I’m 75 years old as of April 2023 and I still respect the messages that came through his songs. As a kid growing up in the south (North Carolina), as we demonstrated and protested against segregation in Greensboro along side the students from N.C. A&T State University….Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions music held us in unity as we marched the streets with Jessie Jackson who was a student and president of the student body at A&T. Songs like “Keep on Pushing “…”People Get Ready “….”Amen” and so many more. His music was the soundtrack to the Civil Rights Movement way before Marvin Gaye was doing conscious music. Every time Curtis came to town wether he was with Jerry Butler, or The Impressions, or with his own band…I would attend his concerts…the brother always had his thumb on equality and freedom and righteousness for our people in his music. I will always jam to his groove…RIP my brother, your music will always and forever be in my heart ❤…God sent you to help us endure the revolution of America in the 1960’s….
Thank you for this personal context. I am Scots, remember hearing and loving Curtis Mayfield in many incarnations (I’m an old bird from 60’s) but didn’t experience firsthand some of the many social injustices he sings of. He made amazing music with devastating depth of lyrics, absolute genius!
Yes Lord,,, Totally agree. I was born in the Early 60's❤. The 70's was an age of unimaginable change.... wonderment and ,..., some more shit. Just trust me. I'm sure that's an era that will probably be lied about in Future History classes.,,😂😂😂 no offense. I was there. If you do the math.,.,I was born in 19 Friggin 60 ! Look it up millennials
Curtis was on point, but the white record company executives didn't/couldn't want/allow a Black man to become successful with his music and words that didn't compliment white people. Curtis Mayfield wasn't haven't none of that shit from the white record executives. And he owned his music, so nothing they could do.
Tragic injury I saw him around 1972 in my hometown of Chattanooga. Probably the best concert I ever attended. He left us way too early. RIP Mr Curtis Mayfield 🙏🏾
Facts but don't limit his greatness to the Superbly sdtrk as his greatness with sdtrks extends to the #Claudine and #Sparkle Sdtrk as well. Not to mention his Impressions and solo artist work.
I’m 61 years old but I remember so clearly my brother after coming home from Vietnam listening to this man on his transitor radio in his room for hours love the sound him and so many others helped a lot of men make it through that horrible time in history
I’m 68 and thank The Most High for blessing me Mr.Mayfield was a blessing and had a message in all his music from people get ready to dirty laundry R I P Mr Mayfield much love 😎🙏🏾💪🏽👊🏽
The entitled, hyper emotional generation. Why are you not all stoic like the elders before you? Why must you all raise your voice so quickly, unwarranted and unwanted.
Brother Mayfield...your music is timeless, your influence indelible, your impact on all things creative unmatched. God's original urban troubadour. Rest in peace my brother. The world turns a bit more consciously, because of what you contributed to it.🎸
My absolute favorite singer from the 70's , whenever i hear ANY song from my man i immediately go back to summer time in 1975 sun was shining bright and my hopes and dreams lay out before me life was sooo good.
Yes indeed - and (as I only learnt yesterday) most of it was recorded live in the studio, with the 40-piece orchestra and band together! (for reasons of time, they recorded all of the album in just three days, except for Pusherman which had been cut earlier. I figure Curtis probably overdubbed his lead vocals to the full backing track, but the instrumental backing was done live and with very little later editing. Who today would have attempted to record a song like the title track live in one go?
This is something you don't see or hear too much live nowadays, vocals just as good as you hear them on wax... Curtis was so dam smooth... All these rappers thinking they originated trap music, but the original black musician talking about drug dealing was CURTIS MOTHAFUCKIN MAYFIELD! #RIPSalute
Truly one of God's most soulful musicians, Mr. Curtis Mayfield!! See ya in heaven dear brother. Can't wait to play along side of you then. Eternal Rest!
Im 61 years old, and I can listen to this and be this young 17 year old woman all over again, with my long hair🧙♀ and bell bottoms🩳, Large gold hoops in my ears💍, always had a warm smile to offer back then😀, Warm smiles in return, Man it was a beautiful time.💖

Yes it is, and it comes off beautifully live (heard the even better live take of it on the Ronnie Scott's album, with a powerful spoken introduction by Curtis?). They were scheduled to appear at an outdoor festival event in southern Sweden, where I live, around this time, in July 1988, but when I bought tickets Mayfield had already cancelled, perhaps because of the live recording/documentary film of his shows in London a few weeks before? I did get to see James Brown and his band - a fun memory, the JB's with Maceo Parker were great as always - and some other very good acts, so I have long since stopped grudging that I didn't get the chance to see Curtis live. At an outdoor open-air gig he would probably not have reached quite the same stark energy and precision that he got to in an indoor club show like this one.,,,
finest ever, our Curtis Mayfield. One of the best Black Music writer. Every song delivers a message, the message is deep yet easy to understand. Every listener should, @ the end, be left satisfied and contented. Reality

It is always a pleasure to hear and see Curtis Mayfield perform. He is truly missed and was a genuine musical genius! Just the melodic feel of the music was hypnotic
