My grandfather was German soldiers on my fathers side, although he didn’t where a helmet he was a Tiger tank commander and later got captured by the Americans sent to a prison camp in late 1944 to Nevada which is where I live now ironically he enjoyed being a tank commander so much that in the Korean War he joined the US army where he was a tank commander of a Pershing tank. Great video
Furthermore the Finnish army had thousands of "original" German helmets, mainly m-40 type, which were bought from Germany 1943-44. After the so- called Continuation War these helmets were refurbished and often an extra pair of rivets were added to these helmets for the new liner system. I should think, most m-55 helmets have the same feature. Yours Tuomas (Samout)
The first M35 was a apple green color then in 1937 they changed the color to a field grau or a dark olive green color . Around the same time they switched from aluminum spit pins to steel spit pins . In 1940 they started switching to the M40 and was still doing double decal until the Wermeche said no more double decal except for the military police. Get a chance try to get the book made by Brian Ice helmets of the German military 1935 to 1945 ,its on Amazon and is very informative.
Michael Müller They are absolutely not... Not even close, if you compare them to the other models (relatively, of course). What's used are more similar to the M34's.
Alpha Chinoz I am a fireman from Germany and its true. We still use M40 shaped helmets. The only differente is the material, which is aluminum. The only parallels to the M34 are the Air and rivet holes.
Cool , that's something to pass down in the family. I picked up a factory double decal W/SS helmet back in 1983 for $250 in Montana. It's a M-40 ET 62 lot #5152 , it was made late 1940 and was taken from a soldier that was in the Das Riech division. Take care of the helmet and watch it go up in value, 😉👍✌
The airvent on the M35 IS important. It is a separate peace (like a rivit)as opposed to th M40 and 42, where it is part of the helmet. It is the most distinguising feature between the M35 and M40/42. Pardon my French...
Great video. Keeping with the theme, could you do a decal video. like on how to put them on. also I told a bunch of friends about you your boot polish video when they asked where I learned those sick techniques.
World War Guy well, if the issue is that you don't want to modify any of your helmets, that's understandable. If you don't got any decals then I hope you will get some and if you can't think of anything to put a nice decal on I would like to inform you that your neighbor has a car with tons of space for decals.
I have an m40 finn helmet which is still confusing me. I had some of the spray paint removed exposing two more layers of paint, one being some dark green, the other being a very grass green color. The rivets are that of a german liner but the liner itself is a finn one. Most people say I own a special sort of helmet with a strange and color.
Recorder Playing Weeb not sure about the paint. It all depends on where you go it from, previous owners could of painted over it, change split pins, or the Finnish army could of just had them painted many times. Personally I don’t think it’s a special helmet, but just that many people who owned it before changed it to what they wanted.
What is always overlooked of the Finn helmets is that there were some that came from German use, so what your most likely seeing with the dark green is German paint, same with the split pins.
World War Guy I see a lot of them on ebay in various conditions. But collectors warn about buying one on ebay.because of the frauds out there taking post war helmets and aging them to pass as "found on a battlefield" or "authentic" helmets. I saw a really nice M42 last night in very good condition, with all rivets in place, for $450.00. That seems a bit suspicious.
It's always a gamble buying off the internet. I was lucky to get mine at a run-down antique shop that was a Vet-bring back for a good price. The good thing is that the M42, to my knowledge, was only produced for Germany during World War 2. So finding an original on eBay is more likely to have an authentic shell but it's the liner, decal, chinstrap, and paint to be weary of.
aging can turn the silver gold and also only the Luftwaffe used color coordinating for their helmets. Kriegsmarine helmets are also a light wash grey not black or pea green like heer helmets.
there was also a limited edition helmet used by some special Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine land units named "type 43" or "m-43" mostly black or km-blue colored, looked like a bit smaller, tighter but more robust model "m-42". Pretty rare to find but of higher quality steel so most preserved pieces are in good condition and amongst the more expensive german helmets of WW-II.
In order to stop water running into a container, you.... punch a hole in it? Mate, these were 'air vents', and there is no hidden meaning behind this - for ventilation, removal moist FROM inside.
I’ve recently bought a stahlhelm m40 but there is something off as it’s painted apfelgrun and double decal. Can someone pls help me understand if it’s been restored incorrectly or what?
I intend on investing in an original at some Point but if in the mean time I chose to go repro, what is the best source? I’m thinking an m35/40 but my heart isn’t set. I’ve heard alright things about Hessen but that’s about it so far
fish dude ah yes, let’s buy a $350 original helmet but then spend more money to repaint it and install a new liner. Spending a total of about $450. Not worth it, they overcharge their helmets.
Graphic_destiny_788 the original m42 helmet in the video could go for about $500-600. You can find them on eBay, military stores, and other various places
Bath Toaster to my understanding, during ww2 German factories would apply the decals while the paint was somewhat still wet and I believe they also had some sort of protective coating on them.
I don't mind it. On the other hand, I recall being stationed in Germany and having my peers completely and totally butcher German words. "Schützenschnur" became "shoots and snares", so on and so forth. Would rather hear this guy give an effort at pronouncing the words as they are meant to be spoken.
Heard a story that Finns were quite annoyed with air whistling thru the air vent and blocked then with wood splinters or small sticks. No idea if that is true.
I guess it applies more to the m16 style helmets than to these later models, as the taller design fitted differently depending on the bearers head size. Both the earlier and later models of the Stahlhelm were serving in the Finnish defence forces till 1960s, then they were fully replaced By other less distinctive and dull designs.
Heer is pronounced Here. You also are pronouncing a lot of German as a frenchman would. Otherwise good video. Also: The Heer was officially called the Wehrmacht and the SS combat troops were called the Waffen-SS.
The Finnish m-55 helmet is made of softer and thinner steel. They were not in any war whatsoever. The Finnish goverment ordered them from Germany in 1955 and they were still used up to 1981.
I have a Nazi, helmet I found in Spain. It is OD Green , with a metal insignia on the right side depicting a Canon in a oval . What do you know about this type of helmet?
Not so fond of the m35, the pre m35s with the tall figure look more attractive somehow and i recently purchased an authentic Austro-Hungarian m17 helmet which looks just fabulous. The prices on German ww2 decal helmets have skyrocketed, most dealers sell their helmets with prices ranging from 2400 to 3500 dollars, which is too much in my opinion, i could already buy an SS dagger or an German cross in gold with that amount of money.

Michael Müller They are absolutely not... Not even close, if you compare them to the other models (relatively, of course). What's used are more similar to the M34's.

The very, very, rare m45 helmet that looks the same as a m42 but completely took out the air vents.
The air vent exists as the name suggests to vent air. It is raised so rain and water runs around it and not inside. It's not just for decoration.
