  • Hi everyone, its been while since I last uploaded a video. I have been re thinking the method of raising the barn in a way that I find less stressful. I have set a plan in place and we will start putting it up soon.
We have also had some issues with the lambs. they got some foot issues so we had to sort them out. We also hatched 9 goslings recently and they need a new home so I made a timber and mesh house for them to keep the fox out at night.

Speaking from experience of building quite a few barns sometimes it’s easier to stop, take a break, go a bit slower and not get stressed.
We built a 60’ by 50’ barn lifting big Timbers by hand, ropes, a cheap tower scaffolding etc
It took us 2 years but we kept costs to a minimum…

[edit] To tell the truth I prefer seeing you doing all the work and improvising. I didn't really enjoy the segments where the jointers were working, they did amazing and beautiful work but that's what they are paid to do. I would have enjoyed it more seeing you figure it out yourself but I do appreciate you need to pick your fights otherwise things take far too long. Agree 100% and look forward to the new phase.

To make things yourself and being a Jack of all trades are the things that make life more rewarding and satisfying. Anyone can say I paid to get that done. To do things yourself and learn by your mistakes is far more satisfying than paying some so called expert. My father was the one who showed me Enginuity. You are a lucky man and a great inspiration to me. Thanks Kris.

I watch your channel expressly because you love doing things that challenge you, not because you love things done. I feel a kinship with you in that regard.
My feeling about your channel changed as you geared up for a large team cutting the joinery and putting up your barn. I was excited to see the barn go up but couldn't describe why I wasn't as excited as I'd been in the past for your projects. You described it exactly - it stopped being about learning and challenging your self while building and became about getting something built.
I'm so grateful and pleased that your channel will return to what's always drawn me to your work; you sharing _your_ experiences about learning and making things. Thank you!!

Good on ya for the change of tack and choosing to erect the barn on your own, just be careful with the working at height etc! For me, you are the best content on You Tube, for all the reasons above but also, we viewers, never get called ‘guys’ at the beginning of each video, this is such a refreshing change from all the other creators out there. Also, we never have to put up with video sponsors such as Surfshark or such like half way through your video. Lastly, there’s no pushing of merch to suffer either, please don’t be tempted to go down this avenue in the future, your channel is already a beautiful oasis in the sand dunes of You Tube. This episode I think highlights a really fundamental point for this account that is relevant to us all. In engaging external help for the barn build it was evident to see how Kris' ownership of the project slowly shifted. There was a subtle but clear loss of control and a shift from the joy and satisfaction of doing a job yourself to managing others doing a job for you. This is exactly the opposite of what Kris and Dot represent to me and it doesn't surprise me that the internal conflict for Kris led to a loss of interest in the whole project.
Kris your ability to recognise this and halt immediately (despite the great risks and pressure your outlined) is hugely courageous and as you've shown in this episode once again, by grounding yourself in owning your own life and the many tasks (which we might prefer to off-load to others) we actually gain much much more.

Chris, it’s so nice to hear you refer to your new family members as “him” or “her” and not “it.” To many people that seems like a small or silly distinction, but it’s a HUGE leap in how one looks at other living being. When one calls a goose or a cat or whomever an “it” you make it into a thing, like a hammer or a shoe. But when a goose has gender, they become someone special. You are recognizing that they are a living, breathing, feeling creature. Keep it up.

Hi Kris, Love your reasoning for changing the barn raising plan:
    1. Putting mental health first.
    2. Keeping in perspective that the barn need not go up in an instant.
    3. Cost containment
    4. Will require creative thinking for lifting all the parts [good for #1]
    5. Seriously better sense of satisfaction when it's up [good for #1]

Imagine the pins and needles after being scrunched up in that egg for weeks. I left employment and worked for myself for fifty years .Nothing like choosing when and how you work looking forward to the hydro job!👍🤓🇬🇧

  • @darrenjulietslandincarmart9839

I'm sure you will make the most of it, doing it yourself with a small team.
We all look forward to seeing you do it the old-fashioned way, with blocks and tackle 👍
It will be more rewarding too

Absolutely get everything you described - I got myself in a pickle, with a team of lovely builder friends, doing a complete rebuild with natural materials of my terraced house in Bristol a few years back. Had I known the stress of having 6 people on site - the pace at which things would move, the pressure on me to be constantly getting more materials on site, and the rate at which money would be leaving the budget ... I'd have said "thanks, but no thanks". I stopped the madness after two weeks, and despite it taking me 6 years to finish it myself, it was absolutely joyous in comparison. Conventional building is all about time, rushing to the finish line, and nothing about taking the time needed to fully express your creativity, and to feel your way to solutions. Really glad you're back in your groove, and look forward to watching for the next umpteen years as you continue to unfold plans on your land. Enjoy it :)

Brilliant Kris, you are clever to just stop and re think the plans for your barn, you are so sensible. If you don't put out a video for a while that is your choice, we all know it takes time to produce, we just feel so privileged to be able to see a little bit into yours and Dots life, thank you. Your guys seemed to have done a good job and brought you nearer to the "barn raising". We completely understand how you feel when you want to do the rest your way and in your time with less pressure of time schedules . We are very much looking forward to seeing your "problem solving " brain in action to get over the hurdles you obviously will encounter( as you haven't done this before, I presume!) But as you say, slow, steady and safely, you will both get there. This kind of life style is self reliant to the upmost but that's the whole point, its the achievement of not just what one produces but also the process and the journey to the outcome, whatever that might be, it make us more knowledgeable and skilled on route for the next project and also less out goings. Not having so much "hands on" too busy organising stuff seems to steal something from the process, very frustrating. It makes me laugh watching you, your thought patterns and skilful thinking is what is your biggest and greatest tool and asset (apart from Dot of course),love seeing the animals, blessings to you both x

I came across your channel many years ago.. and I fell in love with three things..
    1. You as a person..
    2. Your somewhat engineering and knowledge of electronics and how things work..
    3. Most important.. your Jerry rigging/ maguivering skills, make useful stuff from everyday items..
I know there were some things you need to get outside help with.. but I am happy you took a time and reflect on what works with for you..
Looking forward to the barn progress.. If it takes a year, 2 years you will have me watching.. #slow and steady

Good for you! You obviously weren't building a barn because you needed it NOW, you wanted to build a barn that would be fun and be useful for you when done.Good going discovering why you weren't having the fun you wanted and fixing the problem. Most of us want to see you doing cool stuff, and if you're not having fun, then neither are we! Do it your way!

I DO NOT blame you one bit matey. I'm exactly the same. As soon as other people are involved it gets complicated. Their problems become your problems, you get let down, stressed etc etc. Life is tremendous when you just depend on what you've got already and - in your case clearly - tremendous ingenuity.

brilliant, sometimes we get swept along with technology and machines because it’s quick n easy , but to step back to basics also brings the pleasure & enjoyment with a bigger sense of achievement. nothing like your scale but moved my 4 mtr log cabin with two scissor jacks and a few broom handles solo,, sat there afterwards with a bottle of cider & a smile !! thanks for sharing your journey 👍

Don't apologize for your content. I can't recall not watching 100% of the videos. You farting around with a sheep with sore feet is still more entertaining than 98% of the drivel on TV. Hello again from the southern US.

We love your creativity Kris. You are an artist! We also watch Lumnah Acres. He has a farm in Northern USA but he’s very clever too. He built his chicken house on skids, so it can easily be dragged. Also, he built his house too. Good channel to watch.

I'm glad you've gotten your enjoyment back for the barn. I thought it looked like the guys who were "helping" you kind of highjacked your project and reduced you to their worker who was supposed to do all the tasks they didn't want to do. I'm glad that you will be doing it in your own way. You never need to apologize for taking time off from videos. You deserve it. Nice to see Dot again. Take care and we'll see you whenever you are ready to put the building up.

I just found your channel today as I was searching for timber built post and beam barn videos. I am planning to mill lumber from trees off of my property to build a horse barn, and your attitude and ways of working greatly appeal to me. I am really happy to hear your decision to raise your barn on your own and in your own time. Very much looking forward to those videos! Thank you for taking the time to share your lifestyle with us.
