- In today's video I am sharing my second favourite EPP shape, the jewel. It's a lovely shape that fits nicely with hexagons and diamonds and in this video I show you the English paper piecing patchwork techniques needed to baste and sew them together and I give you ideas for layouts and projects.

Yes I started off with a hexie quilt years ago. The jewels are something a little different. I love your little mini quilt so must have a look at that video, it is really pretty. Your work is so neat. Thanks for all the ideas Emma.

I've been working on a jewel project in reds and creams, in a star pattern, with a hexagon in the center of the short sides, then a larger hexi between all the stars. This is the first I've seen a video on jewels. Love it. Thank you Emma.

Ove your work Emma and the fact its mostly hand sewing as I don't have a machine. Your videos are so thorough and you explain everything and don't assume everyone knows the terminology as some of us are complete novices . Emma, you do such a lovely job with your videos. Question: do you use other stitches besides the whip stitch?
I only use whip stitch to sew them together. I use other stitches for quilting, embroidery etc 😊🌸

Yes if I use paper I remove it after it has been stitched together. But I mostly use hexiform which is left inside

I made my own or bought hexiform ones from Ashmead Designs
do you remove the papers after you have glued them in?

I've never seen you make any patchwork using coffins, it's strange that younger maker's don't seem to use this old template any more.
It’s not a shape I like I’m afraid, I like thinking of nice things while I’m stitching and I think all I would think about whilst using it would be coffins!
Well, it's just a name, it's not the shape of a coffin is it!
Why wouldn’t you trim off the dog ears? Wouldn’t that make it easier to stitch?
No, you risk the seam allowance not being long enough over the point if you trim and then you get a hole or the paper showing through because the fabric isn’t long enough. Hope that helps
