Sherburn in Elmet is the last of the three places in this part of Yorkshire which explicitly use the in-Elmet suffix. It was, as with the others, once associated with the post-Roman kingdom of Elmet
Sherburn is located on a ridge of Permian limestone which is above an alluvial plain in the Ouse Valley. The Roman road connecting Castleford with Tadcaster and York once ran along this ridge
The name Sherburn derives from the Old English "scir" meaning bright or pure, and "burn" which means stream or spring. The name refers to the clarity of the local streams on which it stands
Sherburn is associated with King Athelstan, who in 927 become the first King of England. In 937 he gave the manor of Sherburn to the Archbishop of York
Athlestan is referenced in the name of one of the local schools - Athelstan Primary - and often erroneously at a site close to All Saints’ church. I’ll explain that when we get there
Until the early 20th century the village was almost self supporting, not only with grocers, bakers and butchers but with all kinds of trades like blacksmiths and wheelwrights
The village is famed for a type of aircraft which was crucial in WWII, and it also once had a massive mansion which was lived in by a man heavily associated with the South Yorkshire coal mines

I lived in sherburn about 50 years starting from 1961 to early 2000s and some of it changed beyond recognition while other places remain the same. Thanx for featuring it, brought bzck back so many memories 😊
Lived in Sherburn for twenty years. Didn't have a supermarket back rhen, uts changed so much! Takes me back, used to love cycling around and walking my dogs 😊
This randomly appeared in my recommended. I have to say this is amazing and thank you for doing this! I grew up here. Played on those streets, went to the school, sneaking onto the airfield with my mates, even had my first job at the local Tesco which you just managed to capture on camera at 17:33. I even recognised some of the faces in the background of some shots. You even managed to capture my mums house on camera too! I could navigate this place with my eyes shut. Growing up here and being bored teenagers with no money we explored every nook and cranny of this village. I know it all like the back of my hand but It was amazing seeing it from someone else's perspective. So many memories! I live and work abroad now and it's been a while but I think it's time I took a trip home!
