  • I feel as if enough has already been said about Midnight Oil’s final concert and I have little else to add. I’ll let the performance speak for itself, except that my rather poor reproduction doesn’t really do it justice. I would have liked to have been sitting a little closer and at less of an angle, but all things being considered, I’m happy to have gotten a seat with a view, for most of the time, of all members of the band (sorry Leah and Liz). And I never would have managed competing with the diehard Powderworkers for a position at the barrier. At over 3 hours and 45 minutes, a total of 40 songs, it was a truly epic performance. I recorded songs as my fancies took me, but I think I’ve ended up with an interesting collection of both old and new:
    I'm the Cure (01:01)
    Tone Poem (04:34)
At the Time of Writing (10:41)
    Nobody's Child (15:44)
    We Are Not Afraid (20:33)
Who Can Stand in the Way (25:06)
    US Forces (29:20)
    Drop in the Ocean (33:35)
    Now or Never Land (37:31)
    Only the Strong (43:28)
    Best of Both Worlds (48:43)
    Last Frontier (52:41)
    Gadigal Land (59:01)
    Read About It (01:03:40)
    My Country (01:09:53)
    No Time for Games (01:13:22)
    Blue Sky Mine (01:19:56)
I would very much have liked to have recorded a couple of the songs after ‘Blue Sky Mine’ but by then both my batteries were dead. Enjoying the encores without worrying about videoing was actually a great way to see The Oils out.

It’s so sad these guys aren’t touring anymore as they are one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen hundreds if not thousands). It’s a shame that most people only know them for Beds are Burning, because their whole catalog is awesome.

@@jasondalton-earls9972 Crickey, I didn't realise that "Bear" had passed away. :-( Was aware that the Oils have had 4 bassists Bear, Giffo, Bones, now Adam V. but my vid/live memories are of the latter 3. 10-1 was the album that hooked me, then went retro after decades of appreciation/"obsession" according to some Kiwi infidels LoL

I still can't believe how awesome the band played over the course of this final tour. It was amazing right to the end. I saw them in Adelaide in late March (from the second row) & it reminded me of them at their prime as a live act - & as good as gig of the band I was at over my 44 years of seeing them play live (Arkaba Hotel Top Room 1978 - AEC 2022). Many thanks for sharing this great video. What experiences & memories the band have given us to treasure.

It certainly was a great final tour. If you're going out, it's always best to go out on a high, and as you said, the band was sounding as good as they ever had. Everyone attending those shows will have plenty of wonderful memories. Glad you enjoyed my rather pathetic attempt at capturing some of those memories. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks for the upload, its a great record of a fantastic and special night. I drove up from Vic (2 hours the other side of Melb) to be there at the Horden. Wasn't going to miss it. Bonus for me was on Saturday Arvo, around Gundagi I remembered there was a gig on at Canberra but wasn't sure when. Quick check of the website and yep that night, with tix still available. Of course I got one. Parked up nearby and walked in to the arena as the Oils took the stage. Turned out to be a very great weekend.🤘🎤🎸🎸🥁 🤘

Thanks very much John. I'm quite happy with this video. Of course, I would have liked to have been a little closer but I was lucky to get tickets at all. When I started out videoing at concerts, I always wanted to be down the front. However, I soon learnt that recording sound from there produces very poor results. Getting good sound is much harder than getting good images. These days I go for the better sound. If that means the figures on stage are smaller, so be it. This was an unbelievable event and I'm very pleased that I got to experience it.

I just watched your video start to finish and am starting it again. Nicely done! I like your set list (I hadn't realized it was a minor piece of their full set - I thought it was an unusual selection for them - some of my favorites. I hate to say I'm glad your batteries were low, but you really did deserve to be fully in the moment for the encores. This was a great tour, probably my favorite (granted only only started catching them live in 1990). They left me inspired (as usual) with a sense of peace and gratitude. Oh, and they were in absolutely top form. Pete's best singing.

Thanks for commenting. I'm glad you enjoyed my video. It would have been good to have been a little closer but I was lucky to get tickets at all - they were in very hot demand. Yes, it was a terrific tour. The band were all in great form. This final show was unbelievable. It just went on and on. 40 wonderful songs in total. The full setlist is here, in case you haven't seen it:

You're right about enjoying those last songs in the moment. And once I no longer had my camera to consider I really did get into them. Having said that, it would have been good to have captured just one of those huge numbers to have finished my video off with. Maybe "Power and the Passion" would have summed up the night well. There is a chance that some official footage of this show might one day be released. Fingers crossed.
