i love how playing the same game but slightly altered makes your brain believe it's a whole different game, making you enjoy it like it's your first time playing it
Mirror mods are one of the simplest yet most effective way to rediscover games, especially open worlds like San Andreas for example
@@aSkyclad whats a mirror mode
@Claude Anderson Twilight Princess, cos on GameCube Link was left handed, but made more sense for him to be right handed for wii players. So they flipped the whole game
@@AnthonyWabo basically what you're seeing in the video here, same game but the view and inputs are mirrored horizontally
This makes me realize how much of hl2 is just turning right.
_cue zoolander joke_
Half Life 2 is just a reverse a reverse NASCAR game
i guess it's the same as with movies: movement or people looking to the right of the screen give the feeling of progress in the movie plot whereas the opposite direction feels regressive.
I guess the ultimate way of replaying HL2 will eventually be Mirrored Dark-Life 2. Left is right, day is night - perfect.
Exactly my thoughts
Dark-Death 2.
@@sarekchhanthoun2412 Dark-Death -2
Exactly what I thought of. Can that be combined with MMOD?
Mirrored Dark Life 2: Update.
Based on Half-Life 2: Update.
The worst thing to me is the mirrored characters, they go from looking normal to looking like the swamp folk from Fallout 3 Point Lookout
Wait, even the character models are flipped?
They look the same to me...
@@planescaped the models are indeed flipped. look at the text on Alyx's or Eli's shirts. it appears to slightly break some animations for NPCs as well.
The whole game is flipped, inputs included, then mod author flipped back textures containing texts so they'd appear normal. The only things not flipped are the hud and weapon models
@@aSkyclad it would've been interesting if they did a counter strike and made the models left handed
this is wrong in every way. this quite literally flips hl2 on its head. every time you round a corner you end up confused because your so used to going left, when NOW you supposed to go right. its like replaying the game all over again when you aren't entirely sure what comes next, even though the ONLY thing that has changed it the level layouts. its completely disorienting and i fucking love it.
I think the coolest thing about this mod is it gives you a chance to experience Half-Life 2's atmosphere with fresh eyes in a way.
The way these levels look is so burned into our mind that we don't even really think about the aesthetics or design of them anymore. Like we just look at a screenshot and go "yup, that's a Half-Life 2 level" and don't think about it much further. Having it mirrored like this gets your brain to really absorb what it's looking at and fully appreciate the details and atmosphere.
PS- This is actually a trick that artists use to check their work as their drawing it. Sometimes when you're drawing something you can lose sight of what it might look like to an outside observer, so you can flip the image to make the image's strengths and weaknesses much more visible. What's happening here is basically the same thing.
In a way, it makes the world feel bigger and brings the atmosphere that one becomes so accustomed to back, and It reminded me of why I loved HL2's world
@@Pinnaporaptor Valve games manage to catch lightning in a bottle like no other studio. All the systems and art come together to make something even greater than the sum of it's already great parts. Something really special was happening at Valve from 1999-2012
somehow flipping the game like this makes the enviroments feel more natural to me
idk how to describe it, but like, kliener's lab somehow looks more labby, and the rooftops feel more real
maybe it's just that the disorientation really makes me feel like im in a new city for the first time
@@ruskah0307 I agree in that regard, it could be because we've grown used to those set pieces and areas, but simply mirroring them makes them appear 'larger', even if they are virtually the same.
flipping art mostly just makes sure your shit is symmetrical if it needs to be and makes any quirks of your handedness more apparent
When I first saw this mod, I thought "Wow, that looks neat, I'll try it"
I am still trying to get rid of the new muscle memory I got.
10/10 mod!

AU NU FREAKY DEAKY IV DAMKE!
G-Man mirrored looks like what happens when you flip your drawing.
imagine having someone who never played hl2 start with this mod then tell them that was modded
It's not only that you know what these maps should look like and they feel off, the game is designed in a certain way that only makes sense when you play it correctly, when you mirror it your brain gets the clues implanted in map design differently. Have you ever noticed why a lot of games make you turn right more than left? Thats because its literally a matter of right or wrong, your brain percieves certain directions with certain feelings. A lot of movies use that in form of set deisgn, lighting, etc. and so do games, thats why when you mirror a map it feels compleatly wrong
hm, what if you turn right more because the maps were designed by right handed people- and If left handed people were to make them, would there be more left turns?
This is the closest we'll ever get to experiencing this game for the first time again.
Every single corridor you walk through I expect what the original maps did, this mod boggles my brain to no end.
Tried this the day of release with my brother and the whole time all I could say was, "it feels like I'm going backwards". That muscle memory kicked into overdrive too so we kept turning the right way only to get bamboozled😂 10/10 for uniqueness
I wish every game had a feature like this, it organically aids in replayability without the devs having to do anything. Heck, I'm pretty sure that this is even incredibly easy to implement, you'd just have to mirror the player camera and then reverse left and right for the controls.
Twilight Princess has this as its "Hero Mode", where it just switches to the mirrored world from the Wii version of the game.
it was easy, but some textures and models had to be flipped too, and the game needs to be playtested again to make sure that nothing remains mirrored. But yeah
Hard agree, it's so easy to implement yet so effective to make you rediscover the game in a brand new way. What I would give to have something like that for the original Deus Ex
@@aSkyclad skyclad in the flesh, or rather, in the comments section
The Shadow of the colossus remake has this as well, and I was only able to play the start of the game due to getting lost all the time.
let's wait for someone to say "HL2 MIRRORED MMOD COMPATIBILITY PATCH"
This mixed with Dark Life 2 would be like playing a whole new game
1:08 That first picture reminds me of Resistance 2... Speaking of, remember how most games around that time were various shades of brown? Well I feel Resistance 2 was various shades of yellow, because that seems to bet the color I remember the most...
I actually like some mirrored maps better than retail ones shown.
idk why but the mirrored version kinda makes me look around more than the original xD
Man I played half life 2 from start to finish exactly 22 or 23 times and this simple change makes my brain melt. Incredible
i finished half life 2 like a month ago so i don't notice anything wrong half the time lol
This is seriously confusing and interesting! Love your vids btw.
The Uncharted games had an unlockable mode that mirrors every map in the game. It has just about the same effect.
And I really like that. It's a simple tweak that gets you a lot more mileage out of the games you know inside out, and it gives you back a little bit of that feeling when you first played it. You have to actively look around again to figure out where to go. You start noticing things that you forgot about, because you're so familiar with every normal map that you gloss over them.
Wonderful that it is actually possible to do in HL2 (maybe HL1 too though I can't think of anyone investing free time to do this). And hm, I expected that you'll "mirror" your intro too (at least the face without the "RadHaz" on it).
damn, they made the whole game left-handed, that's nice of them.
Mirror mods are so rad. There's one for super metroid and experiencing it is surreal, so it's cool to see the concept done here too. Another mod for super metroid that rotates the map 90 degrees onto its side, requiring heavy use of walljumps and nifty acrobatics to get around.
I'm not quite so sure we'll ever see a rotated HL2.
Hm. Now that sounds hella cursed.
I must try.. to rotate the player's gravity... And view angles, and hitbox, and resolve any bugs with the interaction with the physics- but once I do that, this will be interesting. Even if It isn't super playable 👀
Thank for the idea lol
Looking at this footage makes me uncomfortable in a way I didn't think was possible.
Oh shit Half Life 2 master quest edition
My favorite part of this is just how everything really is pretty much normal, it doesn't really look or feel out of place and it feels like a normal game if you hadn't had any previous knowledge of HL2 before playing the mod. Yet it all just feels so wrong at the same time.
It’s funny.
Apparently something similar happens with supermarket design. They’re designed to get people to move in a spiral based on what side of the road we drive on.
In two English speaking countries the UK and US; You’ll enter a Tesco on the left hand side of the front of the building and spiral around to the checkouts on the right but a WalMart you’ll enter on the right hand side and spiral to pay on the left.
What I noticed from the footage of the mod is ‘Half Life’ is very right handed orientated. The GMan is off centre just by a third and most points of interest are on the right hand side. Wonder if people who read from right-to-left think the mod has made the game better, or even left handed people.
interesting
goes to show how one simple change can mess up with your mind, we need more mods like this to be honest
Just found this channel and wow I love the content! And the music is absolutely amazing! Great music for work, holy shit! Subbed to both channels! Legendary stuff!
HL2 player here, can confirm this is incredibly jarring
Man I love experimenting with mods. As this mod is, very impressive. How did they make the maps mirrored? I have to try this!
hi)
the screen was flipped and the left/right controls were inverted. and then some textures and models were flipped, so that they get flipped twice and actually look normal 👀
@@NoVIcE_Source Yeah, this mod kind of reminds me of the Mandela effect.
what's cool is that some locations (like rooftop) feel like new locations. I sometimes experience it in games with backtracking when i find an alternate route to the previous location and realize that its the old one only when i already passed it.
also, playing it with inverted controls will make the mod obsolete lol
It actually does use inverted controls. There are no custom maps in the mod.
Seeing the train intro flipped like that made me extremely uncomfortable
Darn, this is great, its such a simple idea but a lot of work goes into making it, next time I replay the game I will give this a go. I need to hurry up and finish the first version of my npcs dialog smartification.
I've always loved mirror mode in the Ratchet & Clank games. It always helped keep the games feeling fresh, even after many replays. Glad that I can experience the same thing in HL2 now.
Haven't even replayed HL2 all too many times, but just seeing the footage alone trips me out so much
Its like nostalgia you never had
This is like playing Twilight Princess all over again. I first played in on Game Cube, and then again years later on the Wii. Everything was mirrored between them.
It's always a good day whenever you upload and thank you for the really awesome mods you cover on here also, it's pretty awesome that there's still so much passion and creativity for this engine and making games for it! Off to Modb I go haha
Thanks so much :)

It's amazing how such a simple change can be so weird and disorienting

Pretty amazing how such a simple concept changes the game so significantly, it's the first time in years I was able to sit through the snoozefest that is Water Hazard
"It's like everything is backwards, and I'm not even left handed!"-Freeman
Thank you for having a quieter voice than most RUclipsrs I watch. I can watch good content, and make sure that everyone I live with can stay comfy and asleep. Thanks. (:
just now realized how much the game makes u turn/go/give more attention to what's happening on the right side of your view
This mod seems pretty easy to make too. All you’re doing is mirroring all the 3D elements (so exclusions are things such as the HUD), then they flipped the viewmodel around so it looks right, and then inverted controls. The viewmodel swaying confirms this, it’s why the side-to-side look movement is the opposite direction.
1:20 what artist feel when they dont flip their canvas
This is so damn trippy to watch it is subconciously messing with my muscle memory. My brain goes out the train door to the right but the video tells me it's the left now
Mirrored Gman isn't real, he can't hurt you.
*Mirrored Gman:* 1:24
This Mod its woooow, I've been playing HL2 since the release too and playing Mirrored my symptoms are:
Feeling like I'm the game playing for the first time.
-Total loss of aiming skills.
-Feeling that maps are small and darker.
-After playing, there is this strange feeling of mirroring in real life too as if I'm not in my room/ house.
It's such an amazing experience, this mod really stirs the memories and leaves the head confused. It's a unique experience that I can't explain very well.
How much I envy people that play Half-Life 2 for the first time...
I've never realised how having openings and clutter on my right eye side has felt so correct in most every game after watching this.
why brain hurt
edit: i was just going to leave this here as a throwaway funny comment, but after watching the video and seeing the maps, i came up with my own theory.
we've all been playing this game for years, we know every nook and cranny of these maps and the illusion of the source engine has been broken countless times. but doing as little as mirroring the game, we change it just enough to make it simultaneously recognizable and fresh, which really restores some of that previously lost illusion. something i noticed about this footage is that the maps somehow feels a lot more open, i think this happens because our base game knowledge and sense of direction makes us see the vanilla levels as a narrow path and kinda erases the background details that are not important for our progress, but here my brain is tricked into thinking this is something new and unexplored.
When i played this i felt like a kid again playing the game for the 1st time, it makes me look at the map more with all the little details, takes away all that muscle memory so i have to concentrate, really wish there was these mods for Black Mesa and the episodes too
This is such a simple concept. Why is my head legit hurting just trying to comprehend these levels?
For some reason flipped maps make some areas look bigger than in the original game, like the main Square looks even bigger somehow, the inhouse area at 0:32 looks *way* bigger and more open, meanwhile some areas look more isolated like the cafeteria of the trainstation or the area where you get over the fence at 2:27
This is a simple change, just flipped maps, yet it changes how we perceive them
Seems like a brilliant way to make old games feel new again.
In cinema there's convention that certain directions of movement feel more "wrong" to the camera and these are usually avoided. This mod just turns every "right" design choice en HL2 into a "wrong" one and that's really fun!
You so nearly got it. You even said it. Right. In HL2 you damn nearly always go to the right.
Here, you always go to the left. And it's fuckin wrong. Not just that it's not what you remember, it's because it's to the left.
finally, after so many years, half-life 2 for left-handed people
Gordon: you spin me right round baby right round like a record baby right round round round
Having only played hl2 once and somewhat recently it is a bit strange but not totally weird like it would if I had played it years ago over and over
1:21 Even The G-Man's face is mirrored. You can tell by the eyebrows.
4:01 Even the dock number has changed from 87 to 78, but the numbers look rightwise instead of being "mirrorwise!" THAT's attention to detail!
i think its better to experience this mod using left handed viewmodels
Thanks for the heart!
Its interessting how much simply mirroring can change the brains feeling entirely, even tho we all know the thing we see
Mario kart has done it before and it works really well
I believe some areas here simply stand out much more and become much more affordable to navigate through. The shot composition of some of the vistas is also similarly much more interesting at times. Of course some areas aren't as well affected as others and others just feel like Mario Kart's Mirror Mode.
My left eye started to feel pain when I saw those mirrored clips of the chapters. I don't think I would be able to play this mod seriously but seems pretty fun.
It's a happy day when you post
I love freaky deaky stuff like this, simple concept, but wacky execution. Also cool music :DD
It's bizzare, because we've all been conditioned to think of 'right' as the direction, in which things progress. This directionality is very important both in games and movies. Reversing that obviously would feel extremely weird.
Now we just need to combine this mod with Dark-Life 2 for the ultimate familiar yet trippy Half-Life 2 experience.
Now i want a mod that that plays with my mind more than this
I would pay good money to see Big Mac Davis play this. I think out of anyone, he's the most familiar with HL2 maps, and it would literally give him a stroke
i hate everything about this mod trying to speed run through this after playing HL2 for so long it just messes with your brain so much
This Is The Closest Thing I Will Get Playing The Entire Game Blind Again
They basically Twilight Princessed this Game. Anyone with a Wii would know what I mean. The only thing missing is to make Gordan Freeman left handed.
What would make it even freakier is if it was mirrored but the lighting stays the same to stay consistent
Nice video Hazard and what the hell
The first line when you go into the Moddb page is: "POV: You drank the water"
bro really said "freaky beaky"💀
I haven't even played HL2 that much and this hurts my brain.
I played a doom 2 wad that mirrors the levels.
I felt like crying.
I'm glad game devs don't recycle maps by just mirroring them or playing them backwards.
don't give them ideas
This is like when I used look through the mirror at home at the street outside and would be confused cos everything looked the same just backwards
Nice Intro music!Love it. P.S. Can you make letsplay of this mod?
I will stream it soon, after I finish EZ2 streams
I now need to install this and have my dad who hasn't play half life 2 in 15 years play it
Another epic video by Hazaddy
This and dark life at the same time would be a mind fuck
This is what it feels like to play half life 2 after taking too much benadryl
yeah just watching the first 20 secs of your video already fucks me up big time.
This reminds me of playing tf2 maps mirrored with dustbowl just breaks my mind and upward. It just makes me don't know where to go and makes me feel like a noob at playing tf2 again
Imagine introducing someone to HL2 and having them play this but not telling them it's a mod then down the line if they ever end up playing HL2 again they'll think they're insane because it's all backwards.
Great video! When will the next stream be?
Tomorrow hopefully
