My Favourite Anime Studio

- I've always found it hard to talk about anime studios. I've always found most anime studios lack identity but recently i've found a studio that has captured my imagination. In this video I talk about how the studio came to be and what works define them.

Where my Shaft fans at?
ygyguii i really like shaft's stylistic quirkiness
they broke their necks because of all that head tilting
a studio where you need atleast 5 spare spacebar keys
Ayyyy!
*tilts head* "oh hi!"
I feel that studio Trigger has a very solid identity
gainax as well
Gainax used to, that identity has now gone to trigger.
old Gainax was amazing but too many key people left or retired!!! what a damn shame but at least we got TRIGGER
yeah, good animation and dogshit stories
Bones. They have some good animators.
It's probably the action scenes. Good stuff.
Madhouse.
Yea
@@elijahgabe21 if we are talking about identity.. madhouse is a complete mess...ya they are great studio's with maasterpieces ..but...total mess
Gainax/Trigger shows is pretty easy to spot.
Kyoto Animation because their have the same staff and their own identity at every anime
Because they are one of the few studios that are not in Tokyo. They are in Koyoto
ye no doubt kyoto animation is my fav studio.
Ready for Violet Evergarden?
Man Soo Takeda so fucking ready man!
no but its certainly a plus
My favorite anime studio by far is Trigger. The way they animate things is fantastic. They can handle both crazy, insane settings like in Space Patrol Luluco and Kill la Kill yet somehow manage more subdued shows like Little Witch Academia with the same amount of creativity. Every single frame of animation is just booming with personality and even if there are talkative scenes they are never boring to watch.
Studio 4C was pretty experimental back in the day. Too bad not many people has heard of them.
They are certainly very out there, which may be why many people don't know them. They are releasing a new film this year called Mutafukaz.
I feel bad for every overworked animator.
Saru and Trigger are both very solid examples of studios with strong, collective identities. Another favorite of mine as studio Telecom (founded by Yasou Otsuka) as they existed in the late 70s and 80s, where they produced some of Miyazaki's earliest directorial works. This being before Miyazaki became very well known, I feel the studio is allowed more identity as a team. They're still around in name, but that distinct sense of character is gone.
I liked Production IG for GITS, Jin-Roh, and Psycho Pass. But I also give props to Madhouse for the 74 wonderful episodes of Monster that I recently binged on (and finished). Johan Liebert is now my favorite villain.
Lastly, I really enjoyed the recent works of Polygon Pictures. Knights of Sidonia, Ajin, and all the sneak peeks of the upcoming Blame! movie.
Madhouse actually uses a LOT OF animators from other studios and is very inconsistent
But still the quality is high so I like them
I love that you look at anime as art rather than just looking a action and moe stuff
Trigger, Gainax, madhouse, kyoto , madhouse, and production IG are a few of my favorites.
I'm also between them and Trigger, because I'm in favor of free form animation, instead of rigid animation, but definitely Yuasa is also my favorite. I'm also looking for whatever Oshiyama does next. Let's hope this kind of style keeps growing.
In spite of them having put out quite a few less than stellar projects, Bones remains my favourite. Gainax comes in at a close second. The fluidity of the former's animation as well as the latter's audacity are things I utterly adore about them.
I've not seen enough of their stuff to comment on them but yeah, KLK was definitely great.
my favorite is MadHouse, it has to be, they are the ones who make the anime i connect the most
Good choice :)
MadHouse were behind Kaiba. So great choice!
Man, and to think about you made this video on 2017, when Science SARU had only, like, 2 anime (Ping Pong and Space Dandy). I can't even imagine how proud you are seeing that they have made Devilman Crybaby, Super Shiro, Eizouken, Japan Sinks, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and Dandandan.
Your videos make me fall in love with Anime (and Yuasa) over and over again. Thank you ✨
In terms of animation: Studio Bones
In terms of Classics: Studio Ghibli
In terms of Adaptation and variety: Madhouse
In terms of fate: Ufotable
Thank you SO MUCH! I had no idea they had so many projects. I love Tatami Galaxy more than anything, no matter how many times I watch it I still can't get enough of their beautiful work.
Kyoto Animation, because of their unique style... and Trigger. Because It is fucking Gainax xD
Thank you for directing my attention to these people and their upcoming works :3
Thanks for watching! :)
great taste there friendo, can't wait til we can see the movies they're gonna pump out this year
in love with you're genuine interest in anime and can see how much effort you put into thinking thoroughly about shows. continue to share you're views with us ..!
Studio Ponoc may turn out to be the next Studio Ghibli with their upcoming film _Mary and the Witch's Flower_.
You're right, they look very promising :)
In terms of variety: Madhouse.
In terms of importance and influence: Toei Animation.
In terms of overall quality: Sunrise.
(Granted, Sunrise and Madhouse have rather similar reasons.)
Tori made some Gita access to
Really good piece. I enjoyed!
I am surprised that this channel is not getting more attention, the analysis and opinions are very subtle and interesting, and definitely bring a new outlook on japanese animation
KyoAni. For creating the most heartwarming and sometimes bittersweet shows. Will love'em forever.
Holy Shit, do I need to see their upcoming projects
Very interesting video. Lu over the wall seems promising!
Nice! Thank you, this is very informative!
I have to agree with this, Science Saru is also my favourite studio in that each series or movie they've made is instantly a favourite of mine, and Yausa/Choi's previous works are also amazing. The only consistently recognisable studios apart from Saru that I can think of are Trigger and Shaft, and I'm not a huge fan of either, though I do like the odd show. I also find it far easier to connect with specific directors, Mamoru Oshii and Hiroshi Nagahama being my favourites (as well as Yuasa obviously), over studios, though that's basically the same with everyone. Great vid though, I'm excited for more
I don't know if you'll read this but i just want to thank you AnimeEveryday. I was a big fan of ping pong the animation and until i saw one of your videos i had no idea about Yuasa's other works. I've pretty much just finished watching Tatami Galaxy and now i see this video where you say they have two films coming this year. I'm a happy guy.
Bones because they make very meaningful works, barely cut corners, and from what I've seen, try to stay away from fanservice.
Production IG Consistently makes great looking and incredible anime. Easily the most consistently good studio in the industry
Oh man that was my favorite episode of Space Dandy too. Didn't even know that was Science Saru's work
Studio Trigger tho
saving anime is hard work.
studio 5c tho
Great video Lewis. Still, wish you would of at least mentioned polygon pictures when you had brought up Netflix Original type shows. Since they do it all the time, but alas nice video. :)
I enjoyed this video, as always you create content that is seeped in hard work. I did however feel that what was being said didn't quite match up with that was on screen. I understand that the clips were of the same theme as the video's title but, for example, when you were speaking about Ping Pong, it didn't even come up visually. It just felt like someone was speaking over a loop of anime.
Thank you so much for this video.
Found "Night is Short, Walk On Girl" subbed recently floating online (I WOULD BUY IT IF I COULD, AND I WILL BUY MULTIPLE COPIES WHEN IT'S AVAILABLE TO ME FOR FRIENDS); it's absolutely incredible. I really have no idea how they consistently manage such a high quality standard. The film is only an hour and a half but it feels like you're watching it for ages, and not in a bad way; it's like paying a small fee for a ticket to a small play you don't really expect anything from and then suddenly they just keep bringing out more and more amazing attractions like a crazy huge circus, the next thing more crazy and interesting than the last one. It's even self-aware of this time-warp feeling, which is so cool. It's really thoughtful and beautiful emotionally, and the callbacks to Tatami Galaxy are a huge treat. (you don't have to have seen Tatami Galaxy in order to enjoy it's beautiful chaos.) The animation is frickin' sublime, especially at the end. Super happy with it.
Realtalk though. I want to support them but I just don't have the opportunity to as an American, it seems. I unfortunately didn't know of this team during the time they were doing the Kick Heart kickstarter. I really really really want to buy Mind Game at least.
-Somewhat crappy opinion, I wasn't a fan of Ping Pong at all. It felt way too 'generic sports anime' to me and no matter how many people told me that it was way more than just a 'generic sports anime', I just couldn't see the appeal. The music is fantastic and at times the animation is good, but it really isn't anything new or interesting for the genre. The writing just seemed like the same drama writing I saw in any other sports anime. Maybe I got spoiled by seeing a lot of the team's works beforehand that I felt disappointed it wasn't something more, and those who never saw the team's works were impressed because they had an aura of vague difference to other generic sports stuff? I wish they knew how much better the team can do.
I'm just some random asshole on the internet though so please don't be offended. I'm not a huge fan of ping pong as a sport to begin with. most sports anime about sports I don't care about have managed to change my opinion about them, which could be a bad thing from my PoV about Ping Pong the animation, but on the other hand maybe it was just made for people who already cared about ping pong as a sport. in which case I was not the target demographic and that's fine.
maybe I'll like it someday. for now i'd rather just re-watch tatami galaxy though.
For me it's a bit hard to decide but my preferences are Kyoto Animation and Shaft. I really enjoy their art style and adaptations. By the way, the background music for this video is really nice!
Studio Ghibli, mostly those that direct by Hayao Miyazaki
studios like bones, madhouse, and shaft have a very distinct style of animation. Even if the directors are different
Do make a video of top favourite anime characters.
I think that Shaft and KyoAni have the most solid identity as far as studios go, needless to say they are also two of my favorite studios.
Madhouse from the late 90s to about 2010 is also really up there. They've struggled a bit in recent years, but could see a come back.
Drop a comment with your fav studio!
Hope everyone enjoys the video :)
Studio Manglobe. feelsbadman.
AnimeEveryday Definitely Kytoto animation and shaft studios. I just can't choose between the two
Well, Its Madhouse
AnimeEveryday A1 have much more producer to form different groups than other anime companys. Each group work their own and have their own resource to produce anime. Therefore, you can find different styles and quantity from A1's anime. Although their have same boss and share some common identity but you can still see A1 as few anime companys.
Did they make anything worthwhile after Proxy? Their eventual demise was unfortunate but that's the anime industry for you.
What's the beat you used for this in the background m8? So chill.
I can't believe Yuasa is working on a Devilman adaptation that's the stuff dreams are made of, Saru are a promising studio their economical approach is also refreshing for an industry infamous for it's overworking.
If you like the unique and creative, Studio 4*C is what you need. They, like Yuasa, made an adaptation (Tekkon Kinkreet) based on Taiyo Matsumoto manga years before he had the chance(Ping Pong). He also worked with them a bunch of times (Genius Party, Noiseman, Mind Game) and they made other cool stuff like, Memories, Princess Arete, Detroit Metal City, Tweeny Witches and Animatrix.
One of the coolest studios out there.
Eun Young Choi actually directed her own episode for the first season of Space Dandy. I really recommend checking it out. I really hope she gets to do her own project one day.
I still consider Gainax my favorite studio in general and Trigger recently, but since Yuasa is my favorite director his studio might take that spot.
I would never have imagined that Science Saru would do Devilman, but may be surprisingly fitting. It sure is going to be interesting to see how it's handled... it's - oh god - so dark. Even darker than Berserk.
studio 4c, i love allll their stuff. masaaki even did one of their works
The two movies by Yuasa this year are pretty much all I'm looking forward to in anything. Science Saru is too without a doubt my favorite anime studio.
porbably Shaft or KyoAni, as different as they are i love both studio's distinctive style and they have produced some of my favourite series like monogatari, hyouka, arakawa under the bridge, madoka, mekaku city actors, sound! euphonium, nichijou and kyoukai no kanata
Gotta go with Madhouse. It's true that they don't have a consistent staff or stylistic identity, but they've put out so many of my favorite series and films (ranging from Death Note and Parasyte to Kon and Yuasa works) that it would be difficult to name a studio I favor more.
I need to watch more Yuasa stuff. Everything here looks fucking gorgeous. Excited for that new Tatami-like series as well, those teaser clips made me realize how much I missed the show.
(Also Eunyoung Choi is an interesting name for somebody who works on anime. Is she korean?)
What about tekkonkinkreet ? I'm not sure if who you mentioned worked on this but the art style of animes that you show in the beginning are similar
I liked Science SARU & KyoAni. Devilman: Crybaby from SARU was sooo BEAUTIFULLY animated for a gut-wrenching and horrifying anime. A Silent Voice & Violet Evergreen from KyoAni was a big plus for me as well in terms of their animation, gorgeous visuals, and music. I liked MAPPA studios as well for their visuals, CG and animation, but i do feel that they need to pay the animators better there unlike Science SARU & Kyoani. To be honest, i would LOVE to work with both Science SARU & KyoAni. I've always wanted to experiment with my own animation with the anime industry in Japan. My dream will come true in the future. Wish me luck.
Personally I am a bit studio trigger fan. I love the work they did before forming the studio and I have like pretty much every show they have come out with. I love the spastic over the top style. Shaft would probably be my second favorite.
I just watched Night is Short, Walk On Girl. Soo good. I love it. First time watching this Studio Animation. I will look for more. Thanks.
I just saw Night is Short, Walk on Girl and Lu Over the Wall at the Ottawa International Animation Festival, and they are both brilliant! I don't have a favourite anime studio, but I will be keeping a close watch on Science Saru's projects from now on. Just brilliant.
Silver Link is pretty cool. They do alot of slice of lifes and always get great artist to do their backgrounds
I just recently got to know about this studio through Eizouken . I've got to say I'm a fan now .
How natural, no waste
It is an endless chain
What an amazing, wonderful, and excellent!
@AnimeEveryday studio Saru? & what's the name of the animated duo an list of works please? :)
I'm not really a big fan of the Visual style used in Lu over the wall- but the animation is crazy good. I've seen a few bits and pieces on twitter.
I really like your video, though I feel like if you watch Canipa Effect or listen to Digibro after dark, you know *the importance of producers and the studio's vision* that they impose on every single series. I really appreciate you bringing up *Science Saru:* I'm definitely watching everything they every made soon
under the premise of having an own carfed out identity i would say studio rikka for works like eve no jikan, pale cocoon and mizu no kotoba. sadly they dont have much output=/
I got to see The Night is short, walk on girl, and it was absolutely fantastic. Filled with what made Tatami Galaxy great in its lighter and romantic themes. once again world building and animation was on point. Specially on abstract parts as always for Science Saru. I'm sure you'll like it.
I'm surprised studio 4C wasn't mentioned - they have about as much identity as you could get ^^
It's hard for me to pick a favourite studio, especially since I feel I've barely scratched the surface of most of them. But as far as studios/people I'm interested in following, Yuasa/Choi's works are at the top of the list. They look so creative and unique and interesting! I also think TRIGGER and MAPPA are newer studios with a lot of potential. The former in particular has shown a distinctive style and ambition in many of their works.
My favourite studio is White Fox just because of Steins Gate, Katanagatari and Re:Zero :) Kyoto Animation has a chance to become my favourite when I see all the big shows that it has made.
They also did A devil is a part timer , jormungand, akame ga kill, and now are doing Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho which despite having a lot of cliche elements, is thoroughly enjoyable.
Yup, those are also very good shows but my favourite shows from my fav studio are the ones I mentioned :)
Studio TRIGGER is my favorite Studio by far. Everything they have done is great both story-wise and stylistically. Their genius really shines through in the passion they put into their projects. From original Works like Kill La Kill and Little Witch Academia to adaptations such as When Supernatural Battles Become Common Place TRIGGER goes out of their way to be unique and different and that's why I will watch anything they do. Since they are also a smaller studio I see a bunch of names working on the same projects such as director Yoh Yoshinari which is nice to see which adds coherence and recurring motifs and themes throughout their general body of work. They also do more original projects than most other studios which is nice to see and I'm super excited to see Darling In The Frankxx.
Manglobe was my favorite studio. Whether they created a dud or made something that was well received, they were always trying their hand at something in ways previously shied away from. In an unconventional medium like anime, they had always managed to stand on the fringe.
I think production I.G does a fantastic job when working with a more realistic style, like in Ghost in the Shell and Jin-Roh. The way they animated faces and movement in these 2 just sticks with me.
The latter half of this video really connected to me. Niche works are far superior to mainstream stuff.
In addition, I'm tired of having my taste in seinen anime correlate to stuff like ecchi and hentai. Why can't the terms "mature" and "adult" mean the same thing? If I say "mature," I can refer to niche psychological works of Monster, Serial Experiments Lain, Welcome to the NHK, etc. But if I say "adult," people would automatically assume that I'm referring to sexual stuff.
And besides, I took up seinen anime in response to the irritatingly common shounen clichés that I dread. I don't want to see another whiny kid develop into a stoic, overpowered idealist with a flock of women constantly vying for his attention.
+xBoolin
Remember that Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood exists. Still, Hunter x Hunter is easily the second best shounen anime.
Colin Velius Not all shounen follow the same formula, and it's not even a genre, it's a demographic. It all depends on how the writer executes his means to an end.
Nicholas Budiman I agree with you that I shouldn't generalize, but the fact remains that the clichéd formulas and ideas still exist. It's getting increasingly difficult to completely avoid those nowadays when mainstream works do in fact reuse clichés in one way or another. Why? Because ecchi sells; harems sell; incest sells; whatever the cliché has been proven to be popular amongst the masses. My original point was that niche works are more unique and draw from a larger pool of creativity. But I never made any claim that seinen = niche and shounen = clichéd mainstream.
Have you seen Psycho-pass and Garden of Sinners?
Johns Conga Just Psycho-Pass so far. Good premise, decent execution, but disappointing ending.
I hope Science Saru does an anime adaptation for Inio Asano's Manga Dead Dead Demon's Dededededestruction because Yuasa's style fits it perfectly tbh.
Can’t wait for their Scott Pilgrim show
I'd also pick Science SARU, but my other favorites are definitely Kyoto Animation and Trigger. The recurring theme here seems to be that all three studios have forged an unmistakable identity for themselves and their works.
ofc A1-Picture shows have something that connects them all: so many butt shots :P
Not to mention the same-face syndrome in their LN anime adaptation!
you guys are dumb. a1 is a lot more diverse than you think. tell me how many buttshots shinsekai yori has. or anohana. or that piano drama anime.
WickedAnimeTroll A-1 pictures' shoes are really diverse because they release an anime every season. It's true that they've made some shitty shows but they've also struck gold every now and then. They're the studio behind Anohana and Your Lie in April but they're also the studio behind Sword Art Online and other generic light novel adaptations set in a fantasy world. Despite that fact the shows are done by different animators, writers, directors and the like. I'd say that there is little to nothing linking A-1 Pictures' works together apart from the name.
Ghibli (Most of their movies), Madhouse (Hellsing Ultimate, OPM, Satoshi Kon's movies, Hosoda's movies, Death Parade), Bones (FMA Brotherhood, Kekkai Sensen, Sword of the Stranger), Kyoani (Amagi Brilliant Park, Nichijou), Trigger + Old Gainax (Gurren Lagann, Kill la kill), PA Works (Shirobako, Sakura Quest), Sunrise (Cowboy Bebop, Gintama) and White Fox (Devil is a part timer) are my favorite studios!
Shaft, because I think the way Akyuki Shinbo and the rest of the staff manage to bring emotions to the screen through the use of creative and unorthodox animation is absolutely astounding. To me the studio really matured in last year's / this year's 3-gatsu no Lion. The way colours, movement and composition mingled together within a perfect pace really managed to bring certain feelings to life in a way no script would be able to. And this is somewhat real in all of their works, be it the formal and sassy Monogatari series or even in the playful and dumb Nisekoi, Shaft always manages to bring the medium to what it is needed, that is: showing instead of saying.
Fernando Sá Nichijou was Kyoani though.
Oh god I always mess up Nichijou and Nisekoi
I would love love love to have them work on more Taiyo Matsumoto adaptions if they ever came about
They gonna make Scott Pilgrim anime series!
You know Yuasa did a Kickstarter a while back: www.kickstarter.com/projects/production-ig/masaaki-yuasas-kick-heart
I loved Kick Heart :)
Finally! That novel is getting animated!!
I saw a rendition of Devilman, and it was insanely gorey. If Science Saru makes anything close to that, they'll have my attention
I don't know that I have a truly "favorite" studio, but the one that comes closest for me is SHAFT. I have yet to come across a single production from them that I didn't at least mildly enjoy. Their work is always unique and their ability to turn even fluffy nothing shows like Nisekoi into something worth the time is truly extraordinary. Also my favorite anime is Madoka, so that might have something to do with it.
Haven't seen the video yet, but judging from the thumbnail it's science saru, right?
have you ever watched Now and then here and there?
What about Devilman now? :)
I'm hoping that the publicity and success of Kimi no na wa that we'll be getting more funding for solid little films
I love Masaaki Yuasa so much that I buy his sketch book
Gainax and now Trigger are studios I love!
I seriously think you should do a video on Devilman Crybaby if you've seen it.
Ping Pong is in my top 3 favorite shows, animated or not. Purely amazing
I suppose mine would be Studio 4°C because of they're work on Memories, Steamboy, Mindgame, Tekkonkinkreet, and the better anime adaptation of Berserk.
So, this will be hard but I think my top 5 studios are
1) Kyouto Animation
2) Madhouse
3) Ufotable
4) These Guys
5) Sunrise
and as an honorable mension (6) PA works!
Over the years I've had a lot of fun getting to know and then following these studios, and I'm glad channels that showcase and promote them exist on youtube :3
My favorite anime studio is Gainax. Well, it use to be. P&S was the last work of theirs that really resonated with me. I loved them for just how many of my favorite anime comes from them, but after Anno left and Trigger formed from them I feel Gainax has lost its magic. I don't really have a favorite studio any more, just a laundry list of studios and directors to keep an eye out for.
Cypher Caliban rip gainax
Night is short walk on girl, I love this movie, the character design of the main character is perfect, simple and very beautiful, she is a lovely girl. ( my english is horrible sorry...)
