I'm sure a lot of you already know, but on May 23rd 2024 the remake for the GameCube CLASSIC Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door released for Nintendo Switch!
If you're looking this far down, I can tell you that this Whacka boss battle is dumb fun and hilarious. At this point I feel like the developers must be aware of the modding community lol
Sure they put him at the bottom of the Pit of 100 Trials, but it's an interesting way to make Whacka Bumps renewable I guess.
RUclips does have a 12 hour stream limit, so I probably won't finish the game in one single stream. I'll be back with more once I've gotten some sleep.
Also keep in mind I won't be reading that much text or talk to NPC's. This first playthrough will be a first look at mechanics, oddities, classic exploits and general game-feel/improvements. A more slow and casual look is sure to come later.
CHECK OUR CASUAL TTYD PLAYTHROUGH ► • Paper Mario: The Thous...
I will of course try to pay attention to what's new. The Shadow Sirens and Vivian changes come to mind. Though I am also very excited for all the changed and BRAND NEW music.
Let's hope Intelligent Systems and Nintendo did our treasured classic justice!

i love that whacka doesnt change into anything horrific or final boss-y
he's just a whacka and he's gonna whack you HARD
234 likes and 0 comments? Lemmie fix that
I was partially expecting him to either A. be like the buff diglett meme or B. lock in really fucking hard and get a really serious expression
Same with Mush. Dude's just a Toad that's super great at fighting.
He heals 75 HP off that red one, which he did to me during the fight. His music is also hilarious and very fitting.
why doesn't he just keep eating his bumps every like 3 turns is he stupid /j
Is he even able to be killed?
@@RepugnantWormyou can kill him in 1 turn with danger Mario. But its possible without. You just gotta pray that he doesnt eat a red bump.
@@alfasilverblade ah yes of course the easy way to decimate literally everything
@@thembigstonks7016 well its not that easy, you need to spend a looooooong time in the casino.
This just shows that the developers were influenced by the modding community along with the other new super boss. Glad to see that they added new stuff like this.
Yeahhhh… 🤫🧏🏾
Nintendo FTW
AGAIN
To be fair, said mod was based off unfinished code from the original N64 game
@@SparkleWolf404 to be fair, they took clear inspiration in multiple chapters from multiple modding authors.
It’s the other way around. Paper Mario 64 had an unused whacka fight in its code, which modders worked off of.
I kind of wish they made Jr. Troopa a superboss too, playing off that little cameo in Zip Toad's email. It'd be amazing to just go back to Riverside Station or something and just, out of nowhere, hear "MARIOOOOOOO!" and then the music starts playing.
I’m surprised that with all the mods that added a Whacka fight, not a single one of them had Whacka use the bumps as projectiles or heals to Whacka.
To be fair, no one would expect Wacka basically unlocking a cheat code and healing himself more than the damage it takes to get the bump.
Honestly I keep getting surprised with official developers always getting ideas that modders never had even if its a popular game
@@charismaentertainer1657
Conservation of mass my ass
I love how one of his “attacks” is shaking the stage to make a bunch of stuff fall on himself to make bumps for ammo. Creative and funny.
In PM64, one of his attacks was throwing his bump, but whenever he did, it would crash the game ‘cause Whacka is an unused and unfinished enemy, so the game can’t process Whacka throwing his bump, lol.
We live in a world now where Whacka Boss is Nintendo Seal of Approval real, now, and we just have to deal with that.
And The Master too.
I love how the battle's designed to dissuade Power Bounce. The more you hit him the more times he gets to hit you.
The Remake in general really feels like it’s encouraging players to use builds that don’t include Power Bounce or to get good at getting frame perfect jumps since they made the timing more difficult (instead of 7-7-6-6-5-4-3-2-1-1… it’s 7-7-6-1-4-3-2-1-1… so they expect most players to only get three bounces in per use).
unless you're cracked at superguarding
I mean... you should still Power Bounce (or use Mega Rush P strats), just with a focus on getting more damage per hit. You will always need about the same number of hits to kill him, and slowing the fight down just means that he will get more bumps that are only worth 1 of his HP. Just also use Boo's Sheets or Life Shrooms. Or Rally Wink to kill him in one turn.
I mean... I still used Power Bounce as a prime source of damage lol.
@@RandomHans me who power bounced and then veiled with vivian to avoid the bumps
Goombella: whatever you do DON’T whack it mario
Mario: 🔨
*dark souls boss music starts*
“it was at this moment he knew, he fvcked up”
the fact they added this AND mush just shows how much love was poured into this,
i just remember the community talking about how the whaka you hit shouldve attacked you as a secret boss, or that mush shouldve been a secret boss fight. to see both become true is just awesome.
also to further add to this, kinda funny that unlike mush, wacka HAS one status condition he's actually weak to...and its the one that damages him, aka, strengthening him. the dev's knew what they were doing.
uh, no. A couple extra bosses is not "much love"
@@yomama9390 shush
@@Lonkshi21no
@yomama9390 I know it’s not much, but not only is it a remake that fans have been asking for for about 20 years or so at this point, but it’s also a complete asset remake of the game and it adds little extra details into the game! Am I saying that you’re wrong? No, because tbf the only new thing content wise that was added was the two bosses, but they did a lot outside of the content additions so it does sorta make sence as to why Prince Mush and Wacka are the only two new bosses
@thepainpanda7681 Yeah, there’s little to improve when it comes to the challenge of TTYD, unlike when they remade Mario RPG last year. That’s why they added a lot more postgame to that one
Such a creatively thought out boss. Basically most OP strats that involve chain attacks (power bounce, yoshi's group pound or whatever it's called) now get used against you. Actually pretty cool tbh.
Just stack power rush and you'll be able to one shot him
@@frankmaae8216power rush folks PLEASE shut up for once, your strats are cheap and you know they don't count
@@frankmaae8216 Ah yes
The crutch strat that literally exploits the ENTIRE game
Definitely worth talking about and praising /s
@@BlackBeartic229 having 5 health is challenging enough. You either get good at super guards or you die
@@frankmaae8216 This would be true if Life Shroom wasn't the best healing item in the game by miles, guarding infinite damage at the cost of 0 turns. You can also just use Quick Change + Mega Rush P strats.
I lost it when the fight opened with dark souls like boss music
Honestly it's a pretty cool boss fight, though it's kind of a missed opportunity that superguarding the bumps doesn't work like superguarding pokey segments. Like imagine if whacka used superguards too and you had to volley the bumps back at him a few times
Do not give modders more ideas
@@goombaluigi8681no no, give them as many ideas as possible
That would be funny as hell.
Parry then back, and each one that hits Whacka produces a red Bump, so it's a risky move either way 😂
He'd be a menace if he ate superguarded bumps
The fact that it has an attack to hit ITSELF to have more bumps is amazing 😂
I just love how the music starts all Dark Souls-like and then it's just goofiness, it's perfect!
This is a fucking mod levels of what fuck like, what
I can't believe this is a real thing in a official Nintendo remake. The devs MUST love the modding community.
I don't see any ways that they'd come up with a whacka superboss that DOESN'T require them knowing about his presence in modding
Whacka was supposed to be a boss or at least encounterable in battle so its not too far off. RPGs also generally like to have one silly super boss so its plausible that they came up with this idea
@@Cobalt957 I think both reasoning can be true at the same time. They probably got the idea from the fact that it was originally scrapped, but were motivated in implementing it in for the remake by how enthusiastic the modding community has been in the last decade or so.
27 damage on a red whacka bumb is hilarious I wonder if he can heal off those too
I’ve seen it happen exactly once. IIRC, it heals him a whopping 75 HP!
Wtf @@spugnoxngubcux9801
Apparently he can and it gives him 75 HP.
It's a shame he only heals that one time instead of periodically.
He DOES do it other times, just very rarely.
Seriously? Wow
Made me believe he only uses one bump per turn. Then he proceeded to throw like 10 bumps at my Yoshi and ended him lol
And Whacka and Prince Mush can both be fought as many times as you want.
BUT, for this rematch, you have to fight your way down through the 100th floor every time (even after paying 300 coins to start at Floor 50).
Its very very nice there's something at the end of the pit after u beat Bonetail
Vivian would Probably be a god-send in this fight. Have her drag mario into the shadow realm to dodge wacka's attacks.
Koops's shell shield is a better option cause it doesn't use up an entire turn afterwards
Yeah that’s how I did this fight, I had Mario attack (Spring Jump) than had Vivian use vail to avoid all of Wakka’s bumps. Then Wakka goes again but just did further damage to himself which is also dodge by the next vail. 😂🧀
I feel like for the stage hazard move, that’s a turn where it makes sense to skip the turn with Veil. It’s like a boss spending a turn charging.
That would only work if they didn't use the charge move again right after, which Wacka does.
This is the strat I used. He always spends the turn when you're vulnerable to create bumps, with the following turn while you're veiled to throw them. Made the fight actually free, even if kinda slow and tedious.
Only Nintendo can make a Godly Theme for a fucking Troll Character😂
This boss looks like it has an incredible understanding of ttyds mechanics, this is the most surreal game ive played in forever
You know what would’ve been so evil? If Whacka ate a golden Whacka Bump at the second to last turn and healed to full health.
I'm pretty sure that I'm not the first person to realize this. but given the gimmick of the fight that Whacka self damage itself with hazards to gain it's attack. you can do a "pacifist" challenge in which you just superguard all of Whacka's moves until it's health reaches 0.
He heals 25HP off normal Whacka Bumps and 75HP off Red Whacka Bumps so that would take a while though...
With the right badge set up I’ve seen someone one turn kill whacka
Pretty easy. Equip a few power rush badges with a 5hp mario and you can one shot him with a power bounce
@@Canttouchthis04 there is little reason for a majority of people to do that. not everyone is doing pre-hooktail pit, okay?
@@LukaLemonsThere are not many enemies in this game that can't be one-turned with badges
For a sec i thought we were gonna get a remix of the battle theme from paper mario 64 for this fight, but i like this a lot better
Oh you do hear the main theme of pm64 by talking to a certain character in the post game I won't spoil though.
1:12 Dang! So, he punishes Multi-Hit attacks like Power Bounce HARD!
I just killed him first try because for some reason i found it really easy to superguard those bumps.
Definitely feel like Mush is a much more difficult fight since you can't mow him down just as easily as whacka. Honestly think Whacka just needs to be able to heal with his bumps more often instead of basically only once, that'd be what really helps push him toward being on par with Mush.
This is still an amazing fight, and both bosses are amazing in their own ridiculous ways
Atleast there should be a scripted heal when he reaches 1HP which fills his whole HP again. Would fit to a troll boss
@@miepsi4299 Well we know the red whacka bumps heal 75 hp, could be fitting for him to eat one of those. Not a full heal but at least would fit with what they have already there.
But I do dig the idea for sure
Maybe its too much to ask, but I REALLY hope both of them get changes in any potential patches. Have a damage cap on the first phase of Mush to combat OHKOs, and make Whacka heal more often. They're minor enough changes that I feel they're possible, but I dunno
@@miepsi4299 I think a flower tried that once in another game....
didn't end so well for him.
@@squiddu Don't remove OHKO strats, if people want to cheat themselves out of the fight let them. This game isn't meant to be hard but rather allow options and creativity to avoid mechanics should be rewarded.
Whacka healing more often just pushes 25+ damage strats to make the fight a joke while making those under likely to become impossible potentially even soft locking you. You just fought through at least 50 floors to get here, the fight can't be too extreme and has to be built with that in mind.
It’s actually insane how much love and care they put into this remake after spending 20 years denying the existence of classic paper mario.
They didn't really denied to be fair they just wanted to focus on other way to make a paper mario game which is completely valid (also I don't think they took less than 5 years to make it)
For real! It gives me hope that they do the same with Super Paper Mario bc the original is already a love letter to its fans
It’s a shame they didn’t bring back the rest of the og partners along with lady bow and bootler tho
It's funny because the og paper director came back because he finished working on the fire emblem card game and he felt the need to do a remake right away lol.
I love how you hear such an intense music for just fighting a whacka.
This is twice now that Nintendo has made a silly one-off enemy into a Superboss. One more and it's a hat trick.
What's the first? Anti-Guy?
What was the other one
I'm growing insane, can you tell me the franchise?
@@Dexuz The other enemy-turned-Superboss was the Boss Snurp from the Switch Port of Miitopia.
@@blockeontheleafeon Oh
when I heard that theme I was like What the FUCK
actually zack113??! (no way)
Whacka’s revenge
first Prince Mush who basically a modded Master Battle, now Wacka who felt like a Master Quest battle.
This just tells me that Intelligent System actually watched or played those hardcore modded PM64 game, impressed by it, and decided to make their own spin into their own game.
And the fact that they *get it* just amazed me, and gave me soo much hope into the future of PM, like they knew this is something we liked and they put soo much love in it.
They also did something similar in smrpg remake with the superbosses. Some of them felt like they were out of smrpg armageddon's playbook.
More like these 2 were always supposed to be bosses in the original but had to be scrapped. Whacka even had a tattle log in the files. Nevertheless, it’s nice to see scrapped content come to life in remakes.
@@Mojo1356i feel like people are really underestimating the guys who made the game in the first place
I saw in another video that if he eats a red bump it restores 75 HP
I guess like with the TTYD64 mod Nintendo looked at the Master Quest mod as well and said hold my beer, I'm gonna outdo you.
I can't get over how this music starts like it's dark souls
my guess is he didn't heal because by the end you were at low hp yourself during the fight, so he might follow 64 bowser healing rules maybe
Nintendo's best timeline?
You probably already know this, but you can almost always get +4 +4 on Power Lift if you don't fill up the gauge any more after you get to 4. It stops letting you power up after the timer runs out or after you hit enough power up arrows. If you put any after +4 you have that many less arrows you can hit for the other stat
Usually comedic character who fights you if you’ve made bad choices? With a sick theme and a unique mechanic in the fight? Whacka is Sans Undertale.
Vivian taking you underground on his attack turns trivializes this fight
thanks for not spoiling it in the thumbnail or title
I still think Bonetail is the hardest because she can stun lock you
Whacka took notes from Tuff Puff
This is hilariously awesome. Having Whacka of all things be insanely OP is so funny.
whacka would be unkillable if it healed at low-mid hp
omg this is SUCH a funny boss, loved that they did this!!! great level of challenge
Good to know that she’ll shield works good for this fight as well much like with the shadow queen’s attacks, but yeah I never would have thought they’d make a fight against Wacka official (mods aside)
I’m sure this boss was really difficult until people realize that they can use Vivian and this becomes a breeze
As if Mowz wasn't bad enough 😂
I love how they made prince mush, he does crazy damage and if you don’t super gaurd him he’ll be unhittable for the next turn
Vivian’s super guard animation is so silly lol.
I was expecting a fight with Vivian upon seeing the thumbnail
Just a reminder that this was it PLAYING with you
Should've added a turn 1 undodgeable unguardable attack that does 5 damage to troll Danger Mario players, make them do the entire pit again lol
It would need to do more because of last stands
Whacka finally gets revenge for all those bumps you knocked off...
I love the fact that whacka's just a better version of anti guy
Whaka ho, Whaka lei. Whaka says you gonna die.
ok but have you discovered yet the mew fight under the truck? he has 666 hp, 66 att and 66 def
Not bad for being able to bring back an unused feature. Also, what is your opinion on the song?
4:55 I MADE THIS EXACT MISTAKE MY FIRST TIME FIGHTING HIM: got two red bumps, too. Had to restart the battle :(
My boy finally got revenge
Dark Star Edition moment.
For this fight I recommend using piercing blow and power stomp along with power lift. (It also helps I have 100hp)
Honestly, by seeing how amazing the rework for music, areas and backtracking... I do hope a randomizer mod will happen 'cause DAMN i'll be on it for days xD
I stacked about 45 power rush badges in conjunction with mega rush, and charging like I did on the GameCube. I managed to one shot him
0:16 internally mario is already prepping to BONK
Hey I'm trying to join the discord server. I can see all the channels but I can't message. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any advice?
Can’t believe this bloody whacka could deal 27 damage in one attack.
The addition of Whacka is fantastic, it's literally something fans asked for!
But HOW they added him was nothing we expected. This guy is just chilling at the bottom of the Pit of 100 trails just to chill. Throws his own bumps at you.
We never called that
you can actually beat that guy in one turn if you equip a ton of dmg ups
Very cool boss
I just wish charge didn’t completely break the fight
Doing this fight without a life shroom and so many pretty luckys with lucky day was a thing.
i managed to get it done with pure offensive hammers and bobbery/flurrie and a clutch boo sheet i got from the audience a dozen or so fights earlier in the pit after entering with no life shrooms or item planning
Surprisingly I did it no items which was strange I went in with 8 life mushrooms and other healing items expecting him to destroy me but turns out if you superguard he isn't really a threat
How did you finish the 100 pits
I completed the game already but it have some star splits missing on the moon how can it get them??
The Thousand Year Door: Whacka Whacks Back!
Would the fight be possible if Whacka healed optimally?
Thanks for the vids btw, you put on a great show in these battles :D
So how do you fight this guy? Is it like the shadow fight in Super Paper Mario after doing the 100 trials twice?
Damn this is crazy
Fun fact: Whacka was originally intended to be fightable in the original Paper Mario 64.
I love how everyone is losing it over the Whacka fight and not even mentioning the CRAZY Prince Mush Fight you can do.
Clearly, some of the devs have played the Paper Mario hacks and they took inspiration for the super bosses of this game.
More like Whacka was supposed to be an optional boss to begin with.
@@Mojo1356More like the attack patterns of these superbosses regardless feel similar to mods so that doesn't count as much as you think it does.
I still need to do Whacka but Mush was fun, although kinda easy if you can superguard.
now we need a remake of the original game too
I’m pretty sure the meteor and statue are scripted because I got 2 of each when I fought him
They are not, I never saw them
You need to put him to sleep and hit him with powerful attacks to end the fight fast because the boss will do super damage
I had way more trouble with the other new boss than with this guy
I’m just a bit happy about this, when I beat Whacka, I got double Star Points.
And on floor 98, I got 2 Amayzee Daisy’s in one battle for 97 SP, leveling up, then got enough on floor 99 to level up again.
I brought him all the way down to 1 HP, and for some reason he decided to do the earthquake attack and a bucket fell down and finished him off lol
I beat it quite easily by just stacking charges, makes for a great way to minimize your hits on him and do it all at once, or at least as much as possible.
This is why you don't whack Whacka.
I wanna see someone troll and just power bounce and use yoshi to attack him lol.
Yellow Whacka Bumps = 10 Damage
Red Whacka Bumps = 25 Damage
Did Wacka eats his own bump?
Why would they say mod inspired them to create this super boss? It's the same company that down fan-games and rom hacking!
3:12 Sado-macho 3:58 Oh shit! 4:54 Dang it! 8:23 WHAT?! 9:5027 Damages?! 11:06 Hello meteor 11:16 Plus the statue!
12:27 Good Shell Shield! 13:26 Golden Bump FTW!
Start: do heavy damages and super guard well
honestly when i first saw this in a video i thought it was fake
I had a feeling a new enemy appeared in the Pit of 100 Trials because of the Tattle Log (133 was the one I was missing, it's after the Shadow Queen and it's after Bonetail if sorted by place) so I did the pit again right after beating it and didn't find anything at the bottom so I had to look up how to unlock it and got spoiled 😢 that's what I get for sparring Wacka on the island LOL (thank you devs for the option to skip to Floor 50...)
Now I'm itching to fight...I have been waiting for a good fight in the series for a good while now. Bummed that Master T didn't come back though.
Curious if Art Attack would've caused a bump with each hit; I'm gonna guess yes. Maybe he also only heals if there's only one bump on the stage, or perhaps his RNG for picking "heal" goes down with each bump on the stage? I also wonder if it ate the red bump if it would have healed an enormous amount, lol
