Trying underpainting a la Hailey Bieber

- Опубликовано: 23 фев 2023
- Sup peeps. Today I'm trying out Mary Phillip's 'underpainting' technique for a flawless base. If you're not familiar, Mary is responsible for those gorgeously natural looking makeup looks on people like Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner. This definitely something everyone should try at least once! 🙌🏻

OK I don't know how to explain this but your under eye circles are so beautiful they look like a natural make up that blends so well with the rest of your skin texture and u genuinely look so pretty
People with a natural darkness around their eyes are so lucky
@@HeyitsBri_I have them and it’s horrible. I can’t go out without concealer without people asking me if I had enough sleep
That’s how Patrick Starrr introduced his blush trio palettes. The cream goes under your foundation. Scott Barnes taught Tati this technique, and Jennifer Lopez, his most famous client, did this in her Vogue (I think) video. This has been around forever, Mary just made it popular.
And drag!!! Don’t forget the drag!!!!!!!!!
@@renegoss4650 yes it's a drag term
Nina Uhbi always underpaints. She uses cream contour and blushes under the foundation and powder contour and blushes over the foundation. It looks really good. I can’t wait to see yours because I know it will look beautiful!
Just what I needed.
Having an anxiety attack and in need of a good distraction. Thanks Alex! I love you 💙
😔 Here for you love ❤️
@@AlexandraAnele you are. You have no idea.
Sending love from a fellow anxiety haver. You got this ❤️❤️
@@gorlgoyle thank you ☺️
yes ma’am… i know you posted this a while ago, but sending love as well. i also use alex’s vids to help with anxiety, especially before i try and sleep. which you know, isn’t fun ❤
This is a very very pretty look. The minimal coverage and tone, the perfect pink lip and cheek to complement your natural lid color. Topped off with bare eyelashes-which is a personal favorite that brings so much youth to everyone’s face.
I love this look for you, me, and really every woman.
So grateful for your uploads... here at lunch, trying to relax at work and there you are! Thanks for being REAL.
Your skin looks so good. Whatever routing your doing is working so good. I have never tried underpainting but this tutorial is tempting me. Your a great teacher, thanks for this one Alex 💖
I LOVE your voiceovers. I think you‘re among the three most authentic, relatable and hilarious RUclipsrs that I know and it‘s a joy to listen and watch!! Greetings from 🇦🇹 Austria
I am amazed by the perfection of your brows in every video. It never gets old.
I love this technique, and I have been doing it for years. It looks so natural and I love how you don't get the harsh lines from the other products.
This has nothing to do with the video but I keep meaning to comment and say that I used to watch makeup videos ALL the time and then I sort of just stopped watching, except for one or two creators (basically you and rawbeautykristi) and I think the reason I’ve stuck with you is because of how real and authentic and chill you are and how your tutorials are ACTUALLY helpful. You have taught me so much about actually helpful and useful makeup techniques that I’ve continued to use. Whenever I feel like I’m in a rut with my makeup I know I can watch one of your videos for inspiration and great tips. Just sayin’ you’re legit and I love your channel 😘
loved this look! Tbh I would watch an updated version as well now that you've tried few times more and can give more advice on the products that would work the best! I feel like I've always thought that a skin tint would be better but then I have acne and acne marks so I haven't tried this technique yet because i don't want to feel sad if I can't achieve the clean/flawless skin look that is the point of the makeup sob
tried this technique out a couple weeks ago and I love it! It takes me out of being bored of doing the same makeup routine, and I love the natural look of it
I like the voice over for this kind of video. You are so supportive and encouraging! I love this look on you.
Just an FYI- Morphes new vegan line has a sponge that is the same shape as the Elcie cosmetics one and it’s half the price
I don't know why, but I live to just listen to these videos. I don't even wear makeup, I don't even watch the video, but the audio captivates me.
Supposedly “under painting” was coined by Kevin Aucoin decades ago but I suspect it was a drag term 🤔
This might be a long shot, but you’re my favorite makeup artist and I was wondering if you could do a video of alternative bridal makeup. Like, Euphoria inspired looks for the unconventional bride?
You’re stunning! Always enjoy your videos ♥️
You are just naturally pretty every look looks amazing on you u can do no wrong
I think I love your full glam much more than everyday looks. You have an amazing ability to make super glam full face of makeup look natural 🤔. Which is not the case with many many so called famous influencers playing with heavy glam and outrageous eyeshadows 🤔. Xx from Australia
I’ve got to try this! Best explanation I’ve seen.
I’m obsessed with your earrings ❤
Honestly loved this way more than I thought. I don’t usually choose a natural look over something that’s not but this looks incredible!!
Your skin is and looks amazing. This foundation looks flawless on you 🤗
Gosh you are just so naturally freaking beautiful.
Looooove this. I don’t have any cream bronzer but imma get some and try this.
I love this look on you. Gives you a very beautiful glow. ❤
Alex I love you so much!!!when I am watching your videos and you are speaking live is my best 👌
Alexandra you look fabulous!!
Woman!!! You have skillzzzzz. I need to know how to do my make up like that. You are my favorite MUA...You need to teach a master class.
You have such a soothing voice. And this video is pretty mesmerizing. Nice.
Girl that skin THOUGH! FIRE
You are stunning girl! ❤
Tysm for this honest review loved it . 💖
skin goals 🖤
😭🙏🏼
Love it Alex 💕
Stunning!
Gorgeous as usual😍
Cool video…first time watching your channel…pretty awesome to watch and listen to a someone do makeup who isn’t irritating …idk what it is exactly it is but it’s like ur funny, obviously super “cool”, easy to listen to, love the dry humor, and (random comparison alert) you remind me of Nicole Richie (probably not spelling that right), and most importantly…you’re really good at makeup….what else could a girl (who’s supposed to be writing a research paper but instead is pretending to have tons of free time to watch YT videos) ask for?! I can’t think of a single thing! New sub! ❤
😭😂 Thank you so much! I definitely used to get ‘Nicole Richie’ all the time but I haven’t in awhile! Glad you’re here love, now go get back to that paper! 🙌🏼🧡
I love all your videos Alex
I would love to see a video where you do your best makeup for flawless skin and then showing it under different lights and with close ups
Recently found your channel and I absolutely love you ❤️ you're gorgeous 😍
😩 Thank you Tammie 🙏🏼
Thanks for sharing. Your videos are always 10 out of 10
Beautiful!!
Stunning ❤
Haven’t tried it this way but I like putting my highlight under my blush!
So beautiful 💜
The Kim Chi Chic loose powder is great for blurring pores, highly recommend.
I’ve heard that Mary Philips uses the La Mer powder brush to blend the Foundation in. I own the exact same brush, so I gave it a try: my base has never looked better🥰
I’m thinking it’s time for me to try this Elf halo glow! Just turned 30 last month and I’m starting to struggle with creasing as well. Ugh the struggle
Love and appreciate you! ❤
Ill be 35 in october, i feel u. The last 3 years have been a struggle. Try the maybelline fot me concealer snd foundation, best frugstore ive found for creasing. Elf makes a "HD Setting Powder" thst wirks pretty well under the eyes.
The skin is skinnnnning!!!!!
This is stunning!
Also, so therapeutic to watch. Thank you 🙏
Fabulous dahling ❤️
I so appreciate that you brought up that this isn’t new.
Love this tutorial :)
Cutest face shape ever
I love how beautiful and glowy your base is. ❤
Beautiful 💜
You look beautiful!!
Very beautiful look
I have been so afraid of using setting powder! The halo powder looks so natural on you and not powdery at all. Danke for the videos!
I tried it along with u. It looks pretty good
Ok, but I loved this before you even used the foundation! Would love to see this finished without any foundation?? ❤️❤️ beautiful
Gorgeous
Honestly, and maybe it looked different in person, but after the powder...pores who? It looked flawless. Thank you for this tutorial, can't wait to try!
Love that Auric lip stuff (although I think I bought it because of rec from you). +1 to that Milk primer too. I can't make hydrogrip work for me either. I'm struggling with a CT powder, but I will put that one on my list to try!
But you know whose product card never declines for me? Danessa Myricks. Very interested in that blush.
That charlotte tilbury power made your pores vanish. I have to have this powder now. The final look was gorgeous.
I wish an experienced painter would make a video addressing this, but since no one has stepped forward, a snarky comment will have to do. As a traditional painter who is also a pro makeup artist for 25 years, this new push to categorize highlighting, contouring and blush under foundation as "underpainting" is like nails on a chalk board because although highlighting and contouring (in any order) in makeup application share some similarities with the concept of underpainting in art--- in the sense that both involve layering and creating depth---they are totally different techniques used in totally different contexts. Let me clarify:
With highlighting and contouring in makeup (in any order, above or below foundation), we are enhancing the three-dimensional appearance of the face with products that are lighter and darker than the natural skin tone to create the illusion of depth, emphasize features, and reshape the contours of the face. Basically, the goal is to sculpt the face by placing light and shadow to get the desired look.
"Underpainting," on the other hand, specifically refers to a painting technique in traditional visual arts where first layer of paint applied is used to establish values, colors, and composition before adding more detailed layers. Both highlighting and contouring and underpainting do involve layering for the purpose of creating depth and enhancing features, but they really are very different techniques used in very different ways in very different fields. From the traditional artistry perspective, the co-opting of this term has been wild to watch.
Perfect.
Woah I’ve never gotten to one this early 😂 love you!
Ayyy 🙌🏻❤️
@@AlexandraAnele my life has been fulfilled 🥲☺️
I have not tried it but gonna now thanks 💜🌻✌🏻
Passport makeup please! Your tips are the best. Thanks!❤❤
Try the SheGlam Face & Undereye Setting Powder! I would love to see you do a review/tutorial with it! I just got it and I love it & I think you’d love it! It’s cheap & it’s finely milled! 😍😍😍
Alex yur very BEAUTIFUL😍 and amazing at makeup
Thank you for the content
Love the sneeze 😂
Came out beautiful but I honestly think your makeup always looks beautiful no matter the technique! I think the key which you have is being precise and good blending. To me this technique helps actual contour NOT bronzer look more natural but I think bronzer should go on top because it is supposed to warm up the skin not really create dimension such as contour. Idk that’s just my opinion.
This is my first step to my "no-makeup makeup" look except I use a tinted moisturizer instead of a foundation (and I do the underpainting a lil lighter). It looks really natural and also doesn't cover up my freckles so much. I also use a liquid blush and highlight underneath the tinted moisturizer. I spot conceal over the tinted moisturizer using an angled eyeliner brush (the tiny one) to make X and + motions while holding near the end of the brush and tapping any excess in. Note: you gotta be ok with your blemishes show through a bit to use that technique for concealer. It mutes any irritation but it won't be 100% covered. My inner corner gets dark, so I use a similar technique but with a bigger brush. The only powder I use is a translucent powder and I mostly focus that on my nose (and MAYBE cheeks).
Scott Barnes taught me about under painting, but Mary’s version is def a lil different. I prefer Mary’s version
Here for the updated brow routine. 🙋♀️
I know nothing about nothing but I've been doing this recently. I have mature skin (56) and I use a lighter hand these days. I do creamblush and Fenti matchstick contour under my Essence powder foundation.
STUNNING as usual! two randoooo questions for you:
-How does the CT brightening powder wear compared to the mineral based loose laura mercier powder? i always look cakey-est under my eyes where I typically use that
-Is the Mac primer more moisturizer-like? how does it wear? Ive been using the smashbox photo finish and i'm just not crazy about how the makeup looks on top ad don't really like the matte feel
Recommendation: RMS Beauty Primer is gorgeous and even a little firming.
i'm pretty sure that it was scott barns that "invented" the underpainting. tati westbrock has a great video where scott himself does it on her, if anyone is interested
loved the video! i'm curious to know if you ever used a darker shade of your regular foundation to do your contour, i think it may be a good option in terms of blending
Only make up influence I watch now 🎉
i like to watch these kinds of videos while imagining im reading your mind
Scott Barnes does this. Love it but I'm scared to try it. 😄
Come on....WOW. Well done. Lovely.
Have you tried the P. Louise liquid blushes? They are next level and I really want to see you try a few.
Just recently experimenting with this technique and this video is the best! 😊 Could you list the brushes you used? They all worked out so well!
I just received the Mac Studio radiance primer I’m praying it works for me too!! ❤ RUclips is killing my bank account 😂 I’ve been ordering at least one thing from every video I watch lately 😂😂😂😂
Hi Alexandra, i would love to know the brushes you use, please please do a video about that. ❤️love your video’s.
Beautiful! CT product contain a lot of talc I recentely saw a video on this. I believe in many products it’s their main ingredient…😢
Thank you
when you said bless you to yourself 😇🤣
I find it better to under pin with a cream products concealer normally and use a sponge to apply foundation nina ubi has good videos on her channel doing this method xx
how do you make sure your cream products don't mix in with the foundation though? That's what happened to me when I tried it
"...because I wanna make sure that I'm not getting... cats on the cat scratcher." I was confused for a second thinking that was some kind of modern colloquialism and I couldn't figure out what it meant. Then I realized you were talking about your cat lol.
Hiya Alex. Love you and all your videos. Quick question: have you reviewed or use any of Jones Road (Bobbie Brown's no makeup makeup line) products? Specifically the WTFoundation and Miracle Balm? If not, can you? 😂 LOL
Scott barnes made this famous
