    Another point that rarely get mentioned with the Meyer lens's is the incredible color pop . I am always amazed at how insignificant the multi coating is when shooting with these old single coated Meyer optics.

    I got the Pantacon and the Super Takumar radioactive, I use both a lot, I also have the Vivitar you mentioned
    It is a great experience to use these lenses on my Fujifilm X-T2... like merging past and present in a single image

    I have the Pentax 1.8 and the Helios which I alternatively use on my Zenith EM.
    The 50mm 3.5 nyadakap is on its way from here in the uk on a Zenit 3 body so M39.
    I have a Helios m42 135 mm 2.8 lens which says made in Japan on it and its date is 1981 as it is numbered in the Soviet system where the first two digits of the serial number are the year of manufacture. I bought this lens in the UK from the now defunct Technical and Optical Equipment company who were based in London at the time.
    It has a built in slide up lenshood and is very sharp with a lovely bokeh

  • @Alter0X
    @Alter0X 7 лет назад

    I own a few of those and can definitely say they are awesome. Helios is fun to play with, the Industar is hilariously small and lightweight, the Takumar is great all around. I own the medium format Mamiya Sekor 80mm 1.9 and I love it, colors are awesome, if the full frame ones are up to that quality they are probably as awesome as you say :D

  • @bekanav
    @bekanav 5 лет назад +2

    Not only Helios has that swirly bokeh but quite high resolution in the middle. I own pentacon 1.8 as well and I didn't notice anything interesting in it, also cheaply built 50/2.2 yashinon is what it is. But Fuji's own 55/1.8 is really good one, both mechanically and optically

    I've been fuck arsing around with old (and new) manual lenses for about 6 years so far and came to the conclusion that a) they are a total pain in the hole on an SLR and 2) a total delight to use on my Fuji X-M1, infact I ONLY use MF lenses on it now.
    My favourites so far (I have a lot): Jupiter 8, Zeiss Jena Sonnar 135 3.5, Takumar 50 F1.4 (and 55 F1.8) Porst 55 F1.2, Helios 44 (the older one) Voigtlander Color Skopar 21 F4 ...but the one that sits on my Fuji pretty much all of the time is my Leitz Summaron 35mm 3.5, it is gorrrrrgeous. I've scoured car-boot sales, fleamarkets, charity shops, e-bay and there is pretty much nothing on my 'wish list' now.
    Thanks for your inspiration. Thumbs up.

  • @josephgarese5953

    Thumbs up for this video. I'm assuming these lens recommendations are for a cropped sensor Fuji, like the XT2 or the XPro2...
    But how would these translate into a GFX system? Some would vignette too much, but perhaps the image circle of others would be just large enough for a 33x44 sensor, meaning no -or at least slight, i.e. workable- vignette? Ken or anyone else, any input?

    The Zeiss 35mm f/2 for Canon/Nikon has a Moniker of "DISTAGON", however, Zeiss (ZM) 35/2 for Rangefinder Leica is called "BIOGON". . . Why ? . . . must be a different design because of different flange distance !
    now the twist in the tail / tale, . . the Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 is known as 'Distagon' for both i.e. same title for Dslrs as well as Leica

Do you know if that's a radioactive lens? I think I saw mentioned on a forum that the f1.4 was. Thanks in advance...

    I have found that the jenna 135 4 comes in two versions:
    1. A newer one (like the one you show) with clicking aperture settings and larger girth.
    2. The older one that is more slender and has ckickless aperature settings.
    I plan to use this for video, so maybe the older one makes more sense?... But I wanted to see if you know if the bokeh is as beautiful as the newer version
    Thanks!

    Which 28mm lens (40mm) has the most smooth manual focus for Fuji?

      I have a sears 28 2.8 that is probably made by someone like yashinon that is super smooth focusing. One of the best focus feel of any lens I have . It has incredible bubbly bokeh. I don't recall it. being an amazing performer in all areas, they are cheap and fun though. See flickr for examples. The little Voigtlander 28mm that ken has reviewed before is super smooth and well built and incredibly sharp. Bokeh is very nice and it focuses close. Love that lens. Focuses like complete crap, but the Pentacon 29mm 2.8 is one of my favorite vintage lenses. Amazing bokeh, focuses close and good color. Shoots pretty much like the pentacon 55 he talks about here.

      Both of those were produced for many years and on more than one factory. The main difference is that the M model had a "jumping" diaphragm that would automatically get closed before shooting. The ones without an M had to be closed manually.

      You can't ...it's in the composition of the glass. Live with it, it would only be hazardous if you were to bring the back of the (removed) lens right up to your eye and peer through it several times a day for a few weeks, in which case you might get a cataract. Or if you remove the thoriated elements, grind them to a fine dust and snort the powder.

    I wonder if you or someone else here could help me with a technical issue? I recently acquired an M42 screw mount Auto Chinon 135mm F2.8 lens, and multiple sources online quote this lens as having a 52mm filter diameter. Based on this I purchased a 52mm UV filter that I intended to leave in place on the lens, it didn't come with a front lens cap but is in beautiful condition otherwise, only to find this information was incorrect and the filter is way too small!! Does anyone know the correct size filter I should be buying for this lens, because all my search results are coming up with 52mm, which is puzzling to say the least...

  • @calizess

    The rear element of that radioactive lens is made of glass with a little of Uranium salt. Sometimes that rear element has yellowish tone, can be seen if you look at the White paper. This is Iodine, result of decay. Can be eliminated if the lens is left a day under sunshine. UV makes Iodine to decay further. While the radiation is hardly measurable and gets absorbed in the camera body, the customs services of many countries impound these lenses with great pleasure. So make sure the lens in in country, otherwise there is a risk to lose money.

I've been trying to give it multiple chances, but the contrast seems very bleh, and I'm not able to get that swirly bokeh as often as I'd like. Which Helios 58/2 are you referring to exactly? 44, 44-2, -3, -4, -5, -6, -7?
    They were made by three different factories and all have different construction - 6 or 8 aperture blades (or even 13 in the early M39 version), some with aperture ring, some without it.
    PS. I'm from Ukraine, LOL. And $42 for Helios is craaaazy expensive (they are typically $15-20 locally)

      In my experience (I have a number of versions) the 44 is the best one. It has the Kraznogorsk prism symbol on the front bezel of the lens surrounded by the following writing: "HELIOS-44 2/58 Nxxxxxx" (the last bit being the serial number, the last two digits representing the year of manufacture). I have had no problem with e-bay purchases from Ukraine, then again I am UK based.

      You're wrong about Ukraine, there are some excellent dealers who are also highly knowledgeable lens and camera repairers. Of course, you have to do some research to find the reliable people. Disadvantage is, they're not dirt cheap...because they're not selling dirt!

      BluesShuffle Or buy Helios 44-4 which is clone of Biotar.240 dollars than it must be in super good shaape sinc most of them are ~160.I would recommend 35 f2.4 flektagon over any Biotar.Most of flektagons also do jot have issue with the MF ring grease.If you have lens spanner and two brain cells you can take a part any lens from that period.

      Theoria Apophasis Too much, they are running about 100 euro in decent shape here in Europe....and not sure what means restored since there is nothing difficult to restore, lens spanner and remove front ring and cover en jpyou looking to helicol. Zippo naphta is doing fine to get rid of the old wax from helicol hehehehe.I also see that Flektagon 35 and especially 20 f2.8 are also expensive ....but hey they are also superior build even compared to Leica. Most of the copy's as well 135mm does not need any revision, focus ring is smooth and dempenend at the same time a real joy to use. Now looking to get first serie of Super Takumar, since itbis different than the rest, one element less and I heardstory that Pentax did not made any money on this one (cause is so good for the money) that they decided to reduce cost on second and third generation by adding glass elements and torium.I 'm hunting this one for a few years....collector item pfffff.

    One thing I find a bit inconvenient is the sheer size of M42/FX adapters, they add about 1 1/4 inches stand-off to any M42 lens.
    That's why I prefer to use old rangefinder lenses - they only add about 1/2" of protrusion. I highly recommend the following: Jupiter 8 (50mm F2) Industar 69 (28mm F2.8) ...the latter is a hilarious uber thin pancake lens and is highly hackable and can be picked up for beer money. Also any of the old Leitz lenses if you can afford them.

      A Jupiter 8 in good condition from the late fifties is a thing of joy, as is the Industar 61, LD or not, very underrated little lens.

      Problem is, no M42 or Exakta mount gives infinity focus on a Nikon F mount! I was forced to the 'Dark Side', i.e.-Canon!! Picked up a EOS 5 for $40!!

    • @markus7975
      @markus7975 7 лет назад

      Yes and no. I own a RMC Tokina 28mm f2.8 and can focus to infinity. My Auto Revuenon 55mm f1.4 can't focus to infinity but it's not a big deal. You can focus up to 300-400 meter. So basically it works except for things like landscape. All tested with a D500 and an adapter with correctional glass.

    • @williampower2333
      @williampower2333 7 лет назад +1

      Ah, but there's the rub! The glass corrector destroys the IQ! It sure ain't Schott glass! Probably recycled pickle jars!!

      @eustacequinlank7418 7 лет назад

      That's actually a prudent move. I might do the same. What adapter do you use for your Canon?
      Actually, question goes for Fluppi too, what adaptor for your (Nikon D600, F100 in my case) I know of the Fotodiox ones. I'm just really keen not to fuck up the bayonets quite frankly.

      A question, if I may! Do the Auto-Quinars only close the aperture when the lever next to the shutter release is moved or will it stay closed down when the aperture ring is turned? Thanks!!

    • @chrischrist6029
      @chrischrist6029 7 лет назад

      The Auto Steinhell works just like any lens with aperture ring, you set the aperture manually and it stays at that aperture, unless you change it by hand.

    • @williampower2333
      @williampower2333 7 лет назад

      Thank you, Sir!! Much appreciated! Guessing that the button opens the aperture to focus, then, when released, closes down to taking aperture?

      OM Zuiko 28mm F2.8? Mine has always been great (bought it new back in the day) or a fabulous lens, the Pentacon 30mm f3.5, so useful, however slow it may sound, that's really not how it feels.

    The paradox that is Helios... Is it a copy or is it not? Perhaps it's an attempt at a copy, but according to your other video it's not even that. Anyway, I have an old biotar 17 blade and a helios. Besides the hassle of having to pull the biotar apart, cleaning it and putting it back together, I would always go with the biotar for commercial work. The helios is a fun toy for some additional images when time pemits. Than again, if you are feeling artistic, why not just swipe some expired 4x5 film off ebay and see what effects it gives you? Just my 2 cents.
