This is a behind-the-scenes video to accompany my recent animated short film, "Model Citizen". This video covers my creative process and my ideas behind the art and themes of the film.
This video also covers my return to the Autodale universe in general. I've been away from this series for more than a year and its legacy is easily the thing my channel is most known for. This is the short film all of you seemed to want and If I were to return to the series; I was going to do it right. A huge chunk of this video is dedicated to the preparation and research I had to do to get back into the mindset of the universe I created all the way back in late 2016.
Hope you enjoy! ^_^ This particular "making-of" was a blast to make!

Me: hmmmmmmmmm..... nearly....
He said it wouldnt END in revolution. I do see one happening and it either failing, or they win and because the world outside is just SO dead they waste away like everything else
bellringer I believe that IF a revolution starts, then it would either be from an outsider that would see through the propaganda, someone exceptional, like the child or the woman from “No Monsters.” The destruction of Autodale could also come from the Freaks trying to help as we know that there are some friendly ones out there. But if we don’t get something big about the destruction of Autodale, I’d like to see how the Towns come to rise and fall and why they did so. That seems like it could hold more story to me.
I would like to think that it ends maybe by some how the matriarch dies and all the handy man shut down but then some of the people just take up the role of handy men and keep the cycle going

I’m very interested in how the mothers and fathers end up getting together. Are they simply assigned together or do they actually end up choosing who they end up with.
I image they are probably assigned based on genetics to ensure a healthy gene pool.
The Anime Noob Likely, pairs are either selected by the Matriarch, by weighted random (weighted to prevent incest) or just by a draft.
A system like that in The Giver is also possible, albeit modified: The newest adults are given a number at birth. They are called by their number at a graduation ceremony and assigned a place in society and a spouse.
Of course, they never actually have a child: some of the women in the book are assigned as a Birthmother, where their sole job is to have babies. They are artificially inseminated, brought to term, and deliver normally, but may not interact with society while with child: hence why you never see a pregnant woman, in the book, the movie, or in Autodale.
I remember someone was killed because they were divorced, so I’m guessing they choose
The Emerald Men Official but when all the children come from a select pool of mothers, surely there must be some incest in that society.
@@Corviidei Birthmothers don't stay as birthmothers permanently. They have one or two children and then become laborers for the rest of their lives, iirc.
Notice that under the word "FREAKS!!" It says "Innocent" and "Harmless"
Actually immediately went back in the video to find that. Sudden moment of realisation. As well as confirmation of my assumption regarding the labels. Its all about moulds. If you don't fit in that mould then you are ugly and thus to be removed, even if you serve no necessary detriment to those around you. Someone pointed out that in the Don't feed the freaks film, at the end the monster on the right hand side of the screen is wearing the same scarf as the adventurer we've been following. He is innocent and harmless but because he doesn't fit into the mould that is the model citizen in Autodale be is perceived as a monster
@@hammer1349 but of course the question after the most recent film is if don't feed the freaks is actually following a freak
@@axolotl0424 perhaps it could be actually. They may have once been human or even see themselves as more human than the citizens of Autodale which is certainly supported by the most recent film

I have a question: if a child shows early signs of not being "pretty" do the parents also get killed because they failed to raise up the ideal child, which is their most important job as citizens?
Edit, since this is still an active thread:
Autodale is constantly compared to a machine. If a machine misprints every once in a while yes, it can continue to make copies. But sometimes a cog is considered defective and thus is replaced, aka uglies. However, if a family were to create more then one misprint, why would they not be considered defective themselves and replaced early?
I feel like if it's their only child and did not / could not produce more, or if all of their children were not deemed pretty, they probably would label the parents ugly too. Maybe incompetent? Something to show that they couldn't make a model citizen, thus making them not one either.
Actually, if they could not produce more, they would be considered ugly, whether or not they raised a child correctly or no. In one of the previous films, a woman was killed for being unable to give birth.
@@connor7261 but she was unable to produce at all. If someone was near the time of expiration and then their child or children were deemed ugly, that would most likely fast track them to being label ugly instead of when their children grow up, because at that point they are too late to do anything and would be too old to raise another.
True.
Ma5jay5dontxdoxthat maybe but remember that the robinsons stuck around for at least several years after their son’s departure assuming the new Robinson family already had a child by the time the prior generation died. The father is still a cog. Even if he can’t produce a new cog I’d assume they still use him until he’s old.
oh my gosh the whole "this isn't Joel" and the fact that "Joel" has scratches is a great touch to cement it, and best of all like the Robinson's we don't even notice, until we're told

Guess my hunch was right. "Was that really Joe, or just another Handyman humoring them to keep things tranquil?"
I did think that that would be a weird coincidence that joe just so happened to be on slaughtering duty when they were going to be executed. But i didn't think much of it until the plot twist happened.
Maybe those robots have a shared mind almost so what "Joe" remembers all other robots would also remember so they can keep things going
* Morelull * a hivemind?
Eh, I don't want to see a revolution, I want to see the lore behind what caused the apocalypse, and where the matriarch robots came from and their purpose. Backstoryyyy!

YESSS I really was a see the lore about the matriarch rather than a revolution
I would like to explore the cause of the apocalypse as well, then the initial reactions and actions taken by the people in the different towns. Maybe even the founding of Autodale, the fall of the towns and how that might have affected Autodale, if it did. Think that could be a really interesting story to explore in regards to this universe. Maybe there was a kind of trade between the towns with their respective Matriarchs or they were enemies who know? Could be very interesting following on in the towns that did not survive from founding to destruction.

I remember when I first watched Being Pretty, I felt that it was somehow just too much like every other dystopia I had seen, and wrote it off. Now, coming back years later, I realize that I had never seen anything remotely similar to it. Rather, this series captures the ideology of my upbringing so accurately that I had nothing to remark on. It was just what my normal had been for most of my life, maybe not with literal murder of the unfit, but everything else was spot on. The death scenes were the only thing I wasn’t familiar with, and it seemed too on-the-nose because of that. I understand this world on a visceral level. Too often I see things like this done like a caricature of the real thing, written like some kind of self-insert of what the author would do in that situation rather than focusing on how someone born and raised there would function. You are one of the only ones that seem to understand that life goes on, and that the mind will restructure itself to thrive as best as possible even in a living hell, deceiving itself to avoid the crushing weight of the nightmare around it.
I’ll probably delete this later, but congratulations, you captured the dystopia so perfectly that you even fooled my subconscious.

I think it may have been a survival thing... If you look at some of the more background information you can learn a bit more about the past. For instance, the Freaks we see in don't feed the freaks are likely aliens as if you look at the early concept designs there is a poster talking about rights for aliens or "eels". Based on the way they are talked about in those posters and the line "don't feed the freaks" there was quite a bit of animosity between the humans and aliens. Quite possibly even leading to a war that the humans thought they were losing so created the handymen and perhaps even the cities they live in hope that humanity would survive.

"But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother."
Comparing dystopian stories to 1984 is a obviously a cliche these days, but the ending of your short film gave me the same feeling I had back when I read that book. I loved everything about the short, especially the very dark humorous tone at the end. I truly think this is the best short you've made for now and am excited going forward for what's to come.
It is similar in some ways but in 1984 people still know how it was before Big brother and some want to rebel. They still want freedom while in Autodale they know nothing different. They don't remember the time before because they had no need to. People in 1984 people like Winston are afraid to die while in Autodale they might be a little bit scared but they accept it wholeheartedly. Julia is also someone who rebels by sleeping with other men but Mrs. Robinson wouldn't even think about doing something like that.. it wouldn't even be a concept to her. In both everyone ends up the same: brainwashed and/or dead
I suppose these could be very easily compared, but in Autodale, everybody is completely blind; everybody is happy how they are. In Oceania, at least some people (let's take Winston, for example) want to rebel and reform their overlords.
Try comparing this to Brave New World - everyone's happy (on drugs, to be honest), they are recycled when dead, no one wants to rebel, and everything is working like a clock.
The ending that broke my heart...
Did he say “‘NEARLY’ no one wants to revolt”.
Well there are the “exceptional” people who see the truth, but they’re so small in number I think, and we’ve already seen what happens to them
elijah mikle Not to mention, whats the alternative? They are surrounded by a literal apocalyptic wasteland. It doesnt seem like other forms of society have been successful/even attempted. Plus considering the weird physics of the world dont encroach autodale; the robots/matriarch actually might be doing something to shelter humans from this
But like someone could easily pretend to be “pretty” if they were gay or depressed or something along those lines because you can pretend to be happy or straight but you can’t fake a disease. And those people could plan a revolt, though it would prove to be difficult because as soon as you tell someone who is brain washed that you want to revolt, they will snitch on you, BUT if those people can be brainwashed into thinking that autodale is a utopia then they can also be convinced that they are in a dystopia, that’s what i think at least
We’ve seen other towns which revolted against the matriarch and they collapsed into chaos and all the citizens seem to be dead.
Anny I dont think so. First off the uglies believe in the system, so its likely most people would end up self reporting. Also its really hard to fake being happy 24/7 especially when u live with people who will report you. “Exceptional” people are even part of the system and accounted for. Also if you can get people to march to their own deaths with a smile on their faces I truly doubt someone from within could stop this. Outsiders /freaks interacting with children before they are fully brainwashed and have their imagination stamped out are likely how these cycles truly broke - at the cost of who knows how many lives

Big coincidence for an automatic world or I am wrong?
( so for wen I see the Robinson say that I was like "Uh? Who said he was?")
16:14 from all the evidence I could gather about the shorts, the worker bots share the same AI. All of them have the same memory about the families as the others. The fact that they know the families name instantly, the fact that they call them model citizens, the fact that the handymen know that they are because they are just old and did their duties and not that they got divorced or something, and that they respond to the nickname "Joe" makes me conclude that the Joe impersonator remembers the robinsons and that he is really saying that they did good. Thus I conclude that the worker bots share the memories through the cloud.
If these were sold as merch, everyone would go crazy
Maybe the boy in “Don’t Feed the Freaks” could add to this story. Since he lived in absolute freedom his whole life until he reaches autodale. He sees that everything is fine at first but the starts to relies there are things that are absolutely wrong. He hasn’t been indoctrinated as well.
I imagine he would just get killed because he is a 'monster.' He is a freak, and he is different. They don't like different people, which is why people see them as freaks. That's why all he sees is freaks, because of his own perceptions. The people would outright reject him, like your own cells would if they saw a' freak' outside cell. I don't imagine he would be allowed to live in Autodale.
I think he announced in some video that Friendly Shadow (you can see news headline in this video) will be investigating security breach in Autodale. I think its that monster that he's after
@@justadumb8864 ironic that in real life, the normal people got rejected nowadays, and the freak ones were controling the society

Finding out the robot that killed them wasn’t joe, really blew my mind.
This has an attention to detail and world-building that is stunning. No wonder David has gathered so many views and subscribers. It really is the best of RUclips when this type of animation is allowed to flourish, outside studios and broadcasting, with voices like this one given a platform and a chance to reach out. Top drawer.
Tbh, I also laughed at the fact that they are kissing and it’s all romantic while a person is getting murdered in the background....

I would love to see a Being Pretty episode centered around a citizen’s escape, and discovery about the truth of her world, Don’t Feed The Freaks was about an outsider looking in, id love to see a story about an insider looking out. As there are multiple “Matriarchs” I believe that they aren’t actually the ones in control, they are more like overseers, they keep the system together, but didn’t create the system. the system itself must have been created by a far more sinister force. The world of Being Pretty seems post apocalyptic like there was some disaster, wiping out most of humanity, and whoever or whatever made the system organized the last of humanity into these little cookie cutter Towns, and tricked these people into following this system, so that was my theory/idea on Being Pretty, I really hope David sees this....
Molten Fredbear heck- I really like that idea a lot. I would love to see a short like that too!
@@SunnyTheOpossum perhaps whoever set it in place is absent, and so it still functions on, like a good machine. It doesn't need a leader, at least not once it's in place.
Kind of like the Borg Colective
Ya like maybe either an exceptionable kid/adult running away and actually getting out before they are killed and made into whatever the heck those human head things were and we get to follow them as they discover about the outside world and try to figure out why everything is so broken and maybe at the end they either die or something like that since it’s autodale so it’s gonna be creepy in some way
It would be really good for world building seeing someone who is at least kind of familiar with “normal” life unlike the traveling man and now we get to see what these ruins mean from this persons perspective we get to see their reaction
Heck maybe it would scare them enough that they would go back to autodale now thinking autodale’s way is the only way to really survive in their world lest it turn into the hell that waits outside the borders
@@thegaminggirls2154 It would also be interesting to see if the machiene that is Autodale would even accept someone who has left the city and how they would react to that rejection.
I really like how you said that you weren’t going to end the series with a revolution. I wrote my own dystopian story, And I believe that most dystopian stores Shouldn’t have a happy ending. It’s realistic. These people in autodale were raised with this mentality, and it’s hard to break that. In my story, as Quinn goes off to be publicly executed, she has some revelations. She sees that the world isn’t a utopia. It isnt the best. What does she do? She draws in her last breath and thanks the world for having her live. She doesn’t try to escape, warm everyone about the “corrupt” society, she realizes that everyone is happy, and that interfering will just end up bad for everyone. It’s a realistic ending, not some fairy tale ending. A dystopian story is an anti-utopia, so it should end sadly, not with everything being “solved”. Great work with your story. I love it.
Well there goes my sadness coming out for about a month lmao
I have a dystopia too but its extremely light-harded (i want to adapt it for a musical so it has goofy villains and everything). I hope one day I can make a serious dystopia like these shorts, 1984 or Fahrenheit 451, because I love that type of stories.
WinxBattles Season3 Your story sounds interesting. I’m sure it would be great to read. :)
Adam Sduuvacuum someday I’ll put it up somewhere. Until then, I’ll have to make other things
What’s the title of your novel? i would to read it
There's another dimension to the horror I just noticed: The handymen are more compassionate than the humans. The humans are completely ok seeing their people be murdered one by one in front of them. They don't even value themselves. But the handymen, they at least say "deepest apologies Robinsons, but duty calls.". The handymen at least view the deaths as regrettable.
These people are so beyond empathy, they don't care about seeing other humans from their community die. The handymen, they do seem to care. Compassion towards other people has been automated and removed from people.
I disagree. They are brainwashed, they think this is compassion in a sense. The robots are well... robots. They have no feelings and no compassion and all of the “empathy” is merely what they are programmed to say. I think the robot act like that as part of the brainwashing. If these robots are nice and kind why would hey hurt us? The Robinsons obviously loved each other and their son but they are too brainwashed to see the failures and violence of the system.
Also thats a automatic phrase, he hjust choose it because of the moment
The compassion of the handymen only goes so far though, if you try to rebel against the system... No kindness for you.
The handyman don't care about their death either. From what I understood, at least, his "deepest apologies but duty calls" apply to him interrupting their kiss, not him killing them. For him, killing them, is just like refusing to dance with them, or interrupting a movie by arriving early, a minor inconvenience that, as a modelrobot, he apologize for.
I've always have wondered like how auto-dale came into being and why everyone is so ok with being in this machine. My theory is that people in the 50s were in some sort of apocalyptic situation where a larger chunk of humanity got wipped out.. they didn't know what to do without a leader (Like the president) and made the handy men and Matriarch because they needed order in their lives, and once they got order in their lives they were satisfied, and then the cycle started and no one questioned it.
I'm sorry if thats completely wrong but I just love thinking about the story and what could have happened to start the cycle. Love the work and animations
Sounds reasonable
I don't think there is a direct connection here. Despite having strong values, people in the 50s were anything but authoritarian. Remember the age of McCarthyism and anti Communist rhetoric, while many of you may see this simply as conformity, that is not all it is. The USSR and China were Communist controlled and run by an authoritarian government, which I find even more reminiscent to what we see in Autodale than 50s America. Communist gray, one singular dictator and those who don't fit in are executed; this is very similar to both the Nazis and the USSR.

Fantastic job as always, especially for something I didn’t even know existed a week ago.
There will be no uprising for sure, but perhaps this series could end on a... more interesting note. I know you’ve made great efforts analyzing the dystopia, and finding what you feel is the most horrifying aspect of it, maybe the ending could extenuate that premise?
This should be released in print. This looks so well made and so professional.
I love the “making of videos” they always inspire me to write and are intriguing and funny to watch :)

Yesterday, in my youtube recommendations I found your "Model Citizen" animation. And within only a day. I fell in love with your animations. Unfortunately I cannot support you on Patreon because of my country's money exchange. (Dollar is 7 times more expensive then our money) But I will support you in other ways. Keep up the good work. You became my favorite animator within a day. ^u^
Me too! I was amazed cuz I never saw anything so dark and mysterious, so I was in awe
Honestly I thought the kid from "no monsters" was the person who got labeled exceptional and got killed and then converted and strapped up with the matriarch
Same
the kid wasnt exactly that person showed, bc its already confirmed child was male. Exceptional adult was female, and had unique beauty marks that matched the girl in the storybook
1950s think that kid will just be kid, kid will be normal, so kid wont be murdered in this and named Uglies.
The thing about The Uglies that is so perfect is that even if, by some unlikely chance, you manage to fit in as a "Model Citizen", it doesn't matter because eventually, once your kid has a family of their own, you become ugly as well. The whole perfection complex is so awesome in this series because it is highly emphasized yet it doesn't matter because your life will still inevitably end without your control of anything
Actually, being a model citizen is super easy. But eventually, you will no longer be capable of the labors of being a model citizen.
Question, how does multiple kids work? Because having just one kid means there's only one to replace two, and having three kids means having one extra. Is it balanced by the robots across the whole city? As in, if one family has one child another must have three? Because that seems difficult to regulate. In a three kid home, is the extra simply disposed of? Is the whole family disposed of, because they have disrupted the cycle, and are therefore ugly?
Also, the imperfections that are detectable before adulthood, are those kids killed then, or when they become adults? Because we only see adults in the death pits.
I suspect the matriarch plans for this. There are probably functional adults not allowed to have kids due to genetic issues. When they die their defective genes aren't carried on. Some families with exceptional genetics are probably allowed to have extra children. Of course then again all children may be genetically engineered and given to the parents rather than being born the natural way.
@@icedriver2207 I feel like if they had a genetic disease they would be uglies
@@teezeehayes4155 Defective genes aren't necessarily a disease, but in a closed population you might not want them to spread. Loyal and functional citizens might be more useful than dead ones. I think without knowing why they need people we will never have a clear answer.
Icedriver If you watched “Being Pretty” they kill sterile adults
I would assume if there's a surplus that it'll be rebalanced by the right number of adults being labeled ugly
"My name is David and this..."
*throws sketch book on the table* "is a big sketch book"
Me in art class lmao. Seriously though wonder full job! You are so underrated and I hope to see more like this. Also when showing all the "uglies" I found it interresting that no childeren were standing in line (not that I feel like there should be) but do the robots wait until a child is 18 to decide if their imperfect? As surely if the parents felt something was wrong they would turn their own child in because as you said "everyones loyal."
I mean, the parents job is to create a model citizen, they probably just let the parents do what it takes to turn them perfect, no need to waste a potential perfect person
@@Josuh True.
Christian Stewart then that begs the question, what happens to parents who fail this screening process. What if something is wrong genetically? In being pretty there is an “ugly” man in the pit for being sterile, so if it wasn’t for the loyalty, would potential uglies avoid that process? To avoid being executed?
But what of the uglies labeled “disfigured” surely if a baby is born with a physical defect they’d be marked ugly immediately? I’m so stuck on that detail...
@@thedotintheletteri Kids probably have a separate line from adults. You can't expect an infant - even an Ugly infant - to stand in a line for hours waiting to be killed.

that reveal of the final bot not being Joe shook me. i did not consent to being caught off-guard like that my reality is a LIE.
jokes aside, in all honesty though it's amazing how you'd purposely distinguish them like that just to further the world's theme. you could've easily copy-pasted the same model but you _deliberately_ made sure the one at the end didn't have scratches, and that "Joe" did.
bloody amazing lad. i look forward to what you have planned; autodale or otherwise.
NEVER sell this to hollywood! The creative genius in this series is awe inspiring. I enjoy the love independent animators put into their works, but THIS series is head and shoulders above the rest.

This is so unsettling, but I love it so much. This entire series has so much meaning and invokes such strong feeling. I find the robot enforcers, Joe especially, incredibly terrifying in that they check the homes regularly presumably to look for ‘uglies’ and also that they behave like the model citizens. Seeing Joe interact with Junior and high five him made me so uncomfortable, and I found the eyes to be super unsettling. I don’t have the right words to express the way I feel about this. Beautifully done!

The only way I can see this series getting a happy ending: A group of handymen becoming fully sentient and self-aware.
The citizens are lost.
The city is immortal.
Everything is either indestructible or already destroyed.
Except, if a single handyman discovers art, beauty or even faith.
It would certainly be ironic yet, in my opinion, an interesting way to get some sort of hope.
Though I very much doubt this would happen considering the fact that there doesn't seem to be any innovation going on.
No experimentation with the machines or the system which makes perfect sense considering that innovation requires innovation.
And refinement implies there are/were flaws, wich this city probably doesn't want to acknowledge.
Even if there is innovation being done, machines finding humanity usually happens in stories because people are making machines that look, act or are meant to be human.
That said, a group of robots escaping the hivemind and building an artsy city with freaks would be a very interesting event.
Would the original city be hostile to them? indifferent? friendly even?
Dunno, it probably would never happen, doesn't mean its not fun to think about though.
I would write a story about it myself but my own projects have already gotten my schedule full.
Should the uploader read this:
Hi, huge fan.
Art is about causing emotions and you certainly managed to cause a few within me with envy being in the top five.
I am an aspiring writer and I would like to ask one simple question.
What is the best way to kill an idea?
I keep coming up with new scenarios, ideas and characters that I want to put into my projects.
But then I discover that one doesn't work. So I take it out but then a scene that relied on that idea doesn't work either anymore.
Things stop making sense, yet keeping the idea would just create plotholes that I cannot fill or just make the story unnecessarily complicated.
And when its whole characters or large parts of the story that at the begging and in isolation are amazing but through the mutational process of expanding on the setting as a whole just cannot find a place to settle in.
Yet I am too invested in (as these characters or scenarios are frequently the very reason I begin on a project.) to remove or heavily alter them!
Sometimes when I read a story I feel like I am the only one struggling with this and that just cannot be the case.
So, TL:DR Your stories have very good pacing and have gotten in the goldilocks zone of enough detail to make it feel alive, believable and thought-provoking without getting too complicated or needing exposition.
If I could get Patreon I would check out the sketchbook but I cant so...
Sorry if this was way too long a comment.

I never noticed that it wasn't the same bot. That one got me pretty hard. Even when watching this video I knew what was coming at the pit scene but that silence still caught me off guard. When he shook Joe's hand that one actually hurt me, cause it showed how uterlly powerless people can be against what they believe because even if they are perfectly capable of fighting they don't want do. In their minds fighting is not only dangerous but also completely pointless and dumb.
