I really like how the black armour came out, it looks great! I always love how smooth your airbrushing technique is, my attempts always come out a little too grainy for my liking. Regardless of what thinner/paint combos I use. I might have to pick up one of your guys Airbrushes!
Let’s sort out an airbrushing day.
@@cultofpaint next time you're at Element Games, I'll pop along!
@@PeteTheWargamer can i come too?!
@@PeteTheWargamer ah cool, do you work at element?
I buy all my stuff from there. online though, I live nowhere near the place.
The different coloured oil colours on the fabrics blew my mind! So simple but it's subtley different and interesting.
This was awesome.. thanks for sharing. I've learned a lot from this.
Glad it was helpful!
Love the work you did mixed oils, washes, and regular paints, would love to see more
Just popping in to reiterate that this awesome. I'll be revisiting and commenting for years to come.
I really enjoy your videos Henry, top job.
Thanks a lot, I enjoyed making this one
Great work, congratulations, the results is quite spectacular
Thank you very much!
Cracking tutorial. I think I’ll use this for my Black legion
I was thinking as I was painting it that it would make a nice BL scheme. Give us a tag if you do, I’d love to see it.
Thank you! I love your videos! I'm very interested in your take on for example a adeptus mechanicus miniature!
Oooooo yeah some ad mech would be fun!
@@cultofpaint please! 🙏🙏🙏
Great take on the black templar scheme, should have put money on it that your were gonna use burgundy instead of red 😆 good job man
It is the finest of paints!
Amazing job Henry! I'd love to see more videos like this
Thanks!
@@cultofpaint I keep coming back to this video, I must've watched it at least 20 times. So good. I've got this idea in my head of doing Black Legion but highlighting up the armour with brown, similar to how you've used grey in this video. Was thinking Grim Brown and Grey Brown by AK. I've tried doing it by edge highlighting but I just hate that way of painting and it's demotivating me, I much prefer the look that you guys achieve with airbrush and tippy tap highlights
Always love new ways to paint black, especially with my HH Destroyers. Can’t wait to see what else is coming down the 30k pipeline!
Destroyers are so much fun to paint
Yes please, more grimdark!
I'd love to see more videos in this style, excited to see your take on the more Grimdark style of painting.
Thanks!
Looks fantastic, so much character! More grimdark exploration, please :D
Ok!
Looks great Henry. I’d love to see some different 40K races in any of the grim dark styles if you were to continue and do more in this series. Enjoy your Sunday guys 👍
Good shout on varying up the races Jim
Grimdark, so hot right now.
Good mini, thank you for sharing.
I do have a paint called Blue Steel……
Great result with the armour and all. Please do more with your grimdark approach. Cheers.
Ok will do!
Favourite video to date. Fantastic!
Thanks Callum
Looks fantastic Henry. More grimdark please 🤙🏻
WOW!!! Looks amazing. Grimdark looks so good. Imagine an army painted to that level and as you say, even more details on the characters. Wauw.
It’d be pretty fun right!?’
Always love your videos, they have inspired me so much over the last year and kept me going when life got too much, when I can afford to donate I certainly will. Thanks Henry.
Any chance of a gobsprakk video? The kruleboyz video was one of my favourites.
Thanks very much! I'm saving the big bird for last with the ruleboyz, and I'll certainly document it.
Love this look!!
Hey I don't say that often but that mini looks great ! Good job and thanks for the vid !
Lovely paintjob man. I really enjoy the grimdark approach myself. Would love to see more of these vids
I’d like to do some more for sure
Love love love this approach! Video saved! More like this, please and thank you. :D
I’d love see more grim dark style painting and I’d love see how you scale it up onto something like a Redemptor or one of the tanks
That’d be fun for sure, I think a walker.
I love this painting style, would love to see more
I like it, a lot. I feel like it is a great "whole army" paint scheme, but I do not feel like it is Grim Dark. I feel it fits more into the Blanchitsu style, like you mentioned. But Grim Dark, IMO, would feel more worn, battle tested, and "hashed up" in its look and feel. Though I do feel like you nailed a method of using oil washes/paints to create a beautiful Black Templar color scheme that is better than table ready in a reasonable amount of time.
Your oil washes were great but next time, paint those eyes in.
I hope I don't come off sounding like a jerk; I love your work, and please keep teaching us.
Nicely done, looks really good! I would love to see more of these grimdark videos!
I would definitely see more Grimdark videos. I hadn't been a fan of the style, until I saw your take. It looks good.
Thanks! I definitely think there is more to grimdark than drowning a mini in streaking grime ;)
Definitely not jealous that you've got this model already
It is a fun one isn’t it.
I would enjoy seeing High Marshall Helbrecht in the same style next. He has awesome red/gold power armor and big flowing cloak and giant sword. The new model has an epic base too
Great work Henry, very cool to see this 'accessible' intro to the grimdark style. The return of barak nar Burgundy also made me giggle 😁
Lovely work, perfectly fits the Black Templar vibe!
That is a really nice paint job and so different to the normal Black Templars ideals we see so many recreating.
Beautiful work, love those shoulder pads👍
I'm used to working with oils on armour models, but had not considered taking them to my figures to this same extent. Will have to remedy that after seeing this - thanks! Would love to see more as well.
Oils are soooo good.
Awesome video.
Wow, I'm genuinely blown away by what you did on the cape. I've never seen a technique like that. It's nearly 6:00am now so just skipping through this, I'll have to watch it properly after I've been to sleep.
Hello Henry, looks awesome (again) ;), and yes sure i would love to see more grimy darkness happening here. One can never have enough of that, keep the grimbuzz going :). Love to see more ways to approach such a style of painting on 40K and AoS alike. Thx for great vid, cheers.
Grimbuzz!
Another great video! Missed your soothing voice Henry. ;)
Haha thanks!
Great job bud!!
I'm very intersted by grimdark style and i love very much your video 👍💪🔥
I adore that model. It suits a proper 90's Blanche scheme like yours.
Hi Henry. Your paint work on this Templar is fantastic! It's interesting to me that Games Workshop can't seem to do this to their own miniatures, when they invented their own Grim Dark setting. It takes someone like you that has some creativity and skill to do it. I also have a strong interest in seeing the Dark Angels painted up in a grim dark style. They are kind of the poster children for Grim Dark in 40K, yet I never seem to see anyone paint them in a grim dark style. I would very much like to see how you approach the green and red, and also the bone colors of the Death Wing as well. The way you handled the bone colors on this Black Templar tell me that it would be a superb alternative to how everyone typically paints them.
Hi Dennis, thanks for that. Check out the Indomitus playlist for a different take on the deathwing
Definitely more grimdark stuff!
Hi Henry, thank you for awesome video. So many great ideas! Love your approach 😊
As of today I have watched all your video's. Great production quality on all of them.
I like to thank you guys for making them.
Thanks for watching them all and taking the time to comment so frequently. I hope you continue to enjoy the channel!
@@cultofpaint I am sure I will. Will also come back an watch some a second time right before I try stuff myself. Will also consider subbing to you guys Patreon to check out the other content
More grim dark!
... fantastic!
'Sans', to be without, Sansodor; without odor. Great work, liked and subscribed.
Thanks and welcome aboard!
Keep the grim dark style coming please. I found that while it is pretty gritty already you can still see all the cool details on it. I suggest you could go a little bit more dirty and battle damaged without sacrificing readability
Completely forgot about this video but rediscovered it when searching for a new Dark Angels heresy project. Exactly the look I want.
More grim dark more often, love this. On marines, titans, whatever, great watch.
Pleeeeeaaaaase continue these grimdark videos.
Ok deal!!
Please do more grimdark 😍
Love love loved this!! More please ❤
I love those shoulder pads, im experimenting around with airbrushing them using the same colors for my crusaders, looks so much cooler than the typical bone white color
Why hasn't this video gotten more views and likes? It's damn awesome!
Love the video man great scheme and techniques. and just to let you know you have Reddish Brown in the description rather then Reddish Grey. was a little confused when I went looking for it. Cheers have a great day
Thanks for the heads up!
The AdMech characters would be great to do in this style. Love how it turned out.
Yes both the abteilung 502 series are by ak interactiv. Both the oils and the artist acrylics ranges
Thanks
I'm in love with this model, and your paintjob suits it perfectly! As for other models done in a similar style, I think it would be really cool to see a thousand son rubric marine or terminator. Heresy or 40k paint scheme, im totally struggling to figure out how to paint my Thousand Sons starter set so any inspiration would be nice! Thanks!
Ksons vid will be out soon for both varieties
Looks amazing. Definitely going to try out those AK greys!
Some very nice ones that in that range
A new vs old emperors champion model would be awesome or at least the new one in grimdark would be awesome. Also grimdark salamanders!
Nice!
This an Castellan Crowe are such amazing models for the simple fact that they are upscaled OG marines. Primaris are fine but they are not 40k enough not Space Marine enough if that makes sense. We have lost the Knights in Space thing which sucks because that's what makes SM so damn cool. The armor is futuristic but at the same time medievil in its overall ascetic which is amazing. The Castellan here looks amazing imo and I love how you've painted him up.
MORE GRIMDARK!
Awesome stuff as always. I personally think it's still a LITTLE too Grey. And I think some edge highlights would go a long way. But I know why this wasn't done
I would love to see more grimdark!
Very nice Henry and Cult of Paint. This definitely fits more with my style so I love it and would like more, but your variety is top notch!
Just on the process, did you remove any of the oil paint off the black armour? It looked very different after it had dried!
Hi Charlie, no nothing once it was dried. But as you can see I was reapply, thinning and mixing on the mini a bit.
@@cultofpaint thanks Henry, love the video and the result
never seen pink/purple on something grimdark but I think it kinda works
def more grimdarko r banchitsu style vids please
Amazing paint job! A great fan of your work, i've missed some red elements, which oil paint would have you used if the capes/weapon was red? I want to try it out tho
Just any red oil. And add that instead of dust
Most awesome Sir, most awesome
Please paint & convert a Primaris figure as a Horus Heresy aged marine then a guardsman looking smaller in a uniform of pompous Regiment. Many thanks I'm a new subscriber and i love your work !
Looks incredible but imo he needs an imposing glowing eye lens O_O
Great job! Is there an alternative for the panelliner for white and winter camo? Maybe mix some oil colors vom abteilung 502 (maybe dark green and brown?)? Or a contrast paint thinned down?
Yeah a mixture of those oils would work just fine
More grimdark please
How would you go about painting the reds for gun casings/sword breathen shoulder pads as well as the reds for capes in a similar grim dark fashion?
People often misconstrue "grim dark" and "desaturated grey".
Take a look at Blances orginal art that was used as tremplate for that minie, or any of Blanche's personal minies, it's pretty colorful, full and full of saturated colors (mostly black, white and red, but still all of them are poping up in his art.
I'm loving your style of grimdark. Any chance of a Space Wolf and a pre-tainted Death Guard in the same style?
A space wolf would be fun
@@cultofpaint Yeah.... I'd like to see a grimdark version of the old Space Wolf grey perhaps?
Was wondering if I could use an oil wash like this on the armor. Seen a lot of folks airbrush black templar contrast over it but I may use oils like this over the under sketch
Yes you could.
Yay! Henry video!
I’ve been lurking over on our Patreon for a few weeks!
Amazing video. How long do you need to let the oils dry before you can work on top of them with acrylics?
I leave them overnight. But it very much depends on how you've applied them. If in doubt you can always do a quick satin/matte varnish over them first.
I'm thinking of adapting this to a normal crusader squad but feel like they would need some edge highlighting as they lack the natural panel separation of this model. Any tips for the paints?
Hey man, i believe you used to have a video up about how to add paint chipping to space marines. if so, what happened to it?
Awesome! How about some nasty deathguard?
Are there any other kind!?!
@@cultofpaint only the ones on the box art, we need a nasty CoP-version for Papa Nurgle
S A N S A D O R
How about you tell us what you did for the base
How about you check out the link that's in the video that's a dedicated video on how we do the base, and use the pigments that are in the description. Like we said in the video.
Without having so many bits or interest or metallic on the regular Black Templar infantry, would you still do the same technique? All the black armor might look boring.
I’d do the same. You’ve got the option for red trim, the white chapter symbols etc
more grim dark.
What did you fill that grand canyonesque gap in the pauldron with?
just plastic glue and squeezing.
20:17 Black background for sure. That's the way I photograph them. A friend suggested a white background. Hell no.
xD
what's the vallejo texture stuff you use on the base, please? always looking for new basing stuff.
Vallejo thick mud acrylic. Check the basing video in our Indomitus playlist, full tutorial :)
@@cultofpaint thanks.
@@cultofpaint I think GS world do something similar. As I'm ordering some stuff from them soon I'll probably get their one.
as I have to pay a chunk for postage I might as well make the most of it.
How do you reduce clogging in your airbrush? Seems no matter what I do my airbrush clogs about 10 mins in, I have tried thinner paint, higher pressure etc. And it just seems to clog still.
Hard to know without seeing you airbrush. But generally it will be finding that consistency/psi ratio. Check out our playlist on airbrushing, might be some useful tips in there.
@@cultofpaint thanks for the reply. I have watched them and they were useful when getting started, may be my technique that I need to work on.
I have seen references to Grim Dark lately. What does it mean?
It’s a loose term for a sort of gritty, dark, baroque, grungy vibe that you get in a lot of warhammer artwork/settings
Can the taberd be done with arcyls?
Absolutely
what kind of black oils did you use?
Black. Abteiling 502
