You miss the point of what was on the line. It was a constitutional crises that could have led to the dissolution of parliament and the removal of the Queen. By having someone take the fall it diverts the crises. It was an suicide mission they needed someone loyal to do.
The row between Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher, as depicted in Netflix's *The Crown*, was based on real tensions that existed between the two women during Thatcher's time as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990. The main focus of their clash, as portrayed in *The Crown*, revolved around political differences, particularly concerning the apartheid regime in South Africa and broader Commonwealth relations. Here's a detailed explanation of what this disagreement was about and why it almost caused a constitutional crisis: The Conflict: The primary disagreement stemmed from Thatcher’s policies on sanctions against South Africa during the apartheid era. The Commonwealth, a political association of former British colonies, was pushing for economic sanctions on South Africa to pressure the apartheid regime into dismantling its system of racial segregation. Many Commonwealth nations, particularly those with large non-white populations, were strongly in favor of such sanctions as a moral stand against apartheid. However, Margaret Thatcher opposed the sanctions, citing economic and strategic reasons. She believed that sanctions would hurt the British economy, which had investments in South Africa, and also feared they might destabilize South Africa in a way that could worsen the situation for all its citizens, particularly the black population. Thatcher's refusal to impose full sanctions put her at odds with the majority of Commonwealth leaders and, crucially, with Queen Elizabeth II, who was known to have a more sympathetic view towards the anti-apartheid movement and supported the Commonwealth's stance. The Role of the Queen: Queen Elizabeth II, as the head of the Commonwealth, held a symbolic leadership role in the organization. Although she is constitutionally neutral in British domestic politics, her duties as the head of the Commonwealth give her a voice in international relations, particularly when it comes to maintaining unity among Commonwealth nations. Many of these nations were frustrated by Thatcher’s resistance to sanctions, and it was believed that the Queen shared their concerns. In *The Crown*, the tension between the two figures is dramatized by portraying the Queen as privately disapproving of Thatcher’s position. While the Queen maintained her constitutional impartiality publicly, reports at the time suggested that she was frustrated by Thatcher’s unwillingness to heed the calls for sanctions, which were seen as a moral necessity by many Commonwealth countries. The Buckingham Palace Leak: The situation escalated when, in July 1986, *The Sunday Times* published an article claiming that Queen Elizabeth II was dismayed by Thatcher’s handling of the sanctions issue and that the monarch believed Thatcher’s policies were damaging the Commonwealth. This report, which suggested that the Queen was critical of Thatcher’s government, was highly unusual, as the Queen had always remained politically neutral in public. This leak was significant because it represented a rare breach in the British tradition of constitutional monarchy, where the sovereign must remain above politics and never express public opinion on political matters. The British constitution is largely unwritten and depends on conventions. One of the most important conventions is the political neutrality of the monarch. The leak thus raised concerns about a constitutional crisis because it suggested that the Queen was, at least privately, interfering in political matters. Why It Almost Caused a Constitutional Crisis: In the UK, the monarch is expected to remain apolitical and above the fray of party politics. The revelation that the Queen might have been at odds with her Prime Minister raised the specter of a constitutional crisis because it suggested a breach in the long-standing convention of royal neutrality. If the Queen were seen as directly opposing a sitting Prime Minister, it could have undermined both the authority of the monarchy and the elected government. Such a public disagreement between the head of state and the head of government could have destabilized the British political system, which relies on the cooperation and mutual respect of these two offices. The monarch’s role is to advise, warn, and encourage the Prime Minister in private, but any suggestion of public disapproval can erode trust in the system. The leak caused significant embarrassment for Buckingham Palace, and both the Queen and Thatcher downplayed the incident. Buckingham Palace issued a rare public statement denying the claims, asserting that the Queen always maintained neutrality and had a close working relationship with Thatcher. Thatcher, for her part, also brushed aside any suggestion of a rift, calling the reports "nonsense." Conclusion: The row between Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher, as dramatized in *The Crown*, was rooted in their differing approaches to the apartheid regime in South Africa and the Commonwealth's stance on sanctions. While the Queen is constitutionally bound to remain neutral, the suggestion that she privately disagreed with Thatcher created a moment of potential constitutional tension. Although the situation never escalated into a full-blown crisis, the leak of the Queen’s supposed discontent was a rare and significant moment that highlighted the delicate balance of the British constitutional monarchy and its political system.

It’s just happened that Andrew and Harry have both been shittier than their siblings, likely due to having the privileges sans responsibilities 🤷♀️
That actor playing Charles sounds remarkably like him. He captured him very well physically as well.
"Fringe!" Oh my.
so, thatcher is accurately being call a witch because even her majesty gets opinionated
Andrew should've said, "I only have one medal on my chest, but unlike you I won my medals and earned my rank."
Cos he's a real hero isn't he......................just like Harry. ( Both were utterly cocooned from any real danger )
@@maxthelab8457 No.
@@maxthelab8457 If he was on board of the Invincible or any other ship of the expeditionary Fleet, he was in danger like any other member of the crews were...
Charles served on warships though
@@maxthelab8457you do know Harry was an active helicopter pilot during the Afghanistan War? He had to be released after someone revealed his identity and location for obvious security reasons. Definitely not cocooned.
If that's true. What they pulled on that poor man totally sucks. I would have come out with a book about it.
Proof positive of the intense selfishness and narcissism of these two princes. Their later years proved this in spades, also. It was a funny scene tho.
Charles has reigned in his. Andrew has not and will probably not.
Hi, did you know that The Crown is fiction? Those are actors saying lines, not the Royal Family. The writers of The Crown did not have hidden cameras or hidden microphones in Buckingham Palace and Windsor. 😂😂😂😂
@@flowermeerkat6827 Probably the OP is a dopey American who thinks this is a documentary.
The only one of them worth a damn was Anne, who was and is truly formidable. I wish she were the firstborn; what a badass queen she would have been.
@@christinebutler7630 Edward is not so bad either. I agree Anne would have been an awesome monarch like her mother, but sadly even if she was oldest of all of them she would not have been Queen. Male primogeniture was still active back then and the only way she could have been queen was if she had no brothers like her mum.
0:28 It's hard to feel sorry for Andy and Sarah, and Chuck. And Phil.
Princess Anne ❤❤❤
This was the middle season of The Crown and it was fabulous
A lesson for all spares, who fancied the throne at anytime...
But Mummy has final say!😑
Falling on his sword, for Queen and Country.
Anne would have made an amazing queen!
Wow, people actually commenting on this as though it wasn’t a work of complete fiction 😂
Talk about taking Loyalty for the crown, that's a real low .
Andrew will pay dearly his narcissim as well as the late Queen as H.M. K. C III is still dealing with that trouble-fête.
I am not sure if there is any realism in this show but if it shows some semblance of reality they are a strange family indeed
As always.. the rich people get to go scot free.. while the lower class get stepped on.. even when its not thier fault..
You can always change tactics Andy!! and go to Pizza Hut. 😛
Edward freely used one of my favourite terms ......................starts with a c and ends with a y.
Bravo. Well Edward handled that bit of truth well.
Andrew seems stressed by events. No doubt the fact he has to marry an adult has him sweating too
😆😅😂🤣
How many times do you have to be told? Andrew doesn’t sweat! He told us that on live television!
stop talking rot
Reason No. 1,267 to never trust the British elite.
No way would I have taken the blame for the Queen’s screw-up!
Typical! The rich always find someone who would take the fall for them. Culprit indeed! Its just atrocious! 😏🙄
It isn't just the rich. Half a**ed, incompetent bosses in all kinds of industries and workplaces, do it all the time.
Fergie and Randy Andy were a great pair afterall was said and done 😅😅😅...and they said she was bad...
I could see the 2 Charles and Andrew acting like that
Sad, how they turned on him.
The Crown must win. Must *always* win.
Move him into a royal trailer park.
Who? Andrew? That’s what King Charles is trying to do now but Andrew won’t go along with it!
Best series on Netflix
the prince had learned this with his grandmother and mother
My question is: If no one else was in the room, how do they know what happened?
Hmm, Butlers etc. plenty of people quietly in the background- and many books now written by them, or interviews given.
‘Fringe’
Harry’s second book
Why is it always so dark and foggy in the rooms? Very annoying...
And the Press Agent realised that day that the biggest problem with licking the boot is that your mouth is only inches away from your throat
What exactly was the row about? Also, how could the Queen let someone be sacrificed like that? It's disgusting! I am not sure that The Crown always tells the truth or embroiders it, so did this really happen?
It was not a documentary, its written by scriptwriters who were not there, and acted by actors who were not there.
😂
a sunday times article in 1986 alleged that the two had a rift based on thatcher’s spending cuts causing suffering for the public and her policy in south africa. the show alleges that her press secretary leaked the queen’s views to the press and was made to take the fall for it as a result. in reality, the reporters took his words out of context and he did not purposely insinuate the queen held negative views of thatcher because she never discussed her political views with anyone and they were never allowed to be recorded. he was not forced to resign and did not immediately move to writing books. he left a whole year later, probably disillusioned by the position after this incident but he wasn’t forced out. he denied ever leaking her opinions and i think he really didn’t mean to, it was twisted by the media. lines up with how the british media still operates today.
Edward's "Ouch!' was sassy.
A lot of English people detested Thatcher, for good reason. Ask an English person.
edward and his hired Royal marines uniform, so many unearned medals and decorations.
Tell me about it! 😅😂
You're forgetting that he was in action and did actually serve well, in the Falklands. Despite whatever else he may have done. Oops, thought the reference was to Andrew, mia culpa. 😖
@@Beruthiel45That was Andrew, NOT Edward.
Edward never finished basic training.
@@Roheryn100 oh, sorry, I didn't notice that it was Edward, my mistake. 🥴
@@patricktracey7424 eh, it’s honorary orders. Honorary service isn’t reserved for royals. Anyone can get them. Likewise a lot of their medals are commemorative and anyone can and often gets them too-like staff who helped prepare the coronation getting coronation medals and such
Hes such a mean man to his brother. Just plain mean.
They really do get butthurt over lack of headlines like this?
Charles and camilla yeah the rest no. Harry in his book was actually very frustrated that William told him to just ignore what the press say. There’s a whole bit (and more) of him complaining to William about xyz story and William telling him to just not read it, plus William berating Charles for caring what the media says or trying to influence it. This is partly what makes Harry’s book fascinating, it unintentionally reveals William has an insane amount of inner peace lmao
I know this a dramatised but you could easily imagine him behaving like that
No problem Andrew, don't sweat on it.
he’s actually mad it’s not an underage girl
Eu queria a cena em que a rainha corre atrás da carruagem na série eu acho momento tão fofo
Charles was right to take Andrew down a peg, even if we didn't know what we know about him.
Come on Andrew you said you don't sweat
Anne, born before Andrew but was lower in succession ranking due to protocol, looks on as he has a tiff about not feeling important enough
Why would you say something before you're brother wedding
Prince Edward go's ouch
"That was impressively cunty"... Edward was always the most underrated, more realistic of the Queen's Princes... Knew and accepted his place and made the most of it...
I would argue he turned out the best of her sons.
Andrew, upset about his place in history… oh one day you may get your headlines!
You do all realise this is fake, surely?
I'm not sure they do
One of the things I never liked about royalty is the impressive amount of phony military titles
The truth hurts
Is there a fire in the building?
Get some ventilators in there.
He just wants to be with children 😂
Kinda thought it was funny how Charles roasted Andrew. Sibling rivalry, reality or both?
