Headphone reviews are infuriating. Some people say the M50x are completely neutral and may be too flat, and then other audiophiles say they sound horribly V shaped and harsh. Then you find some reviews saying headphone X is the best sounding headphone they've ever heard, and then someone else says it's mediocre and recommends headphone Y. I recently bought the M50x and think the treble is quite sharp with lots of sibilance at volume...ugh.
I meannn, I did warn people about the highs: "the boosted highs... sometimes sound a little too sharp and piercing, which means that these headphones will be more fatiguing over time". I understand your pain though, the best "review" is to test headphones yourself since everyone's ears are different.
For monitoring audio and mixing they are great. For pleasure IMO the M40x are better. The sound stage, the size and comfort are a big deal to me. They have bass but not heavy or unnecessary like the M50x. Head to a guitar center store to try out both and you hear the difference.
Here's my mini response review absolutely no one asked for. :D I've had these headphones since they came out and let me tell you they are some of the best I've ever used. And I've used a lot of headphones. You can really distinguish between FLAC and mp3 with them and man do I love that. My only complaint is: high treble and even then that's just my personal preference as I don't like "sharp" sounds, they hurt my ears. I'm super glad you mentioned that in the review. The multiple cord options and detachability was wonderful. And I actually like the hinges! It's a nice throwback to the Sony MDR line. (Which were the headphones I used before these!) But of course I like that aesthetic. And yes, they are sturdy as hell. I'm super clumsy and have dropped these things way too many times. I can shove them in my bag and go and I don't have to worry about them cracking like skullcandies I used when I was like....13. And I agree comfort wise. I can use these for HOURS at a time and the only thing that happens is my ears get a bit warm. To the point where I can actually use these as musical earmuffs in winter. I love the sound in them. The bass is so nice. It feels...deep? I guess is the right word? TL;DR These headphones make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. And as you said, are there better? Well, Sennheisers exist so there's your answer LOL
I enjoyed your review. I feel like I want to buy them but are hesitating because of the sharpness you are describing. Is this only on very high volumes? What kind of genres do you usually listen too? I'm thinking of Jazz and Classical especially, where this "sharpness" might make me go crazy?
wow I'm so sorry I just saw this reply! I honestly haven't had any trouble as long as what I'm using has an equalizer! And oh boy I listen to just about everything from Kanye West to Fleetwood Mac and back again and quite loudly, too. Honestly of you wanna listen loudly as long as you tweak the eq you should be good. :D
Jose Fabio El que conoces My apologies for the late reply but to answer your question, these are by far the best headphones at this price point. My brother has a pair of Sennheisers (don't know the model) and while it pained him to admit it, he said these sounded much better than his at double the price. I have enjoyed these immensely and I suspect I will for the foreseeable future. I have zero regrets with my purchase of the ATH-M50x's and I suspect there are many others who are enjoying these as much as I am.
I liked the no nonsense clarity of this video review. I was searching for a review that was honest and clear, I found it. So, I will now order these headphones from Amazon. Thanks to ODi Productions, and this compelling video review.
I've got these headphones and highly recommend them. I use them for mixing beats that you can hear on my channel for example for anyone producing music with these headphones. Great review!
+omitobeats Omitoooo!! Thanks for checking out my review, and if you guys are reading this, check out this man's channel for some of the best beats on RUclips!!!
I know this comment is a year old but i have the m50x and i listen to a lot of trance. For me they kind of lack in deep bass and have tight bass. I switch to my Sol republics when i want to sacrifice some mids and clarity for some deeper bass unless i listen to vocal trance. Otherwise these headphones are really great.
I'm saving up for this and I expect to get them around November. I've watched many reviews of these pair of headphones and I'm convinced that I'll be getting them. Hopefully I'll be able to convince my sister to stop buying Beats if I let her try these on.
I honestly thought the m50x were the best sounding headphone I ever have used. But after getting the m40x i am sorry to say m50x really don't sound so good.
Agreed, I returned mine due to how large they are and being that they aren't comfortable. Bought a refurb of the m40x and wow it's a world of a difference in comfort, size and audio quality. The m50x were too bass heavy for me while the m40x were just right plus the sound stage … the sound stage is awesome. The m50x have no sound stage at all … however they are a good alternative to beats is heavy bass is your thing. The bass is much tighter than beats plus the cost.
Ordered some m40x's, now waiting, ordered fat angled ear pads to increase the comfort! I hope Z Reviews was right in saying that the 40's are better than the 50's. and they are £50 cheaper!
mac de_marco Everything he said about the m40x is true. I had the m50x and the m40x with the zmf cowhide earpads offer superior sound and comfort. The m50x really is over rated.
Updated with a "more modern sound signature." What does that mean? I've owned the original ATH-M50 for many years now and it's not exactly flat, but it's still clear and accurate sounding. Does this mean they colored the sound more for the ATH-50x model? How much did they exaggerate the bass or scoop the mids? If so, that's unfortunate. I was thinking about upgrading for the comfort aspects, but I don't want to sacrifice sonic accuracy. I often use them as monitors when performing, so they're not just for leisure.
I listened carefully to everything you said and as an owner of this pair (for a year) I actually agree with everything that you have said. I was hoping for you to say something about the sharp highs which can be a little harsh at times :). Now that is an honest review! Your audio reviews actually remind me of my all time favorite audio channel 'Hi-Fi Heaven', which kind of died for some reason. No uploads for half a year now :( I miss them. I can't find a channel which is about hi-fi only unfortunetely. Well maybe because it is not a very populair topic :/ Your headphone reviews are fantastic though!
+Danté Wow that is some high praise!!! Appreciate it Dante, and definitely I had to address the highs cause they do get harsh at times. Still, a great pair of headphones for the price, and I love that bass response. Thanks for watching as always :-)
+TrollsAnyWay I own both the headphones and the sound quality is definetly much better on the m50x. I always prefer the clouds for gaming as they are more comfortable to wear and have a wider soundstage. Both have excellent build quality and I prefer to use the m50x on the go as they are also portable.
I got the M50x's about a year ago. They were ok at first, they were clear and not distorted at all. They have excellent sound isolation (Better than most active headphones) as well. The thing that stands out the most though is the bass, there is just SO MUCH BASS. They sound great with harder rock or electronic music but there is just no way at all to enjoy classical or classic rock with them. On top of that they are like wearing a vice on your head. I couldn't wear them more then a few minutes without my ears being in agony. I ended up returning the M50x's to get the Sennheiser 598's and couldn't be happier.
+William Schlesinger Thanks for the input William! I do agree that the bass can be quite overwhelming at times, which does ruin the balance for certain genres of music. Sennheiser makes amazing products as well, and they excel in the mids/highs. Glad to hear you found the right headphones!
okay heres a fun fact i bought the audio technica ath-s500 for around Rm290 where i live and i live in malaysia, and i was really happy because i got it for 110 bucks cheaper, and after a few months..... i decided to buy the m50x with cost around 800 to 899 which is pretty reasonable price for high end headphones where i live, and people will actually pay for it. Funny thing is,most of you probably know what beats is, and most of you agree the sound it makes sucks..... and it costs around 1000 to 1300 for their so called "limited edition" headphones, and i lookee at the beats for the frequency it has but it was in a glass case so i couldn't see it, and the salesman came to me and said,hi...looking to buy headphones? i said yes and he said if u want actual good quality and good sound go look at the audio technicas and Sennheiser headphones,he also said yeah beats are really popular but if u want better sound beats just doesnt have it so i was like this salesman rather make less money than sell me a pair of shit headphones. thx for reading all the way........just my personal thought :D
Great review. Ive had the original m50 since 2007 and the headband leather underneath started ripping and falling apart. Was interesting to see how the new gen versions compare.
+Verak03 As a fellow owner of the original M50, I'd say the M50x is a very nice refresh that brings some modern features (mostly the shorter, detachable cable), without really tampering with the sound at all.
Picked up a used pair of M50X with only short cable off OfferUp for $40. Condition was ok, scratches, dings and smell of smoke. Washed them up with 8:1 diluted water/ vinegar , soaked the ear pads in enzyme odor neutralizer and air dried. Have the ear pads in a sealed Tupperware with activated carbon in a bowl to soak up any lingering smells. Just picked up a like new pair of M40X today with both included cables. They don't appear to be broken in yet and for $30 with no odor! I wanted to try these MX products and compare to my SHP9500 budget open back and 10yr old Sony V6. I like them for sure. Might pick up some DT770 Pro for $80 if they will agree to the price soon.
I had the chance to demo the DT 770 80 ohm and the M50x side by side and I personally found the DT 770 to be better all around while both being amped. of course this is my opinion but I really think the M50x is over hyped. neither will make a good studio monitor because they are both "fun" and V shaped, but for listening for fun I think the DT 770 wins in the price bracket, especially because of the fact that every part of the 770 is replaceable and comes with velour ear pads from the get go. it's a no brainer for me and that's why I'm glad I didn't jump on the M50 hype train and I went with the 770s
Great sound for a great price, I said goodbye to my skullcandy aviator and now enjoying my new ATH M 50 X, a recommendation for everybody, listen PINK FLOYDS DARK SIDE OF THE MOON with these headphones it's amazing !!!
I stept up from Steelseries Siberia USB illuminated to the m50x and well... they kinda literally changed my life!!! They changed the way i look at audio products and make me appreciate what i'm hearing.
They're not as loud as beats and they don't have as much bass, this is because they're really accurate which is great for professionals and audio editing but the beats are better for casual listening imo.
I'm an amateur producer who needs monitor headphones. All the people saying the bass is heavy concerns me. Is that true? People on amazon said the M50's (not the m50x's) had a flat frequency response. I need a pair for studio mixing which is about the same price as the M50x's.
You MIGHT be better off with the M40x for accuracy, but you can definitely make the M50x work for producing. Tons of studios use M50x (not as primary source, but secondary and for monitoring). Either way, mixing on headphones is not really how the pros do it. We use studio monitors.
***** Thanks for the reply! My search has lead me toward more accurate headphones than the ATH-M series. I'm aware that studio monitors are the best option, but headphones are cheaper and I'm actively improving my mixes, and I feel like headphones bring the sound to me better and make it more personal. Most importantly, I can't afford studio monitors. I also have several hi-fi speaker sets in my home to test my mixes with consumers. I've gotta make my decision soon before all this Christmas money is drained! Thanks for your thoughts and great production quality on your videos! :)
Ahhh no worries, that's exactly how I got started. And truth be told, it's more important that you KNOW your equipment and how it translates to the real world. If you know your equipment, then you can mix on anything pretty much. Studio monitors just helps cut down the trial and error time :P Good luck!
***** Hey, thanks for your reply and input! We need more content creators who love interacting with their audience and I appreciate it! After a couple more days of research, I went with the incredibly ugly but powerful Beyerdynamics DT 990 Pro headphones, and bought a FiiO E10k amp to power up that bad boy and all of its 250 ohms. With tax and my mom's Amazon Prime, it was just shy of the $200 I had right after Christmas (I'm 17 and unemployed). Boy oh boy do those things sound clean... No distortion even with my amp turned up to about 8 on the high gain setting, and the distortion higher than that is so barely noticeable that I think it might even be in my imagination. Highs are crisp and detailed, and lows have character without being too muddy or bleeding into the mediums. I hear every pluck of a guitar, and can even hear if the guitarist so much as kisses the strings with his finger. I can hear every flaw in a poor mix, and even the smallest level of static in a live orchestra recording from even professional production companies. No flaw escapes my criticism, and no brilliant mix fails to shine through these cans and their wide soundstage. I can certainly say I'm never wasting my money on consumer brand headphones or speakers again. These $120 open-back cans which first appeared on Amazon in 2004 turned my 2014 Bose QC 25's into an embarrassment. If you haven't already, I think you should review these bad boys.
Wow, wonderful input my man, I enjoyed reading your review :-) Beyerdynamics is an absolute solid brand and well-respected in the pro audio realm. That is an awesome setup you got going on now. I'll definitely look into featuring a pair of Beyers on the channel, most likely it will be the DT990 or perhaps DT770s
It was actually so true what you said, i never had a decent pair of headphones before decided to do extensive research to find the best pair of headphones for my price range. Ended up going with the ath m50x, i was so excited i listened to them for the first time it was a let down, mainly because i had no clue but after continuous listening with the m50x i absoulutely love these, they are great for everday use. Great video man really went indep.
A good joke needs to be funny, it's not as if it is a major roast because head phones do work with the 7 and the joke is so over used to be funny. I have seen this same comment posted on anything to do with audio products and it has become worse than the people that defend Apple
Thank you very much for your candor. You are a very good reviewer and journalist. Reviewing any subject has, ironically, everything to do with objectivity, and you are clear and unbiased in your work. I wish you continued success.
I just purchased these headphones as my last pair of headphones were falling apart. I typically buy a set of "gaming" headphones so I can have access to a mic, but this time I decided to go for the full headphones build. Honestly after switching from my last pair to these, the difference in quality was outstanding! By far the best purchase I have ever made, excellent buy!
Awesome! Yeah I tend to agree that most "gaming" headsets are pretty subpar quality for the price. If I were to pick one up, I'd go with Sennheiser. If you'd like to add a mic to the M50x, look into "Mod Mic 4.0" and also a cable adapter.
Do you know what?X2's are way better and becoming even better after certain time burning. In the beginning they sounded little strange, but they are becoming extremely nice now...So no need to go back to the M50x's anymore...
Ahh, glad to hear that! Many times, our ears just need to adjust to a new sound signature. I know that after listening to the M50x which is so bright, most headphones sound darker in comparison. But after a while, I hear the same detail as the M50x, but much smoother. Just my input
***** M50-X are good for gaming.I will see how X2's will perform when i get GPU.But i am glad i have the right model of X2 with not glued earpads.I've seen many comments with people complaining about glued pads on their X2's.
||Sofia Fox: People saying m40x is better than m50x in the sense of being more accurate/flat/neutral are wrong. While it is a very good headphone, it is not better than m50x nor more flat. "The m40x have boosted lows and VERY boosted highs. It peaks about 13dbs from 8k to 10k and then there's another 10db peak at around 15-16k. The rest of the frequency is nearly the same as the m50, including that "colored" upper mid hump at 2k. The M50 has more subbass and about the same mid bass as these, which is desirable. I work in a recording studio, and the m50s sound much closer to our nearfield monitors than the m40x due to bass compensation(headphones need a ~6db boost in the lows to account for this) and the exaggerated resonances on the m40x are audible and detrimental to our field. The m50s aren't perfect as they also have a peak at 10k that extends 3db above flat but them drops off to more neutral levels thereafter. The m40x peak even more". Headphones try to achieve the same flatness as speakers and in order to do that they need a slight boost in the lows. So actually, m40x are more accurate only on graphic. Reality is m50x is more accurate and closer to flat than m40x. RUclips sound comparisons aren´t accurate since the audio gets manipulated via RUclips colorations and also the colorations of the headphones or speakers used to listen to these files.||
I have the beats studio that I bought 6 years ago for $300. At the time they were the best headphones that I could use for my ipod touch. I tried several other headphones but had to return them du to poor performance. I have since used my beats studio (lately) for just watching and listening to youtube music videos. They require 2 AAA batteries to work. If the batteries are dead then so are the headphones since you cannot listen through them. The right ear cup is starting to tear apart on mine. After 6 years its time to upgrade to the M50X headphones. Bye Bye Beats!
I wouldn't recommend them personally. A great option would be the beyerdynamic DT770's but only if you have a headphone DAC/amp. Hope this was able to help.
probably v shaped sounding while claiming to be flat, and recessed midrange, and hot treble, and no soundstage. The m40x are better for cheaper price too,get them with hm5 earpad and they are great
The m40x will break on you within a year. No they don't sound better. Engineers at Audiotechnica have to be rolling their eyes into their heads when they see this m40x army randomly piping in how their flat stupid Sony wannabe headphones are somehow better than a headphone with the sheer accolades and higher price point. Like Audiotechnica just loves selling better gear for less money. That's totally legit.
Krystal Myth There have been a couple of basement dwellers/elitists trying their hardest to prove how much shittier these are compared to the M40x. I’d say never fully listen to reviews anyways, but if nearly EVERYONE loves these VS the M40xs, they must be doing something right anyways
love these things. I'm a alcoholic and've fallen on them a fair amount of times and they've shrugged it off like nothing. Sounds great and comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. love the amp hookup too.
Found out about a few months ago that most of my favorite youtubers use these headphones so I decided to check them out. Haven't seen them in person but I think they're great. My dad might be bringing home a brand new pair of these tomorrow when I get back home from school because all of our audio things are broken. We're getting so much bad luck with them. My first 3 headsets broke and then my 4 earphones broke. I hope these will stay long with me if I get them! :)
I spent a lot of time looking up video reviews, and comparing amazon ones. So for wireless I spent big on Sennheiser Momentum 2.0s because I love wireless headphones over the ear headphones. (I am upgrading from BoseTrueSound). I saw a lot of reviews saying these senns are the best quality bluetooth headphones right now. My biggest priority was sound quality, second noise cancelling. These won out over Bose QC35s because of sound quality reviews. For wired, I purchased the m40x. Reviews said it was the most underrated good quality phones for under 100 :) For such a cheap price, I bought these as an addition to try out. I only paid 80! Hoping to be very satisfied!
This was a nice review. I think for the average consumer that is FAR from the audiophile, this has good information and will lead to happy buyers. However, if you have a critical ear, this review does not help. The M50x is not neutral. As was mentioned, the bass hits hard but sometimes overwhelms. Then, the treble is bright but also too piercing. That right there is telling you it is NOT neutral. The M50X was made to grab your attention, not accurately convey sound. You want accurate? Go for the M40x. You want musical, beautiful sound? Get something like a Sennheiser 58X Jubilee or 600.
Great professional presentation and very informative. Just ordered some from Amazon, my first pair of higher end earphones. Looking forward to demoing them with my LG V20 phone. Thanks!
ODi Productions Thank you, hope you continue to upload more great videos. By the way, got mine paired with a Fiio A3 headphone amp for $149.00 out the door from Amazon.
That is a solid combo! Now you can squeeze out better quality from the M50x. And thank you for the kind feedback, there will be more reviews to come soon :-)
As an owner of these for about... 5 Years? I wouldn't praise their build quality much at all. Between flaking pleather on the cups and headband, and mine suffering a broken hinge inhibitor causing the left side to loosely fall away from my ear instead of "clamp" - I'd say they're on the surface: tough and reliable. They'd probably work falling out of a speeding car, but normal prolonged use will eventually render issues with them. That being said, I appreciate their sound and sound signature enough to have replaces the cups and band myself and rig a temp solution for the broken left hinge to keep them in my regular rotation, so let that say something about the way they sound, at the very least.
my pair is arriving tomorrow. im learning music production and my soundcloud is getting better but im doing it all on some hyperx cloud2s and basic monitors. im hoping the quality will be worth the £120!
OD. I'm a drummer/vocalist/composer/producer of 50 yrs. I'm fascinated with your review. Do you actually own all the gear that you review? If you don't actually own the gear how do you HONESTLY review it? I take you as an ethical businessman, so I'm not implying anything scammy. Also, I'm wondering if a blog or video speaking in general of the differences between electronic drums or drum machines, versus acoustic drums. Is that too general? Thanks.
Awesome video! I added Brainwavz HM5 pads and after a little equalization, these headphones sound pretty amazing and are MUCH more comfortable (and massive XD)
If you replace the padding with brainwavz memory foam it makes a night and day difference. Completely makes the comfort and wearability factor go up by a factor of 10.
MY assessment is the ATs in general are great for studio use, mixing, tracking, monitoring, not so much for just "fun" listening. They do have harsh highs, a neutral sound signature. My Hifiman HE400I planar headphones, for sheer music listening for fun and pleasure, are 1000x better. The only thing is the Hifimans don't have massive (tight) bass. But they are 1000x more comfortable, aren't overly boosted, and have non-fatiguing highs. Most of these AT studios aren't comfortable at all for longer sessions, the clamping is tight and painful after a while.
I got the blue pair. Best headphones I ever owned. They slip a bit easier than the M50s, which I have too. The cups are far more comfortable than anything I used and work great for sleeping.
***** Yes ***** I listen to audio books, music playlists, hypnosis tracks, etc when I go to sleep. If I'm not 'passing out' tired, I use that to focus my mind and quiet all the chatter.
I wish I’d watched your review before buying M50xBT so that I would not have been ...for lack of a better word... disappointed for first 15mins of using them. Let me share my experience/review with those interested buyers reading the comments for more opinions: These are MONITOR headphones so be prepared not to get shocked by the extremely amazing/other worldly sound. Be prepared to hear some unheard sounds in your favourite tracks. They’ve sufficient amount of bass, almost perfect mids, and bright highs. Very good(not the best) soundstage. After listening to multiple famous movie scenes and Dolby audio tests I am very confident that the headphones 🎧 can produce quality bass. It’s just not thundering or skull rattling like SONY XB series headphones. Highs sometimes feel fake especially if you’re not used to listening to emphasised highs. This issue can be somewhat fixed with a Bass Boosted equaliser. After some days of using headphones you’ll get used to listening to such sounds and you’ll start appreciating them. If you’ve Bass boosted headphones lying around you’ll jump between both the headphones just because you’ll always want to hear that FULL SPECTRUM sound of quality STUDIO MONITOR headphones 🎧 such as M50xBT. I hope this helps some of you! 🙂👍🏻
Only thing that got me confused is that all other reviews said the M50x have a slightly softened high-end, a bit more toned down, while you said the opposite. Other than that you confirmed the others' remark about the boosted lows.
"...a little too sharp and piercing" in the top end. Very true. The mids and tops are crystal clear, but far too present -- too loud, compared with the lower mids and bottoms. I just bought a set, based entirely on the great reviews, but now I feel like sending them back.
Yeah those highs can be really off-putting, especially for over longer periods of time. You might be interested in checking out some Sennheisers, another brand which presents great value for the money.
I disagree with the last opinion, I think personally, as a live sound engineer, the sonic quality is far better than that of other headphones on the market and anyone seeking an upgrade should consider the M70s
Hey Odi. I really like the production quality of this video. May I ask you please; do you write the script first, or do you make videos first and then add the voice-overs? Thanks.
They sound great, but the pads will wear down and starts to crack, leaving you with black speckles around your ears, so have that in mind that you will need to replace those eventually. The hinges around the cans are plastic and have snapped on the two pairs I've own. Going to try out dt770 next.
I can't believe no one mentioned that these are considered reference/monitor headphones, not consumer listening headphones as this video states, these are by no means hi end audio phile Headphones, they are ment for music mixing, hence the neutral sounding frequency response.
I just received these today with a mind to already process a return. Talk about uncomfortable..... extremely too tight! Sad because I wasn't disappointed with the sound. I quickly switched to my KRK 8400s and Immediately noticed the difference. I think I'm going to get the Pioneers!
Guess its time to replace my old m50's with a pair of the m50x. You guessed it, the cable went bad. After nearly 8 years of use, i cant really complain. Bought a white pair on sale for 50, some of the best 50 bucks i have spent.
Thanks man for the review. It's been so long since you made a video. Anyway to sum things up, I actually tried these headphones before and I didn't exactly like the sound. To be honest, as a producer myself, the headphones lacked the feeling of the bass. Notice I said feeling not hearing and as you stated the highs are very piercing. I'm not too sure but it didn't sound neutral either. All in all, I'm not in favour of them and I'm not being biased. Also if you could make a review of the "Jabra Revos" headphones, that would be great! If not, I completely understand. Great video!
+Jed Official Thank you for the honest input man! You know, I actually agree with you on most of those points. They're definitely not flat but they're more balanced than most mainstream headphones today. Are you sure you listened to the newer M50x model and not the original? I owned the originals and thought they lacked bass, but the M50x have about as much bass as my V Moda M100s (just not as punchy). And yes, those highs can be too piercing sometimes. I'll look into the Jabras, I was curious to see if there was any other headphones you would recommend over the ATH M50x? Once again, thanks for the input! PS. I've been trying to release a brand new vid every week this year. Here's last week's review on the V Moda M100s: ruclips.net/video/SCWxEP_Fv84/видео.html
+ODi Productions Yea I don't quite remember, I think it was this one because my friend lent them to me for some time but they had the detachable cable so I'm assumed they were the newer ones. And to be quite honest, the reason why I requested the Jabras was because I thought they did sound a little better than the M50X. But they have sound enhancers on them so it's not suitable for music production/mixing, or monitoring, etc...I've tried a lot of headphones from Bose, Sony, Sennheisers (cheaper models), etc...and nothing compares to it. It literally looks like something a child would buy because of its colours, size and shape but I'm dead serious it shocked me of how excellent the audio was! It's been quite some time since I accidentally lost them so I have high hopes that they managed to keep that same excellent sound. Just to give you a heads up, they sound a lot like "Bang & Olufsen" headphones, but just a little louder and more punchy bass. If you're still not convinced, I suggest you review something like the "Grado" GS models or "Shure" any model of your choice.
+Jed Official Wow thanks for the info Jed! These Jabras sound very intriguing, I'm going to have to look into that soon. If I get my hands on a pair then I'll be sure to let you know when I review them. And I actually should have a pair of Grado SR80s coming in soon, so be on the lookout for that review as well! Once again, thanks for the headsup :-)
"not the best sounding headphones on the market"...which are then? Ive had these for a couple of years and reallymlike them but feel there's room for improvement. I just tried the Sennheier 660s and was underwhelmed. Any suggestions near that price range? Enjoying your reviews! Thanks
I have very expensive headphones at home and i still love these they are perfect for college. They have a nice bass kick which keeps me awake when I'm doing work great price great sound great portabilty and durability.
I used to work with Sony MDR-V900 that were sounding great. I broke them after about 10 year of using. My wife bought me Beats Mixr for Christmas - since then I basically destroyed my sens of frequency and all mixes I was working on. Today I've purchased ATH-M50x. HONESTLY: those are the best headphones I had over my ears. Should have done it a LOOONG TIME AGO. F____N BEATS! :(
pairing the m50x with a fiio E17k is a godsend. better soundstage, instrument seperation, and smoother highs. The E17k did a great job tightening the bass (the m50x have great bass but sometimes it gets too bassy for badly mastered songs)
+Gilang Wicaksono Thanks for the input!! A decent headphone amp definitely helps to bring out the full potential in a set of cans. I'll have to check out that Fiio one, have you used it with any other headphones as well?
+Gilang Wicaksono Whoah I had no clue the R70x was 470 ohms?! Haha jeez. I have a pair of the M70x I've been testing lately to review soon. Care to share your thoughts on the R70x?
+ODi Productions best open back for under $400. it outputs detailed highs without being too harsh (much better than the Ad700x), very smooth treble and for an open back, it certainly doesn't lack bass. the only downside is it's impedance. Sure, you can get a decent volume out of it with a decent powered DAP (ex. Ibasso dx80), but it won't really shine unless you hook it up to a decent Amp (cypher labs' Trio is a great example). The R70x also scales quite well with your sources and amps.
+Gilang Wicaksono Great input!! Gotta love a decent pair of open-back headphones. I expected no less from Audio Technica. Have you gotten a chance to listen to the M70x as well?
Very good video and I found words to what I was feeling for a while regarding the confort of the original M50. I indeed struggle a bit with it and feel pain! It also presses on the ear lob a lot making them red after a long use! haaaaaa.....but they do sound excellent for the price. GREAT video! thank you.
+Remi Desroques Thank you!! And yeah I definitely hear you on the comfort, it also seems to be pretty hit or miss depending on the size of a person's ears. Have you looked into replacing the earpads?
Hello, really liked the review, one of the most honest reviews. As you mentioned, this is probably not the best sounding headphone out there, but its a good buy in
I would take the V-Moda Crossfade M100s anyday of the week! I really think the M100s are somewhat of a more refined M50x (solid bass response, detailed highs yet not fatiguing at all). You can watch my review here: ruclips.net/video/SCWxEP_Fv84/видео.html
***** THanks a lot, I tried them in one of the local stores. I didn't like their punchy bass. I am looking at more balanced headphones. I liked the ATH M50x, but they lack the bass.. can you suggest anything in
Thanks man! I've got a few people in the comments arguing that the M40x is "better" than the M50x. I don't think either of them is better or worse than the other. The M40x is flatter, more neutral sounding, which means better accuracy but also kinda BORING. The M50x is more hyped in the bass and treble, not as accurate but a more exciting and fun listening experience IMO. Hope that helps, headphones are pretty subjective but maybe this will differentiate them easier.
Read the UPDATED Audio Technica ATH M50x review in 2024: recordingnow.com/blog/audio-technica-ath-m50x-review
@@jdtx1 What about music? I'm looking for a pair of headphones for mainly listening to music.
ODi Productions the problem is you can’t test headphones, most places don’t allow returns for headphones

Nick Smith yes, yes they are. They have the best sound quality I've ever listened to. And for the price, you can't beat it.
+Gabe vander Broek als je nederlands bent, you can buy a beyerdynamic dt 770 pro for 144 euros on bax-shop.nl which sounds waaaaaaaaaaay better
+Nick Smith i just bought it too, you think its worth it?
Same here
+Gabe vander Broek Hehe, yeah! Same here dude.
Here's my mini response review absolutely no one asked for. :D
I've had these headphones since they came out and let me tell you they are some of the best I've ever used.
Well, Sennheisers exist so there's your answer LOL
to clarify I'm talking about the senheiser hd 800s headphones.
I enjoyed your review. I feel like I want to buy them but are hesitating because of the sharpness you are describing. Is this only on very high volumes? What kind of genres do you usually listen too? I'm thinking of Jazz and Classical especially, where this "sharpness" might make me go crazy?
yup. And thats money I absolutely don't have lol
wow I'm so sorry I just saw this reply! I honestly haven't had any trouble as long as what I'm using has an equalizer! And oh boy I listen to just about everything from Kanye West to Fleetwood Mac and back again and quite loudly, too. Honestly of you wanna listen loudly as long as you tweak the eq you should be good. :D
is warmth from the headphones manageable?
I think the dated look is one of the reasons I like the way my m50s and grados look
i don't call it "dated", i'd even prefer the look over beats and the SOUND for sure
I just purchased these last night on Amazon after a lot of research & reviews. I'm definitely looking forward to enjoying these!
Let us know what you think!
ODi Productions my apologies as well for the late reply. Please refer to my answer above to Jose Fabio!

how's the bass? I'm looking to bye a pair
also aren't the M70x better for beat making
I know this comment is a year old but i have the m50x and i listen to a lot of trance. For me they kind of lack in deep bass and have tight bass. I switch to my Sol republics when i want to sacrifice some mids and clarity for some deeper bass unless i listen to vocal trance. Otherwise these headphones are really great.
Hey guys, if you're watching this then I figured you'd be interested in my new M70x review: ruclips.net/video/pUDaNIR5QW8/видео.html
can you please do a review of sony mdr 10rbt please
The bass is much tighter than beats plus the cost.
finally, someone appreciates the m40x instead of blindly listening to all the youtubers
I have the opposite problem where I can feel the M40x clamping onto my head after a while and the M50x feels fine for me.
4:02 Just like my wife!
oh my...
+ODi Productions jk bro I in know way think that's acceptable, but you just set me up so well 😂😂
LOL yeah I thought it was funny. Savage
+ODi Productions lmao thanks

Well maybe because it is not a very populair topic :/
Your headphone reviews are fantastic though!
+Danté Wow that is some high praise!!! Appreciate it Dante, and definitely I had to address the highs cause they do get harsh at times. Still, a great pair of headphones for the price, and I love that bass response.
Thanks for watching as always :-)
+Danté "Z Reviews" almost exclusively reviews headphones/speakers/gear and is brutally honest
Be honest. Do you think this are better than hyperx cloud ii?
+TrollsAnyWay I own both the headphones and the sound quality is definetly much better on the m50x. I always prefer the clouds for gaming as they are more comfortable to wear and have a wider soundstage. Both have excellent build quality and I prefer to use the m50x on the go as they are also portable.
+Danté I don't know what to do. I play video games but I also listen to music. What do you recommend to me?
4:21 I literally cringed in pain when he did this to the headphones lmao
okay heres a fun fact
i bought the audio technica ath-s500 for around Rm290 where i live and i live in malaysia, and i was really happy because i got it for 110 bucks cheaper, and after a few months..... i decided to buy the m50x with cost around 800 to 899 which is pretty reasonable price for high end headphones where i live, and people will actually pay for it.
Then I honestly applaud that salesman.
Greetings from Malaysia btw (JB)
Great review. Ive had the original m50 since 2007 and the headband leather underneath started ripping and falling apart. Was interesting to see how the new gen versions compare.
+Verak03 As a fellow owner of the original M50, I'd say the M50x is a very nice refresh that brings some modern features (mostly the shorter, detachable cable), without really tampering with the sound at all.
@@oDiProductions please don't compare any Audio Technica to vmoda trash ty✌️
Awesome video, Just ordered a pair for myself. Really love your camera, it's very nice with its focusing! Great Job!
+Drex Ego Woo!! I appreciate it. Let me know how you like em :-)
Anyone cringe when he was stress testing the stretch of the headphones?
Stupid kid.
Daniel Crosland I'm 19.
Daniel Crosland Your mother would be proud of you.
I died a lil inside tbh
It killed me a bit yeah, but it's good to see they can withstand it as well
Keep it up on these reviews. You're really blowing it up. Plus your background music is solid.

Great sound for a great price, I said goodbye to my skullcandy aviator and now enjoying my new ATH M 50 X, a recommendation for everybody, listen PINK FLOYDS DARK SIDE OF THE MOON with these headphones it's amazing !!!
Great music recommendation my friend. Rock on
Dang, now I really want them. I love prog rock (I listen to King Crimson on a daily basis)
I stept up from Steelseries Siberia USB illuminated to the m50x and well... they kinda literally changed my life!!!
They changed the way i look at audio products and make me appreciate what i'm hearing.
That's awesome! I think headphones is one of the best investments anyone can make. Everyone loves music, why not hear it in full quality? :-)
Love these fucking headphones and i don't regret selling those shitty beats !!!!!
Haha
They're not as loud as beats and they don't have as much bass, this is because they're really accurate which is great for professionals and audio editing but the beats are better for casual listening imo.
Mbc Worst comment ever !!!!!
I have both the beats solo 2's and the m50x's right now, these are facts.
Mbc I've heard all the beats man and there all shit..... FACTS

@@oDiProductions hey do the headphones leak much?
Finally found an honest review for A-TH M50x! it's a long time over due.. good job with the video👍
+Naveen Dennis Barnabas (Dennis) Much appreciated man!

@@nasserakasheh whys that
I just purchased these headphones as my last pair of headphones were falling apart.
I sold my M50X's.I went to Phillips Fidelio X2's.And now i will go back to M50X again.
Thanks for the input! Taking you weren't satisfied with the Phillips?
Perfect. Your different. Presentation is really nice with the music on the back ground.
Thank you sir
For me personally look wise i actually love them thn the rest
I have the beats studio that I bought 6 years ago for $300. At the time they were the best headphones that I could use for my ipod touch. I tried several other headphones but had to return them du to poor performance. I have since used my beats studio (lately) for just watching and listening to youtube music videos. They require 2 AAA batteries to work. If the batteries are dead then so are the headphones since you cannot listen through them. The right ear cup is starting to tear apart on mine. After 6 years its time to upgrade to the M50X headphones. Bye Bye Beats!
Are these good for mixing even though they're not completely flat?
I wouldn't recommend them personally. A great option would be the beyerdynamic DT770's but only if you have a headphone DAC/amp. Hope this was able to help.
i bought this headphones 2 years ago cuz of this video and i loved them so much...

probably v shaped sounding while claiming to be flat, and recessed midrange, and hot treble, and no soundstage.

+Cqrrot Honestly these are built like a tank! You should have no issues with durability. They're made to withstand some abuse...
Thanks!
Thank you Eric! I hope you enjoy them :-)
ODi Productions Thank you, hope you continue to upload more great videos.
Thanks.
nice honest review and it really helps!. btw what brand is ur headphone stands in the video?. cheers
Awesome video!
I added Brainwavz HM5 pads and after a little equalization, these headphones sound pretty amazing and are MUCH more comfortable (and massive XD)
+Ethan Alba Thanks for the tip man! Gotta check those out :-)
If you replace the padding with brainwavz memory foam it makes a night and day difference. Completely makes the comfort and wearability factor go up by a factor of 10.
As someone who lives in -30 Celsius weather 7 months of the year, these things are better than earmuffs. Seriously, I love wearing these outside.
But they
are 1000x more comfortable, aren't overly boosted, and have non-fatiguing highs. Most of these AT studios aren't comfortable at all for longer sessions, the clamping is
tight and painful after a while.
I got the blue pair. Best headphones I ever owned. They slip a bit easier than the M50s, which I have too. The cups are far more comfortable than anything I used and work great for sleeping.
You got the dark blue and brown colorway?
***** Yes

I listen to audio books, music playlists, hypnosis tracks, etc when I go to sleep. If I'm not 'passing out' tired, I use that to focus my mind and quiet all the chatter.
I wish I’d watched your review before buying M50xBT so that I would not have been ...for lack of a better word... disappointed for first 15mins of using them.
Let me share my experience/review with those interested buyers reading the comments for more opinions:
These are MONITOR headphones so be prepared not to get shocked by the extremely amazing/other worldly sound.
Great review..ATH-M50x are awesome headphones for many reasons and haven't gone back to using in-ears since.
Thanks, and yeah I prefer over-ears instead of in-ears as well
Great review thank you. This'll be a step up from the random ear buds I use now lol.
I disagree with the last opinion, I think personally, as a live sound engineer, the sonic quality is far better than that of other headphones on the market and anyone seeking an upgrade should consider the M70s
had mine for 4 years until I sat on them about a week ago, trying to decide if I should buy them again
These headphones are going to sound so good with my Axon 7. Can't wait for them to come in the mail. The listening experience will be unreal.
I'm curious to see how that setup fares. Let us know your thoughts when you get em
Hey Odi. I really like the production quality of this video. May I ask you please; do you write the script first, or do you make videos first and then add the voice-overs? Thanks.
If your looking at buying some on amazon you can get bundleds with extra stuff for around the same price
I love the retro look of these headphones. Plus, if you want to style them up a bit, you can get a skin for them from Dbrand.
I got some Dbrand skins as well! Thinkin bout doing a video on them
Guess its time to replace my old m50's with a pair of the m50x.
Just bought some manufacturer refurbished with 2 year warranty. I hope it's going to be an upgrade over my Superlux HD668B
Should be a decent upgrade, although those Superluxs are a great value for the money.
"not the best sounding headphones on the market"...which are then?
Ive had these for a couple of years and reallymlike them but feel there's room for improvement. I just tried the Sennheier 660s and was underwhelmed. Any suggestions near that price range?
Enjoying your reviews! Thanks
Good review. I bought a pair recently, and I really like them. Good phones for the price.
I have very expensive headphones at home and i still love these they are perfect for college. They have a nice bass kick which keeps me awake when I'm doing work great price great sound great portabilty and durability.
Very nice, agreed. Love the punch on these.
***** I've tried the R70x but since it's 470ohms I have to hook the E17k to a desktop amp (and use the E17k's Dac)
What would you reccomend for headphones under 150? For noise isolation specifically to block out convos, and outside noise
+ODi Productions replacing earpads Hmmm I'll look into that thanks!
+Remi Desroques I recommend checking out the "Brainwavz Memory Foam Earpads" on Amazon!
Wow I didn't even know it existed! Never really searched for it either :-) Thanks a lot! That could definitely solve A LOT of my problems indeed!
I liked the ATH M50x, but they lack the bass.. can you suggest anything in
2 years with mines and I still can't get enough
Very nice! Do you find them comfortable with the stock earpads?
***** Of course, I still have the stock earpads and I use them 7 hours in the office plus another 5 in home. Really amazing :)
Thinking of picking one of these up. Big fan of audio technica
Hey ODi great video! But one question m40x or m50x will be better?
Thank you very much! Keep up the good work! :)
I'm looking for the most comfortable headphones what would you recommend?
