Listening to the pianist Ilona Eibenschütz recount hearing the first reading of the Quintet, while the ink was still wet, she places it in Bad Ischl, an invited audience of professionals hearing Mühlfeld with the Kneisel Quartet-and Brahms at the back of the room “with a big cigar.” Is it possible the Wittgenstein evening was a dress reading with its intended performers-Mühlfeld and the Joachim Quartet-before either its private Meiningen or public Berlin performance?
