One of Grant's last major projects is his animatronic "Baby Yoda," a collaboration with prop artisan Lauren Markland and costumer Lindsay Hamilton. Lauren explains to Adam Savage how she and Grant built this "happiness maker" (in just three months!), as well as Grant's intentions behind his Grogu replica's ultimate use.

Can we also get the same grogu? 🥺
69 likes dang, I can't add to it.
He was such a nice person and a great man. Never heard a single nasty thing said about him in the media. None of the Mythbuster’s for that matter. But it’s just another example of how much we need to really treasure our lives and our friends, anyone of us can be gone any minute or day. RIP
A neighbor of mine lost his wife a month or so ago, just tragic, she was only 28. I don’t know what happened, I didn’t ask him it’s not my business, he could tell me himself if he wanted to. I just told him how sad and sorry I was and I and we my other cool neighbors had his back and not to hesitate to ask for help. She was a sweet, beautiful and kind young lady, such a shame.
It really touches my heart to see Grant now doing what drove him.
I'm donating and helping to spread the awareness of the Grant Imahara Foundation. Mythbusters -- and ESPECIALLY Grant (cuz I'm a robotics nerd) -- inspired me to dare mighty things, to be curious, and to keep learning and creating through my life. Thank you to Adam, Jamie, Kari, Grant, Tory, and Scottie, and everyone else behind the scenes, for helping to inspire me to become who I am today. You helped to change my life.
Grant's legacy shall live forever.
Yes it shall. 🍻
This Is The Way

The fact that he was going to bring this to a children's hospitals makes me smile. Can you guys still do that please :)?
This. I spent a lot of time in Boston Children's Hospital as a kid. I would have loved if Old Yoda was brought in.
@@seanj3667 I third this motion and demand a vote!
Grant would want that to still happen.
ABSOLUTELY
they finished the project, to not see the goal of the project through to its main purpose would just be a big fuck you to grant. i cant imagine that this grogu wont be brought to any children's hospitals.
“Collaborated on this beautiful child” - I want to hear parents talk about their children this way.
"We smashed like crazy and then came the unfortunate suprise"
Well, it wasn’t easy. We went through a LOT of iterations… me on top… her on top… reverse…
…and the ANGLES ! Oh, so many angles!
Lot of sleepless nights, I tell you!
I want parents to start being honest, like "we collaborated on that horrible little sugar goblin, and we love him so much!", cause children are awful, but parents should still like to be around them.
The word "parents" will soon be abolished, like "mother" and "father".
It will be replaced by something like "birthing partners" or "reproduction team".
Beautifically anamotronics. A Gem of beauty. Thanks Grant.
Lauren's "you know how he is" and look to Adam was just so sweet. It's clear that they loved and cared about Grant so much.
Not gonna lie. That present-tense reference got me a little.
Two people still trying to grapple with the fact that their friend is gone...
Its so sad. So sudden. Such a good heart
That really hit me. 1 sec he was, and the next he wasn't. I still can't take what happened with him.
That last shot hit me right in the feels!
I wasn't ready for that.
@@braedan51 me either. Right in the feels
Oh geez. I read your comment before I saw it. Ugh. Made me choke a little. RIP Grant.
Yeah, they really went for the tear ducts with that one :')
Hard bro 😢
Seeing grants filing system mimic Jamie's from mythbusters is just great to see.
In a previous episode when Adam was touring the shop, he was told that Grant did this because he was trying to get a show shot there, so he was adding lots of aesthetic things like the filing system in the hopes it would be shot there. (it didn't)
Yeah, they said he made a lot of design choices in hopes that he could use the shop as a shoot location for White Rabbit Project.
in a way, they are shooting in his shop now!
@@ToddTevlin he was trying to get white rabbit project shot there
The smile on Grant's face in the last clip, is that of a father seeing his newborn child for the first time. He sure was proud, and he had the right to be.
I often think of future things he would have made, he was a world treasure and will be missed for a long time. 😇
"you know how he is". This is how you now Grant has touched so many lives.
"He's quite cute, with or without skin"
Wish someone would describe me that way
Well we need to see to know forsure. 🔪
👁👄👁
Cmere
Why?
I have this friend named Buffalo Bill....
You're quite cute, with or without skin.
You ARE cute, you smell great, and you've got great taste in shoes.
We lost a beautiful soul in Grant. It's nice to see his legacy live on thru the lives he touched.
Still broken over losing Grant so young, but his legacy lives on.
Grant death really got me every single time i remember it , he was more than a human , he was an idol , with lots of good ideals
Grant was 49 years old when he died. That's not exactly "so young".
@@bobbydazzler6990 I can't express in words the extent to which you can F off for that comment.
@@BackwardGalaxy How are those therapy sessions for your anger management issues coming along? You haven't been going? Oh, I'm not surprised. ALSO: Grant Imihara is still dead and fewer people care about his life with each day that passes. He was a mediocre TV personality and now he's fading from the public's memory.
@@bobbydazzler6990 49 is like half of a lifetime at this point and a ton of people who loved him on mythbusters don't even realize he's dead still so there's still constantly new people mourning his death years after which is more than can be said about what will happen once you're dead. Him and the entire crew inspired an entire generation of engineers and helped bring the world of robotics to more young people, the reason there's so much interest in that kind of stuff with young people now is largely because of him helping bring it out of the shadows of something only for the nerds. His legacy will survive decades to come through that inspiration and through the magic of tv he's still around to continue inspiring people for years to come
I can't believe they pulled off that massive feat of engineering in only 3 months, it's far beyond impressive.
This. Especially with a bunch of first time processes.
Can you imagine how valuable these two people would be to a film production crew? Practical effects like this are much more believable on film than CGI. As a team, they'd be worth quite a bit of money to create something like this in such a short time-frame.
The way it falls asleep and suddenly wakes up. And it almost seems it has tactic sensors because when adam touches it, the baby seems to wake up. Its crazy. How realistic it is. SILENT SERVOS would make it perfect. Its absolutely amazing.
Yep, silent servos is the real trick. Direct drive with twisted string tendons?
Or if no silent servos. Have it make an audible breath or some other sound to sort of mask the servos sound.
@@SeohnAranys Been trying to figure out silent servos for more than a decade. Softbotics and tiny valves? Hydraulics and tiny pumps? Most of the expression is in the eyes and eyelids. Been looking at tiny LCDs and OLED too.
He interviewed me once for a robotics show on Discovery. I was struck by how genuinely nice he was off camera and curious how I had accomplished this or that and what method I had used to solve building my bot. Really cool guy.
You are a very fortunate person to have met Grant in person and to have had a discussion about robotics. I would say that many of us fan's of Grant envy your good fortune. I say envy, but not in the jealous kind of manner. Anyone got a more suitable word?
Mark from Melbourne Australia.
@@markfryer9880 I think the turn of phrase you are looking for might be "... wish we had had the same wonderful opportunity."
what method did you use?
Holding back tears because no matter how much we miss him. His family and friends must miss him that much more. NO TEARS@!
It's ok to cry. It's healthy, normal and natural to cry for the ones you've lost. Don't hold in the pain you feel. Let those around you know you're in pain, that's what tears do when you don't have the words.
@@idontwanttopickone I think the point here is that we lost an icon but the family lost a hero.
Icons come and go [although Grant was and still is nearly irreplaceable (for the fans)] Heroes, Real Life Heroes are forever.
Imagine being a kid going to a school and hearing "ohh your dad was..."
It's really dusty in my office. And someone decided to chop onions in here.
Rip, Grant. I loved watching you.
People don't realize how much the world lost when Grant passed.
Some of us do...
Did he ever mention what his greatest ambitions were? Or do we not even have a glimpse? He is a truly impressive person.
Oh a guy who made movie props? Is there a big shortage of guys who make movie props?? 🤡🤡🤡
@@bobbydazzler6990you’re weird……
The quote at 9:10 _"Even if you don't have confidence, believe in yourself - because somebody else does, and the people who care about you will believe in you no matter what."_ is SUCH an impactful message.
Even if things don't turn out how you imagine, everything you do is always a step along the way towards realization of what you want to do. It's especially true when the work you do is something that you love and it's a part of making someone else smile or making the world a kinder place. It's that sort of infectious enthusiasm that I always think of when seeing anything about Grant, so the encapsulation of those ideas just warms my heart.
Thanks as always to you for sharing these. They mean the world.
"Whether you believe you CAN or CANNOT, YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY 100% CORRECT"!!!!
Seeing "Grant Imahara" pop up on my notifis is the best birthday gift
Happy birthday. Hope it's a good one.
I hope you have a happy birthday Internet stranger =]
Happy birthday,
@@tested Thank you! And to everyone else too!
The way Adam's voice breaks when he says "I'm in Grant Imahara's shop" literally made me cry.
And holding back around the 9-10 minute mark, I felt that.
Grant was an amazing fabricator. And from what I hear an amazing and genuine person. He his truly missed. Thanks for sharing his legacy.
3 months!?
Perhaps the ultimate prop. Astounding work with amazing results.
The short video at the end of Grant looking so proud...all the feels. ♥
OMG it's Sooo Cute.
Nice to hear her still speak of Grant in the present tense.
The blinking is so incredibly lifelike! What a masterpiece of robotics. Grant was one of the best in his craft, it’s such a heartache he’s gone.
This makes me love Grogu even more! I would also love to know about Grants R2, and BB units.
Stay tuned; videos on those forthcoming.
@@tested Excellent 👍
Just realised that Grant could never have learned that his name was Grogu, unless he had insider knowledge.
As much as I enjoy all the Adam Savage’s Tested videos, this is my favorite...and it's not even close. RIP Grant, we all miss you.
“You know how he is.” Got me. Time stamp 3:25. He lives on in his works and his personality. I genuinely wish I could have met him. Thank you for sharing his life with us Mr Savage.
Its been a year, but in 5 years we will still find ourselves talking about Grant and the things he did and the lives that he touched
Meh. The number of people who remember Grant Imihara is dwindling every day. In three decades, every person who worked with him will be dead. Grant's name will only be remembeerd by Wikipedia (if that survives 30 years).
You only die when you're forgotten. Grant's name shall live forever alongside the big names like Frank Oz and all the incredible team behind all the magic, puppets, and practical designs of Star Wars, and so many other franchises. And of course: Mythbusters. A generation of children across the globe got interested in STEM because of Grant, Adam and the gang.
@@IceSpoon You're delusional. Ten years from now, Grant will be almost completely forgotten. As soon as the last Mythbuster dies, Grant's name will be completely discarded.
@@bobbydazzler6990 you said the same earlier. Thanks
@@bobbydazzler6990 lmfao I dunno what grant did to hurt your feelings so much but even in 30 years I wouldn't expect them to be dead, like even Adam would only be 85 by then which is relatively early for people with money to die at this point that's not to mention the countless people who got started in their careers because of him, just because you don't like him doesn't mean others like them won't remember, I can confidently say I'll remember him in more than 30 years, he was part of my childhood even though I never personally knew him
The last few seconds of Grant and the puppet almost brought tears to my eyes.
It's a bit like some of Grant lives on in the puppet and his smile as he looks down is saying "look for me in the baby".
I can't imagine how much of an emotional rollercoaster making this series must have been for you. Having experienced a few loved ones passing away, it's tearing you apart, and I never needed to go through their life's work with a camera pointed at me. Thank you for doing this, the videos are amazing. 💗
Thank you Grant, Adam & all the team. You’ll always be my heroes - you’ll never actually realise how much you affected and inspired so many across the world.
damn the last few second really hit hard really feel like he is a proud dad showing his baby to the world.
Seeing and hearing Adam's reactions you can tell how big of a friend Grant was, may his soul rest peace.
Even now grant is still making me inspired and laugh. "Do you want to help me make a Darth Vader cowboy hat" that is the most..Grant thing I could think he'd want to make..rest in peace you magnificent mad scientist and thanks for inspiring my childhood with Adam and crew.
Grant is one of the people who inspired me to become an electronics technician. I loved watching all the MythBusters episodes but I particularly enjoyed the ones that Grant was in. RIP Grant
Hi Adam,
Even here in Australia we who watched Myth Busters and bought you all to our homes each week, we viewed all of the Myth Busters crew as friends whom gave us a perspective of what the real world was. To hear that one of the most loved people in the series passed away, was a tragic loss for us as well. The ‘calculator guy’ whom some of us nicknamed Grant, when Grant joined Myth Busters, due to the scientific calculator Grant used, was a pleasant surprise as some of us have and have used a scientific calculator as some time in the past. To see his legacy continue brings some joy and happiness and his latest work is no exception to the brilliant man Grant was.
Keep going guys, Grant will live in our hearts and minds forever.
Aaand now I'm smile-crying into my breakfast... What a beautiful, wonderful soul the world had in Grant Imahara. Everything from his advice and attitude to other creators, to the fact that this whole project and all the work Lauren, Lindsay and he put into it was made entirely just so that kids in hospital could meet a real Grogu, there is so much love and warmth of spirit in every part of this work. As sad as it is that he's gone, I have nothing but gratitude that he was here and gave so much to so many people.
Wowsers, talk about heart in the throat with that last clip of Grant. Thanks so much for allowing us to spend some time with him! If not for Mythbusters, we may never have had the chance to experience his brilliance and whimsy, even cut far too short.
Grant was always my favorite of the build team
It's gorgeous and such a beautiful project, I love it. I hope Grogu gets to go bring some kids joy in honor of Grant. Edit to add that the clip of Grant at the end killed me. Just gonna go try not to cry haha
Grant Imahara ,great work, great person. Miss you, RIP
Not me crying at the video of grant at the end. These get me everytime. He will forever have an impact on my love for science and engineering.
Yeah I cried at that last scene with Grant. Thank you for posting this!
Missing Grant so much. Thanks for this.
11:53 Just wanna see Grant's smile :) so calming and heartwarming. Who isn't missing that guy... honestly.
This animatronic Grogu has Grant Imahara's fingerprints all over it.
Absolutely brilliant, and sorely missed.
Not gonna lie, that last shot with Grant made me burst into tears.
Same!
OMG... I don't know if I can watch this whole thing without tears. That pic of Grant and Grogu... man...
Grant's creativity never ceases to amaze me, RIP.
The fact that Grant learned Maya for this build in a few months shows his determination. Not only did he learn modelling, but he went for the no short cuts approach for the best results. CAD is not as easy as some might think.
i use 3d max and maya is like a different approach in some respects. close but different in some respects. but he did a great job. hands down. an understatement in fairness. shame hes not around as he did fantastic work
This was a touching video. Grant was always a pleasure to watch work, and it was cruel to loose him so young. I'm glad to see him remembered.
The underlying message in this video is extremely powerful. It put into words this unformed Idea I have had swirling in my head for years about the reasons why I like building things and collecting unusual items. the statement about bringing whimsey into the world and making others happy. I think that is the key I've been looking for. I feel like the lens just came into focus. Thank you Grant! You will be remembered for the influence you have made on the maker community, and thank you Adam for sharing all these candid videos with us. Lauren, I am just learning about you but I hope to see more of what you do in the future. From all us basement makers out there, Thank you!!
It’s hard not to tear up. Grant was such a wonderful person and truly kind hearted, he will be missed very much
Man what an amazing animatronic
This video made me cry. I was fine up until the very end when they showed Grant wearing the carrier with the doll in it. He looked like a proud father and I just lost it.
The clip of Grant at the end, you can see he is trying to be a pro about it but that "Proud Papa" grin/smile keeps escaping. Beautiful work Grant.
Wow, Lauren is absolutely brilliant. I would love to see more from her.
GOt to admit. i got. bit choked up. Such an amazing soul. so glad to have met him and talked to him. What an amazing build.
The more I learn about Grant the more I love and respect him and the work he did.
Still sad Grant is no longer with us....what a tremendous human being. Donated.
Thank you.
Wow. Grant was a gentle genius x
Wow - you took me by surprise, (made a grown man shed a tear). Thanks so much Adam. Wonderful idea to see Grant's shop and project.
I'm glad someone is Keeping his memory alive and doing what he did to keep him in every ones memory. His work like many others of that lvl, will forever remain legendary as one of the great makers in that field. And that baby yoda shows just how much skill, talent, and the level of robotics he was a master of. He will be missed, but never forgotten.
We all lost Grant way too soon, but we're fortunate to have been around to see the amazing creations and energy he put into the world. The whole mythbusters team helped inspire me to be curious and to create things, but perhaps none more than Grant.
Such an inspiring lady. I can only imagine the full team.
I'm am so happy to know that Grant had a chance to pass some of his knowledge. To think that all of his techniques, knowledge, and experience may have been lost to the void for our communities would leave another hole in my heart and mind.
Rest easy Grant. I grew up watching mythbusters with my dad and sister. Thanks for the memories.
This video brings me so much joy. Seeing Adam handling something so adorable that Grant helped build gives me the feels.
then, that last clip.
That very last shot did me in. Grant was an absolute treasure. 💯
Really a great project. Lots of work. For people with faith Grant isn't gone but those without, memory can be very powerful. As long as we don't forget them, they live on.
This whole video is a basket of emotions. Adam playing with the hands is 😮😍☺️
Great way to bring back the joy Grant gave me as a kid watching Myth busters...except it's more of a "How it's built" which is awesome btw.
Seeing grant at the ending looking so happy and proud of his accomplishments was so beautiful, he will live on in all our hearts for the rest of time, he was truly a man of genius.
As much as I love videos like this, it seems to always tear open the wound that he is no longer with us. Grant was such a special person, and I can only imagine the bitter sweet joy Adam is having in these videos.
Big grin on my face and tears in my eyes! Thank you Grant Imahara!
Rip Grant. I'm so sorry you left us, but I'm so glad the story at large took mercy on you and let you slip away quietly, free from the battle to come and the trials that will bring
That build is so impressive. The amount of art and design fused together is amazing. Absolute master class!
Grant♥️ I swear he made you feel like you knew him through the tv screen. He'll be remembered wonderfully for years to come, and his legacy will live on forever
Thanks Adam and crew for sharing this must of been tough making this a bit. Being that you and Grant worked together Mythbusters and in Star Wars in the past. Then getting to talk about Grants last project. Hope this project gets to visit some kids hospitals.
The end, I'm in tears. Thanks for sharing this.
Grant's last hoorah! That's amazing. Grant did great work on him.
I had no idea Grant had his fingers in so many pies! I just watched the battle bot episode and had no idea about that either. I love these videos because they have introduced me to a whole new Grant. Thank you for sharing.
Something brought me to this video, I needed to hear advice from Grant. There's beauty in wanting to make others smile, the people that love you will believe in you, so believe in yourself and try no matter the circumstances
Lauren and Grant created a masterpiece! Really inspired work and an amazing story. Grant left this world too soon
Grant's an awesome dude.... Watched him a lot back in the days...
Wonderful, wonderful ending guys. Well edited. Grant will forever be missed, but will live on in his creations.
As a Project 842 Yoda builder this was amazing to see. Thank you!
Miss Grant! That dude was inspiring! So blessed to see his legacy and wisdom live on!
Grant didn’t just put all he had into his work, he did it with care and diligence as any “parent” should! Makes me wanna go back and rewatch Mythbusters and The White Rabbit Project all over again.
"You know how he is..." 😭 That did me in.
Even with someone you've never met, it's still very sad.
Thank you Adam and your crew for sharing these moments in Grant’s shop. We all miss Grant Imahara.
I think it's beautiful that you are going through some of Grant's projects this way. Thanks.
As long as we remeber him, he will never truly die.
All that he has left behind has made sure we will.
I held it together through grants workshop tour, and this video but the clip at the end of him got me. 😭
I smiled the whole way through this. Until the end. Crying. Grant was one in a million. Amazing work!
How awesome would it have been to have seen this conversation take place between between Adam and Grant.
Grant truely never forgotten through his work and connection , if the children’s a hospital even finished up with this is like to see it on the Lucas archives so it’s forever preserved
Beautiful work...I miss Grant so much 😢
This is just amazing. I'm so glad I got the pleasure of watching Grant on Mythbusters. And to see how talented he was, was just astounding. He was a great guy and hopefully his legacy will live on through this little guy.
