Like honestly. How hard is it for Nintendo to port their SNES games to phones and PCs for that matter?! Obviously it's because of a conflict of interest with their Switch console, but look at the success of Fortnite. The big moneymakers of today are the ones that rush to make their game as available to everyone as quickly as possible. Same reason Among Us is huge.

    The potential is there.
But it gets squandered by the fact that the moment you open the appstores, it's already trying to sell you 100 different versions of Clash of Clans, Candy Crush, and gacha games, devolving it all into "what palette do I want" rather than "which of these are actually good".

Delta touch is an unofficial port of doom 1, 2 and 3, where you can run mods like brutal doom on it and many more. Gameloft used to be my childhood (played many pre touchscreen smartphone games made by Gameloft), but now they are a shadow of their former selves and they at least deserve some backlash from the fans for their terrible practice.
I enjoyed Asphalt 9 way more than Asphalt 8 even though both games are filled with microtransactions.
It's impossible to praise Watch Dogs 1 (for what it is) and not have someone reply to your comment saying that "the game sucks, it's trash". Funny thing is that I liked Watch Dogs 1 and many of my IRL friends liked that game too.
All I have to say is that the people who spread hate towards a certain game is the minority in the internet but a vocal majority in the comment section, which means that the small group of people managed to spread their hate towards a certain game with their loudspeakers. Take Crowbcat for example, he even managed to turn hating GTA 5 into a trend, even though GTA 5 is an amazing game.

I'm hyped you covered this topic! Before the whole pandemic hit, I was actually working on the publisher side of mobile games - specifically, we were working with Japanese, Hong Kong, Chinese, and some European / American indie devs to have their games available worldwide. (Once the virus hit though, the whole chain of development, especially among indies, fell apart so I wound up having to work other jobs in the meantime.)
But let me just say, we'd see all sorts of mobile gems and cool upcoming projects! Like we worked with Mihoyo when they were doing Honkai Impact 3rd before Genshin Impact and CyGames during their mobile only, Japan exclusive days.
That said though, holy crap did we also see the crippling roadblocks holding back mobile gaming.
    1. Both Android and Apple stores severely cripple games being easily available and accessible to all mobile users. Since they focus on all apps, games are gonna get buried under things like Snapchat, as you pointed out. But the storefronts are the wild wests, where any garbage gets on and any new game has to compete with asset flips and companies that can pay to manipulate the store rankings.
With Android, you can at least manually download games and install their .apks, but Apple has a strangehold on all outside apps.
Without a dedicated and easy to use game store like Steam, downloading / buying games is treated like a red headed step child.
We actually ran a game store app, but both Android and Apple refuse to support it because then it would take traffic and profits away from their stores. So even having a third party dedicated game store is a pipe dream as long as the operating system makers have a strangle hold on it.
    2. The extreme inconsistancies among phone models and users made troubleshooting games a nightmare. Even when a big name polished mobile game came out, we had to do so much troubleshooting because the games usually wouldn't run on every phone for such varying reasons. And because the userbase isn't as tech savvy as the average pc gamer, it was that much harder to help them get the game running.
Like when Pokemon Masters released, there wasn't initially any notes telling us users had to have a 64-bit OS. And most people don't know what specs their phone has. And explaining 32 vs 64 bit processing doesn't solve anything. All people knew was the game wouldn't work and we had to answer all their complaints and we couldn't physically fix the game on our end.
    3. This actually leads into the global aspect of phone models. Companies want to reach as many users as possible to make money, usually via the F2P model. But because of the wealth gap between countries, the biggest markets who play mobile games (China, Brazil, Southeast Asian countries) have older phones that can barely run games. So countries with people who can play games, end up playing very shallow mobile games with lots of advertising money or established things like COD Mobile. And then countries with people who can't play all games but use mobile as their primary game platform, can't play all the games because of the accessibility of good hardware. (Indie devs can't obviously afford to test their games on every phone model or older systems and big publishers tend not to invest in anything that would actually tax any system / be a console type game as that limits their market).
There's tons of stuff I haven't even mentioned, but you did a fantastic job covering the topic as always!!!

An important thing to add to the conversation is the race-to-bottom pricing caused by free to play nonsense. Legit ports of legit games are 1/3 the price as their steam counterparts.
The award-winning GRIS is $17 on steam, and only $5 on mobile.
There's such a stigma against charging more than 5 bucks on mobile, I think that might discourage a lot of the devs from porting to mobile.

Thank you for making this video.
It's so annoying when people get so disappointed over mobile games being announced, simply by the platform that it's on. You can blame the Free-To-Play market for that, but that doesn't mean that you can't find good stuff on phones. You can play almost all the Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy games, GTA games, Sega Genesis titles and a ton more that you mentioned on a phone. Mobile gaming is here to stay, and to hate on it because 9 year-olds like playing Fortnite on it is ridiculous.
And don't even get me started on emulation...where you can download Retroarch and have more than a dozen game consoles in the palm of your hand.
Playing on phones is great, but you have to let go of the stigma, ignore the free-to-play crap, and go digging for the good stuff. Most good games are way cheaper than their PC counterparts. Give it a shot. I'm sure you'll at least have fun exploring.

I myself have a Note 9 and use it for emulation all the time, since the S Pen gives me a very good DS like experience. But there's something about having a dedicated device for gaming that can fit in your pocket that just feels more special. Not to mention, I highly prefer the control scheme of both my PSP Go and Vita, with the former being smaller than my phone anyway. I tried the whole controller clip-on thing, but it was annoying having to use the touchscreen on menus and stuff, plus the controller itself has to go in a bag - not something I'm always willing to carry with me everywhere I go. I even have a Switch, but I don't take it out of the dock too often because of that. I think I'm still looking for the perfect device for me, but for now, I think I'm leaving mobile gaming alone. I've always been one for portable gaming, but when it comes to mobile phones, there's still something missing.

-For PS3, get a compatible external bluray drive, and use 13xforever's One-click PS3 Disc Dumper, or use custom firmware on a PS3 and some homebrew software.
-For Wii/GameCube/GBA/DS/3DS games, look into homebrew for the Wii and 3DS, and get a GameBoy Advance GameCube link cable. Make sure your Wii is one of the backwards compatible models (i.e. has GameCube controller ports on the top), and that's where the GBA GameCube link cable comes into play. It takes awhile, but you can dump your GBA carts using some Wii homebrew software via the ol' link cable this way.
For Wii/GameCube & DS/3DS games, simply use the relevant homebrew software on the Wii and 3DS to dump the disc/cartridge contents to external hard drive or sd card respectively, and you're gold.

Man, this video made me realize how much I missed your work. I recently started watching Jacob Geller and he made a video called How to Write About Videos Games. It’s a love letter to his favorite articles that are about people’s experiences with different games. As some one who’s life would be nothing without music and writing (when the two combine, oh mama, I’m wet), that video really blew the cap for video essays for me. Because of that video, it’s hard for me to see video essays the same way ever again. This video made me realized why when ever you upload a video, I get excited and clear some time of my day that very day it’s uploaded to watch the video. The way you write so passionately mixed with the way your vocalizing. When you start talking more aggressively and the words you use start to take a change, I feel my emotions shift. Then you bring it down again and ground it, and I’m back to a calmer state of mind. Your humor is something that I enjoy as well. I will admit, I do not play video games nearly as much as I used to. Since I’ve graduated high school in 2018-19 and start a mentorship in music production, my love for music simply became an obsession and slowly pushed other interest aside. I’m not using the bullshit excuse of “oh, I don’t have time now”. I do have the time, I simply lost interest and have changed. From the occasional story driven game or open word game, I don’t play many games anymore. Though I wish to change that in the future. But it’s channels like these that make me want to play games again because of how these videos are written, where people speak so passionately that keep enjoying video games without actively playing them. It’s like how I can ramble on about the newest Tame Impala album, 1990s electronic music, 1960s psychedelic music, some random internet album I found on Bandcamp, literally anything electronic music, anything relating to music history, some minimalist classical piece, some face-fucked metal band named Infant Annihilator, and so on and so on (I’m starting to ramble even though I’m just writing a list) until one A.M in the morning just like you, Jacob Geller, Nakeyjakey, and a bunch of channels I watch and discover that write the beautiful created scripts that come from place of love and care for the thing they’re obsessed with: video games.

    Raycevick,
Firstly, I just want to thank you for taking the time and learning how much potential there really is in mobile gaming, and then sharing it with the Internet. I've been playing mobile games as my primary gaming experience for basically half my life now, and I've always been shut down by others who just dismiss mobile gaming as nothing more than Angry Birds and Candy Crush. Asphalt has been my main focus for the past 2 years now, and I've even seen an eSports community grow and I've had the chance to compete in tournaments! The recent explosion of Fortnite and other titles like you mentioned are finally doing the concept of gaming on your phone justice, but like you said, there is still SO MUCH more room! For 400$, a person can buy an iPhone that can do literally anything. Cloud streaming, any mobile game out right now, AND it has enough power to emulate wii games at full speed! Decades of games just fit in my pocket now, and it's truly mesmerizing' If more work is done in the emulation space, I can see PS2 and other consoles being playable on phones in the near future. One thing that people forget about mobile gaming though, is that the potential for these devices to perform at a high graphical fidelity has been around for almost a decade now! I remember back in 2011, EA ported the entire first Dead Space game to iOS! During those early years was also Rockstar's release dates for GTA 3 and Vice City on mobile. These console ports are not recent, they ran on devices almost as old as people playing Fortnite today, and people sometimes forget that. I remember instead of an Xbox 360, I played on an iPod touch 5 gen, and I would show people Modern Combat 4 in 2012 and they were confused. They genuinely thought I was lying to them, or playing a video on my phone instead of running a real game. How could the same device that played Flappy Bird also play a true tripleA FPS game?
Speaking of Modern Combat, I want to also talk about Gameloft. Your "fuck Gameloft" was amazing. BUT. .. the Gameloft story is not as simple as people think. Yes, their games are not original in overall design. Modern Combat=COD. NOVA=Halo. Gangstar=GTA. It's painfully obvious. What people forget is the fact that these games, that I would say delivered 90% of the console experience, FIT IN MY POCKET IN 2012! There was NO other company providing that quality of game for mobile except for maybe EA and Ubisoft with some of their releases. I really encourage anyone to go back and play NOVA 3, which I consider to be the greatest mobile FPS of all time. Besides the individual games, for me and a lot of other people at the time, Gameloft provided all of those experiences that people had with console games but with our phones/iPods. People have fond memories of Halo multiplayer, I have fond memories of NOVA multiplayer. I remember spending HOURS playing instagib with random people, it was amazing. Asphalt also provided my racing fix, along with other legendary mobile racing games like Riptide. Why wait to get home to play NFS when i could get my adrenaline rush in the car or during lunch break? I remember the day the Asphalt 8 teaser trailer dropped, and I CRIED. There's no way the game could look THAT good... holy crap it looks that good... on my freaking iPOD! And im doing barrel rolls in a Bugatti! 2010-2013 was considered the Golden Age for Gameloft Games. Yes, I know how gameloft games are nowadays. BUT, in 2012, you could buy a gameloft game for 7 dollars and you didn't need to worry about ads or microtransactions, and you got essentially a console triple-A game in your pocket. However, they DID NOT sell out to Vivendi, which turned the company into the husk of its former self you see today. Vivendi FORCEFULLY bought out majority shares of Gameloft. In fact, Gameloft fought against it, but were unsuccessful. You can still tell there are people who care at Gameloft, and that part is obvious with how good Asphalt 9 is, even if the improvements aren't too drastic over Asphalt 8 which came out in 2013.
So, to wrap things up. Mobile gaming, as a result of the incredible power of mobile devices, has the potential to become the greatest form of gaming ever created. The misconceptions and low standards of people helped to turn it into what you see today. Yes, your phone can be a console. It was the console/PC for MANY people, and still is today. I have more fond memories playing Gameloft games than I do playing Battlefield, or Need For Speed. That's not to say everyone should give up their PCs and Xboxes, what I am saying is that those experiences thought to be exclusive to those devices can be translated with near-perfect accuracy onto something that you carry everyday in your pocket. Was NFS Hot Pursuit better on mobile than on PC? No way! But that was in 2010! If NFS Hot Pursuit can run on a nintendo switch, that means in can run on a majority of mobile devices today, so why is EA not jumping on that? I wish I knew... At least i can play Speed Racer: The Videogame for the Wii on my new iPhone. Which when i was a kid, I never could have imagined was possible.
To everyone saying mobile gaming is not true gaming, not only are you lying to other people and missing out on great experiences, you are lying to yourself. Play GRID: Autosport, or GTA San Andreas on your phone. You'll be very surprised.

It's sad to see what Gameloft has devolved into recently. Their NOVA and Modern Combat series had heart in it. They were fun to play and delivered actually high effort content on mobile. I recently downloaded the latest Modern Combat game to relieve my memories, and holy shit did it make me sad. The game is an unbalanced pay to win piece of shit. Even though I was quite good at aiming I was constantly getting killed by players who had ridiculously op guns that you had no way of getting without spending hundreds of hours or buying it from their store.

Because of my natural and inherent aversion to mobile gaming, and well modern big-budget gaming in general, I had no clue mobile gaming advanced so far. Like, there's genuine performance and selection. The most interesting part was your point about how built-from-the-ground-up mobile games wind up inferior to straight blunt-force ports, because the mobile builds are made with built-in assumptions of a lack of capability. But as hardware improves, they can now meet the demands of many straight ports, allowing an almost or entirely identical experience. Normally you'd expect the opposite, but it shows how much potential this field has.
It helps establish that we don't need to toss mobile gaming and phones into the trash, just capitalism.

No doubt there I've got more than 10 retro systems emulated on my android device and I'm living the dream although at this point I've gone the extra mile to get an android handheld just to cut out the conroller as a separate thing I need to carry. The Gpd xd plus.

also mobile phones nowdays are a safe haven for emulation, From Atari 2600 up to Ps2 & Gamecube with AtherSX2 & Dolphin, which is by far the best ps2 emulator, highly optomized and if you have a decent enough phone and a bluetooth controller you'll be able to play the entire library.

Also with Magic Dosbox and a little bit of Know-how you can easily play Dos games + Windows 95 games on your android device, with the ability to create custom profiles so that each game can be setup and launched with specific settings & controls. It's honestly quite incredible.

Once game streaming servers get 5g and 5g gets more common, mobile gaming will be infinitely better by just playing pc games with little to no latency.

I’m literally going through bully on my iPad. I tried my steam version, it crashes and offers a 720p image at best. The iPad version looks cleaner, works with PS4 pad and I can play it on the bog.

We call the Switch a console and it's literally a tablet with a NVIDIA Tegra processor.

Yes. Find a stand and connect a bt gamepad.
The hardest part is finding GOOD games you could play with gamepad, but they do exist believe it or not.
If Switch can have so many amazing games the phone can def do it as well, since both use ARM architecture, with the SW being underpowered and outdated nowadays
