charlieisamonster to avoid breaking strings, use the normal ernie balls from .10, also use the pencil in the groove of the nut, but use the glycerin in the groove of the bridge, then use the steel with four zeros to soften the frets of the keys. Hello
I just can't get my E string up that far as a 2 months in newbie. Even a full note upwards bend is hard work, nevermind 2.5x notes! Still, glad I took up guitar as I've discovered BBKing and other such legends during my journey thus far.
I was actually at B.B.'s last complete concert in Kansas City, MO October 29. He mostly sang and played very little. He was walked on and off with help. Two nights later he was at House of Blues in Chicago and could not finish the show. He died a few weeks later. I cannot believe it has been five years 💔
I agree with you that the point shouldn't be to duplicate what BB did, but rather, learn the techniques that he used to create his unique sound to then create our own way to express ourselves. While I have no problem with sounding like BB King, I don't want to play exactly like he did. I want to take the things I learn from his techniques, those of Albert King, and those of other great blues guitarists and mix them together with my own sense of melodic timing to create my own way of expression. Thanks for this lesson. As always, it's a big help. 😃
I really appreciate your work on this. BB makes it look so simple, but the tempo, timing, bends, etc. ... you do a great job covering all the subtle details as well as the note-by-note licks. Thanks for doing this.
Counting can be really helpful and it is greatly appreciated, it really helps when playing along with the record and thinking about the harmony as well. I really appreciate the work that went into this one. Cheers brother.
Justin, I was looking at several videos about this solo from the top internet teachers and they were all doing beautiful technical demonstrations of this solo, but your demo was the only one that expressed great feeling. I think BB would have really appreciated that because that was one of his main messages to aspiring guitarist. -Basically he would say, find your own voice and let it come out through your instrument. And you do that beautifully in this demo.
Beautiful. I was practicing this song and I was doing those bends, guess what? My high E string broke. For the first time, it was a fun experience, but I'm gonna have to get a new pack of strings.
since i dont have an es-335 guitar model or any type of an electric guitar close to it. i am learning it on my classic nylon sting guitar and it sounds beautiful
This video is great, and I learned a lot from it! BUT -- I want to "note" one thing -- I believe BB King plays this in his "BB box," based around the position of that first index finger vibrato note, rather than dropping down into the first position pentatonic. This is not meant to say the lesson isn't effective, but for those of you out there really looking to nerd out, I think transposing the position of the hand (so that the index finger on the B string becomes the root note, rather than dropping to the same note on the high e string), will help illuminate some of BB's techniques, and also make some of the bends / rolls a little more fluid. Anyway, thank you for breaking this down so diligently!
Good lord mister Justin... don't say you don't do it justice... you do ! And thank you for all your lessons, you totally make me want to pick up my guitar.
Great lesson! One the things that I do to help me in going from the third string, ninth fret to fourth string ninth fret: As I play the third string, I already position my second finger near the fourth string, ninth fret. This keeps me from having to roll my third finger up in order to hit the fourth string with it. It may only work for me, but I found having to roll my third finger up a little bit more difficult than doing this. I really appreciate your lessons! Thank you for sharing your talent. :D
Awesome that you did this. You're an amazing teacher. My ears tell me some of the high bends aren't quite high enough, but your fingers look like they are going plenty far. Is there a combination of string gauge and tension that gives you more of a tone bend for the same finger motion?
I admire your humility.Mark of character in my book. Your lessons are excellent. I hope you get filthy stinking rich off all the hits you get. Well deserved.
in all these years watching and enjoying every single one of your videos this is the first time I've seen you so moved, so "blue" in a way... guess this is the "feeling the tune" you talked about... cheer up mate, and thanks for the amazing work!
You inspire me to play, I've been playing for a a few months now and when I get home I'll be having a go at this. Great teaching and fantastic work. Thank you
Hey Justin, I want to say and I am not saying this just to say... Your tutorials are one of the best on you tube.... the way you teach "one part at a time" really really helps. I have learnt a couple of beatle songs, songs by kinks and also coldplay. If I could request u for a song, It would really help if u can make a video teaching "drive by incubus" .... thanks in advance... (y)
Another great lesson. Our band has just started playing this song so it's great to have this lesson to learn the opening solo. And it's a great tribute to one of the truly great guitarists of all times.
For me the best version of this song is the one that BB King and Gary Moore play with each other live at the Town and Country Club in 1993 (there is a clip of them on RUclips). Couldn't get those blues out of my head. Thanks Justin for the lesson :))
Another great one, Justin... Thx. Love that Gibson btw. Been watching bb for a long time. His vibrato came naturally to me but I remember having trouble with the high E. Noticed he rarely did it on the high E but when he did he would bend it up a bit sharp and then go to town.
Nice job with this, Justin. Your vibrato is great, especially with the bend. Vibrato is something I really struggle with and have been trying hard to improve.
Justin, you are the only guy I know who realized that B.B. was doing a series of bends at 0:18/0:19 rather than fretting. When I put the solo into audacity, what I heard was a bend at the 10th fret on the e string going up incrementally by half tones until the E, at which point he (silently) releases the string and does a half step bend on the high e at the 12th fret to an f note, which appears to be close to what you're doing here. That part is definitely the strangest part of the solo.
David Haley actually what you said is closer than what I originally posted, but I'm gonna correct myself now: After listening again, I am almost positive that he bends the e string at the 10th fret slightly, and then (while keeping it bent the same amount), plays the 11th and 12th frets notes. So the 3 note run is actually done while the e string is bend slightly at the 10th fret. He then does a prebend at the 12th fret (like you said), bending downward from an F note to an E note. I'm like 99% positive now.
Hey Justin great lesson, I'm practicing this great song with my brand new Seymour Duncan P-rails which sounds just fantastic. All your lessons are easy to follow and very well performed. Thanks
