Awesome videos guys, keep up the hard work and wish you a lot of success with your expedition around the UK. I’ve not long started teaching our Cubs and Scout’s about Powerboating, trying to get as many kids out on the water as possible. Just a little tip, when you get start going fast, and your boat has pushed itself mostly out of the water, look at your bow to see if it’s bouncing. If it’s bouncing, tap the Trim Down switch briefly, keep tapping it until your bow stops bouncing. Once your boat is almost flat on the water, you’ll get a bit more speed out of it. Once your planing is stable, you can ease off the power and save a bit of fuel. Don’t ease off too much though, or you’ll drop back down off of the plane. Our little 6hp, won’t get me and 3 Cubs up on the plane though, but it does fine for pottering around the harbour. :D Keep posting the videos...
Great work! nice little toy been awesome following your build. Can't wait to see your adventures. If one day you change the engine, it could probably take a 50hp.
@@aciid_0 no its trimmed in far too much. and engine could do with going up a couple of inches.. he gets 22 knots from this, set it up right and will easy go over 30 knots with same motor .... 22 knots is very very slow for that boat.
I just watched all 7 shows. Your editing skills are terrific! Super interesting! That synth music was tired though after the 5th time I heard it. I hooper your Family trips are all you hope they will be.
Just found you today and got caught up to here. Personally you couldn't pay me to take that in the ocean. I wouldn't even take it out on a windy day at my local lake. But I have enjoyed the videos and will continue to watch.
Very nice job fellas I just found this channel and will be watching the rest. I am so envious of you guys doing what I’ve always wanted. Trim it up a bit to save fuel and get more speed and better handling
Spark plugs every time. I have one of those Hondas and they're pretty indestructible. Whenever it has a cough it's always a knackered plug. It's also worth checking the impeller because they rot fairly quickly, fall apart and bung up the water passages.
Great work restoring the speedboat. They are a lot of fun, I have a personal watercraft that I have used to go to and from Catalina Island here in CA. I actually feel safer on my watercraft than my friends 30 foot boat.
When you first started the resto I though here we go this will be dodgy as. Now I am very impressed. I would have used dual wall heatshrink though. The issue with all my zodiacs and running heavier 4 strokes has not been the strength of the transom but the strength of the connection between the transom and the tubes. Have a look at Aussie Surf rescue Ribs and see how they strengthen this area to cope with daily crashing into waves etc Great video btw
Those concrete barges are at rainham marshes, they were never part of d day ! I grew up in rainham , we got told at school they were there to stop enemy boats coming right up the Thames , they were linked together across the Thames there as a sort of blockade
I love the restomod boat! So, silly question: as you are planning to long haul in it, could you take/make one of those pickup bed campers and put it where the rear seats are? You could also get a wrecked Japanese kei camper van and use the shell off that. I'm not too sure about the buoyancy and weight limit of the craft, but they are tipically water resistant as they are made out of fiberglass and/or plastic, so it might be a good starting point. (I guess you could also make a mini barge and tow it like a trailer :P)
Pedant corner here...... The QE2 bridge is not the M25, although it connects the M25, it's actually an A road, the A282. Now that's all clear well done, new subscriber here! Loving the videos, my kind of project! I have a small 11 foot fletcher with a 30hp 2 stroke, so a very similar boat! I live on the Anglesey coast by Holyhead so if you ever make it round to here and need help/fuel/provisions give me a shout! 👍
I was laying about today and binge watched the whole series. You did a great job with that old boat. This was a fun series to watch. Cheers!!!! P.S. Who the hell would down vote this video? Plebs!!!
stoked you boys had the RIB out for a successful run. How far past the Thames Barrier are RIBs permitted to go. Wouldn't mind taking mine for a run past Big Ben?
Hi Harry. Am binging your channel! Have just bought my own project speed boat. Not a rib but am planning some adventures. Can you tell me which model of ray marine dragonfly you initially had before they (rightly) pimped you out with kit. Looking forward to round the UK 8!!
Hi Harry. Glad to hear its running so well now and it was the carbs. Id recommend you run it on higher octane fuel (premium) as the ethanol content is less so it is better for carbureted engines. Plus the ethanol attracts moisture in the fuel. Let me know if you need any more help. The boatlooks amazing and ive been awaiting news of whether it was running better. If you have the carbs apart again get them in a sonic bath. Did you try trimming up a touch flat out for a touch more speed? P.S dont forget ya’ killcord 😉.
Hey James, good tip on the higher octane. I will give it a go. I have read online that with the Honda BF30 it's a good idea to change the idle jets. What do you think? Also do you know where I might get them from? I'm still getting to grips with the subtleties of the trim, but i've got the trim dial working which is helping me to get more of a feel for it.
Hi Harry. Do you want to rejet the carb in terms of play with sizes or simply replace like for like? I wouldnt mess around too much going away from standard. Lings Honda have fantastic exploded diagrams for the engines. Check them out. Provides all part numbers etc. I was about to suggest trim gauge. Keep the plastic trim lever on the outboard bracket (the one that acts as a sender for the gauge to determine the trim) well lubricated as they tend to seize and stop working. It all looks good though. I see it has the hall mark Honda throttle box - missing the plastic on the fast idle lever! Let me know if you want more help. Keep the engine trimmed down all the way and once on the plane trim up slightly. Di it a tiny bit by tiny bit until your speed levels out. If it decreases its too much. You will also find that for the first few moments of planing the boat will be slower because of the self filling / emptying hull too Dont forget.
@@jameswallace7709 I''ve just done the spark plugs but still running a bit rough on idle. Also the idle exhaust port on the back of the engine is very near the waterline and might be getting swamped. Do you think that's a problem?
Hi harry. I assume you have the right plugs and carbs are balanced and tuned. It cannot be more than that to be honest. It wont be the exhaust. 1/2 the exhaust goes through propeller anyway. If you put your finger on the exhaust during its next dunking you’ll notice the bubbling coming from the prop more predominantly. The carbs many need a sonic bath. What did you use to clean them? Feel free to get me on email. James (at) jwallace(dot)org(dot)uk Cheers
Omg loved it, i checkes your play list every day waiting for this to come out also Why dose this only have 100 viwes i deserves so many more. Ps please make a patreon i would love to suport you amazing channel. Keep up that fab work.
Thanks Matthew! I have thought of starting a Patreon, but I think you may be the only one taking it up. More videos coming soon, including the long awaited 'foam mining on a big ship' epic.
1: Paint that engine cowling in the same color as the hull 2: Wrap vinyl over thin foam on the dash, same color as seats That in my opinion would greatly improve the looks.
Did a good job of her but feel it's a bit all the toys no idea. Depth sounder does not need to be that advanced on a small rib even for expedition also where the transducer is it will easily get damaged. Plan in getting an AIS system and a decent radar reflector that way other vessels can see you easily. At the moment most of that shipping on the seaward side of the Thames wouldn't know you were there. The Comms system your mate was using is very Gucci and know there is other systems out there designed for marine environments and can be worn with a helmet. Would redo the wiring in the switch panel with heatshrink connectors and ideally try and make it waterproof. The immersion suit you were wearing is really an all or nothing system so would personally look at a dry suit and some coastal sailing salopetts and jacket to give you more freedom. Would recommend getting a Gecho helmet when you do longer runs as it's a bit more safety and keeps your head warm alot more. Didn't see it but hope you had a kill cord on. Good luck and keep the videos going.
It's great to see the boat is now fully working and giving it the beans seems to be no issue either. The WW2 pontoons are still to be seen in France too, I have a video showing them ruclips.net/video/bXEbYA4Wbtk/видео.html

A towable sleeping platform isn't a bad idea. Or possibly an inflatable section that slots in around the seats, like a bouncy castle.
