I purchased an M20X a few years ago and I've never had any issues with it other than the occasional snagging of the fixed cable. But otherwise have been very good headphones both for music and gaming.

Hi Lance. I'm Boris and I live in Colombia, South America. Just wanted to say I love your helpful, informative and straight-to-the-point reviews! You're just ahead of the pack when it comes to reviewing cans! Anyway, just wanted to say I got both the M30X & M40X and I'm happy to report they're both phenomenal pairs of cans for the price. Super comfortable & great sounding, though the M40X are just more neutral and have a slight better sound overall. Totally worth the extra bucks!. Congratulations again Lance and please keep those wonderful reviews coming!!
I have to say that out of all the things I've bought, a good pair of m40x's are one of the few things that really boosted my production value. You can hear any distortion in your mix that you'd miss on even krk's, and they have a fantastic bass range. Great pair of headphones.
After years with the m40x I got the m50x. The difference in very low bass is more than a couple db. Its actually quite stark both in sound and especially feel. The larger driver, housing design and sensitivity account for that. Its also louder at the same volume setting. Both sound great, I use them interchangeably for music and video and enjoy both. Hard pressed I'd take the 50x since I don't need the flatter sound.
I purchased the M30X last month based on this review, and I gotta say, what you said in this video about it is spot on. The mids are really detailed, the bass is punchy yet doesn't overwhelm other frequencies at all, the sound stage and separation is decent. I've always preferred and used IEMs before this because of the portability, but right now I'm not even thinking of going back. Audio Technica has done a magnificent job with the M30X for the price. Quick question though, I'm planning to upgrade to M50X next year. In your opinion, is the $100 difference worth it? Does it have more clarity and detail than the M30X aside from the enhanced low frequencies and reduced treble? I'm still curious about why it's priced more than twice as high as the M30X. Looking forward to your new reviews!
I have been using the m20x for a couple years and now I decided I needed an upgrade. The m40x seemed the ideal one for me and I am glad I got it. What a great set of headphones, the sound is just amazing. There's a big difference in sound quality from the m20x. I listen mostly to grunge and classical music and I was blown away. I cannot vouch for other genres, but I'm sure it's also awesome. By the way, I'm not saying the 20s are bad, because they are actually OK. But the 40s are in another league. Thanks for the great review.

I bought a set of M20X. terrific product. I'm especially appreciating the long cable which I plug into my guitar amp which also integrates my phone audio via aux cable. The headphones accommodate both simultaneously with ease. Living in close proximity with housemates I can still get that "cranked to 11" guitar sound without getting murdered from my housemates ( conservative, highly private Chinese...god bless em). Holy cows man, not only you went over every single difference, you just made a buying guide of the series. I was actually surprised you ended with a step-up comparison of all of them, like the rest of the video wasn't enough. In my case I found this video because I wanted to know the difference between the 40 and the 50. I'm kind of a basshead but now that I'll step up to the 100 and plus mark, I kinda want to see the difference when you get quality headphones of the neutral kind (Previous ones were Sony MDR V55 for 50 euros). Just got the M40X today, mainly based on your review videos. They were extremely helpful in my decision making process. And during a quick test against my other two pairs of (older) headphones the sound quality difference is amazing. Thank you very much for the interesting input and keep up the good work. Greetings from Switzerland
***** That's what I call a coincidence! I live in St. Gallen too xD. And when it's not raining - like today - it is a pretty nice place to live. Who knows, maybe we'll bump into each other one day. :)
Got myself the M30Xs , my wife tried them once and she found them very comfy so she uses them daily. I really hope they last although they probably would survive falling off a desk once or twice and being able to fold them also helps. These made me want to buy M50x or M40x some day.
They try to hide all the cons by talking too much about the pros. But you are different, your review is unbiased. I really want to thank you for this video. I ordered ATH M40X today.
First off, your reviews are really thorough, and it's much appreciated. I can't afford decent monitors for recording guitar, so I wanted to know - as a newbie - if the M20X's will make much difference when recording and mastering guitar tracks. I'm mostly doing clean post rock or ambient guitar with effects, straight from the amp to a Focusrite interface & Macbook. Maybe some overdrive/distortion at times. I was aiming for the M30X's if they're worth the difference at an extra $20. What do you think? Should I go for the M20X if I'm new to recording and monitoring the audio?
You really did a great comprehensive review! It was so good I stopped in the middle just to write this. Thanks a lot you just cleared a lot of my doubts:)
Man! I was thinking of M20X for outdoor use like in bus and purchase M50X later on once I had budget, for indoor use. I was totally confused what to do. But now you like forced me to go straight for M50X right away! Great review! :)
Wow - thank you very much. I already bought the M40X before watching the video and I am very excited to receive them within the next days! Keep on making such great reviews!
hey +Lance Gross ,,i have money for m50x but i am just casual home useper day ....and i am not used to high end handphone ...i am actually earphone user ..my first big headphone plz reply should i go for m20x or the m50x
The AT phones are really fine gear. I’ve had my M50X for 9 months, and I’m happy. I’ve had several headphones over the years, and one of the big things that matter in the long run: Detachable Cables. The cable is usually the first place where a connection gets wonky or breaks. to have the option of switching out the cable will be worth the time and money in the long run. Detachable cable connection is a must, I swear. You’ll thank me later.
I am really confused with m30x and m40x. this is the first time i will be spending money on high quality headphones. The problem is i am afraid if i buy m30x and the cable breaks my whole money will go to waste. While i can change the cable in m40x. Are m30x can take a beating? i am a rough user i sometime throw the headphones on couch or in bed. And by the way i love your videos.
Yes, my M30x's wires gets caught in my chair a lot of times and I'm not too careful with them overall. They are still sounding as good as they were on the first day I got them.
@@emmanuelbatista5041 for 5 years O.o mine 30s something happen after less than 2 years, then i bring to salon they fixed and now after 7-8 month again right one is in silence :( i use them everyday outside and at home
i have the m30x and cable indeed is a little problem. BUT, dont consider giving 50 or 100 more bucks just because of the cable. Im sure that you can change the broken cable, its a very easy job.
They're the best monitor headphones because they have a flat frequency response. Even better than the m50x because the m50x cuts treble and boosts the bass like on beats.
I was looking for a comparison of this series, especially between the M40x and the M50x, and found yours perfect! Got the information I was looking for. Thanks! :)
+AzureSymbiote i have the m40x for playing recording and editing guitar and they are really nice and i got them for $87. m50x are around $160 dollars and the difference between the 2 isnt worth 73 dollars. if the m50x was around 100-110 dollars id go with them but even then its mostly for the extra cable and i have a bigger head and m50x are slightly bigger. the sound difference isnt that big.
I just purchased the 50x headset and I am so impressed! The sound quality is Outstanding! The ear cups are so soft and comfortable you can wear these all day! The best cans I have ever owned!
You can plug it in into a DAC and crank up the low end with an equalizer. Great for some rock and jazz, but not punchy enough for EDM. Still not enough bass? Get Sony MDR-XB950BT instead.
Seeing how every model sounds apparently great my question is this: Can you fully take advantage of all these models with normal audio streaming apps such as Spotify (at highest quality stream of course)? Or given that situation, should I just settle for the lesser models of this M-Series?
I wish all product reviews are done the way this guy is doing it. This is awesome! Answered everything I wanted to know about these headphones. Thanks for this great review
It's been just over a year that I've bought this limited edition blue headphones. Only I have used these and that too ultra delicately. I can't afford one anytime soon. I need to know if someone shares the same problem I've experienced with these. My problem isn't with the audio drivers. It's with the pleather (leather like material but not leather) parts on the headphone. The brown pleather parts found on the headphone gradually forms crease lines, cracks & finally peels off in small bits. I guess it's just a matter of time for all of it to powder away. At first it was seen on the right ear pad, then on the inner part of the headband. The headband part get's worse. Links to Images. Guys beware because I emailed the company and have found no response whatsoever. AT's associate in India have promised me ear pad replacements. But they say they can't do anything about the headbands and that I should glue it. And just how does that work?!!! Now I wonder, Is this why I bought the limited edition for? If anyone can help, it will be on time and I'd truly appreciate it. postimg.org/image/rty6ys06r/ postimg.org/image/f8xrp5tc7/ postimg.org/image/ths5hye1l/ In short I'm disappointed! :"(
This is by far the best headphone review I have seen, literally made me make my choice in a moment - you are a life saver brother.....great video good job
If you want flatter sound signature i'm pretty sure the m40x does that the best. Go watch Z review's review on them. You'll also be saving a decent amount of money
Wow! your reviews are just what I want to know about the Audio Technica ATH M series, objective and informative. I am glad that I already ordered the M40X rather than the M50X even before I listened to your reviews. What I need is just the nice and natural sound rather than extra bass from the headphone set. Now I’m clearer about what I’m getting after watching your reviews. Thanks a lot!
wow... watched this video and went immediately subscribe. I expected 500k-3m subs...you must be new, but you really have talent and skill with this. Thanks for the videos :D (I expect your channel to explode with subs within months, you certainly deserve it!)
I'd say probably not the m50 or m30's. haven't heard the other ones. I love those headphones, but for metal specifically I'd personally want something more mid range-y.
I had and recently lost the M20x. I think it is genuinely the single best pair of headphones you can buy for 50$. I know a lot of audiophiles knock it and say the m40x is the absolute best, but i really want to know what tf they're talking about because the m20x is still great for listening to music or mastering, you can pick out so many subtle details that even get muddy on 100$+ sennheiser or 300$+ bose. Yeah the plasticky build quality is not amazing, but the cups actually feel comfortable and the cord is basically never gonna fray, its super tough. Too long, actually, but i get that it was meant for studios where you could basically roll your chair to the other end of the studio and still have room. I am watching this video because i lost my headphones and i am thinking of upgrading
1. M40x has flat sound, but m50x has boost in low and high frequensis, wich is not good for mixing and making music. 2. M40x cost 110 euros but m50x cost 170 euros (Finland prices) So if ur going to buy headphones for mixing and making music m40x is defenitely better for that. But if ur just average music listener m50x is better option, because it has bass boost and liittle bit better sound quality.
I compared the M40X to AKG, BEYER DYNAMICs, SENNHEISER (with there mids and echo voicals) and I can tell you the M40x is the perfect headphones for those that want to hear the music how it's meant to be.. FLAT RESPONSE.. it does not increase any of the frequencies... the m40x is now my favorite headphones.... (I was a fan on SONY v600 v900 and have had sony's for 14 years now) but those will be set aside for the m40x
I totally agree with you man. As a heavy metal listener, i'm having problems with the bassy sound of my Sol Republic Tracks Air(bluetooth), that was developed for those who like the "bring the bass" scene, just like the crappy Beats headphones. So, between the M50x and M40x, i'm almost buying the M40x and it's even cheaper.
WTF the frequency response in the m40x IS NOT FLAT, the m20x and the m50x has almost the exact frequency response, the m30x and m40x are coloured headphones!! that's why they sound good for metal.. when you hear metal in the m20x you will notice the sound is really flat which is great for making music just like the m50x.... and finally you can't compare to other brands if your not telling me the exact model you tried, my beyerdynamics are beast if you compare them to the m40x.. Greetings from chile.
Hey, GREAT video! It answered almost all of my questions and was really nice to watch! Your channel has the best headphone reviews I've seen! There is still one thing I'd like to ask, though: does the difference in impedance between the models have a considerable impact on sound quality for PC or mobile use? More specifically, does the M40X sound noticeably better on those platforms than the M50X? Thanks and keep up the good work!
This video helped out a lot! Was gonna go with the M30X's but this definitely sold me on the M40X's. This is a super professional, informal, and entertaining video! Excited for my headphones to arrive :D
I bought my M40x's based off of this review. I use them for everything! They are with me every single day in school and I have given them the title of "Beats Killers" as all people in my school think Beats are top of the line. When they put my M40's on their mind is blown. They are amazing headphones.
The M40x is much much smaller cup than the 50x or the 30x. It feels like I am shoehorning in my ears in a hole. I stayed with the 30x because they feel softer and lighter on my head and my ears fit.
Hello there! M70x came out and I hope you get your hands on them and tell us what you think of it compared to M40x since you mentioned in this video that M40x is more flatter than M50x. Got my HD 598 btw, couldn't be more happier. Thanks for the review of it.
Excellent comparison. I been using a m30 since 2011 and I have been debating between the m40x and m50x. After watching your comparison I am rethinking my decision to get an m50x and getting an m40x. Thanks.
why is every1 praising the m40x? its sounds great, cant say anything bout that. However its super uncomfortable.... the top is pressing hard on your head, giving the top pad isnt soft at all. That combined by the squeeze on your head from the cuffs.... AND then there is the problem with the 3.5mm jacks. Using a computer they work fine but if u wanna use em with ur phone and move around its hopless cuz the jack is sooo loose.
well wtf are u talking bout? So ur saying just cuz they are audio grade i shouldnt be able to use them as regular headphones on the go? Thats pretty bad imo

Oh hi Garrett
This review is incredible.
Coming from Senhiser HD 202-II, planning for 30X or 40X which one to go for ?
M30x all thway but ur saving mor money on m20x but there is a little difference with them
Go for m50x
I loved this review it explained every single thing. I was really confused between M20x and M30x, you solved my confusion. Subscribed. Thanks a lot. Great review. 👍
Just got the M40X today, mainly based on your review videos. They were extremely helpful in my decision making process.
And during a quick test against my other two pairs of (older) headphones the sound quality difference is amazing. Thank you very much for the interesting input and keep up the good work.

That's what I call a coincidence! I live in St. Gallen too xD. And when it's not raining - like today - it is a pretty nice place to live.
Who knows, maybe we'll bump into each other one day. :)
Will do. xD
"Sound quality is also worth mentioning". Lol. Like it doesn't matter that much ?..
lol good meme
Nah mate, it's all about that weight. The way it floats in your head is everything
😜
Just ordered the ATH-M40x...and wanted to thank you for helping me make my decision...keep up the good reviews!
Wow, extremely concise/informative way to compare all of these, got just the info I needed. Thanks so much!
One of the greatest review videos I've seen on RUclips. Great job man!
Why are there dislikes on this video? There is nothing bad with it.
***** I just got them a few days ago. Please buy them. You won't regret any dollar. One word to describe them? "Fenomenal".
Danté "Phenomenal"
JustYourAverageJoe Yep, English is not my first language but thanks anyway.
DeadZombie then dont talk or listen for your whole life lol.
Dante Nero Lol indeed! Hahaha!
Got myself the M30Xs , my wife tried them once and she found them very comfy so she uses them daily. I really hope they last although they probably would survive falling off a desk once or twice and being able to fold them also helps. These made me want to buy M50x or M40x some day.
This is one of the most honest reviews i ever watched.
Man thanks a lot! I do my best to tell it how it is. Is there something particularly dishonest you've noticed about other reviewers?
They try to hide all the cons by talking too much about the pros. But you are different, your review is unbiased. I really want to thank you for this video. I ordered ATH M40X today.
Thanks a ton, this helped me so much in deciding what to get. I went for the M40x and now I'm just waiting for them to be shipped here!
thanks men!! interested in m40x
Very useful review. It confirmed that I want the M40X for recording and mixing use. Thanks.
M40x are the best
SapiaNt0mata I can agree but I use my 30x for everyday uses (for easy of use I have Cowin SE7 because Apple removed there headphone jack)
Great review! Simplified a lot of stuff. I'm waiting for my 40s to arrive. Can't wait to try them on!
You and ***** have the best reviews out there
***** I like you better than marques brownlee. you're more natural and sincere
I'm also a big fan of MKBHD, but i must say that this review is better than MKBHD's.
0 0 lol yes
Man! I was thinking of M20X for outdoor use like in bus and purchase M50X later on once I had budget, for indoor use. I was totally confused what to do. But now you like forced me to go straight for M50X right away! Great review! :)
This m series is amazing- I have the m20x headphones and they're honestly amazing for under 50 bucks.
Wow - thank you very much. I already bought the M40X before watching the video and I am very excited to receive them within the next days! Keep on making such great reviews!
hey +Lance Gross ,,i have money for m50x but i am just casual home useper day ....and i am not used to high end handphone ...i am actually earphone user ..my first big headphone plz reply should i go for m20x or the m50x
mitesh vachhani M20 should be enough i think 😂 Damn a reply after 2 years 🤓
haha i bought m20 around 1.5 year ago i am satisfied with quality
Nice! hahah :D
I had the 30s for five years and they just broke and they’ve taken the beating. Just upgraded to the 50s and I can say there’s no going back
@@emmanuelbatista5041 for 5 years O.o mine 30s something happen after less than 2 years, then i bring to salon they fixed and now after 7-8 month again right one is in silence :( i use them everyday outside and at home
i have the m30x and cable indeed is a little problem. BUT, dont consider giving 50 or 100 more bucks just because of the cable. Im sure that you can change the broken cable, its a very easy job.
And here we are, after 6 years we still visiting this!
God bless you man your review was a great help
Really appreciate the great feedback and comment, thank you! :D
Why aren’t you uploading dude?

One of the best reviews and comparisons I have ever watched on RUclips! Great job!
Hey, I really appreciate your videos. Great reviews! Keep up the good work!
is m20x gud for mixing
I have the M40x and they're phenominal
+EKB1 Too bad it's been misspelt;)
They're the best monitor headphones because they have a flat frequency response. Even better than the m50x because the m50x cuts treble and boosts the bass like on beats.
+Xero
Use an EQ, sounds so clear.

phenomenal*
I was looking for a comparison of this series, especially between the M40x and the M50x, and found yours perfect! Got the information I was looking for. Thanks! :)
Thank you very much. I was wondering which one between 40x and 50x for a starting composer and mixer. 40x it is then.
I ordered m40x for 9500 rupees that is equals to $135. That's how it is in India.
You guys are lucky. ✌🏻
@@ashishplaysguitar7235 I got it for six thousand something some years ago.
@@AzureSymbiote They have increased the price. 🤘🏼
I just purchased the 50x headset and I am so impressed!
The sound quality is Outstanding!
The ear cups are so soft and comfortable you can wear these all day!
The best cans I have ever owned!
I HAVE A QUESTION!!: Does the m20x have a strong bass???
using the m20x for almost two months now, gotta say you'll just sink into the beauty of the sound made by them..bass is punchy...just the right amount
You can plug it in into a DAC and crank up the low end with an equalizer. Great for some rock and jazz, but not punchy enough for EDM. Still not enough bass? Get Sony MDR-XB950BT instead.
I really appreciate that I can hover over the scrollbar and see all the different sections in the thumbnail, because of your graphics.
It’s 30’s or 40’s for me 💯
I tried both 30 and 40 at the music store... Ended up buying the 30,seemed more comfy to and with more bass presence. Thanks
Seeing how every model sounds apparently great my question is this: Can you fully take advantage of all these models with normal audio streaming apps such as Spotify (at highest quality stream of course)? Or given that situation, should I just settle for the lesser models of this M-Series?
yeah you should settle for a lower model
Thanks for your review. It helped deciding between M30X, M40X. Bought the M40X and loving it!
Excellent review, helped me make my mind up. Invest in a decent mic, that is the only thing I would advise, thanks again.
Really appreciate the great feedback, thank you! :D

This is by far the best headphone review I have seen, literally made me make my choice in a moment - you are a life saver brother.....great video good job
Should I get the m50x or m70x for studio monitoring edm genres such as house and dubstep?
m50x
hatim abdelmounim Why? I though the m70x has a flatter signature, which is better for studio monitoring.
If you want flatter sound signature i'm pretty sure the m40x does that the best. Go watch Z review's review on them. You'll also be saving a decent amount of money
Definitely the m40x is the way to go.
STARSHIP OLYMPUS Why? I don't care about the price though, i only care about the sound and that flatter signature and clear highs on the m70x.
Wow! your reviews are just what I want to know about the Audio Technica ATH M series, objective and informative.
I am glad that I already ordered the M40X rather than the M50X even before I listened to your reviews. What I need is just the nice and natural sound rather than extra bass from the headphone set. Now I’m clearer about what I’m getting after watching your reviews. Thanks a lot!
Great review! Thank you.
Thanks, glad you liked it!
this helped me a lot I just bought a pair of m30x's today, can't wait to get them from Amazon.
Thanks man!
wow... watched this video and went immediately subscribe. I expected 500k-3m subs...you must be new, but you really have talent and skill with this. Thanks for the videos :D (I expect your channel to explode with subs within months, you certainly deserve it!)
This video is just what I needed thanks :)
The M40X is pretty amazing. I will definitely recommend it.
Which one is the best for metal?
M40X
+ㅤㅤ the invisible man
+Superglue up in here damn right
bust buy the one that fits in your budget and get an eq program
This is crazily helpful
dude, great job with these reviews. i'm thinking of buying an m30x 'cause it's the most my budget would allow. you gained a sub.
Which is the best for gaming?
m50x i think, the bass boost improves the gaming experience
better to get the m20x. since for gaming a slight bass boost is great plus its the cheapest
Best comprehensive review and easy to understand. Great Job dude!
Which one is better M40x or M50x I can buy either.
+Tech Central M50X I'd say :)
If ur going to make music m40x would prob be better.
KalleHullu Why? They're just a little worse...
1. M40x has flat sound, but m50x has boost in low and high frequensis, wich is not good for mixing and making music.
2. M40x cost 110 euros but m50x cost 170 euros (Finland prices)
So if ur going to buy headphones for mixing and making music m40x is defenitely better for that.
But if ur just average music listener m50x is better option, because it has bass boost and liittle bit better sound quality.
KalleHullu Thanks for the explenation, I'm not the biggest expert in headphones, I just know M50x's are great headphones :)
Thank you so much for producing this video, I was planning to change M20x to M40x
@@pablom2274 from all reviews, you're the first to say these things
Best Comparison review out there...
Finally helped me to go with the M40x over the M30x..
Great Vid Man
The Impedance of the M40X is 35 ohms (not 25 ohms)
Hey, GREAT video! It answered almost all of my questions and was really nice to watch! Your channel has the best headphone reviews I've seen!
There is still one thing I'd like to ask, though: does the difference in impedance between the models have a considerable impact on sound quality for PC or mobile use? More specifically, does the M40X sound noticeably better on those platforms than the M50X?
Thanks and keep up the good work!
This video helped out a lot! Was gonna go with the M30X's but this definitely sold me on the M40X's. This is a super professional, informal, and entertaining video! Excited for my headphones to arrive :D
why don't you review the m70x
I bought my M40x's based off of this review. I use them for everything! They are with me every single day in school and I have given them the title of "Beats Killers" as all people in my school think Beats are top of the line. When they put my M40's on their mind is blown. They are amazing headphones.
The M40x is much much smaller cup than the 50x or the 30x. It feels like I am shoehorning in my ears in a hole.
I stayed with the 30x because they feel softer and lighter on my head and my ears fit.
Aquifer Arts I know it’s a year later, but thanks for the comment. This is what I needed to know.
Just so people know, you can upgrade the pads to something much better (recommended for most headphones). I have 40x and use the cowhide pads by ZMF
Hello there! M70x came out and I hope you get your hands on them and tell us what you think of it compared to M40x since you mentioned in this video that M40x is more flatter than M50x.
Got my HD 598 btw, couldn't be more happier. Thanks for the review of it.
M70 is best for studio monitoring purpose
Subscribed.
***** No problem.
6 years after being published, this review helped me choose which headphone to buy. Thank you and congratulations!
did you bought one of these? are they worth it?
M40x the best by far (in my opinion) more balanced, clean and yet smooth sound than the M50X.......
@Matt I'm thinking of changing the M30x for the m40x for the sound, do you think it's worth it
Excellent comparison. I been using a m30 since 2011 and I have been debating between the m40x and m50x. After watching your comparison I am rethinking my decision to get an m50x and getting an m40x. Thanks.
should i get the 20x, 30x, or 40x for gaming and pop music?
+andyb6200 Get the cheapest ones. Pop and gaming ain't worth anything better than the 20xs;)
The m50x are what i have, coupled with an amp and usb mic theyre great for gaming
for gaming either the m30 or the m20 I suggest m30x
Excellent review and really helped me decide to go with the M40x, keep the reviews coming!
why is every1 praising the m40x? its sounds great, cant say anything bout that.
Get some hm5 angled pads boom comfort fixed and when I had the m40x connection was never an issue
well wtf are u talking bout? So ur saying just cuz they are audio grade i shouldnt be able to use them as regular headphones on the go? Thats pretty bad imo
