Edit: to give some clarification as there are two Age of Kings mods (1.0 and 2.0A) - these are both based on the release version of AoE 2 as well as the patch that coincided with the release of Conquerors.
1.0 has stuff such as the Teuton Deathstar, stone cost removed from TCs and TCs being affected by Fletching, Bodkin and Bracer. 2.0A reflects the fixes Ensemble did to the game.
Hjörleif and I are also working on a Conquerors mod as well as a campaign compatible version of the AoK mod :)

I think you forgot to change loom: it used to give villagers +1 pierce armour, not +2.

Just fyi, back then in AoK, considering the circumstances, optimal strategy was going Feudal at 24 pop with 2 ranges and produce skirmishers non-stop. No scouts, because scouts in feudal were as weak as a Dark Age scout, so nobody would ever produce scouts in Feudal Age on AoK (only AoC Feudal scouts had 3+2 attack). 22 pop was used for forward rushes (trush, flush and so on with 4 villagers building right in front of enemy land).
Nowadays most things are automated in the game, less lag, etc. so economy is more streamlined. Nowadays, under that old AoK balance, 23 pop Feudal or even 22 pop should be better, keeping 2 Archery Ranges producing skirms at a full time production.
It's fun to see how The Viper used a very different approach with Saracens than players back in 2002 for example, mainly based on his 2024 knowledge, and then he realized most things he wanted or needed were expensive or impossible lol
AoC introduced +2 attack on feudal scouts, which created a wide variety of strategic and tactical possibilities, without directly nerfing skirmishers. This was the most important, yet small, change ever made and contributed to more dynamic games as we see today. 2 ranges skirms was meta before in AoK, and by a big margin...

you should play with the QOL features back then too (with all this auto farm controversy) meaning once your vils built a lumber camp they stood idle when it was finished - you had to manually then task them to get wood (can't remember if this was AOE1 only or if this was added in AOC). And you have to manually rebuild every single farm when it expired - no autoseed or queue
Yea, it was super annoying having to build a lumber camp and then remember to go back once it was finished.
It was one of the best changes from kings to conquerors when I was young.
@@MrJacqques sending 6 vills to build a mining camp next to some gold then 5 mins later you are low on gold go back and check and they built it and just stood there. Remember them days well....
They didn't improve QoL in Starcraft Remastered (I can see why as it would be massively controversial) but I wish they had included a "noobs mode" or something, as in that game you can't even queue up the robot vils to automine. You have to build the worker, come back when it is done, then manually assign it to mine. It's so damn annoying.

Agree with Brood War, thought the same- just got Remastered & Tooned version, so epic, but that control... AND THEN: as of this year basically the hottest new Starcraft anything is the Evolution Complete Mod where you can play Starcraft Brood War within Starcraft 2, true to the original balance. (And you can play vs SC2 races). It's sweet.
Still no SC3 with AI robots as the 4th race, and significant QoL features that frankly baffle me aren't in more RTS games, which at current have players labelled as a "General" but feeling like a cook as far as necessitity of micromanagement & unit orders.
Like the ability to tell a unit what it's priority should be, to give more complex commands (like avoid enemies on scout)- basic stuff still decades away, it feels like.
I wonder if it's still worth it to pitch the concept to Blizzard, going the same way as other greedy perspective-lacking, less-true-to-heart gaming studios and game makers like Games Workshop. Independent RTS games like Beyond All Reason and Table-Top Strat games like OnePageRules are becoming fan favorites & for good reason.

Pretty sure that was aoe1 only. I was mind blown when they started working right away in aok.
It's not AoK unless you have to task your villagers after building a camp.

to be fair that would have been very suboptimal, OG Mamelukes:
had less hp
lacked Zealotry(Saracen camel) hp
infantry armor class
Slower
less attack
lacked bloodlines
lacked the mameluke armor class to reduce cav bonus damage
They did have 0 frame delay though
Only 13 civs! Simpler times. But I'm grateful for the additions and updates the game has received over the decades because where would I be without my Malians
I remember refusing to play AoC for the longest time because I didn't want to get overwhelmed by too many factions (and also not liking the setting too much). But yea nowadays the game would be kinda boring without all the newer civs and techs.
@@Th3hUnT3R1 I prefer 13 civs it easy easier to learn, I only have limited time and now is a mess, I quit online play as it is imposible to learn so many civs for normal peoole

@@diego2817 I don't think that's neccessarily true. I can see why you say that but if they invested as much time in making civs unique as they did in creating new ones, the game would also be overwhelming I feel (And it would completely change how the game feels imo). For example I stopped playing Starcraft 2 after they added swarm hosts and a bunch of other stuff cause I was already barely keeping up with the existing units. Also it gave them a lot more freedom for singleplayer campaign, diving into historical battles that a lot of people are not aware of. I learned a lot about history and other civilizations from aoe 2, especially as a kid.
Back then I was only on Britons. Today, I still am 😂

Search age of kings and filter by data mod. 1.0 is original and 2.0 is with nerfed teuton tc (+5 LOS instead of +5 range)

If it was Age of kings balance Teutonic town centers would have +5 attack range. They were called death stars for a reason.

Teuton TC +5 LoS sounds fake, wasn't it +5 range until AoC nerfed it to +5 LoS?
i thought it was +5 range in like 1.0 AoK but by 2.0a it was +5 LoS, but the tech tree description still said +5 range
Teutons used to have +5 range, also Fletching affected TCs. So they could get 6+7 range. TCs cost no stone as well, just 275 wood 😄
It was nerfed to +5 LOS in AoK 2.0. both 1.0 and 2.0 are available as data mods.
@@julle4017 Yeah it was such a simple strat- chop wood (easy for them with cheap farms) and spam TC 'towers' as you roll along. AI just bled themselves against them, and in nomad people would drop them just out of the range of enemy TC's in online multiplayer, leading to the nerf.

I used to play AoK every now and then up until a few years ago. But the balance version I have, had loom with only 1 pierce armour, which made skirms twice as effective against vills. Also so many university techs used to cost stone

thats the version I played the most, ppl only went for skirms in feudal because scouts are trash and loom only gave +1 pierce armor, so skirms dealt 2 damages to villagers. And you played the 2.0a patched version, we're not even talking about the 2.0 version with the extra range on teuton TC making douche the best strat LOL. Nice content for old ppl like me tho

How young is margougou? I'm the same age as AoK but I still remember calling AoE2 AoC everywhere.
21. He only started playing online in 2020 when AoE 2 DE already was released and even a couple of years before DE, people were not talking about AoC that much anymore, because the HD edition existed and introduced new expansions, which were also added on Voobly. So pure AoC was only until 2012.

Hello there, Viper is not answering, i wanna play this game again online after 10 years. My question is should i download only age of empires definitve 2 from steam? Microsoft is cheaper, if i download from them, i still could play with voobly players? why no help for new players :( i dont wanna buy wrong games. All very expensive.
But aoe2 DE, no need for additional DLCs.
aoe 2 de is best on steam, you dont need all the dlcs but than you cant play with the new civs but you can still play online and most of the players are there.
