One of my favorite character deaths (my own character) was a two-bit con that was held underwater in a horse trough by an iron golem until he drowned. I'd put myself in this horrible position (on purpose because this guy was no much fun to play) and despite all of his lying and conniving could not get out of the grasp of an iron golem, I thought it was a perfect ending for him.
I have no trouble when PCs assume room temperature. Without the risk there is no value in a victory.

On the topic of different styles of playing: almost every single spell and feat in the game (5E, at least) is combat-focused, so the incentive to do something besides cracking skulls is.... well, there isn't any in the books. Sure, there are some rules about having a keep, but pretty much everything else - let's call it living - is left up to the DM and the players. And if only one player in the group wants to, say, open up an inn and murderhobo the countryside on weekends, then the group is going to do nothing but adventure the countryside and kill things.
You need a really good DM to, say, incorporate political intrigue on a grand scale into the campaign; it's one thing to cast Disguise and go cause chaos in a court, but it's something else entirely if the player then wants to pretend to be the murdered ruler and take over the kingdom.
I'd be totally cool with my players wanting to do The Sims: Faerun...

You nailed it! There were entire chapters of the 1e dmg on running your own kingdom/barony/ hold. It was a different time.

Pesonally, i like to limit the amount of things that stop someone from plaing the game artificially.
When you die, and you cannot be resurrected yet, you either play the spirit of rhe character to help the party slightly, or something.
If its a tpk, now the campaign is fighting your way back from the outer planes back to your bodies.
The stakes often are greater than death. If the party is dead before the bbeg, they get to proceed with their plan unbothered, and the players either play with new characters in that future, or eventually get there after their characters are revivied.

The first group i played with we had pc vs pc in about 50% of adventures.
In my 3rd group being in military at the time my pc killed 8 others I n the group. DM punished me by making me join the evil in Dark Tower. Haven't played since early 2000s. Not sure i would like the current climate with safty rules.

The good news is that groups can play however they wish! Hard mode all the way!
