Simon Goh, Director of Facilities, Zenni Optical:
“In my opinion, anyone wearing eyeglasses is our customer. Zenni offers very good quality eyeglasses, prescription eyeglasses, at a very, very good price. We are selling about 6 to 7 million pairs of eyeglasses a year and we are growing at about 15 to 20% a year.
So at the very beginning, we looked at this shipping process. We determined to automate the whole entire process. We even thought of doing some kind of robot automation ourself. After we looked at how complicated the whole thing is, I mean, I was just like, it’s just impossible to do it without a professional company like OSARO.”
Gemma Ross, Vice President of Operations, OSARO:
“OSARO is in the warehouse automation space, and we're really focused on some key use case areas like kitting, depalletization, and robotic bagging. There are unique challenges to every customer, and one of the ones that we had with the Zenni project was to scan their barcodes through their eyeglasses cases.
In each of the three cells, the robot picks up the eyeglasses that are in the Zenni-branded eyeglasses case. Scans that barcode through the case that's unique to each eyeglass’s order, and then places that case into the automated bagging machine, which seals that and then ships it off to the customer.
Cognex proved to be incredibly effective and very fast at capturing those barcodes through the cases.”
Simon:
“The scanning part is crucial when it comes to the throughput. When this solution was proposed, OSARO said the robot can scan through the case, and I was kind of worried about that. To me, right, we tried to use other scanners to scan through the case and the result was not that good. Once OSARO brought in the Cognex scanner, the scanning part was the least of our concern.”
Gemma:
“We tested multiple different solutions from different vendors and we ended up landing on Cognex just because it was the most accurate and fast. The Cognex scanners just work. It's a reliable part of our system, and it gives us the confidence that we'll be able to scan those barcodes so that we can deliver to our customer quickly and accurately.
One of the most important things for my team out in the field is making sure our technology is easy to use. So that's why we landed on Cognex for the Zenni solution. It delivers fast and accurate barcode reads so that Zenni’s customers end up getting their eyeglasses as quickly as possible.”
Simon:
“We always try to get to the 100% accuracy, and that is very difficult. 6 million pair of eyeglasses a year. And then even though the percentage was really low before, but still we are seeing about 20 to 30 orders that goes to the wrong customer. With robot, we actually achieve 100% accuracy. The OSARO robotics system has yielded an 80% increase in throughput.”
