Their defense has vastly improved over last season. Their hands and feet are extremely active. Once their 3’s start dropping, look out. Because, they are so active moving without the ball. Fun to watch.
This team has a chance to do very well. They have decent speed, they can score on 3 levels, they have good size; and are playing effective D. There is a certain toughness and grit to this team we haven't really seen over the past 5 years. I think they're a sweet-16 level squad by the end of the year. They have another good recruiting class coming in next year, led by Addie Deal. So Iowa isn't fading away.
I haven't watched the game, but they must have gotten O'Grady to stop bringing the ball down and getting it stolen. She seems to be a decent player, but I have my doubts she will still be a starter at the end of the season. ETA: Just watched the highlights. Huge improvement in O'Grady. She kept the ball high so it couldn't be easily stolen and her footwork was fantastic. Now she needs to work on her defense.
ESPN had VA Tech as a 75% favorite to win. This Iowa team is not as explosive on offense so far this season, it’s more balanced. The defense however is much better. They should be top 25 in next ranking they were like 26-27th in preseason ranks and a bunch of teams at bottom have lost already.
Oh, the same ESPN that didn’t rank Iowa as a top 25 team? To be fair, VA Tech isn’t ranked either and I understand Iowa is #26 or something but that seems like a miscalculation when you look at some of the other top ranked teams.
As a Iowa fan I don't think they should be ranked they bet a Virginia Tech team that's pretty much in rebuild mode and doesn't even know who they are yet lets not get carried away here 😂😂
@@countyboy3988 Iowa is in the same mode, they will be ranked 25 in next poll though as I said they were 26th and 27th in 2 preseason polls and 2 teams between 20-25 lost. ESPN also had VA Tech as a 75% favorite to win and if you look at their game to game predictions has Iowa winning like 4 Big Ten games which is ridiculous.
Losing seniors is a big deal because of the team chemistry and cohesion they've built over four years. That’s why I believe women’s college basketball stands out compared to men’s. The "one-and-done" rule in men’s basketball doesn’t allow players the time to truly gel as a team. You’re right-losing someone like Kate Martin or Gabby Marshall individually might not seem as impactful, but losing Caitlin Clark, Gabby Marshall, and Kate Martin together is a huge blow to the team, but they certainly should be ranked 15-20
I loved how Addi played. She never really got enough live from CC, but with her footwork and positioning, she can be a force with Hannah. She actually has a nice little jump shot I'd like to see more of
the Hokies the past few seasons have been really good they were a top seed the year before and 3 or 4 seed last ncaa. espn had IOWA a huge underdog vs VT
I think this was a statement win. You could tell Jan Jensen instantly moved on to VTEC in the NIU aftergame locker-room talk. This was the "We deserve to be ranked win."
I was impressed with how deep Iowa's bench is. The challenge for Coach Jan will be coming up with productive rotations. But Hannah looks very good despite missing numerous bunnies. Afolter will get healthy. Stremloh is a gamer (wish we could combine her and McCabe). And even O'Grady is more than serviceable. And I'm leaving numerous players out. Plus, next year looks VERY promising. Go, Hawks.
I think part of the reason why the assists were only 15 is because shots just weren’t falling. Those numbers should increase when they get more used to playing with one another. Thanks for covering the Hawkeyes. I hope they get some credit and get ranked soon, but OK with going under the radar. Probably not a Final Four team, but not ruling it out if we are able to catch a top team on an off night!
Iowa's defense is better this season. Not as good from 3 of course, but a well balanced offense. Still, their bench is very weak and they're not gonna do well vs top teams in the thick of the season. They're not gonna do well on the interior with their lack of size and spacing. I think unranked is fair for now.
Heiden (5) and Mallegni(3) will provide a strong front bench. Especially, If Stuelke can play 30+ minutes. Plus Macabe and Stremlo give them solid backups at point and shooting guards. IMO, they are a solid 9 deep. I need to look back at their roster, because I thought they were ten deep after watching the NIS game. Ya, the back up to Stuelke is AJ Ediger. I don’t know why she didn’t play today. IMO they are two deep across the board. Heiden and O’Grady are long and strong centers. O’Grady seems much improved this season. And Heiden is going to improve quickly. I think she was ranked as the #5 freshman big.
@@davidspriggs5024 I've never seen AJ being played as the back up 4. Just not quick/mobile enough. She's 3rd on the depth chart at post. It looks like Coach J is seeing Mallegni as the backup to Stuelke, as well as an occasional 3. But when Syd is back as a starter at the 3, she'll be replaced more often by Kylie, unless Kylie is getting the start at 2. Either way, doesn't look like AJ is going to get a lot of minutes.
They actually have better size this year than last. If O'Grady can continue to play like this, with a solid frosh in Heiden, then Stuelke can play a legit 4. Also, they are are going to be a very good 3-point shooting team, with McCabe, Feuerbach, and Mallegni. And their bench is already looking pretty strong, with all of the freshmen making serious contributions. And we have a 4-star freshman PG (Aaliyah Guyton) waiting to come back from ACL, probably in December.
@ thanks, I hadn’t seen the depth chart. But, clearly MALLEGNI was playing more as a 4 today than she did last week. She’s super talented, but didn’t show much today. It’s going to be interesting to watch as these freshmen gain experience.
Really? Because commentators all last year and this year pronounce it 'fearbach'. I don't know about ESPN and the like but English TV companies have pronunciation departments and they do the research and then inform the 'talent'.
Olsen is very good. She isn't as explosive as CC. Both her and CC are great at going to the basket. I notice Olsen using the mid range and the post more than CC and she goes underhand for layups while CC goes overhand with her layups
Iowa's defense was great ,but need to work on their finishing ,olsen is a bucket and kylie f did not have the best game offensively but defensively sound.
Iowa coach used this game for practice after Taylor and Heiden didn't return. Warming up Afolter, Jensen is the 5 coach specialist she went to work inside. She had shooters on standby. O'Grady was physically on the floor to much early battling and Heiden went in and helped correct that problem. Jensen excellent looking ahead working it out in real time wa lah O'grady and Hannah with real numbers.
Yes Mick .. watched this, and Iowa's first .. it seems like ever better things will happen, for them. O'Grady .. like the no-dribble approach of hers, when she gets the ball .. not giving anyone time to defend her shooting/laying up. Olsen .. she wasn't always bringing up the ball, from the backcourt .. but, how much does that matter? I suppose it might, if she & Stuelke start getting a rhythm. Wow, .. Stuelke can turn on the jets, .. so maybe this will be another transition for points team.
I think Hannah needs to slow down. And she doesn’t need to take every shot she attempts all the way to the basket. She should stop short and shot a two or three foot shot
Their defense is unreal, Kylie Feuerbach should be in the WNBA as she can play defense like Lexie Hull. Lucy Olsen needs to replace Kelsey Mitchell in that backcourt and we can add Allison O'Grady at center.
Not sure why teams are fronting O'Grady in the post and thus allow the lob entry. She's not that much of a threat if you play behind her. Also notable is that Lucy Olsen wants to always finish with her inside hand on the left side. Once scouted better things will be much harder on offense, but they are better defensively and block out very well.
VA Tech lost there 2 best players, as they went to Kentucky with Coach Kenny Brooks. Kentucky might be a Final 4 team. VA Tech is mostly new players and new coach.

They have a lot of improving to do for sure but all the pieces are there for a great season. They are for sure trying some of those lob type passes into the paint. Taylor needs to be more sure of herself and pass early on transition. Defense was sure better all around and really good young talent. Very interesting. I feel like someone needs to step up to be vocal leader when something needs corrected or celebrated. I think Hana has lost a few pounds and looks in shape
Iowa will lose double digits this year. Virginia Tech has a basically new team and new coaching staff. They will not sniff a Final 4 or a Sweet 16. Will exit the first weekend of the tournament. And I am a fan of Iowa. They are scrappy just not a good scoring team. V-Tech is picked to be 12 in the ACC. ACC is top heavy this year.
