They all seem to come with the 660M. Lenovo lists a 650M option on their spec sheet and briefing they sent us, but I haven't seen them sell that in the US.
I bought this laptop 7 and a half years ago... still using it today. This thing has been through alot and through dusty and hot environments. I oppend and cleaned around twice a year and ofc a fresh OS install. Tho 3 years ago i overtightend one scew on the back panel and i couldnt open it until yesterday : ). Me and one other friend drilled through itl to the point that the screw was on little bits. Then we hastly disassembled everything. We pretty much brute forced everything that didn't want to open. We even ripped of the monitor(it was not even needed) and as a grand finale i managed to drop the CPU on the floor... We put everything back together and it launched. It actually launched :D Never have i tought that this laptop will carry on through all of this. At the moment the notebook is running linux and it will probably carry me for many more years.
Amazing review, so many people skip over the bottom of the laptop, and the air ventilation was my most worried part of buying laptops. You even went to the added bonus of showing off the easy internal access and backlite keyboard. Thanks a lot, I buying this tonight!
I like your review of the Lenovo Ideapad Y580. I've been really contemplating purchasing this notebook to replace my current Fujitsu LIfebook. Your review is very thorough. I especially appreciate your attention to every detail you mention in your reviews which tech sensitive users like me appreciate. Keep it up.
Fan noise isn't bad at all. If you're playing a demanding 3D game you'll hear it, but otherwise it's relatively quiet and doesn't get too hot (92-95F) casing temperatures.
i have this laptop and its working very good. i am a lucky guy beacause it opens and works everyhing without a performance issue . totaly a game monster if you make the visual options right. thanks lenovo
We do have that Asus here in the US. However Asus hasn't sent us a review unit loaner and they probably won't now that it's been out more than a month.
Yes, the mSATA slot and primary HD bay both support SATA III. I bought the Y580 and this laptop is a beast...the overheating problem is waaaaaay over-exaggerated, especially if you replace the HD with an SSD. Battery life for such a powerful machine was much better than I was expecting (about 4-5 hrs).
I have a Y550p and aside from the low resolution screen and creaky body (which has certainly been approved upon in these newer models), it has been a stellar machine. When I bought it, a quad core i7 (1st gen) and GT240m were almost top of the line.
Lisa I bought this laptop on your recomendation. Wow! I still have this laptop. ive changed the hard drive for a samsung ssd. but apart from that ive had no probs. Keep up the good work
Very good for gaming. Not top of the line killer gaming rig, but it plays today's harder games at better than 30fps at native resolution. Awesome for the price.
yes. Lenovo had a tweaked version of the 555M on the Y570 so this may be a tweaked version of the 660M. These models are a fantastic deal for the money, swap in an SSD and you have an awesome laptop value. general 660M benchmarks are available on notebookcheck
I'm from the USA. I purchased the Y580 months ago and then traveled abroad with it. Someone in another country offered me more than I paid for it, so I sold it to him....and what was the laptop I purchased with the money when I got back to the USA? Another Y580. I was so pleased with it, that I bought it again. My ONLY complaint about it is that it's a little bulky and heavier than ideal...but so is the M14x. You know you have a good laptop when you buy it again and you only have 1 complaint.
I bought one of these directly from the manufacturer. I've had no problems, despite my hard drive dying after a year - most likely by my vibrating it. Other than that, I've had no problems, and would recommend it for gaming on the go - at college, away from home, that sort of thing. But honestly the i7 isn't really necessary - if you can get it with the i5, saving those few bucks is worth it. Like she said, you're not going to find anything better than a 660m in a laptop w/out spending a lot
I have a Y570 (which is a lower-end gaming laptop from Lenovo) and I have no problems with it getting hot while gaming. Based on that I think that the Y580 is pretty much the same. I think the large exhaust on the side helps with that.
Y580 keyboard is one of the best I've every used on a laptop. Good travel, little to no flex (you have to push down pretty hard to make it flex), and backlighting on the keyboard has very little bleeding. One thing I don't like is that the 'delete' and 'shift' keys are a little smaller on the right-hand side of the keyboard. Also, the spacebar is only half lit, but would prefer that it be fully lit, but if you look at other backlit keyboards on laptops, the spacebar is typically not lit either.
It's entirely possible. The SSD you would want to look for is called an mSATA SSD, which differs from a normal SSD in that it is just a circuit board with no casing on the drive. The sizes among these are standardized. I recommend the Kingston mS100 (search on Amazon). You might have to do some setup as well, if you're having trouble just type "set up msata cache" into Google.
It should last that, if even longer. The hardware is top-notch for this price range, and is not likely to be outdated by other laptops of the same price for a while. As far as I can see, this is a brilliant laptop.
When you said "...CAD stuff, engineering work..." I almost shed a tear. It's rare you hear anything other then gaming and photoshop in terms of performance in reviews. Thank you!
The Y500 with the GT 750M. It's more powerful than the 660M and that particular GPU with GDDR5 may even match a 670M. You can also get one with a 2nd 750M. That is an absolute BEAST! If you wanna game in 1080p, I strongly recommend the SLI model.
Make sure your application is using the GTX660m graphics and not the HD4000. You can usually set it by right clicking on your app and look for the option to switch the GPU it will use.
I had the Envy 15 for a little bit and ended up returning it. I liked the Y580 better. Better sound, better keyboard, and accurately displays reds. The Envy uses an IPS panel, but can't reproduce colors (i.e. reds look orange) while the Y580 can (Y580 covers 91% of sRGB), which is good for photo and video editing.
Well, lenovo has a pretty good track record as far as durability goes. I've had a y580 for about half a year now and it's still working just like it did when i bought it. Definitely worth the money imho.
I love this laptop. It's a solid monster for my casual gaming needs (not as hardcore as I use to be now that I have a little one) I also just bought a Notepal x3 from Coolmaster.. as it does get a little warm after a few hours.. obviously 99% of laptops do. My only gripe so far.. has been the SUPER SAIYAN GLOSSY screen. Wish Lenovo gave us the option to choose Matte screens. I live in Florida.. where it is near sunshine 360 days of the year. (80 degrees in Dec and Jan for crying out loud)
If you go to the Nvidia site, you can see the GPU performance in relativity to Intel HD 4000 Graphics. Any dedicated graphics card will perform better than integrated graphics (can't say always, but I haven't found otherwise). For what it's worth, the same graphics card in this laptop is in the Alienware X51 mini gaming desktop.
Well, if you have time to spare, would you mind comparing the two? I mean the S 13.3 and the Lenovo Y580. I'm sure comparing a 13 to a 15 inch is not daily routine, but it would shed light on the whole portability vs performance discussion.
That's fantastic, great news to hear. It's in the mail. Thanks for taking the time to respond. One last question. Does the integrated webcam also have a microphone?
Sorry if my replies are too long.. but I just can't compliment this laptop enough. It's definitely my favorite toy out of all the other entertainment tech I have. The best thing is I use this for work and disguise my nerdom.. something I wouldn't have been able to do if I lugged around an Alienware or an Asus ROGs. Cheers to Lenovo for making a fine product!
The NVIDIA GPU starts when you launch a program that is on a list created by NVIDIA such as a game. You can MODIFY that list if the program isn't on it. Browsing the Internet will run on the efficient Intel GPU, then launching a game seamlessly switches to the NVidia GPU, then back again after the game closes. *I think you can have the NVidia logo show when switching so you can verify it actually works. **So if your in a normal desktop your NVidia GPU should always show as OFF.
Trading my XPS 15 in to get one of these due to extremely poor WiFi performance on the XPS. Trading in good looks, a slim housing, and some major flaws for a bulkier, less expensive, and more well rounded machine. Life, right?
Yeah I have this laptop and its amazing for gaming. I play every game on max settings with no lag. Also It does not get hot and the JBL speakers are just amazing.
I am planning to get the y500 as soon as there is a price drop. But I would love to see a review before I commit and see the pros and cons of that machine
thanks for the video, i just ordered the i5 version of this baby, for 570euro only! i allready have an SSD OCZ Agility 3 Sata 3 240GB to go in there and 8GB of Kingstone RAM 1600. hyperx only the ram costed extra 80euros, so still its a big deal! i am sure i am gona love this new baby
Is there a reasonable (in terms of weight and price) battery upgrade for this laptop? The battery life is rated pretty low. However, I do realize it is a high performance machine.
It's doesn't use an ultrabay system of any kind if that's what you're asking. I assume if you unscrewed everything you'd be able to take it out, as they offer both DVD burner and BD combo drive models in their configurations, so I doubt it's built right in to the casing or anything.
How does it do in the video rendering department, and the like? It seems like there are cards more geared towards rendering and cards more geared towards gaming, and it seems like they will all do pretty well at pretty much whatever you give them, so long as they have good hardware, but I was just curious. Although either way, it's gonna do 10x better than my current rig, that's for sure.
the problem with the n56vz is that the video card uses ddr3 instead of gddr5, both great laptops though. the n56vz is slimmer, lighter, and more stylish. So if power is more important to you, go y580, but if style is more important, go n56vz
I think its a more all round option. You give up the sli 650's for a lesser 660m. This means worse fps but better battery life, especially because you can switch to intel hd 4000. Also, it is less of the flashy bright red lights, and more of a minimalist look better for school, public etc.
The specs are great for the price but I really wish Lenovo would step up their designs. I know this is mostly a quality of life thing but slot load drives, flush ports and a matte finish would make this thing so much more appealing.
Even on maximum settings it still handles pretty nicely, I had gotten a nice 60FPS on everything high in Dishonored, but my model isn't the 1080p one, so the lower resolution may have been a factor, but still.
ok thanks. Just subbed cause u have gameplay of MoH Warfighter on that laptop ;) Do u think i could customize the specs good enough on the ThinkPad Edge to meet this laptop? I like the features on the thinkpad edge better. Or just get this one?
Any idea why this laptop was discontinued? i know the replacement is the Y500 with optional dual 650's but also more pricey. this one seems like a better all rounder?
Oh, btw, how do the integrated graphics perform? Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, I talked about rendering, etc, but isn't that actually more on the processor than the GPU? I'm not too familiar with the technical aspects, I just kinda do what I have to do. :)

its just fairly big and i dont want to get it banged around as it is my desktop, but it is well built and solid, more than a macbook or anything you should be fine
I have two questions. Is the SSD used as the boot drive or is the operating system on the slow 5400 rpm drive? Also the SSD looked odd in the video. Can it be changed out with another drive like a Intel 320 or 510? Thanks
They all seem to come with the 660M. Lenovo lists a 650M option on their spec sheet and briefing they sent us, but I haven't seen them sell that in the US.

As a matter of fact, the Acer Aspire S5 is up next after we post the Y580 gaming video.

i recommend the y580, and i used to live in costa rica, grecia. y580 is nice, has served me VERY well now for about 5 months

I have had this laptop since last august now and its amazing! It does get a little warm but I haven't gamed long enough for it to do damage...
ordered it today, can't wait to get it next week!
I just got myself one of this Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 and it is freaking AWESOME!!!The amount of bang for yo' buck is spectacular!
Thanks for the review, I've been waiting for this!
660M overclocks very well, and if you get a laptop cooler for $30 you can overclock it to the point it matches the base 670M without any issue.
Definitely. It can run Crysis 3 at Low-Medium settings at a very respectable frame rate.
I would really recommend this laptop!
Y580 keyboard is one of the best I've every used on a laptop. Keep up the good work!

I ordered this computer quite a while ago. It's finally shipping to my house. Should be here by Thursday! :D
for the specs and price and screen resolution this is the best deal on the planet and destroys laptops worth way more as well!
incredible value for the money. I usually dont like the IdeaPads so much but this is a excellent laptop
WAITING FOR THIS SINCE FOREVER!!!

Hi Lisa, I just bought this laptop and I was wondering if a 256gb SSD would be a good upgrade from the 1TB 5400rpm. Thanks, and great review.
Sometimes adjusting the hardware acceleration setting downward will make older games run better.
Well, if you have time to spare, would you mind comparing the two?

I doubt it. The only two IdeaPads on BestBuy's website are low end N series' laptops.

Lisa does the keyboard get pretty hot during gaming? That's the big complaint I've heard.
well i understand that, but what i meant is whether Asus and Lenovo are like HP and Compaq ?
Apparently, every year or so, they make a newer model as the successor and discontinue the previous one. The new one is called Y500.
the Y580 looks great I wanna buy it,what about the track pad is it good for the windows 8 or wait for new powerful notebook for windows8 ?
I am not a design student but I know that the screen does cover 91 percent of the sRGB spectrum. Refer to the Y580 review on Notebookcheck.
The specs are great for the price but I really wish Lenovo would step up their designs. I know this is mostly a quality of life thing but slot load drives, flush ports and a matte finish would make this thing so much more appealing.

There is a diffrence between GT and GTX, its a GTX not a GT, thanks for the review its awesome as always ^^
glad to hear it, i hope its treating you well?

How is the fan noise and heat?
My question is considering situations in general use for browsing the web and Flash players like RUclips.

Viewing angles are very wide, similar to IPS. I'd bet this is IPS.
why do laptops still offer VGA ports? isn't HDMI better? most monitors have hdmi
what about the fan noise? its important
Great review I want a good laptop which one is better between Lenovo Y580 and Toshiba Satellite P850 plzzzzzzzzz help.
are you sure you dont want a macbook pro for 1699$ with a dual core and integrated intel graphics?
ALright so this computer (y580) or the hp dv6000? Which one would you choose?
ok..how long do you think this gaming laptop will support future games ?? is it around 3 years ??
What do you mean discontinued?
HP Envy 15 (3040nr) , Lenovo Y580 , Lenovo Y500
which one would you pick for mostly 3D programs and gaming ?
Is still running fine? No problems ?
sounds like you got a blacksheep. I would send it in to lenovo support.
but will it blend?
Style is nice to look at. But at the end of the day I want what counts what's inside. This is a animal for the price.
DId you say this laptop comes with the gtx 660m graphics card? I think i heard gt 660, idk if you meant gt 650 or gtx 660m. Thanks.
I have two questions. Is the SSD used as the boot drive or is the operating system on the slow 5400 rpm drive? Also the SSD looked odd in the video. Can it be changed out with another drive like a Intel 320 or 510? Thanks
