    One thing I always liked, Light got power and immediately planned how he was going to use it. Lelouch got power and integrated it into an already existent plan.

    • @MrEffectfilms
      @MrEffectfilms 9 месяцев назад +95

      Another interesting point of comparison is how horrified they both were the first time they used their power. Once Light confirmed for sure that the Death Note was real he went into a full on existential crisis and his mind basically snapped. When Lelouche used his Geass and made those guys kill themselves he was horrified by it until he realized what he could then do with this power.
      By all accounts, Lelouche should have been far worse than Light given their reactions, instead he tried to save an entire nation and people while Light tried to literally rule the world.

      @@chaosryansyep, it’s conviction. The end of Death Note is proof positive that Light was just another criminal. When he’s finally caught, he acts just like every scum bag does. Cries and makes excuses. Lelouch has principles, and will fight, and will die for them.

      @@chaosryans i think another thing is that this is one of the few times "redemption through death" actually means something. personally, i find the concept incredibly stupid. people are, in most cases, always more valuable alive if they actually seek redemption. if the most awful yet powerful people in the world gave up their ways and legitimately wanted to help humanity, unaliving (sorry sometimes yt dislikes that word) them would be throwing away their intrinsic value that they have with their mere existence. the only reason we can't do that is that unfortunately most people like that are too awful to where realistic circumstances would not be able to change their minds. lelouch's death was directly the solution to the problem and the only way to solve the problem. he wasn't just dying to "atone", he directly and deliberately knew that his death was what needed to happen to fix the world.

    Remember, Code Geass is an anime original. It did not have a manga to adapt. That's why it can do stuff like that Knighmare vs. Tank sequence and Leoluch's Geass Visions, which are both elements that would have been hard to get across in manga form. Making the most out of the medium is one of the things that elevate this series.

    I think Lelouch helping out the people in the truck is interesting when contrasted with his lax attitude towards the dead from the broadcast. It seems to highlight the conflict between his desire to not care about the lives and wellbeing of others (so long as he can accomplish his end goal) and his inner empathy. Despite proclaiming that one can't change the world, he's the first to try and help people when they're in front of him.

      I think the fact that they were right in front of him was the reason why. He has no power to help the ones dying, so why care? But he'll help if he has the ability. I don't think it has to do with an internal conflict

    • @Yodah97
      @Yodah97 9 месяцев назад +21

      He's also a take charge kind of guy. Of course he'd rather run in and take care of things, rather than trusting the mob or britannia authority. If there were injured people, he'd immediatly get to first aid, pulling people out, giving orders to whoever could move, etc.
      He's putting himself at more risk than the average citizen, too. Leoluch is in hiding, after all, and appearing on TV as a local hero or even having his video shared online could blow his cover. We see later that Clovis recognizes him immediately on sight. No one who's seen Leoluch as a kid ever has trouble recognizing him as an teenager (he's 17 now).

    • @Aryasvitkona
      @Aryasvitkona 8 месяцев назад +8

      I believe part of it is stemming from the "O God, give us the serenity to accept what cannot be changed, the courage to change what can be changed, and the wisdom to know the one from the other." type mentality. There is nothing he can do for the dead so he feels no emotion towards them, he has the serenity to accept it for what it is. Meanwhile when the truck crashes in front of him he immediately knows there may be people who need saving, and in this moment he CAN do something, so he is immediately compelled into action.
      Honestly I view it as a pretty nice part of his character and it's largely how he acts through the series. He treats inevitabilities with a calm and collected demeanor, while if he screws up it emotionally destroys him.

    Fun detail. When Kallen is getting into the Glasgow, we see her take her coat off and drop it on the floor. Later, when Lelouch considers using a terrorist communicator as a bargaining chip to get the military to help him, Kallen's coat is folded up beside him.
    In short, Lelouch is so obsessed about orderliness that he stops to fold up a coat that he sees a random terrorist discard. While he is still stuck in an 18-wheeler with another terrorist and a possible biologic weapon, and while also being shot at by the military.
    Just a magnificent example of show-don't-tell characterization.

    Some stuff I wanna note for part 2 because I really hope this gets observed:
    Mechs, especially in anime, tend to be inspired heavily by air combat. Code Geass goes an extra mile, when Lelouch captures a knightmare he uses its sensors and the enemy Datalink (the real world term for what he explains in the show) to coordinate rather than fight directly.
    This lines up with an often overlooked role in air combat, the AWACS, which uses a heavy duty radar with no weapons and acts as a flying command post.
    Also no aviation nut post would be complete without identifying the planes in the opening. F-15s and YF-23s are both featured, though they look like sci-fi ships they're real aircraft (though the YF-23 was a cancelled prototype).

    Could've added that the prince's poor attitude is meant to desensitize the audience from the gravity of Lelouch's murder, Lelouch being the protagonist of the series means that the audience needs to be entertained by him, like him and understand his rage; therefore those who stand against him should be seen as callous, racist, genuinely terrible people if Lelouch is going to actively fight against them.
    I also feel like this is why the theme of racism is so commonly imbued into the upper classes, that Lelouch despises, as they are responsible for what happened to him during his childhood.
    Thanks so much for entering this anime; I love your videos

    • @jayt9608

      Rivalz is also a member of that upper class as well, and while he is somewhat racist, it is not intended with actual malice. He would be more like the average person in the 1940s before the Civil Rights movement kicked off. Casual racist comments might be made behind closed doors or with intimates, but they would knock their child into the next county for disrespecting and adult of darker complexion. His attitude toward them in general is wrong, but he would help someone across the street no matter their ethnicity. He is a racist, but not a bigot. Nor would he approve of the wanton murder that enthused Jeremiah.
      I think that we are meant to see the absolute worst in the aristocracy, though Clovis is not actually as bad as he is portrayed and had done some good prior to his panicked order to cleanse the ghetto. It is not the casual racist like Rivalz that are the targets of Lelouch but rather the murderous and effete elite that are his target. By targeting the ghetto in an attempt to save his hide, Prince Clovis set himself up to be the first of many deaths.

    In this way, C.C. may be named for the _sidhe_ ("shee", note Japanese would pronounce C as "shi") the Irish Iron Age tombs and earthworks revered as entrances to the Celtic Otherworld. That, over time, become a synonymous name for faeries. Or ghosts like the banshee ( _bean sidh,_ "fairy/mound-woman").

    One thing I really liked about the opening is the showcase of the invasion via a simple plan / showcase of forces.
    The first time I watched the opening I didn't even see the japanese defence forces / didn't recognise them as such. It shows how insanely less powerful their defences were.

    So yea, i wanted to express what i feel about this video, i already put a thumb up button on that, i am and i will surely anticipating for the new overanalyzis not even for Code Geass, for all animes at all(ofc it would be cool asf if you finish Code Geass and Code Geass R2), so yea, keep it on brother, your job isn't bad and it is underrated, good luck!!!

I'm actually writing Episode 03 right now and it's on track to be my longest video yet, which is actually insane, seeing as it's not even like a landmark episode like Episode 25 of Death Note. It's just so thicc with stuff to analyze, so I'm having fun with it!

    Someone else mentioned the alternative firing mode on the Sutherland's standard weapon, but it's also highly likely that the wound we've seen on the truck driver was caused by shrapnel. There was a hole blasted through the windshield and with that glass could've lacerated his shoulder, upper torso, and arm as well as getting lodged in

  • @SebasTian58323

    Lelouch is such an interesting character! As others have mentioned, he's the only one to go help the people in the crash, and even seems to dislike how nobody else even tried to help. Later on, Shirley will say that the reason she started liking him was because she saw him helping an older person who got rammed in a traffic accident and the other driver blamed the guy. It's also important to remember that the Lelouch we see for most of this episode is the act he puts on for school, and his friends there. So his statement about not being able to change the world is likely not what he truly believes, but what he wants others the think he believes. We know he already has the idea to obliterate Britannia from the flashback, and destroying one of the world's superpowers would undoubtedly change the world. There's so much I could go into, but that's all much later and I'm at work. I'll just be listening to this video while I'm working.

    An interesting note that you'll probably get to when it comes up (it's mostly pieced together during background moments), but the year system a.t.b doesn't line up with our current years. I don't remember the exact year 0 a.t.b, but it's sometime during the American Revolutionary War, which is actually where Code Geass' timeline in general stops being synced with our real world.

  • @Megaritz

    The attack on Shinjuku is reminding me a lot of the mass murder Israel has been carrying out in Gaza. Hamas is objectively a lot worse than the rebel faction in the show (iirc none of Lelouch's allies are insane fundamentalists, whereas Hamas are insane fundamentalists), but in each case there is a widespread dehumanization of the colonized population of civilians.
    Inb4 "you're making it political" or something. It is a political show about how imperialism is bad. The Israel/Palestine comparison is appropriate, especially since we can acknowledge differences as well as similarities.

    • @yairklein-mp8vo
      @yairklein-mp8vo 4 месяца назад

      what bullshit are you talking about? there is no occupation in gaza. gaza was independent for 20 years and is now are at war for their actions. and there are no colonies or colonization in gaza at gaza, just war. it is more like if the japanese first attack and killed a lot of americans, and then the US turn the tide and bomb them. just like in real life.
      sounds to me like your just searching to make it political more then anything else.

    I really liked this show. It is pretty fast, and it gives that feeling of strategy and vulnerability in a similar way as deathnote. Technically a powerful boon, but it has major drawbacks too or at least limitations. I also kind of like the way they portray that he's kind of an arrogant guy that is really pushed to stick it to the people that dog on him, so his endeavors feel very personally driven while everyone else is doing it in a joined effort and are forced to just cling to him out of desperation.

    FINALLY i am so happy you finally got to cover the series
    Your commentary was great as always i am very interested how you will cover episode 7 the episode that showed one of the most important messages of code geass unity and teamwork
    Episode 8 one of the best episodes in the series establishing the black knights and having one of the best moments of lelouch
    The fight in Narita mountain a great duet of episodes showing one of the most powerful assets of lelouch his use of the environment that ultimately saved him during the final battle and the black rebellions as well as
    The mao episodes truly great episodes showing how lelouch could end up and was close to fully being as well as having one of the best moments he had and one of the few solo wins he accomplished in the series
    Episode 17 great foreshadowing for many things and just a nice moment where lelouch and suzaku aren't tied to duty and ideals and can just fight together
    The euphemia episodes in the island learning of lelouch fond memories of his brothers and sisters was great and "the incident" will be wonderful to see
    And the finale the black rebellion will be something to see i can't wait to see you cover it
    Also will be interesting to see you cover characters like alucard himself during both season as well as orange boy during the second and the royalty would be interesting like Clovis who had a little more to him
    Also a certain traitor , a certain person who outsmarted zero and beat kallen and a certain prince also Sayoko very nice character
    Excited to see her covered
    And when you cover season 2 i am excited to see some of the best episodes in the series like 1 and 2 , 4 ,6 , 7 that i don't want to say more until we go to season 2 but one of the most powerful episodes seeing lelouch hit the moment he can't contain the spiral he is in is great , the most funny but coolest way lelouch used the environment around him as well as the next one having another one of the best moments in the show the chess match and final episode with the Chinese federation and everything after that will be something i am very excited to see you cover
    Of course all the other episodes are great and will be pleased to see how you cover them
    Keep up the brilliant work and good luck

    35:00 The reason the britannians can't shoot is because of CC's geass power which makes the people around her unable to hurt her (it makes you love her I think). So since CC only used her power (shown as the mark on her forehead) after/while getting shot, now they are trying not to hurt her, and shooting Lelouch near her could hurt her. At least that's how I interpret this.
