I've only been playing a year but I can see how beneficial this song can be with all the slides, vibrato, chords, bends and such. So much can be learnt from this lesson, thanks a lot Justin, going to get started on this one! :) Must have been a nightmare to transcribe. ^^
Can't wait for the Classic Rock Solos series! I've learned guitar with your videos, specially strumming, which I found really hard to learn. Speed and soloing is my last step towards becoming a basic guitarist. If you could, please start with Eric Clapton's "Layla". Thanks a lot for your work!
I think the really good thing about Hendrix songs is that there's no hard and fast rule. You just have to feel the music. You gave me a really good starting point though.
Yeah you're right. When I play this song I just follow the basic structure and otherwise just kinda let go. That's how he played it and why every different recording and live show sounds different
Hey Justin. I've been following along with a couple of your posts, and I just wanted say that I really appreciate your teaching style and attention to detail. I put the guitar down for a while, but now I'm rockin' out to some Purple Haze, Nothing Else Matters, and Sam Smith. Thanks for making it fun again. Cheers!
Just found this little beauty.. haven’t played guitar in years but Mr Jimi Hendrix is the reason I love it.. love the way you do this video.. good for the beginner. Good for the Jedi.. I’m the former. Not many other vids seem give beginners the time.. cheers Justin 🕺🏽
When you teach I noticed that I can hear all the strings and notes clearly thats your high level of skill producing great tone. That's what motivates me if I hear the tone of each string and notes you play makes it better for me to learn the song..thank you..Roland J Gutierrez from Magdalena New Mexico usa.
Fabulous playing and lesson. Just one point. This song is famous for it's tritone intro so we got to get low E going along with those Bb octaves - I play it in first position as it is easy to two Es and 2 Bbs to really get the "devils interval" going! Of course the bass player can play the low E, but most of us learning this and fiddling around with at home don't have a bass player. Love your lessons Justin!
awesome Justin, this is what i really need to watch and learn to play on this Sunday while quarantined at home from returning to Canada from USA, you are the man! thanks and cheers!!! Sonny
A million views. Yeah. You're not alone in liking this tune. I'm a keyboard player, and this is the tune that made me want to learn guitar, but it took me 50 years to actually pick up the guitar and learn it. I never imagined that I would EVER be able to play this, but now that I'm studying, I know that I will be able. I just have to practice. It's very exciting. It's quite the opposite of when I was first learning piano, etc. and practice was a daily drudgery. Practice on the guitar these days is the highlight of my day. I can't wait to get all the other garbage of the day out of the way so I can sit down and practice guitar.
Excellent lesson Justin! Love how you teach all the little nuances that make it sound closer to the original. Do you plan to do a lesson on some of Rory Gallagher's songs? I think he is an excellent, unfortunately overlooked guitarist :)
Justin, I can't thank you enough! Two and 1/2 years after starting my guitar journey with your beginners course, I finally have the confidence and skills to get through this tune.
I like how you show such attention to detail when it comes to all the little nuances. Hands down my favorite lesson of yours was your three parter on Sultans of Swing in which you teach all the fills. I come back to that one quite often.
A very useful lesson. Every note and nuance explained. Surprised that you are not allowed to post TABS as all the other tutors seem to do so. However I've created my own TAB - only possible because you've described exactly the location of every note and it's taught me a lot more than using TABS created by someone else. I've got several recordings of Purple Haze and he plays it differently on every occasion so I'm not worried if I don't play it exactly the same as the single released, I think in 1967. Thank you for all your efforts. I'm also learning Manic Depression (your tutorial) but that's another story.
thank you justin, it's been like 5 years i've been looking at your videos. You give me a lot of motivation to experience new styles in music . Thanks alot , keep on rocking in the free world :)
Great job on the lesson. As you said many people talked about the sound. Hendrix used a strat as we all saw him destroy many. If you use fuzz or overdrive, it will be fine. Remember, Hendrix played this song many times and probably tried lots of different types of distortion. During the solo, most people agree that he used an Octavia pedal to get those great high pitch harmonics. You are a very good teacher and made this easier to understand than previous instructors. You have it on target so it sounds like Purple Haze now when I play it. heh. Great job. oh, one thing that may help many beginners. The gliss' (Slides) were actually played as an overdub on the studio track. I would advise beginners or anyone for that matter to play it that way to get the timing and order of the song before putting in the gliss' but to each his own
Mr. Justin "Guitar" Sandercoe, Thank you for this and all the exceptional videos you post on RUclips. I just checked out your web site and read that you have been working on improvements to the same. It is, in my humble opinion, absolutely outstanding! Many Thanks and Best Regards, - Ernie Leblanc, "Into the Bass!"
If you listen closely to the second verse in the original track, Hendrix plays these sick licks over the E7#9 chord. Never noticed it until I found the Purple Haze with the guitar parts isolated from everything else. Sick.
I'd really like justin to do a behind the scenes video, a little tour of his studio and how he goes about breaking a song down and turning it into a lesson and stuff like that.
I LOVE how he stopped to say ''scuse me while I kiss the sky''.
+David Harrison Like in the song.. lol
+David Harrison I think its "scuse me while I kiss this guy"
+pokeman3652 you're wrong
+nicholas schuler Oh, yeah, I've never looked up the lyrics before, and that's what I always heard it as
+Robin Kennedy You're right.
I have no idea how to play a guitar, I don't even own one. This is just awesome to watch.
you should get one , learning to play will make you smarter
Bob DiMarzioand the chicks dig it. XD
Bob DiMarzio sooooo many mental processes occurring simultaneously using both hemispheres of the brain...i had no idea until i began playing
Miguel Flores
+Bob DiMarzio Music helps my math abilities
Great job Justin. Like your lessons. Been playing since I was 13 and still do, turned 60 this year but still there is a lot to learn.
My god you're a veteran, you've seen the legends come and go
fair play bro!
Justin is a jerk he won't respond to you or any comments.
I never heard anyone play it so well! Really amazing! Thumbs up!
+BackToConstitution there is this guy called jimi hendrix. i think he plays it decently too
+BackToConstitution gary moore plays it better than hendrix in my opinion. Moore was an incredible guitarist
+Brian Clark Moore was amazing
@Brian Clark, No one can play a Hendrix song better than Hendrix. It's like Michael Jackson entering a MJ look-a-like competition but he doesn't win.
Mike D Charlie Chapman did that once
Who the fuck disliked this... Mug. Justin you are a legend mate
Thanks for this! I really appreciate the attention to detail like the string muting, etc. Your tips really make all the difference.
I've only been playing a year but I can see how beneficial this song can be with all the slides, vibrato, chords, bends and such. So much can be learnt from this lesson, thanks a lot Justin, going to get started on this one! :) Must have been a nightmare to transcribe. ^^

Never watched a how to play for a Hendrix tune - this was super insightful!
True; "Jimi" played it different, when he played live,as with his other songs'!
Nice playing Justin
Dude, you're amazing. That is all.

No. You've fucking nailed it, Justin :)
Great job, the rhythm to the tune in the chorus is a fast up and down strum.
Learning this on my acoustic turned down a step. Fingers hurt so good 🤘
Great message to beginner players in the last 48 seconds!!!

If you listen closely to the second verse in the original track, Hendrix plays these sick licks over the E7#9 chord. Never noticed it until I found the Purple Haze with the guitar parts isolated from everything else. Sick.
