Oh absolutely. My VERY 1st experience with 3D prints actually with my buddies about 7 or 8 years ago. He had a 3D printer and printed me a template that had the shape of an actual butterfly for me to use for template routing butterfly/bowtie inlays. Was awesome! My best print for the home shop was PVC pipe connectors. Did not need them for liquids, just to build a frame. The local store was 3.50 each and I needed about 2 dozen. Instead I 3D printed " X " type where the pipe slides over for roughly 0.08 each.
Just for information you can get PVC filament, although I would not recommend it. It produces nasty fumes when melted and apparently isn’t great to work with. It may be useful though if you absolutely need PVC, maybe for water pipes or if you need to use some kind of PVC glue on your pipes.
@@conorstewart2214 Thank you for the suggestion and warning. Thankfully I did not need the pipe connectors to hold or transport water though. I havent tried it personally but it's funny you bring up because I JUST had an instance where my featherboard couldnt retract far enough for the width of the board I was using so I may need to print one that can. I also have a large resin printer. I see no reason why it wouldnt work. If you can use "Tough-Resin" or "ABS-Like Resin" it would be great. Basic resin can be a bit brittle.
Thats what I believe. My 1st printer was an Ender 3. It can produce an awesome print, it may take awhile for it to print AND you will spend A LOT of time dialing it in and maintaining it but it is fairly inexpensive. OR you can spend 600-700 USD and get a Bambu Lab P1S that you just hit "print" and 98% of the time it spits out a perfect print. I agree with you on every point, I would just add, manage your expectations. Environment affects 3D printing, my settings for printing are different in summer than they are in winter because the works space I use. So for the 3D printing newbie, just be patient, try a few things and don’t give up, once you figure out your printer setting that fits your environment you are golden. Awesome video, I was a finish carpenter for a few years and made tons of gigs in wood. A 3D printer would have saved years :)
Heck yeah!! I once did that with an ender 3. Good thing about it was the printer was never really quite right the 1st go around so I took more time and did a bit more research the 2nd time putting it together. Guess it helps if the "new car" smell is gone. Out of curiousity was there something particular you want to print??
Nice! Yeah. Something I didnt really get into and I probably should have is the amount of time you free up by having a 3d printer work on those things instead of you. Like it really can free up time to do other stuff.
Are you like me? You have a list of tools you want/need and are slowly chipping away at that list from most needed on down? 3D printer is definitely on that list, and after watching your video it just bumped up a few spots. Nice video. Keep ‘‘em coming👍😎

Ahh he's not so bad once you get use to him. I wouldn't let him around your miter saw though unless you want a bunch of little baby miter saws popping up around the shop.
One tip which might or might not help. Tho amazing tools a 3D printer is best not put inside your workshop. All the dust is going to give you a lot of problems! Best to put it somewhere inside where it's hopefully in a pretty decent environment controlled room away from a lot of drafts.
@@boomerangfreak Great point! Drafts are terrible for these open air type printers. I keep mine in my studio and have actually recently put them in a tent to allow for better fume extraction and insulation for the printer. Again. Thank you so much for sharing. This was a great point.
@@JasonGrissom @boomerangfreak Good points all around. I do like the idea of a 3D printer in the studio rather than the shop. I've got an outside wall, so presumably fume extraction will be easy enough.
@@WorkshopGreg yeah. Everyone should feel free to prioritize safety as they see fit. Personally in my VOC testing, the VOCs generated while running 2 3D printers for ~6 hours in an enclosed studio VS 24 hours of no printing and after venting the room for 2 hours was within margin of error. BUT I decided to go with the tent and a 8 inch inline duct fan that exhaust out of the studio because of my resin printer. More specifically the isopropyl alcohol I use to clean prints. The VOCs were off the charts and seeing how my toddler spends time out there with me sometimes it became a MUST for me. But again. I encourage everyone to do their own research and come to thier own decisions. Happy to hear that you are keeping it in your mind though. (Plus ABS and Nylon are stinky). 😂
Guess my channel and plastic have more in common than I thought. 🤣 More seriously. Thank you for sharing. Completely agree. I try my best to reuse and up cycle when I can to limit the impact I have on the environment. Unfortunately I do love making useful parts around the shop/house. Unfortunately even with my CNC it just isnt able to deliver the results I desire for certain things. Also. I planted my walnut scraps a year ago and I still don't have a walnut tree. 😮💨 Am I doing something wrong?
@@JasonGrissom however did we manage to do this work all these centuries without plastic…? On a cost per bd ft basis I can’t see how custom plastic printing is cheaper than wood. I think a Better choice is aluminum in the CNC. Actually recyclable. Plastic recycling in the US is basically a myth. The solution to all those wall storage ideas is…drawers.
@@f.kieranfinney457 oh man. This could be a video in itself. I'm not exactly sure what the cost per board foot breakdown would be as lumber prices are kind of all over the place right now. As far as using the CNC to make parts, you are correct. Aluminum is a much better material for recycling. However, a CNC being a subtractive manufacturing machine means a lot of material would be "wasted". Unless a really good mechanism for capturing all the chips and sending those to recycling is implemented. With 3D printing...if the model is made correctly the 1st time it should last for a very long time. Hopefully limiting the impact to the environment. I truly do appreciate the intellectual conversation. Lots to think about.
@@JasonGrissom it’s pretty simple to catch the chips. All big companies do it and send it to recycling by the pound. I have 3D printed hose adapters in my shop. They’re junk but there’s currently no alternative. Shop strength requires nylon reinforcement, IMO, which I think takes a more expensive printer and material. Printed plastics aren’t accurate and strong enough for jigs and are wasteful for most things. But if you already have one for other purposes it makes sense to use it. Be interesting to see how long it takes to design from scratch and print, then use test for durability vs wood. I’d find it interesting. But probably just me! Enjoy your channel.

I'm a hobby carpenter, and as printers are more expensive in Brazil, I thought about setting one up. but they convinced me to buy a ready-made one, as it would be my first printer. I bought a Creality Ender 3 S1 Plus five months ago, as it was available within the options, I didn't know about Kobra. I only print in PLA. I had difficulties with the ABS, I didn't know that a closed printer would be better...
There is PLA filament that has real wood fibers, like walnut, bamboo, ebony. You can sand it and stain it.
Great point Felix! I have seen these but havent had a chance to try them. Prints I've seen with them look awesome though! As soon as I get a hardened nozzle I'm going to give em a go!
Great video Jason your making me think again about a 3D printer it’s an itch that might just need a good scratching
🎶please tell us Steve, please tell us Steve, have you been wastin' all your dough?🎶
@@JasonGrissom Haha not yet but I might be !!!!
@@SteveBellCreates 😂 well I did add a pinned comment but if you start to seriously look at them just know that Anycubic is launching the Kobra 2 Pro which is the same printer that I like but they've added a couple creature comforts and it is running Klipper now so it runs faster and blah blah blah. But I also know Pierre really enjoys his Bambu Labs P1P. But that is double the price. 🤷♂️
@@JasonGrissom oh just go and confuse on old man more why don’t you ! A 3D printer is on the cards before Christmas
@@SteveBellCreates 🤣 sorry Steve! It can be like that when looking at 3D printers. Good thing is its a pretty well covered topic on RUclips. Plus you always got the Sweet Swedish Maker to help you out if you need it. 😁
At around 5:00 u8nder tools you mentioned that you made some table saw inserts for your Delta Unisaw. Where can I find these and do you have the files so they can be altered slightly? Been watching a lot of other videos and want to try and incorporate some dust collection ideas. Thanks and nice production.
I havent uploaded the file anywhere but I've had a couple reach out to me. If you want to send me a DM using the email on my channel page I can send em to you.
@@JasonGrissom I'm not sure if this is going to you as a DM or as a reply to the comments so this is a test. Old man here and not as computer savvy as I used to be :) I don't see an email address to use.
Did you release the dowel centering jig?
I did not as it was just a real "rough and ready" kind of solution. If I get some time i'll try and get it posted though. I have several print designs I just need to throw up on printables.
👍
Just found you and followed.
First time seeing one of your videos. Bro....epic beard!
Thanks! Gotta try and make up for my lack of skills and knowledge somehow. 🤷♂️ 🤣
Great video!!! Will your printer still print in monochrome if you run out of yellow, magenta, or cyan?
As long as it doesn't get a paper jam it should be fine.
Great ideas. Make a new video when you have more 3D printed stuff to share. I'm in the process of designing / 3D printing holders for all my stuff. I got a couple videos on my Shorts if you're interested.
Another great video my dude! Now you got me thinking about swapping out my 3D printer
What printer do you have?
@@JasonGrissom i got a creality ender 3 v1 i think
@@DaJugnaut I mean the Ender is STILL a good printer. I'm not sure about the v1 but I kmow there are a bunch of mods you can buy to upgrade it. I saw Creality themselves have started to sell upgrade kits so those are probably pretty trustworthy. Maybe something to check out. There on Amazon.
Please please please tell me where the files are for the pirate with the tentacles!!! thanks. :)
Isn't it so cool!!? I got it from Cults3D, it is a bit pricey but the model is REALLY HIGH quality. Heres the link cults3d.com/en/3d-model/art/pirate-octopus enjoy!
Thank you @@JasonGrissom I saw it there and wanted to confirm before buying it because of the high price. Sometimes people re-sell other people's designs. But I can't find this anywhere else. Cheers.
I have absolutely no use for a 3d printer…at least I didn’t think so until I watched this video! ***Adds to Amazon cart***
🤣 yeah. it be like that.
Nice viddy. One question - these files you speak of, are they free? You don’t really make it clear in the video 🙃
🤣 All free. Free free free! You get a file and YOU get a file! And you! And you!
Love it! Now I have to go get my 3D printer out of a moving box and try to remember how to put the thing back together. 😂
Heck yeah!! I once did that with an ender 3. Good thing about it was the printer was never really quite right the 1st go around so I took more time and did a bit more research the 2nd time putting it together. Guess it helps if the "new car" smell is gone. Out of curiousity was there something particular you want to print??
All the organization! My shop is a massive disaster and I need to get it together. Specifically the wall organizer and sander paper organizer.
Nice! Yeah. Something I didnt really get into and I probably should have is the amount of time you free up by having a 3d printer work on those things instead of you. Like it really can free up time to do other stuff.
Absolutely! Plus you can print some awesome toys. 😂
@@fiveduckstudio For sure! Be sure to keep the safe filter on though when searching "3D printed Toys".
Are you like me? You have a list of tools you want/need and are slowly chipping away at that list from most needed on down? 3D printer is definitely on that list, and after watching your video it just bumped up a few spots. Nice video. Keep ‘‘em coming👍😎
Whoa! New logo!!? Thanks for stopping by dude! Yeah I think im pretty set on tools for now. 😂 I've had a resin 3d printer for awhile but it just wasn't blowing me away when it came to more "ridgid" prints and it the barrier to entry was a little much for my wife so I got an FDM printer and now we're HOOKED! I couldn't recommend getting one enough. Super fun for the whole household.
Thanks for noticing the new logo. I had wanted a new one for so long but couldn't come up with an idea. Then it just hit me and boom, here we are. I even made a shirt that I'll wear in my next video.@@JasonGrissom
@@DudeSawdust yeah man! It looks sweet! I'll be watching for it in the next video!
Awesome video but that Lee dude seems shady 🤨
Ahh he's not so bad once you get use to him. I wouldn't let him around your miter saw though unless you want a bunch of little baby miter saws popping up around the shop.
@@JasonGrissom😂😂😂😂😂
"The more you spend, the less likely you are to have problems".....lulzbot disagrees lol
Hey theres always exceptions to the rules right?? 😂
Damn it. Now I need to buy a 3D printer for my already crowded workshop.
Well thankfully they don't take up TOO much space. Just set it on your tablesaw. You won't be needing that anymore. 🤣
if I can figure out how to use a 3D printer... ANYONE CAN!
Ah. Don't sell yourself short Eric. You'll figure it out eventually. 🤣🤣🤣
😎⚒️😎⚒️😎
I'm so tired of epoxy river tables 😭 is the demand for them that strong from the rich yuppie community?
Not sure who is buying them. 😂 it'll eventually fizzle out. 🤞
Plastic is horrible for the environment.
Get a CNC and stick with wood. It grows back.
Guess my channel and plastic have more in common than I thought. 🤣
More seriously.
