Curtis Mayfield
We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue / Give Me Your Love (Live)
This was a man who loved his blackness and his people.
Brother Curtis was a poet and a visionary. This is Curtis' open letter to young black men to not let those who denigrate us be right. _("Are we gonna hang around this town and let what others say come true?")_ AND it's also a call against black on black violence. _(But there's the joker on the street, lovin' one brother and killin' the other. By the time comes we are really free, there'll be no brothers left, you see.")_ He even addressed color-struck behavior within our community that was much more prevalent 50 years ago. _("High-yella gal, can't you tell, you're just the surface of our dark, deep well. If your mind could really see, you'd know your color same as me.")_
Finally, Bro. Curtis was telling us to be real with ourselves. _("Pardon me Brother- as you stand in your glory... I hope you don't mind if I tell the WHOLE story.")_ In other words, not just what you "want" to hear, but what you "need" to hear.
Brilliantly said.
Exactly!👏🏾🤔
Yesss 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Curtis Mayfield is the one for us. His messages are etched in our minds. I hope we have a Curtis Mayfield day!
one of the greatest inspirations ever to strap on a guitar and approach a microphone
Yes Indeed JohnnyFriendly!

If only people were United 😔✌🙏
Hands down the greatest song writer of our time.
Amen
Amen,thank you Curtis miss you🙏💞😢
Well said Mr.Greg Foles ...my brotha !!!🙂
I thought the greatest song writer was Bob Dylan.
Impossible to say who the greatest songwriter is/was.
He was called the Gentle Genius for a reason. Rest in Peace Dear Curtis Mayfield.
Im very thankful for RUclips. Curtis Mayfield footage is rare, and im happy to see this.
Well said. It's times like this you have to appreciate the ability to see this gem from a special musician.
10 years before my time but I found it 40 years later! ❤
Did anyone notice the number of Blackmen with their women, children and families in the park footage? Walking with their sons, dancing with their girlfriends or wives, playing baseball. The early 70's. Brothers were, for the most part, still in the homes and lives of the Black family. Warmed me up inside to see this.
we do this today ,the media just show us killing each other.
The "MEDIA" is about ratings, not necessarily TRUTH !!
True dat!
It is up to MEN like myself and friends to TALK to the YOUNG MEN today.Nothing worthwhile is EASY - WE have to MAKE it HABITUAL !!
elzariz ht
Most definitely. THE GREATEST BLACK FREEDOM STRUGGLE SONG WRITER OF ALL TIME
No over-programed electronics. Straight rhythm section & the legend.
These men are true musicians not so much entertainers. I’d see him and other artists live back in the 70’s. Each instrument speaks to other instruments. Each holds respect for all instruments. Best part were the “solos” too! Watching a story in motion.
Nothing wrong with electronics - there are a bunch in his guitar and amp. Also, I don't think electronics did George Clinton any harm!
@@bencolemanart Who the fuc* is talking about Clinton? I'm old school, but since you brought it up.... I know that Clinton was a dude who let the great musicians around him, create all those iconic songs, & many went broke, while George claimed the music as his, while he snorted-up the popularity....THEN...sold the song rights for cash $$ years ago...for MORE coke, & stiffed the actual creators. Now he wants the courts to give him the song rights back, even though the deals were legit....bcuz he needs more coke $$.
So much Love, happiness, UNITY in this clip. I remember so well! REST IN POWER CURTIS MAYFIELD!❤🖤💚💯
A musical legend with a prophetic voice.
Timeless classic soul songs! I'm glad I grew up on positive inspirational music like this! RIP Legendary Curtis Mayfield!
the most beautiful guy ever, him and donny and marv
Curtis Mayfield was THE MAN. His own man. Greatest songwriter ever.
Mr. Mayfield had a message!
He sure did. Too bad so many fools had their ears plugged.
One of the greatest live versions of a song ever
henry gibson what a tight conga and bongo player dam tight fast chops
All his music had so much emotion, meaning and power. His voice was so and intelligent .
Some days I need substance, Curtis Mayfield is truly medication to an Artist. Thank God for blessing us with such an talented and inspirational song writer and performer in Mr. Mayfield.
the scratching guitar, bongos, tambourines, mayfields falsetto voice, its flows so damn natural and good....Mayfield looking so fresh and slim in that white 3:30 these first few sentences of lyrics are the essence of "cool". His high pitched voice, clothes, looking and sounding so good. His vocals are perfect
Curtis was such a talented singer, his words were so meaningful , it to bad people didn't get the MESSAGE he spoke. 😔🙏✌
@@RayKing-tl2vc yeah hes all about peace love and equality. the superfly album didnt glorify drugs, it did the opposite. mayfield was a genius, and he still made an album that was pure old school cool
NGO...Never Gets Old. RIP, Mr Mayfield. God bless
How did he pass on? He was only 57?
Taylor Moore In August 1990 Mr Mayfield was paralyzed from the neck down when some stage lighting equipment fell on him. In the ensuing years he had health issues due to Diabetes. Dec.26,1999, Mr Mayfield passed away as a result of Diabetes.
Jerry Johnson
-- Thank you for the information. Very sad to learn the background leading to his demise.
Taylor Moore Yeah he deserved better than that.
What sum fail 2 realize is that the wicked BURN 4 ever and death is SUMthing only the creator can prolong or postpone...
This is the lick! Cats like Curtis, Marvin, and Stevie brought thought provoking lyricism and and new sound to Soul Music during the 70s; it totally supplanted the Motown/Stax sound of the Sixties. Thank you Bro. Mayfield, for giving us music that goes beyond dancing...
and now it's mumble rap, what the fuck!!!
Prog Soul
#facts
That's why the love for the black man/woman will never end, why? Because we can take nothing and make it into something! PERIOD!!!
The late great Henry "Master" Gibson on percussion!!!
ndeed
What a badass!
Curtis Mayfield is an inspiration to all people in general especially black people . I listen to brother Curtis all the time . RIP MY BROTHER YOURE A HERO TO ME .
He had to have had one of the best bands in that time!! 🎼🎶🎵
Just to see this legend Henry Gibson thumbing and slapping some of the best soul percussion sounds make this clip!
+Mats Nilsson ... Thanks for your complement ! .. the words you speak are more than 250% correct .. all the percussion sounds played by "Master" Henry on the recordings were played simultaneously without the need to overdub !! .. He should be in the "Hall of Fame" for percussionist .. I really miss my bandmates ! yeah, Craig McMullen (original guitarist w/ Curtis Mayfield "live" and recordings)
+Craig McMullen It's a great honor to read your comment, you and your bandmates are part of the genuine soul history, and you are right down legends! Kudos to you my friend! (hehe i thought your last name was McCullen, shame on me).
+Craig McMullen What! Is that you in this video on the right of Curtis playing the guitar?
+Craig McMullen mr mcmullen - it is a true honour to be able to tell you this (even if only through the internet): you and your bandmates have brought me SO MANY hours of joy and truth. Curtis will always be the rock on which i base my soul. thank you all!!! and let's hear it for 'lucky' scott while we're here too...
+Craig McMullen Mr. Mc Mullen, the truth you & your band mates could never be surpassed. I couldn't believe "Rolling Stone" magazine didn't include Curtis Mayfield(nor Ernie Isley) off the TOP 100 Guitarist of All-Time list...
First time seeing this🥹🥹🥹Think of how many samples come from him💯💯🙂🙂
Curits still one of the best singers in his own style. He was like no other!
Mr Curtis knew how to match his chords on guitar!!!! Wow amazing!!!!
the funky electric guitar in give me your love is sooooo good
We have lost a consciousness in our music today. I am longing for those days again nostalgia. I thank my parents for raising me with music like great Curtis Mayfield in 80s and 90s as child. Today we have music that is absolutely poisoning our black youth.
I agree
I have to agree and what they don't realize is what you put out into the atmosphere will definitely come back to revisit you. Can't blame it on nobody else we know what's going on but you have to take responsibility for the messages you send out. 🙏🏾🕊️✊🏾
Perfection in Music...the master Curtis Mayfield
Curtis always had the best congas
Master Henry Gibson
Did this dude leave any sons behind?? We need another Curtis, this dude is genius...so pro black 💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋
Hope Floyd Oh yes. He left 9 babies behind. He definitely has sons.
And daughters..
Wow stuff we don’t hardly this days!!!
Fantastic! Went through a Curtis/Isaac Hayes phase and they still stand up anytime you put them on. Curtis was a beautiful and peaceful soul.
Went through the same phase 20 years ago...and never left!
Gib My dad took me to see Isaac Hayes live at the Apollo Theater as a graduation present from high school. One of the best concerts I ever saw. My father has since passed on but that is a very fond memory.
I was lucky enough to see him live twice in London.
A true, true genius. I think his own modesty, humility and humanity stopped him getting the even bigger popular recognition that he, his and his messages so richly deserved.
Thank you God for Teacher Mayfield, teach brother.
Rockin Roberts yes, Ee thank God for Curtis
This appears to be from a move called Save The Children from 1973. Holy cow they rock "Give me your love", I like it better than the original.
Of course, the movie clips were added to complete the video.
No....it's good to hear, but the recorded version is much preferred. C'mon man!!!
he was excellent
Greatest soul singer ever!
Great stuff every time he opens his mouth he shapes the higher moral ground.
Dear Mr. Mayfield. We miss you so much. We miss your gorgeous and passionate voice and heart. We miss your truth. Your music will live forever.
😍😍😍😍, grew up listening to him, my mom is sooo dope, she introduced us to all kinds of music! I m still listening to his CDs 2021
Boummmm!!!!
Curtis is forgotten because he was too deep for the masses. A legend.
I think that , the masses have moved on, I think his lyrics will never been forgotten....
He's not forgotten. His music is in my DNA...
He's not forgotten by any means.
You been pickin my thoughts. That's exactly what I been saying!
Yeah...He just doesn't get the same accolades and recognition like James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Al Green and others
Now I know what the true meaning of one of a kind means and Curtis Mayfield was definitely one of a kind!
Bittersweet that this kind of music is no longer made. This is real music, so much feeling!!!! Check out Notations - Super People (produced by Curtis?).
This site is great so many stars INCLUDING BROTHER MARVIN GAYE WOW

Beautiful.....
He was really different. True legend, for real.
The video is so perfect as well, so natural, just like the music and Mayfield.
This is just so good.. perfection.
The message is strong!#KickinKnowledge
I'm going back to the sixties when Curtis Mayfield started out with "Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions." When the 70s came along, Curtis solo career blossom with one of the greatest albums entitled by the movie "Superfly." Great artist, tremendous lyricist.
excellent
Digging the scenes from early 1970's Chicago! I remember that big ole slide in the park near the lake front on the Southside, whatever happened to that slide?? Footage from the Save the Children concert and Curtis Mayfield is frickin' GENUIS!!!!
Truly legendary and misunderstood for his foresight.
I have never heard this Curtis Mayfield song before, wow it is as the kids would say today "woke". How is this not a song that everyone knows and has heard throughout their life? Oh yeah, we live in Amerian the home of denial, greed, racism, sexism, homophobia ect..But no matter how $ucked this county is the music that it produces is what keeps me able to carry on. Thank you, Mr. Mayfied
sarah nichols yes he was woke way back then especially when he went on his own. As well as a group called The Last poets. Now that was so woke music for the people
Mr Curtis Mayfield is one the top musicians ever no doubt
Damn it, I love him! Real Master!
The best music ever. Love this. Beautiful memories.
The Truth. Thanks for posting.
PHARAOH
CURTIS MAYFIELD...!
it's rare that a live version sounds better than a studio version, but this does
Brother Mayfield Superb, loved the footage of families
Curtis' music is so fucking perfect.
Thinking of days wen protesting for equality in racist america and knowing by 2015 both Blacks and Caucasians will live in harmony. James Brown holler, 'we black and proud but a forgotten brother, Mayfield ' We the people who darker than blue', don't stand around town......sadistic behavior of policing Black america, racist manager of public housing, slumlords needs to held accountable. No one should be above the law! Black folk be proud of your kinky hair, dark skinned; if you are a black man, you are from Africa. WE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE DARKER THAN BLUE......
we don't live in harmony. We are cordial
still relevant !!!
Curtis is the best. Incredible band, too. My friend Craig McMullen on guitar. Love them all!
Soul Classic....
he was so bless
Washington Park - on the Southside of Chicago
