This guy is awesome. He makes it fun to listen to, and he's having fun with it instead of just beating it up the kit to show off. There needs to be more people like this! Love it!
His playing and snare drum sound on Michael's "This is It" documentary are so insprirational despite my misgivings about MJ's health and the decision to tour. Nobody has the pocket like Moffett!
Kick Drum & Cymbal Ninja! Mr. Moffett is the TRUTH! Very impressive that he also clearly has a great grasp on audio engineering & placement of his drums WITHIN the mix such that the kit has the proper "presence" in the mix.
Wow when the cammera goes to the mixer and you can see the lights dance with such precision like a computer almost. Amazing. Thanks so much for taking time out of your days to demonstrate this valuable information and entertainment. INCREDIBLE
Thanks allot Sugar foot awesome n very inspirational video. You've gotten me excited to play again. I had quit playing in bands for almost 9 years do to some personal reasons wich I regret doing very much. It was like a piece of me was missing all those years n I was not happy go lucky the way I was before that but now I'm playing again n I love it and I'm playing better than I ever have because I'm relaxed and actually appreciating n enjoy my gift from God. Hope I get to see you live some day sir. Thank you very much n God bless.
Great video and very interesting, but the most useful part for me is when he stops playing and starts talking, and just as they switch the mic over you can hear the overtones ringing. THAT's what the kit sounds like when you're in the room and no amount of tuning your drums will make them sound like the mic'd and processed version that we hear when he's demoing.
Awesome stuff Love johnathon thrilled to see i'm playing the exact same drums, Dw collector series, broken Glass finish. These drums sound great and I really enjoy playing them!
"And why 3 1/2 turns?...who knows!" hahaha awesome! He'd make a great clinician! I could listen to him for hours! The right balance between science and art.
The sound on this video was not very well done. I wish it were better and I feel like the level of his voice was louder when he spoke verse the level of his drums when he played them. I swear there is so much EQ and compression on in this video. On the up side this Jonathan Moffett aka Sugar Foot kills it. I've been watching and studying his style of playing music for years. I'm a huge Michael Jackson fan and a musician so when I first saw Michaels live show on tv years back he blew me and I'm sure everyone away but his band Ooooish they they were AMAZING!!! Being a percussionist and mostly a Drum kit player I looked this guy up right away and knew I had to lean his stuff. His playing is so freakin' tight and he grooves with all the hits and licks he does!
Follow-up: Moffett is so right-on with the importance of developing personal sound and tuning-I am most enthusiastic about playing when my drums sound great and are tuned to where I want them. Music is a soulful experience between the artist and the audience; it starts with the artist first and his/her instrument. So inspired!
Amazing video. By the way, he is using 2 snares, but even when he use just one you can make so many sounds with it. I mean, he needs 3 or more Bass drums to do different sounds, cause is impossible to do different sounds in just one, but you can make that the snare sound in so many different ways just hiting in the ring, in the center, crosstick, rimshot, closer to the ring, without the snare strainer or different sticks.
Dude CHILL and show some respect. 1. Pridgen was not born when Jonathan was hired 2. It's not always about skill, personality and professionalism has a HUGE factor on who gets gigs or not (not saying Pridgen doesn't have a personality, professionalism) 3. Jonathan has influenced million of drummers around the world.....he might not have the technical skill like Pridgen or others but if he helped enhance what the artist is feeling he's doing his job of playing music.
Hey,..yep one of the groove masters,..it don't matter what the critics say,..but just look at his resume'.>That dude has been there done that all over the world in huge stadiums. I love and respect this guy's work and also Ricky Lawson.
This video should be re-titled: "Jonathan Moffat Discussing Drumming Philosophy & Mentioning Drum Tuning a Couple of Times" How can you post a 23 minute video, supposedly about drum tuning, in which the "demonstrator" doesn't once pick up a lug wrench?
Continued: Thats like saying "Ricky Lawson is overrated,Chris Dave should've been the Yellowjacket's drummer" when clearly Ricky Lawson Co-Founded the Yellowjackets (One of Thomas Pridgen's favorite Jazz/Fusion groups and Ricky toured for Michael Jackson too)
I bet Jonahan has been using the same size toms for a long time, and probably the same shell configuration to know that 3 1/2 turns on the lugs get fairly close to the tunings he likes. It's all about evenly tuning your drums. If the lugs are at different tensions, you can get some pretty nasty "thwamp" like overtones!
He's definitely one amazing drummer and has a very soulful groove, but it's easier for him to make a kit for doing all that he wants to do because he's got a shitload of money and endorsements so he can make any kit he wants. Most of us have to rely on a standard size kit to do what we can do. Never have I seen a typical day job/weekend club drummer own a 12pc DW Collector's kit w/ 15 cymbals lol.
+Randy Woolum It's possible to get one together if you REALLY want; it doesn't have to be a DW set. I saw Jonathan Moffett with Elton John; his drums did sound like ARMAGEDDON :-))
4:10 To all you Smurfs out there who say dumb shit like "But Buddy Rich played only a 4 piece kit." Or "that kit is too big." You simply don't have enough musical vision.
You Sir! are a freak of nature. :) I'll have to settle for practicing my heel toe with just one pedal. Playing the pipe organ with your feet is something else.
totally dug the tunings of the drums but thought just about everything sound crappy not the actual drums themses. johnathan moffet is one of the greats! but the recording of the drums i thought was not very good especially on the kicks. :( but totally digging the cymbalsss
Awesome!! & the best explanation on RUclips!!! very awesome drummer..think I've found my idol drummer!! lol check out the cymbal grove @ 9:02 !!!!! he's legit!
It's hard not to love this guy!
This guy is awesome. He makes it fun to listen to, and he's having fun with it instead of just beating it up the kit to show off. There needs to be more people like this! Love it!
i know thats right!
I see why Michael picked him as his main drummer
If I start wearing vests with no shirt, will my pocket be as tight as his?
I gonna try it...
What an absolute legend! So underrated it hurts!
His playing and snare drum sound on Michael's "This is It" documentary are so insprirational despite my misgivings about MJ's health and the decision to tour. Nobody has the pocket like Moffett!
8:26 - triplets in the bass while keeping 8ths with the hi-hat. I was not ready for this.
Those cymbal grabs excite my soul..
Wow - Jonathan is really a fountain of knowledge when it comes to drumming techniques and tuning.. Thanks!
Kick Drum & Cymbal Ninja! Mr. Moffett is the TRUTH! Very impressive that he also clearly has a great grasp on audio engineering & placement of his drums WITHIN the mix such that the kit has the proper "presence" in the mix.
A fabulous and underrated player. I remember seeing him with Elton John great pocket.
This man knows his stuff👍👍👍💯% he does!!! Thanks for sharing
He has the GIFT. One of the best.
Wow when the cammera goes to the mixer and you can see the lights dance with such precision like a computer almost. Amazing. Thanks so much for taking time out of your days to demonstrate this valuable information and entertainment. INCREDIBLE
Jonathan's amazing.
With a name like Sugarfoot, multiple bass drums was preordained.
Not sure how comfortable I am letting another man have a conversation with my soul...
No he's talking about the drums
William Jamison Lol, I'm aware. It was a joke. A 2 year old joke...
If MJ chose him, there's a reason.
FIVE BASS DRUMS!?! FIVE BASE DRUMS!?! That's all I wanted to say...well done, sir.
@charliesepi We agree, and we're lucky to have him!
A great drummer and a real artist. Great video.
Simple lovaebly guy who turns into a precision machine when he plays. He's made the drum machine obsolete
Thanks allot Sugar foot awesome n very inspirational video. You've gotten me excited to play again. I love the way he plays when he's playing for the funk band Cameo.
He was a pleasure to listen to..seems like a really decent bloke.
Awesome stuff Love johnathon thrilled to see i'm playing the exact same drums, Dw collector series, broken Glass finish. These drums sound great and I really enjoy playing them!
Thanks Jonathan and PreSonus, I enjoyed listng to your insights and sounds!
Cool Jonathan loved this video, you don't know how many times I played to your music. Nice video, keep rockin!
thats Sugar.....respect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! imma add that approach to snare to ma groove......thank you Mr Moffet :)
Jonathan is turning your drums. Everyone has their own 'tone" and once you find which one is yours,, GO for it!
"And why 3 1/2 turns?...who knows!" hahaha awesome! He'd make a great clinician! I could listen to him for hours! The right balance between science and art.
love your playing and videos Johnathon!
Yeeeah.Well said (and played )Sir.We love Sugarfoot. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
The sound on this video was not very well done. I wish it were better and I feel like the level of his voice was louder when he spoke verse the level of his drums when he played them. this is one of the best drummers!
Simply incredible
He's like the Terry Bozzio of groove.
Great Musicianship thank you for sharing your gift of music
"why three and a half turns? who knows." lol
Yes, Drums are Melodic Instruments and a DrumTone System perfectly tunes your drum pitch instantly and always... Even while Playing!
Okay. I officially love this guy.
that cymbal work is insane
Sugarfoot is THE SHIT.
+Bobby Lovejam Jr Shitfoot Moffett!
AMAZING video-what an inspiration!
My new favourite drummer😊
Holy crap that was fantastic!!! True magic! Thanks!
Him and Quest Love should drum together!
@RageicaNiels Looks like two snares... one piccalo to the left.
Amazing video.

@7:08
That chemical release face when you start feeling it.

This man is a fucking master guru. and his groove... that groove!
i know. you can hear the history of songs we all love by hearing him play just a beat.
Remember people, not all music requires the kind of set up Jonathan has!
Hey,..yep one of the groove masters,..it don't matter what the critics say,..but just look at his resume'.>That dude has been there done that all over the world in huge stadiums. I love and respect this guy's work and also Ricky Lawson.
@ 9:10 - SIIIIIIIIIIIICK!!!!!
This video should be re-titled: "Jonathan Moffat Discussing Drumming Philosophy & Mentioning Drum Tuning a Couple of Times"

awesome drummer ever
John Good was his drum tech?!

Blessings!!!
Just minute 9 is incredible enough!
I've been drumming for 20 years +. But what I learnt from this video was life changing. #drums #drummers #drummertips #proaudio #presonus #proaudio
first drum tuning video i enjoyed.
Such a nice guy we would love to take him out for dinner if every drops in Australia Down Under maybe start with the Norman Hotel
Hilarious. How do I tune my drums? I get my drum tech to do it :)
I bet Jonahan has been using the same size toms for a long time, and probably the same shell configuration to know that 3 1/2 turns on the lugs get fairly close to the tunings he likes. I saw Jonathan Moffett with Elton John; his drums did sound like ARMAGEDDON :-))
+Randy Woolum You know that he didn't start with set up like this. He worked his ass off to get to where he is. He deserves this.
4:10 To all you Smurfs out there who say dumb shit like "But Buddy Rich played only a 4 piece kit." Or "that kit is too big."
You simply don't have enough musical vision.
@RageicaNiels he actually uses 2 piccolo's custom-made for him
haha the guy at the end said it was awesome and he said "whatever" with a face and everything
You Sir! are a freak of nature. :)
I'll have to settle for practicing my heel toe with just one pedal. Playing the pipe organ with your feet is something else.
Does the "30 years with MJ" include the years the Ricky Lawson was his drummer?
What a beast!!
really awesome
24x22 bass drums woo!
Fun to listen to!
I'd like to have head this live. On a computer with at smallish set of speakers I hear no distinction between bass drums really.
Yeah!!! That's Real Cool...On The En-No-Vating Side....♥
Jonathanneeds to film his feet when playing the triple threat bass drums so we can see his coordination. That would be a treat ..
Great advice
@RageicaNiels He's got two, right near the Hi-Hat, and directly in front of him.
Thank you
I love Sugarfoot but it makes you wonder why michael never used him in the studio
wooooww..., i really love it...
Did he say "I use thunder" ??
yeah. I think they could have paid more attention in the recording to make his point more clearly.
beat @ 9.20...siiick!!
Dat bass drum sounds so soothingly sexy
totally dug the tunings of the drums but thought just about everything sound crappy not the actual drums themses. johnathan moffet is one of the greats! but the recording of the drums i thought was not very good especially on the kicks. :( but totally digging the cymbalsss
Wow triple threat... his a wwe superstar.
What does the guy off-camera says to him @ 23:10 that makes him say 'Whatever' hahahahaha
top man from chris
I'm not drumming, I'm making music!
The god of drummers!
Sure he plays 5 bass drums. He's not paying for them or carrying them..
or tuning them!
Well said
the snare is one octave and a half step higher than a regular tuning!!!
MJ's music is the foundation of who I am as a musician. Every drum groove I play can be traced back to Sugarfoot.
Awesome!! & the best explanation on RUclips!!!
very awesome drummer..think I've found my idol drummer!! lol
check out the cymbal grove @ 9:02 !!!!! he's legit!
