Same. Maybe because it’s a more realistic depiction of domestic violence? But also because Misa did not even react to being threatened when they met, but here she does react with fear. If she wasn’t bothered by light lashing out, the scene wouldn’t immediately cause such an uncomfortable reaction from me. But she does, and so maybe that’s why the scene feels like that.

In the manga, Near explicitly tells the new L (aka Light) that on top of him doing nothing these past 5 years, Kira's public approval has actually increased because of him, and we're shown Light sweating on the other side of the phone. I would've loved it so much if Near ordered his members to change their legal names as soon as he heard about this trade for the Death Note. I think that would've been an interesting way to clue the audience in on how the Death Note would treat new names, and it would make Near seem a little more humane. 1:56 i 100% agree that Light SHOULD of killed the entire task force, his father included. As L himself said in a previous episode "where as the Kira I know wouldn't hesitate to kill his own father."
6 28 Again, 100% agree. L doing the whole "if I die, would you take over as L?" to Light, and Light openly saying that L was testing him, explaining the entire amnesia and faking, returning as Kira and becoming L in the future. I always took this as L literally telling, or at least planting, the idea in everyones head that "hey guys, if I get murdered in the next few weeks, Light killed me and this is his plan. Take notice!" And as we know, ONE member of the task force does, which again goes back to the previous point, he should of killed them all the second L died.
27:00 - my thought on the chief still being on the case is this. The moment Sayu was kidnapped, Light should of took the chief of the case and have him placed into that cell he was in back when Light handed himself in, saying something like "Dad, with Sayu missing and everything I know about you, I'm worried the kidnappers will use that to manipulate you somehow. I think it would be best to remove you from the case until we resolve this." Perhaps after he practically begged Light to save her. That way, when they go to LA, the kidnappers wouldnt approach him or hijack the plane. They clearly let Light, Missa and the others board their planes earlier. And as for the "anyone would do the trade" argument, i wouldnt. Because whats stopping them from using the notebook to kill Sayu anyway? Their word? They're criminals.

Regarding your engagement question , I actually think it’s a snap back to reality for Misa. There haven’t been any stakes in 5 years so she’s been able to submerge herself in this fantasy , with her love making the world a better place as a savior for mankind . But now that Light is acting out , Misa is remembering exactly what it was like and I think she’s horrified by it . But she also believes that if she helps Light , they can go back to how things were .

I thank you for posting that comment of yours. I referenced it in the Pastebin I made for my own newer comment because RUclips auto-deletes what I attempted to post for some inexplicable reason (no explanation gets provided, so I can't determine what instance if any of the Scunthrope Problem would be setting it off), detailing that the Savvy Guy Energetic Girl trope (which does apply to Light and Misa) can be treated as a fantasy.
When all is said and done, Death Note is absolutely a case of "reality is harsh" underneath the premise of a magical notebook capable of killing people with insane ease and safety, which even that much isn't going to be covering that statement well. Your comment is welcome for bringing the whole tragedy to attention. Light may have an attempt at Enlightened Self-Interest, but he's no less of a dangerous moron in his own delusions, and the way he treats Misa, while not necessarily as harsh as what Joker has given to Harley Quinn (at least Light doesn't throw Misa out through a 3rd story window), is unnecessarily abrasive and has reduced Misa to being meek. I may not hate Light OR Misa, but I can cite that they're trying to live their fantasies at any cost, and it causes both of them as well as everybody around to suffer and like it.

It's very ironic that the chief couldn't wrap his head around the idea of why officers wouldn't want to help in the kira case at the beginning of the show when they told him that kira can not only target us but a friend and family as well and look where he's at now

  • @thekindgamer1112

Honestly? I can imagine Misa not really caring. She was 100% willing to kill her friend, after all, if it was what Light wanted. If it's what Light wants, she'll be happy with it. (As long as it isn't related to other girls, as we've seen.) I can imagine if Light was truly upset over it, I can see her consoling him.
Honestly, I never considered Light actually caring about his family, though. But watching through this and hearing your take on it made me stop and wonder, and yeah, I completely agree that he probably doesn't just see his family as just...Obstacles. I think it was plain as day that he cares about his family from the get go. Of all the people he relentlessly kills without a second thought, his family is the only time he actually pauses and begins to contemplate. It's the only thing that he actively avoids even thinking about from the start. This is the first time where he doesn't have any control, where he's desperate. He was never in that position against L, even when he had to gambit with his notebook forfeiture. For once, he actually doesn't have a plan, and I think that's what scares him the most.

    Halfway through the episode, but
RE: Light taking up L's mantle being a mistake.
Light taking up L's mantle is actually a perfect play... working under the assumptions light has. And I don't mean with the info light had, he had to assume there were some things he didn't know yet. Primarily im taking about his ego, and the fact he thinks he's smarter then everyone.
To use an analogy, its like how in sailing youd rather a head wind then no wind at all. If you are sailing east and the wind is blowing west you actually still can sail east, it just requires the right arrangment of sails. But if you hit a doldrums, a place with no wind, you're trapped, completely and utterly, no matter how cleverly you arrange your sails.
Similarly, if he is being investigated and lands in contact with the people investigating him early then he has his ear to the ground. Everything they do will give him some information he can use to investigate them back. Every discovery they make he has a chance of figuring out they made it.
But if he kills the task force? No contact at all? That opens up a lot more likelihood he gets found out through sheer bad luck. Imagine Mellow stalking around lights town, a place that L very publicly noted was likely to be near Kira, and while light is out some act of god (a fire, a gas explosion, a flood, ect.) ends up breaking his hiding spot for the deathnote and Mellow just happens to uncover it before light can get back. Likely? No. Narratively unsatisfying? Absolutely. Possible? Yes.
Or perhaps Nier is looking through Ls old cases and finds out something is related to the more supernatural elements of the deathnote? He might somehow be able to find Kira that way.
In both cases light would end up completely blindsided, smacked in the face with a fatal stroke of bad luck he had no chance to prepare for. If he takes up Ls mantle, though, there is a better chance of him knowing where the other investegators might be looking and how close they might be getting and other useful information.
The only possible downside is if he looses the contest of intellects, if he makes a mistake, if he gets *outsmarted*. And no one can outsmart him. Thats like trying out outsmart god.
I mean, he has already and *explicitly* called himself such.
So, yeah, I don't think it was really a mistake in terms of his strategy or him not thinking though things, I think it was his ego that made him convinced this was the best plan of action because he just assumed he'd be able to outwit anyone who came looking for him.

That question about Misa is a good one! Tbh I don’t know either 😅I think she’s written in… contradictory ways a lot of the time, so I see a lot of different reactions making sense for her. But imo an interesting response would be if she remained totally on Light’s side, didn’t question him and remained as faithful as always. But internally, she would be wracked with grief and maybe even guilt for not intervening. For the first time, whether she recognizes it consciously or not, she would feel like she can’t trust Light to share those feelings with or to connect with him in that grief. Like, she’s kept things from him before, but never in a way where she seemed terribly burdened by it iirc. I think it could theoretically drive a wedge in their relationship where they both feel like they have to pretend to be a lovey-dovey couple, Light wouldn’t even notice the difference because I don’t think he realizes that she’s like, a human being, and then at some point Misa would compartmentalize those feelings and it’d be back to business as usual (for real). But that’s just my instinctive take.
Always good to see a video from you!! I started watching it as soon as it came out, but only now did I remember I never actually finished it! Lucky me, it’s like I got *two* new episodes of Overanalyzing Death Note :]

Though I like to mention that Ryuk does care for Misa ever since she got the book back, or really more so to say Ryuk is done with Light at this point. Welcome back, and here's to a gun salute for your grandmother. Hopefully, things will stabilize at least.
Getting to what I've been planning to write, I was already wanting to make some points involving Light being hostile toward Misa in this episode, though before you even reach that point, I'm even more recognizing Light to be a glorified idiot, this time for not recognizing who he has by his side. And what you point out about Light's care toward his family does provide more material to point out.
Whether or not Light is a Complete Monster is ultimately YMMV, and I can point out that vanilla TV Tropes deems Light not killing Sayu to be Pragmatic Villainy, which I can see their point at the point where Light's morals inevitably deteriorate enough and his care for his family isn't necessarily redeeming enough. What I will stand by, however, is that Light is more pitiable than anything, something that his treatment of Misa does still test, but I have something to say about that first and foremost.
Light's treatment of Misa here is needlessly cold, there is no denying that. Shouting her down for trying to check up on him was absolutely excessive, and slapping the offer drink intended for him out of her hand was straight up mistreatment. If not necessarily as awful as the Joker toward Harley Quinn, or definitely not directly (though of course, Joker himself views Harl as a pawn anyway--oh, and high bar, I know), Light definitely let his rage get the better of him to an unhealthy degree. And yet, I'm remembering that Light, not without cause, DOES view Misa as a case of Stop Helping Me when she's acting on her own. He's so blinded by his Knight Templar efforts that he's ultimately not recognizing that people have different strengths and weaknesses, and not even getting into Light's hubris, Light straight up has underdeveloped and mishandled emotional intelligence. The bulk of his mind is focused on mechanical stuff, even if he's not as obvious about it as Dexter from Dexter's Laboratory, except Dexter ultimately shows better moments of empathy, some of HIS better moments involving him actively attempting to keep Dee Dee safe. Light isn't caring to understand the sort of points to what we see with Dexter protecting his Childish Older Sibling. He just wants his definition of the trains running on time. He brings his problems upon himself, but this can very well be the definition of his rigid personality simply being a problem to where he was needing therapy before he picked up the DN, not by all implications him being stuck as a Well Done Son Guy to a rigid in his own right father and an Education Mama. Ah, the dangers of encouraging "independence."
This isn't even getting into how Misa is interested in supporting Light, as you point out. I can safely say that she is recognizing this conflict of interests that Light is having, and wants to figure out what to do about the situation, even if it obviously is out of her hands. I'm reiterating this: "Light, you are an idiot!" He does a bad job of recognizing what he has, and it shows here. You also indirectly let me know that Light's poor regard of Misa absolutely CLASHES with his care for his family, however questionable that still can be. Okay, so Light is caring about family....but isn't that inevitably some case of tribalism? That's something Dragon Ball Super would come to see fit to call out actively, although I'd have to go into VERY active spoilers to mention what I'm talking about. Light Yagami, once again, is a cautionary tale, this time about the dangers of tribalism.
With Misa, even if we shouldn't soon forget about anything involving the Sakura TV incident and its surrounding murders and manipulations, she's at least loyal to Light to redeeming levels. Even if it's not what happens at the end of the series, Light and Misa permanently becoming Boxed Crooks would have been ideal closure, having them actually contribute to the health of society while making sure they're never again threats trying to force their Scare Em Straight viewpoint down people's throats with mass murder. Because I can be sure we can agree that neither of them are just murderers, although Gods do both of them make it hard to find evidence of their redeeming points in their overfocus on evasion of the legal system or, ironically, their very mission statement itself in its apathy.
There is one point that I can cover more actively to punctuate where I'm going with this, and that's the Savvy Guy Energetic Girl trope. It's worth noting that I did the trope workshop entry for that years ago, with a key part of my inspiration being a deviantArt piece that had Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends characters as Death Note characters, and I'm sure you could guess who Mac and Goo were respectively playing on the dA piece. Obviously, however, SGEG can be played in different ways, and you might be familiar with its involvement in the bulk of the Ace Attorney games.
Something I can point out is a game I've been wanting to make with its own story, where the protagonist, a hormone-driven lad wanting to hide as much, eventually first meets with a Manic Pixie Dream Girl by protecting her from a group of scumbags, resulting in the MPDG immediately being enamored with him. The protagonist obviously still avoids announcing his more...ambitious intent with somebody like the MPDG, who proceeds to actively show her trust in him, leaving him to privately wonder whether she's a Shedog In Sheep's Clothing or a Kindhearted Simpleton. When he gets proof that the former isn't a problem and the MPDG, in response to further protection toward her by the protagonist against the story's incredibly cruel and powerful Big Bad, soon after promises to offer him a "birthday present" for his conveniently timed birthday, the protagonist starts subtly hinting his real intent in concern for her welfare. You can probably guess whether or not the MPDG knows the truth from the start, something the protagonist is able to see proof of naturally right after his Hero's Frontier Step with a Heroic Sacrifice directly resulting in the heroes' triumph and that he only survives by chance, and suffice to say, they wouldn't have problems working things out at all from that point onward.
What I can point out is that I realize that the MPDG is a potential Magnificent Baddie, which would actually be perfect for her role by calling out careless imitation of her while still showcasing her merits clear as day, and very likely the only thing I would need to do for that beyond application would be having her enthusiastically encouraging child soldiers to come into battle with apparent disregard to their ages while incidentally directing them to trust the protagonist. What she is designed to be already is somebody who would even revel in her being a Genki Girl to the point where she would lampshade her Savvy Guy Energetic Girl relationships, something that would have material like the Eureka Moment trope. Her intelligence itself is a plot point and most of the other criteria is guaranteed to be covered as well.
I bring up this character concept to provide a compare-and-contrast with Misa. As we know, Misa is devoted to Light, knowing that Light is the dangerous, manipulative vigilante known as Kira. And Misa, like the MPDG I mentioned, is the persistent Genki Girl love interest for the involved crafty protagonist. But this is surface level. What's the key difference? Well, it's simple: Misa enables Light in willful ignorance, which can only lead to disaster; whereas the MPDG goes by actions that just so happen to spark her guy's conscience, and whether or not that was by her design to which she already has Rescue Romance written all over her face for a motive, she would inevitably be happy when her guy lives up to her trust and it leads to very welcome results.
When all is said and done, Light and Misa do have their ideas and points, but they are ultimately Deconstructions. Light thinks he knows best, and regardless of justifications like Misa being a case of Stop Helping Me, it leads to disaster. Misa makes herself into a glorified cheerleader for Light, and regardless of her support for Light being genuine, it leads to disaster. This has more to do with Death Note being more caring about involving deconstruction, but there's only so much that can be done other than take notes and see what can be done for reconstruction, because at least now we should have better understanding of things.

i always thought it was that melo was heavily involved in the latin american drug trade. thats making him likley the most wealthy on the show. they likley land the plane somewhere in mexico as the USA wouldnt allow for random planes to be flying in the airspace (remember this came out not long after 911) plane jackings werea far more popular concept in media.
the reason why they have an underground bunker and packing heavy weaponry is well becasuse the cartel has that kinda stuff. its pretty outlandish way to take the story but like deathnote has always been pretty whacky.

So this episode is one of the better of the timeskip episodes when compared to the manga, and follows it mostly.
Of note is why he would calmly declare it not a hijacking... because he is the pilot. Technically, the vehicle was in his control, and all he did was subdue the co-pilot that wasn't on board with the plan and declare a big threat... which, yeah, distinction without a difference, dude has just done a bunch of crimes and would probably still get slapped with hijacking charges (among others). And while what the crime organization has on him is left vague, in the manga it is also (somewhat) talked about as far as the organization doing the kidnapping and hijacking having a shockingly large reach and... well, as was shown, they have a lot of resources too. I'd imagine this is basically what's left of several crime syndicates that banded together after they all lost a lot of manpower to Kira. So it's basically a bunch of people who have a lifetime in crime that managed to evade Kira that now have MORE info on Kira to deal with that issue. Kinda a scary group, really. We don't need to know the specifics because the implied amount of power the organization has means it could be damn near anything. Either that or the pilot was always one of their members in the first place and still had a flawless record, which is also terrifying for different reasons. It really shows what crime would become in a post Kira world, either going away or escalating in stealth and severity to the point of matching Kira. Most of this is implied rather than openly stated, and in part could be why the last arc of Death Note is considered the weakest. It's not BAD but, well, we'll get there.
As for where they landed, most of the deserts of California are in the southern part of California near where LA and the like are. They probably went past LA, likely to the south, and landed in the deserts in the southeast of California, which is basically that huge bunch of deserts all clumped together in the Southwestern US. Given that commercial flights do include a safety margin of fuel, particularly for ocean crossings, a (relatively) short detour souteast of LA is probably doable. Either that or they aimed further south and landed in Baja California across the border, but that starts to stretch the level of reasonable detours. And yes, a plane could land in a desert and take back off because deserts are full of very flat land. That basically is why you want a runway, but sans runway, all you need is flat enough and long enough to safely stop moving or reach liftoff speed before hitting anything. It wouldn't be a FUN landing or takeoff, and probably would require the plan see some additional maintenance time, and could run the risk of breaking something, but we don't see that happen here so we have to assume that the pilot is good enough and the terrain clear enough to not brick the plane's landing. Given what's hidden here... yeah, it tracks that there'd be a spot that's good enough for a landing.
So what's hidden here can be inferred from where they are, which is the Southwestern deserts of the US which saw a lot of use for something very specific... above ground and underground nuclear testing. Yeah, I'm betting this was a former nuclear testing site, or at least a staging area for it, and has since been abandoned and then basically turned into a spot for criminals to do... well, stuff like this. In the manga, it is mentioned this facility has been used for similar trades in the past, so it's just following a line backwards in time as it gets more and more vague. Again, it's more inferred rather than stated. As for the leads, Mello is of course basically just telling everyone that he probably has guessed is listening in "get fucked lol", and Near is basically going "Huh, so they had an old nuclear facility to work with, that's a CLUE". Where Light and the NPA are going "AH WE'RE FUCKED!" So yeah, effectively this new crime group has possession of an old crime syndicate's location that was probably formally a nuclear testing site that for some reason was just left to rot in the desert.
That all being said, Light did have an out still after all of this, but it would have been BRUTAL.
He would have had to kill the entire NPA task force except for his father and sister, probably kill Misa as well (and take back the notebook entirely), then fake his death. Just full on disappear leaving a Kira coded 'suicide note'. This probably would have left Light in the lurch, and if anyone broadcast his name as the vanished task force member, he would probably just have his name written by the kidnappers "just in case". So not exactly much of an out, but it would have been his best chance to avoid the cavalcade of disaster laying in front of him.
As for Near... in the manga he theorizes that what happens would be the result if Mello had a spy in the SPK (which he did, and was shown in the manga). Right after he thinks that, he gets some nasty conformation of it. The way the anime handles that scene is weird. Also, the member of Near's team that stuck the gun to his head? That was the spy in the manga. And notably he was the only one shown to be taken out via a method like that instead of heart attack, implying Mello showed Near who his spy was at the last second... just to rub it in. Mello be petty.
And by THE spy, I mean the one relevant to this part. There's another, but we'll get there.
And yeah... Sidoh. Man, I'd say the anime did him dirty, but the manga and Ryuk did him dirty too. Just EVERYONE will do that guy dirty.

Regarding the new name thing, far as we know the only time Light has failed to kill anybody was if they were using an alias or if their name was misspelled in the news. No other criteria was mentioned for the Death note failing to kill anybody. I find it very unlikely that nobody ever had their name changed during the 5 years Light has run as Kira and if that had happened, than L should have picked up on that but it's never mentioned. So I assume it works like this, the name you're given at birth obviously works but if your name changes due to say marriage or something like that, than that is your name as well. So the Death note recognizes and can kill you with either name, regardless of which one you write in the book.

I checked the manga. It wasn't even Light's doing since he's actually shocked in his thoughts (Chapter 64, 4th and 5th pages), and Mello's group didn't have any of the DNs at that point. The pilot was simply not under the DN's effects.
