As someone who struggles to go out because of social anxiety this is actually a good method. I don't mind going for walks but I prefer it when I'm with someone. Otherwise I don't really go out.

The way I fix it is by redownloading Pokémon go then adventure sync works just fine.

When I ride in a car and the app is sitting on my lap, the app does NOT track my steps but it does when I actually walk. So moving/swinging the arm is definitely the Key, at least with my phone 😂

It’s because whenever the phone goes too fast it doesn’t track the movement because Pokémon go wants people to walk, not drive.

Because you can be in a moving vehicle and as long as the phone is "swinging" back and forth or left to right to emulate a walking motion, it tracks steps. Several of us have experimented as passengers in a car…the health app tracked in different ways on each phone

Pokemon go doesn't track your movements when the game is off. Adventure Sync allows it to access Google fit which tracks steps by phone vibrations. When you log back in t Pokemon Go, it uploads the data from Google Fit from the time Pokemon Go app was closed to the time it logs in. Google Fit tells it how many steps and approximate distance you potentially moved.
