Curtis is from the Northside of Chicago and so am I. I am 81 and remember this mighty man and his mighty vocals. Miss ur sound Curtis, there will never be another.
What Mr. Mayfield was underrated or just ignored about was his ability to express so many emotions via storytelling of life's issues, especially, the current societal ones. It was as if he was talking instead of singing.
Curtis was huge back then, to think he hadn’t connected is a miss. He had a huge audience and was a cultural icon. Genius lyrics as well as sultry melodies, funky as anyone out there. His music is as strong today as it was back then. Genius, pure genius a cornerstone of the Black experience.
Please, no one slept on Curtis, wrote scores for successful films: "Claudine, "Supafly," "Let's do it again," "We're a Winner," "Choice of Colors," "Mighty Mighty Spade & Whitey," etc.,
@@bethwalker7428 I value your comment yet he was ignored by that 'OTHER' media as none of those movies you cited won a Grammy for best picture. To me he just didn't get as much attention as those 'OTHER' songwriters.
I did then and I still do, listen to his 'live' album from 1971 recorded in the Bitter End ! OK his music is great but listen to his lyrics on that album ! My goodness, the issues he wrote about are still the same these days and that makes me very very sad ! Don't worry, if there is a hell below, we all gonna go.
Brother if you played bass with Curtis, I am certain you know of Lucky. a WONDERFUL guy, great musician, and legend. Lucky Scott was also a friend of mine. Thanks for sharing with us, that is history and by extension you are part of it. Clennis High
It's alright!! Curtis Mayfield sang lead with the Impressions before venturing out on his own. Curtis not only had a good voice, he also wrote beautiful music not just for himself but for other entertainers as well. TRULY GIFTED!!!
