Bought mine 3 weeks ago... completely satisfied. Only issues... they do need burn-in time.. the bass will change. As for the highs... they're actually a little bit soft, and more forgiving on sibilance. They aren't as "flat" as you'd expect from "studio monitors" though, but they do settle in after the burn-in period.
One thing though... with all the reviews for these cans... why are they all "cosmetic reviews"? Not a single review talking about the 15Hz to 28kHz frequency range, or the low impedance of only 38 Ohms. THAT's what is the most important... not just how comfortable or not they are. ;)

I didn't like that high-end peak on the M50s, I returned 'em, and ended up recently auditioning other ATs and Yamaha monitors, AKGs, and I ended up buying
the M20xs, as I found them to be comfy, had tighter bass response, and the highs and mids were more laid-back and pleasant. Plus they're cheaper, and not as
heavy as the M50s. I think the whole series are fine, but I honestly think they're really better used for professional applications, and not so much for "pleasure"
music listening. I find my Hifimans, and.or Fostex RP40s, and.or Linsoul IEMs are better overall for warm, pleasure listening sessions, all of those have a less clinical,
less flat response, and are just more "fun" headphones and IEMs. But if I were listening to classical music, or mixing and tracking, or doing radio, etc., I would absolutely
choose the ATs first. All of the ATs are well-made and engineered headphones, no doubt. But they were intended for pro. studio applications first, pleasure listening, second.
I noticed Guitar Center was pushing a lot of TASCAM monitors as well: those are even more of a prime example of headphones that ARE NOT intended for fun listening,
intended for pro. monitoring or tracking only, really. I only mention this because, a lot of neophyte audiophiles or people coming into audio for the first time,
do not always get told what to look for, or what the differences are. And they are often vast.
Then you have some headphones that are marketed for both: AKG 701s
for example, can be studio reference cans, or they can be your primary at home fun/critical listening headphones. But the difference can often be a fine line.
A lot of people end up buying stuff like the AT M50xs, and bitching where the hell is the f---n bass? Not understanding they've invested in what are flat-neutral response
headphones. If you want boosted bass, go get VMODAs or Beats. But I notice a lot of the salespeople at some of these retail stores don't always know the difference,
either. Guitar Center pushes mainly studio monitor phones and DJ cans at people, not always what they're really looking for. They don't even sell Beats, Skullcandy or Bose!
It's either mid-fi budget monitors, or high-end studio monitor cans. But honestly, for pro. studio or home recording use, you can't get a much better deal than the upscale end of ATs, or AKGs.
I love the M20Xs I just got, but, I find their inherent sound to be a tad fatiguing for several hours of listening "for fun." If I want pure sublime fun, I put on the Hifiman HE400Is.

Hey Man, thanks for the vid/review. Really well done. Do I see an dac/amp below your Mac? If so which one is it and do you recommend it for use with the M50's? I hear all kinds of answers as to whether or not m50's need a dac/amp? Any input is appreciated. thanks

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  10 лет назад

tlr8611 The M50X works fine with most modern sources. If you notice problems with noise or distortion from your equipment you might want to consider an amp, but I would take all the statements about how much an amp improves sound with a grain of salt.

That's really what these ATs are meant for, tracking and mixing. I wasn't thrilled with the M50X kind of shrill sound, I did though give AT another
chance and bought some M20xs the other day: they have some nice punchy bass, and are not as harsh as the 50s were. Still, honestly, they seem
better as sheer monitor headphones, and for classical music, than for rock, dance or pop music. That's as for pleasure listening, and, they aren't
that comfortable for longer sessions. For mixing and monitoring, they are outstanding. Running them through a good amp. and EQ helps a lot.

Thank you for your review, got my pair recently ! Just FYI for those want are thinking about purchasing : NOT really good for outdoor, put-on-and-go daily use ( a bit too big and chunky, and the design is a bit troublesome for those not used to angle-adjustable earcups ). And the whole thing just has this pastic-ish feel all over it...However, sounds really good.
BUT if you are used to listening bass-heavy headphone (brands with celebrity faces all over), it will take a while for your ear to adjust coz it's though very balance, the bass is a bit (like lachlan said) aggressive, especially for the first few days, not the usual deep and muddle type ( which many may find comfortable or easy to the ears ).

There are slight differences in sound... i tested both.... the m50x has not has recessed mids as the previous one, the treble is now better and more natural and the bass seems to have a tiny bit more impact and tightness.

Got my m50x today. Didn't expect much off it butt was really surprised when i tried them for the first time. The bass is very good, the treble is a little harsh on some songs butt is perfect for most songs that i listen to. Cymbals sound great.

might be a silly question but Is there a headphone that is like the M40x or M50x but comes with a microphone line so you can talk to people on your phone if they call you rather than having to bust out your phone from your pocket every time? I wanted some good all around headphones and the mic line would be a nice addition

Did you see the recent news of an audio technica over-ear being produced?
It's the new ath-msr7, another sound reality product that is similar to the ckr9/10 series! Instead of push and pull phase, this headphone uses a motion driver technology.
It's a 45mm driver with three vents! I cannot wait for this new headphone, it'll be released in November 14!

I got the Dark Green M50x from Amazon for almost a week now! But I just heard of the MSR7 which I think looks absolutely stunning. I'm thinking of returning my M50x to get the MSR7 but I like pretty much everything about the M50x except for the look. Are the sound quality, comfort and durability of the two a lot different? Whats your opinion on this?

The only thing i don't like about these headphones is the proprietary cable connection on the headphones themselves. The cables are detachable but because of the weird connector you can't use any normal 3.5mm cables.

Audio Technica M50x vs Sennheiser momnetums. I couldnt believe something sounded better then the Momentums!!!!! I cannot believe how amazing the Audio Technicas sound in terms of AMAZING detail in the mids and lows and incredible instrument separation. The bass is elevated but controlled which is what I love because I listen to a lot of hip hop. The holy grail of headphones under 200- Audio Technicas.

My only complaint is that I wish it was a standard 3.5mm jack so that I could use any cable I want. I switched to velour earpads because it's always hot in Hawaii. I'm not sure how much it affects the sound quality because my ears aren't really trained for that but the trade off for the comfort is worth it to me.

I would absolutely love if more big tech channels reviewed Brainwavz's line of IEMs and headphones. They are an EXTREMELY underrated brand and outperform almost every brand in price\SQ ratio. For example, the brainwavz m2/m3 perform on par with headphones around 150 dollars, despite being half the price. The HM5 is one of their most highly acclaimed headphones that provide a more neutral and accurate sound than the m50s, for around 120-130 bucks.

We need a wireless variant of these. ATH-M50W? That would be sweet!! I just bought the m50x and they sound really good. Better than my old klipsch Mode m40s that the earcups sort of disintegrated and I couldn't find replacements for the earcups. I am glad I bought these they are so much more comfortable than the klipsch which used a densely packed memory foam material which turned rock hard when it was cold and was very uncomfortable until it warmed up. I think the densely packed foam was the downfall of mode m40s because over time putting them on and taking them off put stress on the seam and eventually it just gives out and rips. I am so glad to see there are replacement parts for these out there too. Earcups, cables etc whereas I couldn't find replacement earcups for the mode m40s and was forced to abandon them for these. The only con I can think of is that athm50x fold in too many different directions and I'm afraid I am going to accidentally break them. Also the cups sometimes swivel a little bit when i have them on my head letting outside noise in but it isn't a big deal.

I just bought the Sennheiser momentums based off your review and I greatly appreciate you answering my questions on these! They will be in the mail tomorrow. Very excited.
However after listening to your review on the Audio Technica I want these as well. However people are soooooo happy and rave about the M50s should I buy the M50s instead of the M50x? I will usually wear these headphones out/travel. Will there be a big difference in sound quality between the M50s and the M50x? I listen to a lot of hip hop, rock, and pop.
The momentums and ( whichever Audio Technica pair you recommend) will be my first 2 pairs of really good headphones.
Ps. I havent seen a review comparing the sennheiser momentums and the Audio technica anywhere on youtube. Can you please review these 2 in the near future!

Should I get these or the Beats pro? I really love my bass but I do think that Beats headphones have a too un-balanced sound signature...What do you think?
    Btw,great video,keep it up!

my ears stick out a bit and are pretty large. Would you say that the earpads are deeper than the beats executive or mdr 1a, or about the same?

  • @uwfei
    @uwfei 10 лет назад +1

You mention that the M50x earpads are made slightly differently to the ones on the standard M50. Well I'm more concerned about the build-quality more than the small differences they might make on the SQ interestingly enough. I own a pair of M50s and the earpads harden very easily and are susceptible to cracking, with my friend also having the same problem. I own cheap superluxes (modding projects) and their stock pleather pads have lasted longer in terms of staying soft and flexible. My ears don't sweat boyond the average person's ears when wearing these types of pads and I do handle mine with care so they don't usually crack, but they still harden and feel rigid to the touch. Going by myself, my friend and some threads on head-fi, this isn't an uncommon occurrence. I have a ATH-ES7 that cost a bit over what the M50 went for at the time of my buying, and five or six years later the ES7 pads are fine to this day. But I still love my M50, despite its potential hidden cost with replacing the pads here and there, and it says a lot that many people who have shifted over to better headphones still keep their M50 in their possesion -- myself included. I appreciate the detachable cable the M50x offers over the older M50, and people wanting to use the M50 as a portable will appreciate it even more, like you mentioned. For me though, I still don't see the M50 or the M50x as a portable and I would rather use my IEM or my ES7 for out-and-about tasks. Been looking forward to this video, knowing that the M50 was the headphone that got you on the headphone journey in the first place, and looking forward to the next. Thanks for another great vid.

I really wish I understood what made earpads crack. I always understood it was sweat. My earpads never crack but then again I have so many headphones that I probably wear each one less than the average user. When you finish wearing your headphones how do you store them?

    • @uwfei
      @uwfei 10 лет назад +1

***** Before purchasing the M50 some time ago, I had heard and read -- as described in my last comment -- about the cracking issue but decided to put my money down anyway, considering other headphones I've owned or own that have pleather/faux leather pads haven't been too bad. Alas I still get the hardening/potential-to-crack problem. I don't use my M50 massively anymore, but they still get a workout a few hours at a time on occasions. Whenever I see some sweat on the pads after use I lightly wipe the sweat away with a dry index finger or a near-frictionless cloth. I live in England so the weather isn't exactly hot and humid most year round, and I store my M50 when not in use out of the light and in a dry place. I mention my old ATH-ES7 because it's relative in the sense that it's also Audio-Technica and it's comparable in price, and the ES7 pads are still the original and are still nice and plush years later. I can only assume that the ES7 pads are real leather or simply a better pleather compound. Also mentioned the superluxs because they're considerably cheaper but their pleather pads stayed plush longer, although they eventually hardened as well but are not cracked, and when I hard-modded those headphones and later soft-modded them with velour pads there wasn't an issue anymore. Ideally I'd like to use velour pads with the M50 as well but what I've tried changes the M50's SQ for the worse. It was one careless moment by me that put the cracks in my M50 pads, although that careless moment might be commonplace for other people who, say, move around with their M50 when shifting to different soundboards or mixers in the studio. But that doesn't change the fact that the pads hardened quickly in the first place and thus were always one move away from cracking. Sorry for another long comment, and thanks a bunch for replying.

I found the m50s to have extremely aggressive bass and treble with a very closed in sound that wasn't very pleasing to me. They didn't sound very flat also, but I also didn't find the hd598 very flat either.

Shall I buy the M50x or the hd558. I will use them for gaming and listening to music. I am leaning more towards the hd558 because they are open back so they will have better surround sound. However the m50x will be better for travel because they are closed back. Which should I pick?

I'm quite nervous about you mentioning about the treble being a little harsh as I've already ordered them. Bought a RHA ma750i (I know it's an in ear earphones and differs from a covered headset) and I switched through all the ear tips but one song ( avicii - addicted to you) had such harsh sounds in the female vocals that is too much for me and I returned them after 3 days because I just couldn't stand them. Afraid that these will be the same.

I tried on the M50x and Shure SRH840 today and I gotta say the moment I put on the M50x I could feel it weighing down on my head and the sound quality isnt as crisp as I thought it would be. I prefer the SRH840 more for its clarity. Despite the hype over the M50x, I thought SRH840 is better though, but then again cos I didn't have much time listening to both headphones I'm not too sure about my judgment, can someone share their thoughts on m50x vs srh840?

Hey so i was wondering how the beats studio wireless stack up to these like i plan on buying either theses two headphones. and i was wondering which one would be more suitable for the type of music i listen too like most of my music taste is mainstreeam pop ,r&b and hip hop. uk like lil wayne, nicki, chris brown, michael jackson, etc. so since beats are formed for that type of music but the m50x are reallly good headphones which would be better?!?!?!?!?!?!? PLEASE HELPPP ahaha

Great review mate. I'm putting together a modest home recording setup & these are the monitoring headphones I've ordered. Looks like I could've done worse for the money. In terms of the flatness/biases in the frequency response, I guess it's a case of learning the quirks of your gear & working around the limitations. Otherwise we'd end up spending way too much $ & time in pursuit of "perfection". It's just good to have access to such decent quality hardware when you're starting out & on a tight budget.

Not sure whether to go for these or the Bose QuietComfort 25's... my computer tends to be pretty loud and I'm going to be flying to Singapore (from UK) to study for 9 months so I feel as if the noise cancellation would come in use but whether it justifies the jump in price is a hard one... I'm not an audiophile at all, I like all kinds of music from classical, old pop, metal, techno ect and I like to have the volume below the damage threshold.

I currently own the Sol Republic deadmau5 special edition track HD headphones. I am looking for a pair of headphones that are portable enough but give me better sound quality than I get with those now. I mostly listen to electronic music. I have heard so much about these. I would not mind spending upwards to $300 on a pair. Would you recommend these, or a different pair? You seem to have a fair amount of knowledge on headphones so I would appreciate your help :D.
