I saw this new generation at my local dealer and I have to admit, the S550 all around is a better looking vehicle. The rear light with that sunken in look, I am not a fan of and the interior to me is just out of sorts. With that being said, I give Ford a lot of credit for at least continuing with their V8 muscle car. Updates may not be for everyone but at least you have the option to get a V8 still.

While I was originally super excited for the new S650 Mustangs, S550 > S650 just from price alone. These have no reason being $15-20k more then a base to loaded S550 5.0, even your Bullitt fully loaded makes these seem silly. Great review as always though Matt was excited for you to review one of these nonetheless!
Jeez, the prices on these things just make used options feel like so much of a better deal. I know it's not really a fair comparison, but c'mon, it's a real option.
I personally like the exterior of the S650 quite a bit more, but that interior is absolutely a dealbreaker for me. Other than that, this is quite the special car.
Tell me you don't watch a large HDTV or use a large screen smart phone. Most people do because they like new updated technology. I actually skipped buying a dated S550 to wait for a Dark Horse. After 10 years and all the negative reviews of the S550 interior. It was a time for a redesigned and upgraded interior and aggressive exterior design because from sells numbers. Thank you so much for being upfront with the carryover stuff. As a true enthusiast would know, this car is NOT all new, even though engineers and Ford PR would try to make you believe it's all new! I still have yet to see an S650 in person other than at the Denver Dealer show in April.
Big ups to the owner for letting you review it! Sounds lovely but I feel like they’re straying away from mustang heritage. Guess they did that plenty already tho
Love the exterior and the Fox body gauges, just wish the rest of the interior was executed a bit better. Big ups to the owner for providing this for a review!
I saw a new mustang the other night with the performance pack and thought my eyes fooled me when I saw cloth seats inside, I guess I was completely right
Great video this new gen looks amazing. I have a suggestion for all the car reviewers out there: would you consider doing a charging pad test for those of us who have wireless phones with cases? With the new iPhones and other phones with nice cameras, some phones with cases never seem to lay flat enough anymore to work on wireless charging pads. Awesome review Matt. I was waiting to hear your thoughts on the new 24 Mustang. To me the biggest let down is the interior compared to the S550 generation, the new interior feels cheaper than the s550, they lost the awesome metal switch selector for the modes and replaced with a cheap plastic panel that moves back and forth once you press any of the buttons. I've sat on a few S650 and that's my biggest take away, especially for how expensive they really are. The screens also look so generic, very similar to many of the new cars coming out now. The exterior looks great tho and the car seems to be performing okay with the new 10 speed trans considering that tuning is still unavailable. We should all be thankful that the mustang with the coyote V8 survived and seems like it will be here for years to come.
GT stang definitely the better value if you can get one at a reasonable price; however, besides looks and sound (both subjective), the m2 is superior imo, but should be more compared to the Darkhorse pricewise.
I'm pretty happy with my 2024 GT Premium Performance Pack in Rapid Red. The last Mustang I owned was a 2003 Stage 2 Roush. So, this one is a nice upgrade from what I remember of the 2003. I considered the Dark Horse until I saw the 10k dealer markup. Then, I discovered the mod to remove the carbon traps in the intake and immediately achieve nearly the same HP numbers as the Dark Horse.
God that tablet for a gauge cluster looks so stupid, why not just keep the same digital dash that the S550 had? Or better yet, analog gauges. I actually like how the Camaro had analog gauges but also a screen in the center of them. Best of both worlds IMO
I thought it was the new Honda Accord for a minute or two. And then I thought it was a Camaro for ANOTHER minute or two. Talk about an identity crisis.
Great review Matt ! As an owner of The S550 FN I found it was millions of times better than FM , different engine injection system and bigger CC more power ect , Im gonna wait for the second version of this S650, Ford say coming in 2026 and this will be the last hurrah for GT 5.0 and will end in 2028 . Its sure to be coming with more HP and different cabin set up .Like they did from FM to the better FN model. I think S650's Tesla like screen are a bit of a Ford experiment, to see how people embrace it , a really strange move from Ford in my view , as they are defiantly not evoking the Mustang legacy . Hopefully the next one can bring some of the Mustang iconic legacy back , with buttons and switches and digital dash . Your right S550 FN brakes PP are super grabby are excellent .One complaint with my S550 FM 5.0 GT PP optioned with magna ride and active exhaust, was the 10 sp auto wasn't quick enough from 1st to 2nd there was a noticeable annoying delay when using paddles . Maybe because its not an instant changing capable duel clutch set up just the older tech torque converter trans ? , is why it causes this delay ? but Hopeful Ford will address this in these newer S650 models coming .
Love the exterior especially the rear end. Not a fan of the gimmicky screens. Looks like a video game setup. SMH Having to use a touch screen for nearly everything is ridiculous. Having to wait 15 seconds for the screen to come on is also ridiculous. At a minimum they should’ve kept the basic HVAC controls on manual dials. Should’ve stuck with a vintage dash to keep the tradition alive. In 1996 I bought my first and only mustang, a new GT black on black w 5 speed manual w upgraded 18 in rims. 4.6 L V8, think it had like 210 hp which is so anemic but it was loaded with Torque.
Just seeing Matt’s Bullitt next to the new one I think the old one would still be much choice + way cheater for 55k I could probably find a decent GT350.
Rear quarter panels look more Gen 6 Camaro than Mustang. A nice-looking car, however not sure how that this S650 Mustang will age with those screens, hopefully the screens will prove reliable and not age like an Atari. Appreciate your honest review, exposing the good and the bad.
The car is beautiful but the alignment of the front end really annoys me! If you look at the hood line/ headlight line you will see that the left side droops!!! Mine does too, I noticed how bad it was after the first time I washed it. Thank God mine is all black!!
Great review! One minor gripe I have with my 2018 GT Conv PP is steering feel. I know you said you like the steering better but would love to hear more about that.
I'm surprised that you are the only one reviewing this s650 that actually said you liked the steering feel and response. Most reviewers complain saying that it's more numb this generation. Also, I have rebuttal about not keeping the interior a nod to the past; Ford said they took inspiration from the Foxbody generation when designing the s650, so can we truly say that it's not a refresher of its past?_?
I must have missed Ford talking about Foxbody inspiration for the interior aside from the gauge mode. Thanks for the info! Steering feel is pretty comparable to most modern cars with electric steering, but a quicker rack always makes the steering more responsive and makes a car feel more lively.
@@MattMaranMotoring Yeah, if you look at the Foxbody's dash design the only thing this s650 is missing is the passenger side shelf but everything else is spot on, making that gap between screens on the base model more of an eyesore. I wish you could have tried out the electronic e-brake because I just saw the vlog of Vaughn tuning it to feel perfect for the public; which now I can strongly say Ford will have that as a future feature where the driver will be able to adjust the tension and grab point of that electrical brake from the infotainment center.
My biggest gripe is the lack of simple controls with knobs and switches for important functions like the AC and heating systems. Also I prefer Using buttons or knobs for the audio. I think having to use the screen for these functions makes driving dangerous b you distracting you from the road.
Matt, So Happy, you got to test drive the new Mustang S650 and give your thoughts. You have had I believe four S550's in total so you know them well. Quick question on your S550 Mustangs that you had, did you have any have air conditioning issues? My friend down Florida had a Air conditioning failure on his, and some have said they had a/c compressor issues. Anyway, I am very Happy the Mustang is still around, however, Matt I agree with you. Your Mustang Bullitt and the Mach I are the best of modern tech, looks, and interior design. I wish Ford stayed a little bit more traditional with this new one. That is one reason I love My beautiful Lincoln Continental, same thing exterior and interior beautiful American design. The screen was not glued to the top of the dash, the screen was placed in the same spot as your Mustang, very logical, low and in the center and it looks nice, a nice flush dash. I know people bust me, mainly because of jealousy, but the Continental was made along side your Mustang in the same Flat Rock Michigan plant. SO I may not ever get a Mustang, but I love my luxurious, comfy, Lincoln Continental. It is the closest I have come to a Mustang, at least it is made in the same plant. LOL Love the Continental, just as much as you love your Bullitt. To conclude, great review, thank you to the viewer for letting you test it. I am not knocking his car, great car, great color, I personally I would get a Mach I because I like the more traditional interior. Long Live The American Pony Car, Long Live gasoline powered V8 Mustang, what a great sound to hear. P.S. One other thing, my Lincoln Continental of course has Pirelli Cinturato P7 tires, because Ford loves Pirelli on their higher end products and I have to say they handle great , super quiet. Once again the Continental is a large, heavy, all wheel drive, luxury car, but they hold the road well when I push the car, I have kept Pirelli tires on it, not sure all Pirelli tires are bad. However On my Suzuki and Subaru's I love my Continental Extremecontact dws06 tires, great combination of traction, handling, yet quiet, I have been using them for years.
Thanks for watching Rich! My 3rd S550 (2016 GT) had the A/C go out but thankfully it was still under warranty. You know I love the Continentals too, glad to hear you’re still enjoying it!
Thanks the review it's timely. I'm here in Australia & I'm tossing up the idea of a demo S550 or waiting on the new model that we will be getting in the first quarter of 2024. I'm not sure I really like the futuristic dash & the rear end to justify the extra $$$. We pay a lot more than you guys so you can add an extra $15-20k on the US price of each model. I'm also leaning towards the outgoing model because I feel like it's more Mustang than the new one??? Cheers😊
Matt we have the DH S650’s . First time to have the Handling Package Pony’s . Love the way it hugs the road just wondering how much it’s going to cost when it comes time to replace those tires . Thanks for your videos on any Mustang .
I like the styling of the new gen..people complain really it don't look that bad off from the s550 which I love also. The lights in the back will grow on me but got to have the wing!
Amazing to me how the A10 still lags on upshifts near redline. That is the difference between a European ZF and these A10 transmissions. At least you can still option a manual.
Thanks for that review. After that im even more sure that this gen is bad, down part of front looks awkward, taillights are half baked and looks bad, same for more plastic on bigger difusor. But inside is really a bad thing those screens looks tragic because of reflections, laggy system, nothing special, crappy buttons. Yeah car has some cool things thats better than S550 but theres more bad tstuff thsts more important. Im staying with my S550. Maybe after lifting version will be better
I compare to S550 a lot in this video but personally I have zero interest in owning an S650. The interior is a complete dealbreaker for me, as is the 10k higher price for a very similar experience.
Test drove a mustang gt base model. Had the 3.15 gears and was ok but 3.55 is what you want but that's expensive. I would rather get a fully loaded camaro for 45k than a base model stang for 47k
I love American performance cars. I was about to say muscle cars but to be honest. The Mustang and Camaro crossed over from muscle to sports cars years ago at this point. For the Camaro, the 5th Gen Z28 in 14’ was the mark and for the z Mustang I’d would say 2012 with the BOSS 302 benchmarked against the M3( when it still had the 8400 red line 8 cylinder. The BOSS destroyed the M3 in public testing after its release. I even like the Dodge V8’s although those will forever be branded muscle cars, and that’s a uniquely beautiful thing. I, like everyone else, was unsure about the 7th Gen design at first. However, unlike many others still professing to hold that view, it did not take me but a few views of this thing and I was sold. Every single time a manufacturer changes to a new mark on cars we love, it’s natural to resist. We are familiar and comfy with the old design. But one day, suddenly, the S550 will look, well, outdated. The 7th Gen will look ultra modern even though it will have been out for some time then. Bought my wife a 2021 Tahoe in Aug of 21’. My son wanted me to get the 2020 because he was used to the design. Now, now the Tahoe we went with was def the right choice per my son who is now 17. I love the S550, I am driving my second GT premium PP1 and it’s such a great car. But given the chance, I would trade UP in a flash. It’s a gorgeous car and honestly, the envy of Aspiring and existing American performance car enthusiasts
11.3? Idk if I'm believing that just because tuned, headers, E85 mustangs run similar times. Also the 0-60 3.7 with an avg 4.08 doesn't jive. Makes no difference to me I'm just saying I've been around these cars and none of that adds up
I was thinking the same thing, a 12.3 or around that i will believe easily, but from what I've been seeing these are slower than the 18-24 s550s, I live in Tucson az, and I've gotten 12.260s and thats not in great elevation here
The look has grown on me too a little but I still love my S550 look better I do.. I don't know why but I guess it the Tech that i don't really like.. Would I like a bigger back up Camera Def, but that's it.. There's just way to much going on in there with all the Nvidia Ipad themed look.. I just love my Real Gages and the way they say ground speed, and the oil pressure and VP gage too.. I love the Old school mix, and the Body lines down the side of the S550's are so sexy.. I also think they went to far with the tail lights but what ever.. Not a hater to each his own.. They do look nice and mean in the front..
Great review, you are really good at this. I'm considering upgrading my 2019 GT (base) to the latest and greatest 2024 Dark Horse or Gt. I need to keep factory warranty so I will buy a new car with all the options instead of adding the bolt on-s myself to my 2019 and possibly voiding the warranty. I have the extended Ford warranty on my 2019 also.
Thanks, I'm glad you like them! I film reviews all over the country but I'm based in Pittsburgh and do a majority of my reviews there. It's been a couple years since I've been to New Jersey.
It's the same car with a screen update and bumper refresh, with a MASSIVE price hike!! It's absurd how much they are asking for a Mustang. A loaded one is ZL1 money. There are other cars that are a lot better with manual transmissions. Thanks for for making me realize the 2023 BMW M2, Nissan Z, C8 Corvette, and Supras are really great cars! Most of them offer a manual or DCT. It's been a nice ride Ford!
Mach 1 for under 50k is pretty good. But an AWD M240i. Would walk this in reverse. So maybe base 5.0 is the way to go or previous gen Mach 1 for under 50k this at 55 I couldn’t do it. Just fun when going straight the M240i at this price is hard to beat
Many think the m240i looks weird, especially the rear. M240i is quicker 0-60 but the GT is faster after 60mph. Both are great platforms for modding. That said, I'd prefer the M240i xdrive as a daily. I also love the characteristics of the B58. I may be biased a bit, as I currently own a X3m40i.
I'm just not going to like the screens. The size doesn't bother me, just how they're implemented. Get past that and I really like the new Mustang. My money would go to the Mach 1, but only barely.
I REALLY wish Ford had put actual knobs/buttons for the HVAC. Also, really wish they had added AWD like the Nissan GTR. Overall, I feel like Ford did a lazy job of coming up with this generation. I wouldn't even call this a "next generation ". I'd call it a gen 3 S550. Lastly, I totally hate the taillights, they horrible!
Every RUclips car reviewer on modern cars "I really don't like how they've removed physical buttons and force you into the screen" --- every car manufacturer "lets remove more physical buttons and force customers to the software UI, customers will love it!" 🤨😡
What do you mean the Camaro is dead and the mustang is the only one around? They are making the Camaro for 2024 and they are making a collector sedation package that looks very sporty.

Electric cars are already failing the market and proving too expensive to mass produce. It's not the answer everyone thought it was. @@Accost2u

In 1996 I bought my first and only mustang, a new GT black on black w 5 speed manual w upgraded 18 in rims. 4.6 L V8, think it had like 210 hp which is so anemic but it was loaded with Torque.
It’s all about the V8 experience. That’s what you’re paying the big bucks for.
Just seeing Matt’s Bullitt next to the new one I think the old one would still be much choice + way cheater for 55k I could probably find a decent GT350.
Wow that is pricey. I'm so happy I was able to get my GT PP 6 speed with the active exhaust for 45k brand new in 2021.
Rear quarter panels look more Gen 6 Camaro than Mustang. A nice-looking car, however not sure how that this S650 Mustang will age with those screens, hopefully the screens will prove reliable and not age like an Atari. Appreciate your honest review, exposing the good and the bad.
I'd buy it if it was a crossover, AWD and CVT with the 1.0 Ecoboost.
The feel isn’t too different, but the quicker ratio makes it feel sharper and makes the car more eager to change direction.
All electric steering cars will never feels as good as a real steering rack.
Looks way better than the dark horse in front especially!
Great video fantastic looking car and very well explained good on you Matt thank you very much from Sydney Australia 😅😊
Thanks for watching Nick!
My biggest gripe is the lack of simple controls with knobs and switches for important functions like the AC and heating systems. Also I prefer
Using buttons or knobs for the audio. I think having to use the screen for these functions makes driving dangerous b you distracting you from the road.
Great review Matt. The looks are growing on me. That car sounds amazing which is what I loved most about my s550.
Thanks Pete!
Cheers😊
Like everything except the dashboard
But it's still cool😮
Matt we have the DH S650’s . First time to have the Handling Package Pony’s . Love the way it hugs the road just wondering how much it’s going to cost when it comes time to replace those tires . Thanks for your videos on any Mustang .
Man i got so excited for this video, until I saw that it's an auto... Would've been interesting to see you compare the manual to your Bullitts manual
I'm hoping to review a manual next year. Ford's just very slow with sending me press cars.
These things look so good IRL, pics and vids don't do them justice. It's m
Basically a more muscular, and fluid s550.
Looks great other then the stripes, those belong on a Shelby only imo
Nine job on review as a 2019 GT owner.
Hey Matt, how does this compare overall to your Bullitt? Would you give the Bullitt up for a2024 GT or DH?
I compare to S550 a lot in this video but personally I have zero interest in owning an S650. The interior is a complete dealbreaker for me, as is the 10k higher price for a very similar experience.
This is more like the LCI as opposed to the new generation. Calling this a new gen is a bit misleading on Ford part
That interior looks so bad. Those HVAC controls are the worst I’ve seen on a modern car. It sounds really good and looks really good!
Test drove a mustang gt base model. Had the 3.15 gears and was ok but 3.55 is what you want but that's expensive. I would rather get a fully loaded camaro for 45k than a base model stang for 47k
Spec'd nearly the same as the one I just ordered. Going to be an impatient few months.
0-60 in 3.7???? Maybe when being towed by a Cybertruck...
Hey Matt how’s the ride quality compared to the base. Is it a lot to give up
How does the performance and driving experience compare overall to your Bullitt?
The Mustang is and always will be a Pony Car.
11.3? Idk if I'm believing that just because tuned, headers, E85 mustangs run similar times. Also the 0-60 3.7 with an avg 4.08 doesn't jive. Makes no difference to me I'm just saying I've been around these cars and none of that adds up
Agreed, must have been an epic downhill
Hi Matt does the body feel stiffer less flex more solid PS happy new year 😎
Slightly, but I wouldn't say it's a big difference. Happy New Year!
It would be cool if it was in dark green
That cut in the rear reminds me of the current generation Hyundai Elantra unfortunately.
Lmfao @ these TV screens they keep slapping into these cars
Hey Matt always enjoy your videos do you test drive in Hunterdon County nj?
Thanks, I'm glad you like them! I film reviews all over the country but I'm based in Pittsburgh and do a majority of my reviews there. It's been a couple years since I've been to New Jersey.
I really wish they would’ve kept that dual cowl
So do you need 4 catch cans since im assuming theres two pcv systems 😅
Good review
Most people’s wages have not kept up. My 2019 GT vert had a MSRP of $53,200. Now it would be upper 60’s. Competing in Audi, BMW price land.
Dash looks like Chit. Give me a 2023 or older Stang (Manual) or a used C8 Vette.
Love those wheels.
Shouldn't it have the recaro seats if you got the performance package????
@@ms3ben yes obviously a daily the m is the way to go
11.3? No
I prefer the full screen not the split but it’s cool tho
I'm just not going to like the screens. The size doesn't bother me, just how they're implemented. Get past that and I really like the new Mustang. My money would go to the Mach 1, but only barely.
I have a S550 and really appreciate the smaller screen and manual control knobs. I'm happy with my 2017 and plan on keeping it.
Matt, I'm curious to know what your personal cars are since you have had exposure to so many sporty cars
I have the 2019 Mustang Bullitt that I reference in this video.
@@MattMaranMotoring Oh yes, somehow I imagined that you have like three cars though haha
@@revaholic the only other one is the wife's car, a Mach-E.
@@MattMaranMotoring SubaruWRXFan has become FordMustangFan!
It would look so much better without that panel gap at the front. Despite that it still looks good. Shame they ruined the interior though!
Stripes on a new mustang looks kind of weird to me?😊
Dam had to be 10-11 years since I’ve seen a video from this man omg 😭😭 his brz days
Welcome back! Still posting 3 videos a week!
Shout out to the 5 foot 9 average height gang😂
Every RUclips car reviewer on modern cars "I really don't like how they've removed physical buttons and force you into the screen" --- every car manufacturer "lets remove more physical buttons and force customers to the software UI, customers will love it!" 🤨😡
What do you mean the Camaro is dead and the mustang is the only one around? They are making the Camaro for 2024 and they are making a collector sedation package that looks very sporty.
Production is done in January.
