And yet eleven and a half years later, they accepted a deal to take someone else's team from them. Who knows how things would be different if the Colts had stayed in Baltimore? Perhaps, if they had left the history of the Colts and the name in Baltimore, there wouldn't be a Ravens franchise there.
WRONG. Try educating yourself on the details. Irsay bought the Colts from Rosenbloom, and ran the team into the ground. He alienated the fans . He was considered the worst owner in sports. He was going to move the team regardless. He was shopping the team to cities desperate to get into the NFL>Eminent Domain was a last ditch effort to stop the inevitable move.
Blue Skeptic trapping him? Cities shouldn't raise taxes to pay for sports stadiums for billionaires. I'm a die hard sports fan and even I see the economic idiocy there
Charles Shettle ...actually, Irsay was allowed to acquire the Rams in a behind the scenes deal that cut the legs out from under Hugh Culverhouse. Then the NFL allowed Irsay & Rosenbloom to swap franchises. Culverhouse threatened to sue the NFL and was awarded the Tampa franchise to make up for it.
Indianapolis Colts fan here. I definitely understand the hatred the people of Baltimore feel for Robert Irsay. The guy was a drunk and was a garbage owner who never put a good team on the field here in Indy. When he died his son took over and hired the right people and got out of the way for the most part. I also feel the Colts name should have stayed in Baltimore. But, government officials in Baltimore are partially to blame for the Colts leaving. Memorial Stadium was falling apart for years and the previous Colts owner tried to negotiate with the city. He got sick of dealing with it and traded the Colts for the Rams. I think Irsay did Baltimore dirty with HOW he moved the team but Baltimore could have prevented this from happening and a lot of the comments here don't mention that at all 🤔
They were threatening to leave over 4 years the city did nothing to make things better. They had to pay the Orioles rent and share their revenue with them and the Orioles didn't have to share nothing with the Colts. I don't blame them for leaving at all the city had time to make things better and they didn't so the Colts left.
There is a good doc on Disney plus about the move. And the colts band getting screwed. But yeah. The colts were cowards for leaving like they did. Especially over night with out giving the town any notice. The Band was lucky to get there uniforms back because they were at the cleaners lol. So they hid them in a cemetery and hid them in a mausoleum. Lol. Later on the Baltimore Ravens were nice enough to allow the band to play for them all these years later. They got new uniforms and everything.
Baltimore and Cleveland share one thing in common, they both had heartbreaking relocations. But the difference between them is that Baltimore was nice enough to give Cleveland their history and name back, but Baltimore didn't get the same treatment. Indianapolis rarely, if ever, acknowledges their past and it's sad if you ask me. If Peyton Manning was never drafted by the Indianapolis Colts they would have been one of the most irrelevant, unsuccessful franchises in NFL history. The city of Baltimore definitely made the Ravens their own, but deep down I think lots of older fans wish they had just been the Colts the whole time. Johnny Unitas is a football legend and he was the face of that city, arguably that entire state too and he sounded the most disappointed by that whole scandal.
Not quite. We had to sue the League and Baltimore for that. Everything was slated to go. EVERYTHING. While those overbreeding defiling thieves have two trophies built on our blood, sweat & tears, all we have are 20 years--TWENTY YEARS--of agony, shame and disappointment. We will NEVER forgive this. EVER.
It's a completely messed up situation, Cleveland never got any sort of redemption for what happened either. If there is any team in pro sports that deserves a championship, it's the Browns.
If the state had built a new stadium, instead of trying to sieze control of a private citizens property, like they'd promised Baltimore would still have the Colts. I'm sure the Colts would rather just pretend it never happened and that they were in Indiana from inception, where they have top tier facilities, raving fans, and plenty of money. After all, people tend to forget that the team snuck to the border of Maryland in the dead of night, out of fear of being arrested by Maryland State Police, and were escorted by Indiana State Police to their new home in Indianapolis.
They do. They're just called the Indianapolis Colts instead. And at least Baltimore ended up with the Ravens, who have been more successful than the Indy Colts. At the expense of the original Browns of course, but you see my point. This should have been done with an announcement, but can't blame the relocation though. Memorial Stadium was falling apart and the city was cheap and wouldn't dig into their pockets for a new stadium or any serious renovation. Irsay had no choice. Baltimore is lucky they still have the O's for the same reason.
As much as i loved the Baltimore Colts. They were playing in an outdated relic of a stadium. The City of Baltimore & The State of Maryland representatives thought Irsay was talking out his rear end. Well that swift kick in the rear was Irsay's midnight exodus. Yes it was sad what he did. But it took that painful lesson to bring Camden Yards to existence .
I don't blame Irsay for leaving Baltimore, they had every chance to keep them in Baltimore and the city did not step up. Memorial stadium was a dump. Things were moving forward in the NFL and teams were getting new stadiums and financial support from cities they resided in.
I'm a Baltimore fan(from Pennsylvania) but get your facts straight. The move was 20 years in the making. Both the Orioles and Colts were disguised with Memorial Stadium as far back as the 60's. When Baltimore became aware of the complaints they proposed to build a multipurpose dome similar to the Astrodome in Houston, down where the current stadiums are now. However they soon withdrew the plan on the excuse that they didn't have the money and wouldn't replace what they considered a memorial to fallen soldiers (facade of Memorial Stadium) A 1972 study of Memorial Stadium sided with the owners. No skyboxes, obstructed views, poor location, poor plumbing, parking and concessions under control of the Orioles even for Colts games, the 2 p.m. kickoffs, and the horseshoe shaped bowl (took fans sitting on the 50 yard line away from the action) were among issues addressed. Yet Baltimore made little, if any effort, to remodel and upgrade the stadium. Threats of relocation came from both the Colts and Orioles shortly after this with the Colts being sold to Robert Irsay in 1972 and the Orioles to Edward Williams in 1979. Talks between the owners and the city produced little results and never mentioned a new stadium for either team. Even in 1984 the mayor made it known a new stadium wasn't going to be built. Once the Colts left the fear of the Orioles relocating to Washington D.C. (where Williams had his law office) became very real and the need for a new stadium to save the Orioles became a top priority. Even then Annapolis was slow to pass a bill to fund a stadium. It was only the smart thinking of the Colts marching band playing at the State House that the new stadium, now known as Camden Yards, passed. Baltimore treated the owners like crap and paid the price. Not siding with the Colts but holding Baltimore responsible for their actions. They're lucky they have teams today.
So they treated the owners like crap by not having the taxpayers foot the bill on a stadium for a couple billionaires? Why didnt they offer to pay when baltinore said it didnt have the cash? Huh? Seems like they tried to treat the taxpayers like shit not the other way around.
@@robkrieg8301 you missed the part where he said the city did nothing to address complaints over Memorial Stadium. It was a very flawed stadium and obsolete as early as the 60s. As far as Irsay, he's trash. Stolen valor.
@@hellman9655 you must not have read my comment correctly. I never said memorial stadium wasn't a bad stadium nor did I say the city tried to cooperate for a new stadium. Well, Baltimore. You First Rejected Irsay's Demand for a New Stadium and then passed a Measure denying that chance, You then tried to Take the Colts Away from Irsay which forced him to make the move to Indianpolis. If You Hadn't Screwed Over Your Own Damn Team and Just Gave Them a New Stadium and Not Threaten to Take That Team Away, I'll Betcha The Colts would still be in Baltimore. But Hey You've Learned and Got the Ravens (Although You Had To Take That Team From Cleveland).
12 years tearing apart a team and fielding one of the league's worst defenses ever. 0-8-1 and 2-14 seasons. Trading away Johnny Unitas, Irsay calling plays from the press box. It was a joke. Do not get me wrong, the Maryland state government also dropped the ball, but Irsay was a crummy owner who shopped around the franchise playing pre-season games in Phoenix and Jacksonville. I lived through it and am well versed on this. The city of Baltimore also takes some blame for the 2pm starts to accommodate local churches in the residential area where Memorial Stadium was located.
Cleveland was guaranteed a franchise by the NFL within a few years with their original colors and history. The city of Baltimore had no such guarantee.
@Montana Roots Cleveland was also able to keep their name and history (from Otto Graham to Vinny Testaverde). All those Colts players and championships won in Baltimore are recognized in the Hall of Fame as Indianapolis. That is the real difference. Cleveland's legacy was left intact as opposed to Baltimore, which was ripped away and perverted. As fast as the team left Cleveland, Tagliabue insured them a new team. Baltimore was lied to and teased for 11 yrs before it got a team with Tagliabue only proposing a museum. I'm sorry the Browns have not lived up to previous frachise's standards, but that really is the current Brown's fault alone. The league can't win the games for them. The Raven's Super Bowls are Baltimore's alone with MVPs in each never playing a game as a Brown. Cleveland is more a coddled child that really doesn't realize how good they have it, while Baltimore's the neglected child that's had to fight for everything it has.
Even if the Colts didn’t leave for Indianapolis, what would Baltimore do with two NFL teams?! It most like would have to be like the Jets and Giants, there would be no other choice.
Thank goodness the Packers stayed in Green Bay instead of moving to Milwaukee...The Packers have too much of a long, rich football history in the city of Green Bay to move anywhere else, having been started by Acme meat packing company employees in the late 1800s as a sandlot football team known as the Acme Packers...I also like that the Packers had invested in renovations, expansions and retrofits to their stadium to make it a year-round attraction for their fanbase. Instead of being owned by one person, the Packers are owned by a collective of shareholders. I worked at the Packers Pro Shop at Lambeau Field in high school, and it's amazing to see all the merchandise with the Packers logo plastered all over them beyond the usual range of hats, T-shirts and jerseys!
I was only 3 when this happened if i would have been older im sure it would bother me more but im still steamed about this but at least we have 1 more Lombardi trophy than Indy
It was common practice to keep names and logos when teams relocated. Dodgers, Lakers , Giants , Cardinals, Raiders, Braves , Chargers , and Rams all moved and kept their names. Usually only teams changed names when they had only been in a city a short period of time. Seattle Pilots and Dallas Texans for example. Seattle Supersonics to Oklahoma City Thunder and Oilers to Titans being exceptions.
The fans of Baltimore seem to vividly remember the pain of losing the Colts, but they don't appear to have any problem with the way they acquired the Ravens. That really says a lot about people way beyond pro football. It says that they're hopelessly terrible. Nice.
I feel bad for Cleveland fans as a Baltimore sports fan, but the baltimore move is still much worse cause the team just took off and left and took our name (which has a Baltimore inspiration), our records and championships.
I'm a Cowboys fan and have never been to Baltimore (at least not yet), but I have to agree with their assessment of what Irsay did with the Colts. The way I see it Irsay did what he had to do and if he felt as though he would be more financially stable moving to Indy so be it I had a problem with the way he did it and felt he could have moved that team in a more professional manner and did it to their face and not behind their back. The NFL should have made him turn that team around and go back to Baltimore and go through the proper and mandatory procedures to move that team. He moved that team like he was a damn cowboy packing up his family and moving to another land to settle down on. And time went on and 12 years had passed by before Baltimore got another team and was back in the NFL, and they stole a team from an NFL city and that was total revenge for what happened to them and what else was so bad, the NFL turned Baltimore down from getting an expansion team. And you know what the Ravens have been more successful than the Colts, the Ravens have won 2 super bowls, and the Colts have only 1 super bowl since being in Indy and super bowl 5 belongs to Baltimore and the Baltimore Colts.

Explain why they should be obligated to stay in that dump stadium when their land lord refuses to renovate it? Also they weren’t billionaires in the 80s in fact the Hoosier dome cost 77 million to build. NFL teams cost less than that back then.
@@CynicalCharlatan88 If Memorial Stadium was such a dump, then the team owners should never have signed a lease to play there in the first place. And 77 million dollars to build the Hoosier Dome in 1984 would be over 200 million in 2021 dollars. A lot of money to spend on a stadium that the Colts played for only 24 seasons.

That's insane. The city did not own them, the Irsays did. Pro Football is a business. If McDonalds moves their headquarters to another city, they don't change their name or history. The Dodgers, Lakers, Giants, Cardinals, Rams, etc. etc. etc. didn't leave their names and history behind. - it's ridiculous. ONLY Baltimore has cried about this bullshit. Get over it.
No franchise has ever left the name behind without being forced to.
I hear you because the Browns had fought like pitbulls to get the name back. It was one hell of a fight.
Why? The city did not own them. The owner makes the decisions
How about San Diego keeping the Chargers name/history and Oakland keeping the Raiders name/history? How come no one talks about that?
from Baltimore and agree he had the right to move the team, but as a good human being, a real man HAS to say he’s moving the team and not slink around in the shadows avoiding the city/media/fans…we wouldn’t of liked it but would’ve at least respected the decision…Ravens ended up being awesome so all worked out
And yet eleven and a half years later, they accepted a deal to take someone else's team from them. Who knows how things would be different if the Colts had stayed in Baltimore? Perhaps, if they had left the history of the Colts and the name in Baltimore, there wouldn't be a Ravens franchise there.
The colts left by the cover of darkness.....The Colts' Band proceeded by the light of day.
Simple. Don't try to seize a man's personal business via eminent domain. Baltimore forced Irsay to move the team or lose it.
Yep, eminent domain amounts to stealing.
I agree, that's communism.
I think Irsay did Baltimore dirty with HOW he moved the team but Baltimore could have prevented this from happening and a lot of the comments here don't mention that at all 🤔
Youre no Indianapolis Colts fan. Go away
They were threatening to leave over 4 years the city did nothing to make things better. They had to pay the Orioles rent and share their revenue with them and the Orioles didn't have to share nothing with the Colts. I don't blame them for leaving at all the city had time to make things better and they didn't so the Colts left.
Isn't it interesting that both of Baltimore's teams were once called the Browns?
FAITHandLOGIC That was very ironic lol
Never thought of that but true.
"I have not any intention of moving the g-d team. If I did, I would tell you about it. Okay?" - Bob Irsay

The NFL returns to Los Angeles of both the Rams '16 & Chargers '17
@@ErickGainesSanders - you are seriously dellusional
If the state had built a new stadium, instead of trying to sieze control of a private citizens property, like they'd promised Baltimore would still have the Colts. I'm sure the Colts would rather just pretend it never happened and that they were in Indiana from inception, where they have top tier facilities, raving fans, and plenty of money. After all, people tend to forget that the team snuck to the border of Maryland in the dead of night, out of fear of being arrested by Maryland State Police, and were escorted by Indiana State Police to their new home in Indianapolis.
Well one thing Baltimore has that Cleveland doesn't....

Wait a sec, America once actually made t shirts?? Damn
Of all relocation, this was the worst. Baltimore Colts should still exist.
Not anymore
17:25. That's a damn cool t shirt for 1983. I didn't even know Logo 7 was around way back then.

Baltimore had the last laugh, though. Baltimore has won two Super Bowls since then and the Colts only won one.
