Station Shaping: Platform Screen Doors 101

  • We're introducing platform screen doors to Melbourne’s rail network for the first time.
    Each of the five new underground stations will have 60 platform screen doors made of toughened glass.
    The platform screen doors are aligned with the doors of the train and they open and close automatically when trains arrive at and depart stations.

    What will happen if trains other than the hcmt will go into the metro tunnel. Will the platform screen doors fit those trains.

      Other existing train types won't be allowed in the Metro Tunnel since the doors won't line up.
      By the time the Metro Tunnel opens there should be enough HCMT trains available to adequately service the line. That may be the case already.

      I believe that if a train tries to enter the metro tunnel that shouldn't, it will apply the emergency brakes.

    I dont see why we need these? What is difficult about getting on a train?

      They're not about helping people get on, they're for safety; so no one can fall onto the tracks, or into the train whilst it's in motion...
      They also help with climate control within the station as a side benefit.

    Here’s the problem with platform doors:
    Without the doors, if there’s a shortage of HCMTs, you can run a Comeng or Siemens to fill in
    With the doors, if there’s a shortage of HCMTs, you’ll have to cancel services.

      it still improves the safety regardless
      yes definitely it limits the variety of trains that could be placed in there, but it also potentially allows the possibility for automated metro to be done in the stations (totally not going to happen given it'll need to travel into the suburbs but it's a far reach)
      even so, i still think platform doors are definitely worthwhile and important

      They would come up with a better solution than that: e.g. run HCMT's through the tunnel section and run Comeng/Siemens/Xtraps on the open sections of track. Not ideal, but far from the end of the world. The "But sometimes" argument just doesn't fly. This is brand new infrastructure, we should be pushing the envelope on what's possible. No point building a metro tunnel that's bleeding edge... for the 1980's. This will be cutting edge for the 2000's at least. Australia is a long way behind on things like platform screen doors and driverless metros anyway.

    Did I hear correctly, 300 mm tolerance for the doors to line up? That seems like a lot.

      You can see that the door on the platform is way wider than the door on the train, allowing for this tolerance

    He mentions “safety” as the main reason for screen doors yet fails to mention what happens if you get caught between the screen and the train 😓😓

      With other metro systems with similar door systems, there’s sensors that can detect if there’s any objects lodged in the doors
      Also, countless other systems including Sydney, Singapore, London, etc have platform doors, and they rarely ever have problems. Do you ever hear stories of people getting stuck in elevator doors? Regardless, I don’t know how one can get stuck in the door since there would be audible and visual warnings that the doors are closing.
