Been using M50x for more than 2 years now but recently replaced my faulty audio interface to a new one with 80 ohm source impedance and now thinking of going for DT 770 Pro 80 ohm too.
I have watched at least a dozen other comparison videos between these two cans and you are the first to mention anything about comfort for eyeglass wearers like myself, Thank you for helping me decide I will be going with the 770s and also gave you a subscribe
I used the ATH-M50x's for over 3 years now, one of the best headphones I've ever had. The only 2 problems I had was the ear cushions and headband are made of a material that will flake off and peel relatively easily, and that they tend to become uncomfortable after long sessions. I'm only replacing them because a plastic piece broke off and they no longer sit on my ear correctly. While I would still recommend them, I am going to give the dt770's a try.
It's incredible how similar of a situation I am in to you! Was the piece that broke off the little tiny bit that sits slightly above the earcup, allowing the earcup to "clamp" onto your head?
@@zamzamz8233 YES! It's like a little tiny plastic notch and now it doesn't cup my head at all. I thought about gluing something there since I didn't wanna buy new headphones because of a little piece. However, I picked up a pair of dt 770's and have been enjoying them so far
A couple of comments on the BDs. They come in three different input impedances, 32, 80, and 250 ohms. The 250 and 80 are best used with an audio interface or other high-power output and may not be suitable direct from a smartphone or computer. Also, the velour earpieces only come on the 250 and 80. The 32 only comes with vinyl earpieces although you can replace them with aftermarket velour.
This video was great, I'd narrowed it down to these 2 pairs of headphones after at least 2 weeks of research and review reading/watching and was pretty much set on the Beyerdynamics. I especially appreciate the point you'd made about the glasses as I honestly hadn't even considered that to be a factor. Most of the headphones I've used in the past were for gaming and so were typically made to accommodate even the fattest of heads so I had just assumed that comfort with glasses was a given, especially at the price range. This has really only confirmed that I want the Beyerdynamics, however it is unfortunate that they don't seem to be the most comfortable "wearing around" headphones. I was hoping they wouldn't be too annoying when wearing them around my neck, although you brought up a good point about the lack of swivel. Regardless I do want them as everything I've seen leads me to believe they have the superior sound, and I want something that will work some magic when I plug it into my new DAC. Hopefully I'll get used to wearing them around my neck, or maybe find a way to mod them and increase the swivel. Thank you for making this easy to understand and concise video. Earned a sub, and I wish you all the best in these trying times and in the future.
Good advice Andrew. For me over the years it's been m50x all day long as a VO Pro. I wear reading glasses and wear them for hours no problem, no headaches. Just bought the Austrian Audio Hi-X55 and already regretting it (buyers remorse)...They are def comfortable, but don't live up to the hype for booth work anyway and even music didn't sound great though the AA's. Still wearing them in, but...
Dude how don't you have more subs. You're killing it and the video is so crisp and detailed and just gets straight to the point. When you spoke about the glasses, I had a little tear. No one address that issue usually. I normally don't sub to channels but come on. You deserve wayyyy more. So here's a like and sub. Love the videos. Keep grinding and stay consistent and you'll make it. All the best
The youtube algorithm doesn't car about quality. They promote channels that upload often and have high viewer interaction. High quality videos don't get yhe hype they deserve.
I found myself in this situation of comparison. The video really helped me understand and compare these two models. I am not yet sure of my choice but the Audio-Technica ATH-M50X seems to me better suited to my situation for practical reasons even if the flat sound aspect attracted me at the start of my research. Thank you
Glad the video helped, Christian! If you are attracted by the idea of a flat sound, you can also look towards the ATH-M40. They are often regarded as a slightly cheaper and flatter M50, but otherwise share many features. They could be a good choice for you, as well. Good luck!
@@odysseyofcuriosity Thank you for the follow-up and thanks for this new information. My goal is to come out with a pretty good mix directly from my MPC ONE with a pair of headphone. For now I'm using my old SONY MDR-7505 and I can't export something without remixing it with my studio monitors. I'm doing HipHop and Lofi beats... so do you these ATH-M40 or 50 will be better than my SONY?
Glad I can help! I've never heard the MDR-7505, but if they are anything like the 7506 (which are pretty much a standard in many professional audio settings) they are very decent headphones, so I don't think replacing them with the M40 will solve your mixing issues. In fact, I just uploaded the first part of a series I'll do on mixing on headphones. You might want to check it out, as in this first video I talk about the shortcomings of using headphones vs monitors - maybe that's the source of your issues?
I have both and the DT770 are way more comfortable and less fatiguing while gaming. I have to turn the volume down as they strain my ears more with the M50X. I usually game with SHP9500 as I can wear those all day. Just bought the DT770 Pro 80ohm for $30 and they feel similar in comfort to the SHP9500. My ears don't hurt like the M50X or M40X while gaming. It's not the pad comfort but the highs are simply too bright and start to hurt my ears and turn them down.
I've got the DT770 Pro 80ohm, running them for about a week now and I've been more than happy with the quality of sound and the headphones themselves! The 3m cable is... Its certainly something. I've kept it bundled up as it came out of the box, and I've just started wearing around a bumbag to put both my phone and the cable in 🤣 most likely a portable amp as well when I get one. But as someone who's come from using £30 KitSounds for the last 7 years... I'm overjoyed regardless
They definitely make you work if you want to take them with you on the road, but the sound quality and comfort are worth it. I also carry my DT770 in my backpack daily, and it's not that bad (yet I have the coiled, shorter cable with the 250 ohm version). If you don't really need the extra length, making it shorter and soldering a jack isn't very complicated, so look into that for the future. Anyway, enjoy your headphones!
@@odysseyofcuriosity thank you! I'm not bothered about the cable and I'm not going to modify it because they're under 3 year warranty. Once that runs out I'll probably just modify them to be mini-XLR and removable cable too
As a pure listener I prefer the AT’s. (I listen to an eclectic mix of Tool, Billy Eilish and Piazzolla.) I wear wireframe glasses and have no problems with the comfort. I do find the AT’s a tad warm on my ears, but the overall difference in the sound (more ‘warm’ than ‘flat’, more ‘alive’ than ‘technical’) makes it worth it to me. The soundscape is less ‘wide’ but to me expansive enough, it’s not like the music is from a tiny box like with classic British loudspeakers. So I’m happy.
That's the most important thing. We can talk all day about tiny differences in specs, but the idea is to get what you actually enjoy - what's on paper doesn't matter. Glad you really like your m50x Matthijs, hope you get to enjoy them for many years to come!
Fuck man, I wish I would have found this comment before I bought my dt770s. It’s not that I don’t absolutely fucking adore them, but like 50 percent of my playlists are made up of mostly tool’s and a perfect circle’s music. Wish I could’ve tried the AT’s.
glad i found your review early. I am going to buy the beyerdynamic after this. I have experienced the m40x which has served me well for 7 years now but the earpads are dead to say the least, they wear off fast if you sweat and use for long hours. I want to experience the beyerdynamic but was worried about comfort since i wear glasses. Thank you for mentioning these points Bro you are the best.
I went with the dt770. The audio-technica are a great sounding headphone but the quality of the build seems to be lacking. I had 3 pairs over 5 years and they all broke where the speaker cup joins the headband. Not even abusive use or floor drops. I had a pair just break while I was wearing them.
Buy both. I purchased both units, and both have a place in my studio in many applications (Both Are excellent a must-have!). This is the same as saying which one is best, PC or Mac, Um Both are necessary!
"They don't have a removal cable." And that's gonna be a pass. If that cable breaks (on the base of the jack like EVERY FUCKING HEADPHONE CABLE DOES EVENTUALLY) that's a dead 150$ pair of headphones. 100 points to the audio Technicas.
everyone saying if you want to plug into phone or laptop for music listening go for 32 ohms but my question is ..is 32 ohm version good for MUSIC PRODUCTION?
My original model ATH-M50s were the most comfortable headphones I ever used. I wear glasses and have a large head and they were more than big enough for me.
I have ATHM50. From before M50X. Have them 12yrs and still working great but the earpads and headband are falling apart and disgusting. The M50 had a high end peak that can be harsh at times. was this removed for the M50X? Surprised to hear M50x is smoother. I see the M50x has some nice features such as detachable headphones etc but my M50 doesn't even have that so would not be missing much without it. Sound quality would be priority. That said, is there another pair of headphones for maybe 50$ more that blows both out of the water?
Decent review but for gaming my choice would defiantely be the M50s... although you have a fair point to make for the DT770 Pro (bit better positional clarity) the positional audio on the M50 is better than on many "Surround Gamer Headsets" while still delivering booming explosions. I have tried the DT 770 Pro in both 80 and 250 Ohm. Recommended them a few times to happy recipients who prefer listening to music like Jazz or Classical Music. Also tried a few Sennheisers, Sonys, Koss, Bose and Bower Wilkins Headphones just to mention a few that are either a popular choice or really good on their own. Notable mention... the Koss Porta Pros always amaze me as a compact on Ear Headphone. But back to those two legendary Headphones ... i just bought my third pair of M50s ... my second one beeing the BT2 Variant ...which truly sounds like it is indeed wired... if you use LDAC 960kbps. My original pair of M50s was now 14 years old and i have used it at least a few hours every day... at home, on the go ... just always. Why did i replace them for a new pair of M50 (in the M50x Gunmetal variant :))? Because they sound so much more fun... they work for films, also Jazz and Classical Music ... although the sound stage is not nearly as wide as on the DT 770 Pros or the DT990 for that matter and the clarity is also not as defined. But exactly this clarity is for my preferred types of music too much, too airy,... i love that DnB, Techno, Rap and Trap or any type of EDM sounds like you are in the club. Huge Speaker style bass, nothing distorted, nice but tight soundstage that can become quite a bit wider with the proper recording. This btw. also makes them quite useable for fast FPS Shooter Games... positional audio is still decent while explosions sound like real explosions. Airier Headphones or the good sounding but very fragile Steelseries Headsets do not reproduce mids and especially low frequencies quite as punchy but still not overexposed like the M50 do. Back to my final Audio verdict as i drifted over to why i also like to use them for really everything else. I like my audio clean, neutral and undistorted but still dirty, so when the fat baseline hits, it really hits you. So i have the peace in mind that i do not care if i listen to Simon & Garfunkel, Lil John, A$AP Rocky, The Prodigy, John Spencer Blues Explosion, ELO, Justice, Die Antwoord, Dj Shadow, Slipknot, Trampsta, Massive Attack, Dj Fresh, Autechre, Chicago, Schoolboy Q and whatnot... it all just sounds so right. Not only clean but also fun. Mind you the DT 770s will manage to play quite a few of these Artists just fine too,... but take the song Bassline Junkie from Dizzee Rascal ... the bass will not "be buzzin" on the DT 770 Pros ... so that is definately a song that sounds just weird on the DT-770 Pro. John Spencer also sounds in general nicer on the M50s although the DT770 also do a good job but they do create a different experience for the listener. So if you want a "always on" wide soundstage with pristine separation (perfect to dissect every single instrument track) and brilliant treble ... go get the DT 770 Pro´s ... they do feel more comfortable and a bit more premium. But i just cannot quit the M50s ... they sound so much more fun to me and when i need some bangers instead of the 4th coffee... the DT 770 just do not cut it. Comfort was a problem in the end with my 14 year old ones ... but both new ones feel really nice. At the very first day i should have given the Headband a little strech as the fit will hurt after a few hours if you have a rather big head like me. Now a few days in and everything is fine. Quite curious ... the Earpads from the BT2DS Variant are quite noticeable softer and feel really nice throughout a 10 hours office day (Mic is really really good for Teams and i can dual pair my phone and notebook with seamless handshake between them). Still the M50 Earpads will be comfortable enough, even for longer sessions as long as they are fresh, be sure to replace them as soon as you feel the inner cup putting pressure on your ears. There are also quite a few high quality after market earcups available for the M50s ... but that sounds like a research of its own which i have been too lazy to do yet.
I've seen so many broken hinges in Audio technica ath40x and 50x that i wonder if that's by design. I've been using 40x for several years and i love the sound, especially when i replaced earpads with custom ones. Build quality isn't very good in my opinion. Not to mention that you can't buy genuine audio technica headband / hinge.
I have m50 , it was my first headphones.. using maybe 9y even cant remember... Now ordered 700pro X and my question if its really worth... Im afraid of muddy sounds...Can someone suggest alternatives? I have time to cancel order.
Beyerdynamic headphones (the DT700 Pro X included) are the opposite of "muddy" - some people complain of how bright they are. So I think there's no reason to worry - you will enjoy them a lot. Good luck!
@@odysseyofcuriosity Sorry to say this.. But DT700 failed. Today received and registered refund.. Headphones with no detail. I can't even call such headphones "for monitoring".. Very sad lol So my last chance DT770..
@@pastuh i can see that on SoundID ..... the frequency response of the old dt770 is more flat in the mids than dt700 PRO. the dt900 PRO is a little better i can see.
No. Unless your laptop is entry level and has a very weak headphone output, it should be able to drive the DT770 80 ohm just fine. A separate audio interface could have better D/A converters which could increase the sound quality (by how much, again, depends on the quality of the soundcard used in your laptop) - but I wouldn't get one from the beginning.
i will definitely suggest m50x to anyone who doesn't edit vids or music , removable cable and flexibility is more important than u think, they are easy to use easy to carry nd of course who doesn't like a bit more bass with crystal clear instruments
i got a dt990 250ohm coming through which im hooking up to the soundblasterx G6, but i'm also thinking of ordering a pair of dt770 due to being able to have a closed and open back headphones. just not sure whether to get 80ohm or 250ohm given i have an amp that apparently can output more then enough power
Thanks, glad you liked it. The point of the video was to compare the two in the title and help people make a choice between them, not complicate their life even more by adding a third option lol. I'll for sure make a video about the DT 990 in the near future, but for now I don't think I agree with them being a better choice for someone looking for the two in the title, since comparing them doesn't compare apples to apples. Both are closed, the DT 990s are open-back. With them, what you gain in soundstage you lose in terms of isolation and low end punch. Depending on your intended use, this might be a deal breaker for a lot of people that are looking at the m50x or DT 770. But for anyone looking solely for a gaming set, I'll for sure recommend the DT 990 as the wider soundstage will be a lot more immersive and when gaming, you don't tipically require a lot of isolation since you are at home. What do you think about them, what would make them a much better choice compared with the two in the title?
@@odysseyofcuriosity WoW you not only know a lot but you are one of those who actually care about others and with that being said, I just subscribed to your channel from now on.
Never had the DT770, but I do own the DT1770 pro. I also have B&W p7, px7 s2e, Sennheiser Momentum 2, ath m-40, ath m50x. Out of all of these, it is the ath m50x I use the most. I love the sound and it is comfy. But you need to upgrade the ear cushions to some quality leather ones. Did magic.
Which one would be the better choice when primarily listening to heavy edm music? I would like to have a bassy and punchy sound but not muddy or overwhelming the mids or highs. Which one would be better? I heard that dt770's are considered bass leaning but im not sure if it would sound flat for someone with no point of reference regarding studio headphones
Honestly, I think the DT770 fit your description more compared with the m50s. It's not a night and day difference though, so to better tilt the balance, think about the other features. What matters more to you - comfort or portability? A detachable cable or better pads? As for having no reference when it comes to studio headphones, I think that they will sound "HD" to you, if that makes sense. Not necessarily bass leaning. You'll have bass, but you won't drown in it. You'll have a ton of detail, and you'll probably discover things you never heard in tracks you listened to before. Hope this helps!
I got m50x and dt 770 pro 80ohm both sound the same so much bass connect to my fx audio dac x3 same on my phone galaxy s8 50% volume is max because sound is to loud and bass rumbles im idk whats wrong ? Weak dac?Thinking about purchase scarlet solo 3gen its good choice to improve sound quality? Im just want good quality music
You will enjoy your DT770 for sure! As for the 80 ohms version, I don't own it and I haven't used it recently so I can't comment from experience. But the general consensus seems to be that the 250 ohm version (which I do own and talk about in the video) is a bit flatter, with better sound stage, so it would be better for critical listening. Try and give both a listen before buying if possible. Thanks for the comment!
Between these two, I would say the DT 770 - movies are usually 2h+ long, so comfort becomes important, and the Beyerdynamics are much more comfortable, at least for me :). But what I replied to your comment on the other video still stands (the DT 990 will have good comfort + a better soundstage, so ultimately I would go with them for movies). Hope this helps!
Platinum XYZ it really depends what I'm doing. If I'm recording, I prefer the M50x. They really block sound out of the microphone well. The design is better if you take them places and I like the removable cable. If I'm mixing, I much prefer the 770pros. They are much more comfortable for long sessions and the brighter top end makes it easier to make detailed mixing decisions, especially if you are older and you have lost some of your sensitivity to high frequencies. However, I also have the 990 pros and if your mixing, then these are by far my favourite! It's almost as good as using speakers.
@@officialWWM whoah detailed answer. Didn't expect that but very helpful. I'm very young and also try to take care of my hearing so I did find the DT 770s to be quite earpeircing at first but I quickly adjusted and I then realized they were far better than my old cheaper headphones. What I like most is no longer having to move my sub bass up several octaves while working on it just so I can hear it. The bass extension is very nice.
Platinum XYZ I think you made the right decision. People say the top end softens in them over time but I actually believe that your ears just get used to the sound of them :)
Hi Josh! Yes, I agree with you. The 80 ohms would be a tad closer to the m50x. Unfortunately, I do not own the 80 ohm version, and since the difference between them and the 250 ohm isn't really night and day, I figured I could still do this comparison, as I feel all the points I made still apply. But thanks for pointing that out👌
For this purpose, I would pick the DT770 between the two. However, depending on how/where you plan on playing your guitar, I strongly recommend at least checking the tones on some speakers (even consumer ones should be better than nothing) and comparing your patches with the guitar tones on some songs you like. I feel like it's easy to lose context and end up with some bad sounding tones while relying solely on headphones. Also hearing them on some speakers in a room makes things easier. Hope this helps!
Are the earpads on the 770s replaceable wit aftermarket or OEM pads like with the M50x's? I can deal with just about everything else on the 770s but that's a deciding factor on me getting them (the 80ohm version)
If noise isolation isn't a big deal, then I'd always go with open-back. TYGR 300rs, DT 880s and 990s in my opinion have better sound quality than both of these pairs. I'd also personally put the M40x above the M50x in terms of sound quality, the M50x has such accentuated bass it ends up sounding muddy and not clear at all.
i owned the dt 880s for over 10 years they never grew on me soundwise. the 8k peak and weak bass but they are very good for audio books or if u want to discover every detail in music but not natural and tight i like to add that u can wear them fo ours and u forget abou them as silly it may sound im in love with my mdr 7506 just sound right very tight sounding witch i like
I have the M50X. Comfort is a MAJOR issue if you have big ears, I don't even think mine are that big, and they still annoy me. I only used them because of the money I paid. I even tried replacement pads with no major improvements. Soundwise, they never managed to impress me, they are fine, I was expecting way more. I think the hype and popularity just make the expectations too high. There is no imaging or sound stage to speak of, so if you want to play competitive FPS, these are not it. They are fine for single player tittles. I'd highly recommend you to try cheaper alternatives and find the sound you like before paying a lot of money on something you are not sure if you'll like. Koss KSC75 are a great entry level alternative, they could even be your endgame. They have ZERO sub-bass (70 Hz and below), but the rest of the frequencies are on point, good imaging and sound stage and most importantly they cost like $20.
Technically it's the opposite - in an over simplification more ohms usually equate to a quieter set of headphones when connected to most devices. But if you like your music to be as quiet as possible you'll have to work with the volume knob/slider any way, so pick something that works well for you from all other points of view. Hope this helps!
Great review! I’ve just got one a couple of days ago and planning of buying an amp under $100 dollars for it. Would a FiiO K3 work well the DT 700 Pro 80?
Great choice! FiiO state the K3 should work well with headphones rated at 16 to 150 ohms. Your 80 ohms DT770 are right in there, so there's no reason why it wouldn't work well - it should drive them fine. Enjoy!
I would say comfort is very important when playing the piano. You want to focus on your practice/playing without being distracted by your ears hurting. So I would choose the DT770 as they are a lot more comfortable. However, look for a lower impedance version - either 80 ohm or even 32 ohm. Digital pianos might not have the most powerful headphone out, and you want to be able to still hear even softly played notes. Hope this helps!
Really helpful video, thanks a lot man! Im just looking for a good pair of cans for video editing, that's comfortable. Im so into the DT770Pro but only the 250ohm has coiled cable and idk with my M-Audio Mtrack duo can drive it
Most of my listening is done via the built in headphone output of a Focusrite 18i20 Gen 1 or a Behringer UMC404HD. Both of these feature a decent headphone amp (nothing stellar though). When compared to the built in Realtek soundcard in your typical motherboard, both headphones sound better on these. So I would say that yes, you do need an amp to get the most of them, especially the DT770. As some users have reported in this comment section, you could run into bass distortion issues with them when using certain sources (I'm currently planning on investigating this, since I didn't run into this problem before with my setups). The m50x tend to play nicer with weaker headphone outputs, but will also sound better with a decent amp in my experience.
I would go with the DT770 80 ohm, so you get great comfort and noise isolation and don't run into trouble with volume. The cable might be a little bit in your way, but depending on where the headphone out jack is positioned on the piano you could get an extension cable. Good luck!
@@odysseyofcuriosity does the 80ohm and 32ohm have the same spring cable? the piano i have has the headphone jack on its back and doesnt support high impedance headphones. i am thinking to buy the 32ohm version so i dont have problems with the cable nor the volume
Actually I was wrong. Both the 80 ohm and the 32 ohm have straight cables, so you should be fine. But yes, since the output of your piano doesn't support high impedance headphones, go with the DT770 32 ohms.
Yeah man dope video, nice information. Keep it up man! Only constructive criticism I have is that I would have like to know how the headphones do with bleed. When tracking and the artist has click in their hp for example
Hey Merlin! Thank you for your feedback. You are absolutely right, an actual demo/comparison of the bleed would have been great. Let me see what I can do about this
Hi Angus, maybe I’m late but in your case, connection directly in your laptop is better 32 ohms. Multipurpose 80 ohms (if you consider add an usb interface;)
Hey Brandon! For gaming, I would get the 80ohm version - they should play nicer with most built-in sound cards/headphone amps and are regarded as having a slightly more pronounced V shaped sound (so a little more bass/highs that should help in-game sounds pop). You'll definitely enjoy the sound/comfort/soundstage (even though they are closed back, they still have a decent soundstage) and isolation when gaming with them! Good luck.
Watching this in my M50X. I probably wont feel much of a difference with sound quality and i'm more on a "having nice bass" side. However, as far as the design goes - M50X is totally a winner for me here . DT 770's design IMHO resembles some kind of airplane pilot vintage headphones lol
DT770 herre and they are excellent. Prog rocker so I like the clarity, high ends and bottom boom. Replaced with cheap Sennheisers that were temporary. These will last and are comfortable.
Los dt770 tienen buenos bajos sin amplificar? Primero estaba pensando en comprarlos los dt después los m50x, solo quiero disfrutar la música en mi celular, quiero algo con buenos bajos que tengan boom jaja
Good night, incredible your video, excuse my English but I'm using the translator, I have a presonus 22vsl interface, the impedance in the headphone output is 50 ohms, but I connect it to an Alesis mixer that has Headphone Output: 75 ohm output impedance > 105mW into 75 ohms,> 40mW into 600ohms Do you think that is sufficient for the 250 ohm dt770 or should I buy an additional headphone amplifier? I have eris 3.5 presonus monitors and I want to use the dt770 for mixing bass (low end) of trap music and also for mixing with room emulations, since I don't have a treated acoustic room. For this reason, I have not yet decided between the m50x and the dt770, I want to be sure to make the right decision.
Hey Rosa! Glad you enjoyed the video! It's hard for me to say for sure, since I haven't tried any Alesis mixer so far. Chances are high you will be ok, though. You can always add the amp later if you feel/hear the need. I am curious though, is there a specific reason why you are going interface to mixer, and not driving your monitors/headphones straight from the interface?
@@odysseyofcuriosity The reason is that my interface through the headphone output does not give enough power, currently I have akgk99 but when connecting directly to the interface the volume is low, however directly to the interface I hear better sound quality, when I connect to Alesis it feels A little distortion but I gain in volume, now the question is that I want to decide on the best headphone to mix bass (low end), and the rest I will make the decisions with my small eris 3.5 monitors, in case I require an amplifier which I do you recommend? And on the other hand, with which headphone can I better mix the bass 770pro 990pro or m50x?
@@graciasalaconsciencia For mixing I would definitely go with the 770s. As for an amp, it depends on how you intend to connect it. I would choose between a FiiO E10K and a Schiit Magni 3 (depending on where you are) - both are very decently priced and should handle the DT770 250 ohm fine. The FiiO is a DAC that connects to your computer via USB - essentially bypassing your interface. It also has a line out port, so you could plug your monitors into that - but if you do any recording you'll have to switch back to your Presonus interface. The Schiit Magni 3 avoids this hassle, as it can be connected to the line outputs of your interface (it doesn't have a DAC). Your Eris monitors would then connect to it, so it would be a little more elegant. So take a look and see what's available around where you are - if you can find a Magni 3 at a good price - then go for it. If not, look for the FiiO E10K.
@@odysseyofcuriosity Thank you very much Andrew, I think the magni is the best option, in terms of headphones I have been doing a lot of research so as not to fail, yesterday I was seeing reviews of sonarworks and they put the ath 50x and the beyerdymanic dt240 pro, above the dt770 They say that with the m50x you can mix below 50hz and that with the calibration they are perfect even for mastering, now that leaves me doubts since like you many have recommended the dt770 to me, and I'm really looking for something that allows me to mix the low frequencies, to be able to separate the 808 and the kick well. Now I'm not so sure.
Are you planning to use Sonarworks as your room emulation/headphone eq? If yes, then obviously their ranking is the most important and I would go with what they recommend, just to make the most out of it.
Bought the m50x, but the sound stage is NON EXISTANT! Had to return them and wait for the 770s to get back in stock, do not regret that one bit. The m50x soundstage is so claustrophobic, and I hated every second of it. So if soundstage is important to you in the slightest, stay away from the m50x
I feel the same way about the soundstage in the m50x. It really is tiny, and in comparison the DT770 sound like semi-open/open back (even though they are closed back, they have a really decent soundstage). This goes to show that you can't have it all in one pair - so you need to decide what's important to you and choose accordingly. As Auroron says, if you care about sounstage width, the m50x won't be your best option.
I would actually go with the DT770 80 ohm for a set of e-drums, because they'll be more comfortable, they'll isolate better and the snare drum will sound better on them. Just make sure to grab the 80 ohm version, so you won't have trouble with getting enough volume from your e-drums (they might have a weak headphone out). Good luck!
I recently purchased a new headset (ATH-M50xBT) and noticed that it has a p65 (Proposition 65 Cancer and Reproductive harm) warning on the back of the box. I looked at several other Audio Technica headsets and many of them seemed to carry this warning. Is anyone familiar with this warning or why it would be listed on so many of the AT products? Should I send mine back? I got it at B&H. This warning label is located in the back of the box. Also did your box come with a plastic cover for the headphone box? Mine didn’t! Just a box
I bought 2 times dt 770 250 ohm and returned them back! The bass at a volume slightly above average began to wheeze terribly at dt 770! I bought the m50x - unfortunately they are not as comfortable as the dt770, but nothing wheezes even at a very high volume, and the sound is excellent!
Hi Evgenii! This is really interesting, as it relates to what another viewer signaled a few comments below. I would really like to try and reproduce this issue on my pair. Can you share what device you were using to drive them when this "wheezing" happened?
Hey man, what do you think of the m50x as of today? I currently have the 770 80 Ohm, and while I like them, I've been thinking of selling them and getting the m50x instead simply for the sake of transportability and detachable cable.
I have just got 770s, but they have a very small amount of bass. Maybe I'm just not into that flat response, but still I find them lacking in bass, is it normal for them? I hear low frequencies, but they are very flat.
I've owned the audio technica before and I was thinking of buying another one but now you got me thinking of getting the DT770. The only problem is how ugly the DT770 looks and how how not portable it is. I wish I could give it a listen before I made a decision.
They are a little bit bulky, but to be honest I do carry them in my backpack every day and it's not like they are impossible to carry around. Just don't expect them to be easy to use with your phone. As for looks, as I said in the video, they are subjective (I kind of like the way they look). But try and look up the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro - they are pretty much the DT700 with some extra features and a different look that you can customize - so you might like them better. As for giving them a listen, depending on where you live, try and find a HiFi store that carries them. If the Covid situation is not that bad there right now, maybe they still let people try out headphones. Good luck!
Great review! Cool that you even mention things like how it feel to wear the cans when you are also wearing glasses!👍🏻 Thanx a lot. Just a tiny little remark from a native German: "Beyer" in the brandname "Beyerdynamic" is pronounced like "fire", not like "layer". I hope it is clear what I mean 😊😇.
Thanks a lot for letting me know, Thomas! I totally get what you mean - it should be something like "Biredynamic", or like "Bayern Munchen". I'll keep that in mind for the following videos :)
In a nutshell, higher ohm -> they will need a more powerful amp to get loud & the frequency response tends to be flatter, while lower ohm will need less volume (so they can be used with a phone, for example) and tends have a bit more bass/highs (a stronger V shaped sound). If you have a decent sound card/decent phone it should be enough to drive the DT770 250 ohm for example, so if you want a flatter sound I would go for these. Good luck!
Thank you so much for this video. I was looking to buy new headphones for myself and currently I'm listening often to Symphonic metal like Nightwish and Epica. But I also listen to EDM and Hip hop from time to time I got a wide range of music taste 😁 I was also checking before headphones like JBL, Bose and Sony but it's such a hard choice now cause the shops where I could test them are closed cause of the covid19 pandemic and only do sending hope you could help me out for what headphones I should go thank you so much 👍
Hey Benjamin. Do you intend to wear them on the street or at the desk? And what device would they be connected to? A phone/music player/computer with external soundcard/computer with internal soundcard? Is bluetooth/active noise cancelling important to you? And last, but not least, what's your budget?
Hi Andrew I would probably most of the time use it at home (outside would be a nice extra) connected to my mobile and maybe also sometimes to my playstation 4 (but connected to the playstation 4 is not the most important cause I got a other playstation headset for that) I have a budget not higher than 200/300 euro I have seen a Bose Quietcomfort 35 II for 200 euros a Sony WH1000xm3 for 230 euro and also a JBL Live 650btnc for 107 euro but other tips are more than welcome with cable would also be good cause I think it got better sound quality what's kinda important thank you for your message 🙂
@@19BennJ83 Between the ones you listed, if possible, I would go with the Sony WH1000xm3, as I feel that for that price range, they have the best set of features/sound quality/ANC. They are mainly wireless (you seem to care about this since all your other choices are Bluetooth enabled) but can, of course, be used with the included wire if you need to. They are quite comfortable (as are the Bose - can't really comment on the JBL though as I didn't spend a lot of time with them), they can be worn for long 12 hour flights no problem, and the ANC is probably the best (Bose comes close, but Sony takes the edge imho). Battery life is also really good. The microphone is ok for phone calls, but not for gaming. One thing that I feel you should know about is build quality - if abused, tossed around, the head band tends to crack/break where it meats the ear cup - a defect that was here since the first edition. So if you are a bit clumsy/not careful with them, maybe you should look towards something more sturdy - like the m50x (they are studio/DJ headphones made to take a beating) that I'm talking about in this video. They are cheaper if you go wired (and there is a bluetooth adapter for them that you can get later) or you can go directly to their more recent bluetooth version - the m50xBT. Their sound quality will be great of course, but they lack the ANC (that's really useful if you travel/commute a lot).
All of us went through dozens of reviews to come to these last two headphones. We must be doing something right lmao!

Glad you found it useful, Philippe! Hope you'll enjoy your new headphones! Good luck! 🤞
However, I picked up a pair of dt 770's and have been enjoying them so far
uncomfortable pads are also available in Audiotechnika ATH m40x
If it's any consolation gluing only extended the life by about a month or so for me anyway.
The only reason I'm going to get the m50s over the dt770 is the detachable cable im very accident prone
So did you end up buying it?
How was your experience??
Thank you for the great review and honest opinion! It was pleasant to watch from start to finish.
Glad you enjoyed it!
As a DJ happy to own ATH-m50’s, never looking back.
Thanks for your review! I went with the Beyerdynamic Dt 770's 😍
Look forward to using them with music and gaming! 😌
Como te fue con los dt? Yo igual los quiero para escuchar música y jugar, son buenos para eso?
Once that runs out I'll probably just modify them to be mini-XLR and removable cable too
Sound like a solid plan! May they give you many hours of acoustic joy😁
Thanks this is so useful, I wear glasses and it makes headphones annoying I appreciate you making this a point!
I know, right? Bigger cups do have their disadvantages, but when you wear glasses they are a must! Thanks for checking out the video
I was about to say that LOL. I also use glasses and this part is so important to me, so I'll go for Beyerdynamic.
As a pure listener I prefer the AT’s. (I listen to an eclectic mix of Tool, Billy Eilish and Piazzolla.)
I wear wireframe glasses and have no problems with the comfort.
Hail to the tool

glad i found your review early.
I'm sure you'll love your new Beyerdynamics, Rahul! Glad I could help and have fun with them :)
Como fue tu experiencia con los dt?
What do you say, which is better than the m40x or 770?
I went with the dt770. The audio-technica are a great sounding headphone but the quality of the build seems to be lacking. I had 3 pairs over 5 years and they all broke where the speaker cup joins the headband. Not even abusive use or floor drops. I had a pair just break while I was wearing them.
How do they compare?
I have used the AT's for years now(at least 5) and after changing the ear cushions out they still rock.
That's nice to hear. Did you go with original ear pads or did you go for after market ones?
Buy both. I purchased both units, and both have a place in my studio in many applications (Both Are excellent a must-have!). This is the same as saying which one is best, PC or Mac, Um Both are necessary!
when i mix with the m50x, the bassline in my car sounds so good .... but for comfort the dt770 is very better for me :)

I'm curious of these vs the dt 1990. Like just how much better are the 1990s? Night and day?
This a really helpful video and well presented review

Hey Andrew, nice video :) Thx for all the useful info. But, what's that soundtrack you are having in the video? Thx in advance.

The newer Limited Edition of the DT 770 has less pressure, said my friend. Thanks for this very helpful review
Good to know! Glad you found it helpful!

Would I need a headphone amp or audio interface if I got the beyerdynamic dt 770 pro 80 ohm? Or could I just plug it into my laptop?

I liked your video but didn't you recommend the DT 990 vs DT 770? You know that is a better choice, right?

That's it! this review confirmed me to go for DT770🤘
would you recomend 80ohms for mixing purpose?
You will enjoy your DT770 for sure! As for the 80 ohms version, I don't own it and I haven't used it recently so I can't comment from experience. But the general consensus seems to be that the 250 ohm version (which I do own and talk about in the video) is a bit flatter, with better sound stage, so it would be better for critical listening. Try and give both a listen before buying if possible. Thanks for the comment!
@@odysseyofcuriosity thank you for the valuable feedback. Will sure check before buying it🤘

Really well made video!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Great review. I was wondering which one of these headphones would you recommend for watching movies?
Between these two, I would say the DT 770 - movies are usually 2h+ long, so comfort becomes important, and the Beyerdynamics are much more comfortable, at least for me :). But what I replied to your comment on the other video still stands (the DT 990 will have good comfort + a better soundstage, so ultimately I would go with them for movies). Hope this helps!
@@odysseyofcuriosity Thanks, Andrew I really appreciate your response you've been a big help, the 990s it is.
I couldn't decide, so I bought both :)
Tell us what you think please! And which you prefer.
Do you bought 80 ohms or 250 ohms?
Doesn't really make sense comparing the 250 ohm vs the m50x, the m50x and the 80 ohm dt 770 are more comparable.
Hi Josh! Yes, I agree with you. The 80 ohms would be a tad closer to the m50x. Unfortunately, I do not own the 80 ohm version, and since the difference between them and the 250 ohm isn't really night and day, I figured I could still do this comparison, as I feel all the points I made still apply. But thanks for pointing that out👌
Which would be more natural sounding for dialing in guitar sounds through a modeller?
For this purpose, I would pick the DT770 between the two. However, depending on how/where you plan on playing your guitar, I strongly recommend at least checking the tones on some speakers (even consumer ones should be better than nothing) and comparing your patches with the guitar tones on some songs you like. I feel like it's easy to lose context and end up with some bad sounding tones while relying solely on headphones. Also hearing them on some speakers in a room makes things easier. Hope this helps!
7:25 velour pads have more airflow…and how in the world DT 770 pro’s have better isolation!?…🥲
Are the earpads on the 770s replaceable wit aftermarket or OEM pads like with the M50x's?
I can deal with just about everything else on the 770s but that's a deciding factor on me getting them (the 80ohm version)
Yes. Beyerdynamic sells the originals, and there are plenty of aftermarket options, too 👍
I have the same dark green special edition of the M50s and love them, pads are fucked now though, wish you could get replacements in the same color
Yo i hesited bc all say dt770 are the best choice but the cable fix is very anoying somone can tell if this are a mutch point to buy ath ?
If noise isolation isn't a big deal, then I'd always go with open-back. TYGR 300rs, DT 880s and 990s in my opinion have better sound quality than both of these pairs. I'd also personally put the M40x above the M50x in terms of sound quality, the M50x has such accentuated bass it ends up sounding muddy and not clear at all.
i owned the dt 880s for over 10 years
they never grew on me soundwise. the 8k peak and weak bass
but they are very good for audio books or if u want to discover every detail in music but not natural and tight
i like to add that u can wear them fo ours and u forget abou them
as silly it may sound im in love with my mdr 7506 just sound right very tight sounding witch i like
I have the M50X.
The 2 superstars
On the 770 it's easy to shape the sound with different pads and position on the head to be less V shaped.
I want the best of both worlds! I got the velour ear pads for ATH M50x’s for comfort…would it affect the sound??
It will affect the sound - but it really depends on the specific pads. Hope you'll enjoy them!
If I prefer my music as quiet as possible should I get as little ohm as possible?
Technically it's the opposite - in an over simplification more ohms usually equate to a quieter set of headphones when connected to most devices. But if you like your music to be as quiet as possible you'll have to work with the volume knob/slider any way, so pick something that works well for you from all other points of view. Hope this helps!
this review was very helpful thank you // im so tired of the no removable cable that the BD's have yo

Enjoy!
@@odysseyofcuriosity Thanks a lot, Andrew!
Which one will be good for watching movies?
m50s, because of their low impedance (there's a chance quiet moments won't be loud enough on the Beyerdynamics if you are not driving them properly).
Weirdly enaugh, m50x is around 50-60$ more expensive in my country
Which is better for a digital piano? Thanks
@@odysseyofcuriosity thanks Andrew from Italy
Really helpful video, thanks a lot man! Im just looking for a good pair of cans for video editing, that's comfortable. Im so into the DT770Pro but only the 250ohm has coiled cable and idk with my M-Audio Mtrack duo can drive it
Do you use an amp or is it stock good enough?
@@odysseyofcuriosity ok thank you!
which ones do you think are better for playing the digital piano?
@@odysseyofcuriosity thank you for the feedback, really appreciate it
Yeah man dope video, nice information.
Let me see what I can do about this
As for the AT that I use in my little home studio mostly for overdubbing with a Rode NT1 condenser mic, haven’t had any problems so far.
I'm looking at the 80 ohm version to use with my laptop, will this be fine or will I need an amp too? Ty for the great video :)
It really depends. Some say you do, some say you don't. I'd just wing it if I were you. See if you're satisfied or not.
Hi Angus, maybe I’m late but in your case, connection directly in your laptop is better 32 ohms. Multipurpose 80 ohms (if you consider add an usb interface;)
You don't need and amp but if you want the most out of them then getting an amp will greatly improve the sound
M50x or dt700?
What OHM on the DT 770 would you recommend for PC gaming
Hey Brandon! For gaming, I would get the 80ohm version - they should play nicer with most built-in sound cards/headphone amps and are regarded as having a slightly more pronounced V shaped sound (so a little more bass/highs that should help in-game sounds pop). You'll definitely enjoy the sound/comfort/soundstage (even though they are closed back, they still have a decent soundstage) and isolation when gaming with them! Good luck.
@@odysseyofcuriosity oof i ordered the 250 should i switch it. I have a DAC to use with it.
If you already have a decent DAC, there is no reason to switch. You will love them as I love mine👌Enjoy
For me, modern DT770 (80 Ohm) is better than Senh HD650, let alone M50X))
Good night, incredible your video, excuse my English but I'm using the translator, I have a presonus 22vsl interface, the impedance in the headphone output is 50 ohms, but I connect it to an Alesis mixer that has Headphone Output:
75 ohm output impedance > 105mW into 75 ohms,> 40mW into 600ohms
Do you think that is sufficient for the 250 ohm dt770 or should I buy an additional headphone amplifier?
As Auroron says, if you care about sounstage width, the m50x won't be your best option.
soo true bro !! I tried a mix with m50x and in my car the stereo was very too big and not ok ..... i dont have this problem with my dt770 or my hd600.
@@odysseyofcuriositywhat about for bass?
hii, i wonder which is the better for an e drum? it is the m50x?
I would actually go with the DT770 80 ohm for a set of e-drums, because they'll be more comfortable, they'll isolate better and the snare drum will sound better on them. Just make sure to grab the 80 ohm version, so you won't have trouble with getting enough volume from your e-drums (they might have a weak headphone out). Good luck!

Hey man, what do you think of the m50x as of today?
I currently have the 770 80 Ohm, and while I like them, I've been thinking of selling them and getting the m50x instead simply for the sake of transportability and detachable cable.
@@Sundervil I think the m50x a good one!
I have just got 770s, but they have a very small amount of bass. Maybe I'm just not into that flat response, but still I find them lacking in bass, is it normal for them? I hear low frequencies, but they are very flat.
DT770 250 ohms has a bass rattle issue. Bad quality control.
Mine don't seem to have that, unless I just don't know what to took out for. What's your issue like? What are you powering your headphones off of?
sometimes there's just a hair sticking in the ear pad what's causing the problem...
@@odysseyofcuriosity 😁 Yeah, like in Bayern München! Exactly! You are a humorous guy it seems. I like that 👍🏻!
buy both, they are so different(and cheap
What's the difference between the OHM?
In a nutshell, higher ohm -> they will need a more powerful amp to get loud & the frequency response tends to be flatter, while lower ohm will need less volume (so they can be used with a phone, for example) and tends have a bit more bass/highs (a stronger V shaped sound). If you have a decent sound card/decent phone it should be enough to drive the DT770 250 ohm for example, so if you want a flatter sound I would go for these. Good luck!
Ngl, I just wish the dt770s came standard with a removable cable
Thank you so much for this video. I was looking to buy new headphones for myself and currently I'm listening often to Symphonic metal like Nightwish and Epica.
