Considering the pinnacle of art that Bo Burnham's "Inside" and the movie "Jaggi" holds in my own experience, and now seeing Dostoevsky's Demons being compared to those, makes me want to read it so much. But my reading self has been comatose for a while. Hopefully, he will come back to life soon. 😔🤞

Roskolnikov is probably one of the best sociopathic character written ever….deotovesky just dives deep in the mind of how people think.its sad he didn’t get recognition when he was alive

Have read it. Such a massive work by Dostoevsky. He completely dives into the human psychology and presents every tiniest thing.
    Also his "Notes from underground".

last year, I picked crime and punishment and I remember how tormented I was while reading about raskolnikov. Could'nt read more than 15 pages a day coz it would all get pretty heavy, needless to say the storyline wouldn't move an inch but that was okay to me. At last I was quite pissed by the character that I made it a point to only read the last few pages in internet summary... kinda to show my anguish to dostoevsky, I was pissed at him and his genius that I couldn't read him anymore. I don't even remember much of the book, I only remember I was pissed and tired and my brains were palpitating.. made a pact after that, only one dostoevsky a year, Or else I'll be the depressed-ass Rodya.

Why are Indians so obsessed with Dostoevsky, Kafka. I've tried reading both(Notes from Underground and metamorphosis) and found they induce claustrophobia (I already have some anxiety issues). Though I read a lot(e.g Moby Dick, Jon Krakauer and much more and is proud member of two book clubs in Jaipur). If one starts suffering from mild Agoraphobia, one should know where to look. The future may be uncertain(Jobs, Marriage, Children, Misogyny and more) and confusing but do Dostoevsky has a cure.

It is the most sarcastic of all Dostoevsky's books 😇Right from the first page, that character Verkhovensky senior, who was once a revolutionary and lives off that fact for the rest of his life - it is just too much. But it is also distinctly anti-Communist, more than 50 years before the Russian revolution, Dostoevsky saw through Communism, knew it would be a disaster....

  • @DipanKumarRout

Got this recommendation from couple of folks and thinking of starting it. One of the reasons why I had been avoiding Russian classics (and for that matter any foreign author) is because of the translation. I find it almost impossible to believe that the works narrated in a language retain their complete essence when translated to English. So comes the second question of, translator, because you have to admit, a book becomes as good as its translator and not the author. So that being said, now that I have decided to give it a try, which of the below translators would you recommend.
    • Demons (Penguin Classics, 2008). Translated by Robert A. Maguire
    • Demons (Vintage, 1995). Translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky.
    • Demons (Penguin Classic, 2001). Translated by Garnett Constance.

I don't why, no one really supported me, no comments no engagment, even the readers were not watching or even sharing me their thoughts about what should I change to improve. Then as I turned 19, I realized, Reading books and changing my own life is a better approach then making it a fashion show on youtube. Thus, I deleted my channel, now I spend hours reading novels and philosophy. But recently, I created a phony YT account, I used Female AI voice and BOOOMMMMM. It has a pretty good reach, and it also got monetized recently. I guess, I now know what is selling and what not.

Hey ! I read Crime and Punishment and The Idiot last year and I loved it. I kinda fell into a reading slump for almost 1.5 month but I later recovered. Also I am currently 50 pages away from completing The Brothers Karamazov which is another thick brick by Dostoevsky. Loving it so much. I also saw White Nights trending on bookstagram and I read it but what I felt reading his other (thicker) books was somewhat missing in it. I read Notes from Underground and The Meek One by him in 2022 and those were also nice and beginner friendly. You may also pick up books by Leo Tolstoy if you're loving reading Dostoevsky. 😊
